The newly-described Halieutichthys intermedius batfish. Image credit: Ho, Chakrabarty & Sparks Though the Gulf of Mexico is one of the most intensely studied marine environments on the planet, there is still room for discovery. Marketing Junk Food to Kids Could Soon be Illegal

Photo via SMH It’s a topic that sparks heated debate, and one that we’ve tackled here before: Should corporations be allowed to market unhealthy food to children? When a county in California banned McDonald’s Happy Meals , it caused a veritable uproar. Happy Meals, are one of the most cannily marketed kids’ products — yet many feel that it’s the parents’ role to decide what to let their kids eat, regardless. So I’m curious to see how the nation will take the news that market… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Thousands of Undiscovered Plants Face Extinction

Image credit: Hans Dekker /Flickr Scientists have estimated that between 5 million and 50 million flowering plant species may be threatened with extinction. The shocking thing about this number is that fewer than 2 million have been discovered. That means millions—and possibly tens-of-millions—of species may vanish from the planet before they are known to science. And these numbers, a new study shows, may be conservative…. Cell Phones to Get Clean Energy Boost, Increasing by 41%

Photo via Abi Skipp A new report from Pike Research forcasts good news for renewable energy and mobile base stations (the wireless communications station used to connect cell phone networks). Clean energy will power 4.5% of base stations by 2014, and while that doesn’t sound like much, it’s a boost up from the mere 0.11% in 2010, or a 40.9% increase. But even more exciting is the percentage of base stations powered by renewable energy in developing countries will jot up to 8% by 2014. With

Algae-Fighting Armada Trawls the Coast of China

Image credit: ChinaFotoPress/Getty Images Just two weeks ago, a massive, smelly, algae bloom broke out of the coast of China . In just a few days, the bloom blossomed into a cloud covering more than 120 square miles. Now, the same bloom has grown to cover more than 150 square miles. China has dispatched an armada of 66 vessels, ten forklifts, and 168 people to collect the algae before it has a chance to decompose into a potentially toxic slime on the beach…. Russia Creates Nature Reserves the Size of Switzerland!

Image: WWF 3% of Russian to be National Parks by 2020 Some good news out of Russia, a country that hasn’t always been very good at protecting its ecosystems. The Russian government is establishing 9 new nature reserves and 13 national parks covering a total area of over 3.8 million hectare by 2020. Desalination Spending to Double, with United States Among Top 5 Markets

Photo via Jaymi Heimbuch Desalination is the process of purifying salt or brackish water into fresh water. While it has primarily been an energy intensive process that is used as a last resort for generating water in areas like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, the technology has continually advanced and we’re seeing more energy efficient — and therefore cheaper — possibilities for using desalination as a significant source for water. New research shows that over the next six years, spending on desalination will double, and the United States will be a… Read the full story on TreeHugger

7 Animals Way Smarter Than Us

Photo: Taylar . Bodies that work with the Earth’s magnetic field to determine location. Female-only societies. Telling whether you’re a friend or a jerk there to make trouble with just one whiff. Homes so efficient they keep one steady temperature all the time. No, we’re not talking about new X-Men or other comic book characters, we’re talking about animals with skills we can only dream of. These seven animals are way smarter than us — just another reason to pay some respect when we encounter them in the wild…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

In Defence of Squatting: If It’s Unused, Is It Yours?

Image credit: The Guardian Oh dear. I suspect I am going to reawaken the age-old “is environmentalism socialist ” debate with this post. Because there’s nothing like discussing property rights to get people to back into their respective political corners. But try as I might, I can’t avoid the fact that everywhere there is perfectly good produce, clothing, and energy going to waste. And everywhere there are

Healthier Office Spaces Benefit Everyone

All Images by B. Alter: The Living Office Research has shown that a healthy office space with plants and open windows is more conducive to productivity.
