Digital Discrimination: Harvard Study Shows Black Hosts Get Less Gwap Off Airbnb Than Non-Blacks!!!

This is discouraging. A new Harvard study shows there is some discrimination going on in the digital space , specifically on Airbnb, where black hosts have to charge less than non-blacks for comparable rentals. Via Valleywag reports : If you rent a room on Airbnb, odds are you know what your host looks like—their picture is featured front and center. A new report out of Harvard Business School crunched the data, and says this is totally fine, as long as you’re not black. The study, titled “Digital Discrimination: The Case of Airbnb.com ,” puts forth a pretty bleak premise. If you take two rental spaces, of the same general quality and in the same general area, the one owned by a non-black host will cost 12 percent more, on average: We find that non-black hosts are able to charge approximately 12% more than black hosts, holding location, rental characteristics, and quality constant. Moreover, black hosts receive a larger price penalty for having a poor location score relative to non-black hosts. These differences highlight the risk of discrimination in online marketplaces, suggesting an important unintended consequence of a seemingly-routine mechanism for building trust. It’s hard to pin down exactly, but the educated presumption is that black Airbnb hosts have to lower their prices in order to compete with non-black Airbnb users, simply because Airbnb users would prefer to not rent from a black host. The study doubts Airbnb is subject to any illegal discrimination liability, because otherwise it wouldn’t show all those black and white faces so prominently. In a statement to Recode , Airbnb, of course, dismisses the study: “ We are committed to making Airbnb the most open, trusted, diverse, transparent community in the world and our Terms of Service prohibit content that discriminates. The data in this report is nearly two years old and is from only one of the more than 35,000 cities where Airbnb hosts welcome guests into their homes. Additionally, the authors made a number of subjective or inaccurate determinations when compiling their findings.” Of course, this wouldn’t be a case of Airbnb employing discriminatory policies, or encouraging discrimination—at worst, they’re just facilitating it as a middleman. But it’s a reminder that the “sharing economy” isn’t a fist-bump feel-good utopia, as advertised—we share all our dirty prejudices, too. Guess there really is racism everywhere. Do you think the Harvard folks should widen their scope and use more updated data in order to test their theory?

SMH: Racist Russian Instructor Tells African-American Ballerina To “Rub Your Black Off” So She Can Perform

Haters gon’ hate ! Black Ballerina Recalls Racism In Russian Ballet Via Madamenoire reports: It’s no secret that when you think, historically, about ballet, you’ll realize that there haven’t been a slew of black and brown faces. The dance is largely dominated, throughout the world, by whites. But that doesn’t mean black girls haven’t dreamed of tying up their own set of powder pink slippers and stretching their bodies into graceful angles. Eighteen year old Precious Adams, of Detroit, was able to make that dream a reality. Her talent even led her away from the U.S. to pursue ballet at Russia’s iconic Bolshoi Theater. And though the opportunity is great for her career, it hasn’t come without its own set of challenges. In an article from The Moscow Times, Adams explained the discrimination and outright racism she’s had to endure since dancing at the Russian company. In one anecdote, an instructor evaluating which students would be able to participate in the academy’s 240th anniversary celebration, walked up to Adams and asked her plainly, “What are you doing here?” and then told her to leave the audition room. And that’s just the beginning. Adams says she’s been left out of performances and been told to ‘try and rub the black off.’ Adams says she does have allies at the academy but sometimes they are rendered powerless: “Some of the teachers know in the back of their minds that it is unfair, because they know that I can do what these other people are doing just as good if not better than them. Teachers have tried to vouch for me before, but if the almighty voice says it’s not right — it doesn’t look right — then whatever they say goes.” When the Bolshoi Academy was asked to address Adams’ concerns they said that they had not received any complaints of discrimination and noted that all students get to participate in onstage practice and said that Adams has received high marks for her time on stage. Adams said she hasn’t complained about the discrimination she’s faced because she didn’t feel like it would have been taken seriously. “I don’t think there would have been much of a response.” She said that she did not want “to look like I’m weak or that I feel sorry for myself.” We wish Precious not but the best of luck and commend her for her inspiring journey in breaking down racial barriers in ballet.

Soldier Responds to Anti-Muslim Comments, Wins "What Would You Do" Video

A powerful social experiment set out to show the discrimination that many Muslims sadly face every day in America, and the results were quite striking. ABC News’ “What Would You Do” segment recorded people expressing anti-Muslim views and harassment, and captured some disheartening moments. An American soldier ultimately redeems our faith in humanity, though. Unaware he was being set up, he defends a Muslim store clerk from an actor posing as a customer and making defamatory comments about his religion. On this 12th anniversary of 9/11, watch the amazing video below: Anti-Muslim Harassment Reactions

Lucy Eades, Breastfeeding Mom, Stands Up to Woman Telling Her To "Cover Up"

Lucy Eades, a Texas mom breastfeeding in public, was recently asked to cover up. Her response was captured on video by her husband and went viral. See below: Lucy Eades Breastfeeding Discrimination According to ABC affiliate WFAA, the mom of four was nursing her 16-day-old at a local recreation center while her older daughter was in dance class. An employee asked her to cover up , but Eades steadfastly continued to nurse, saying “It is state law, I can nurse my child with or without a cover.” Eades is right: It’s legal to breastfeed in public in all 50 states’ Texas is one of 45 with laws specifically allowing women to do so in any public or private space. Eventually, her husband spoke up too, and the employee walked away; Eades was reportedly the second mom asked to cover up there that day. Later, the City of Burleson (Tex.) said in a statement: “The City of Burleson supports breastfeeding and appreciates recognition of National Breastfeeding Week.” “The city also supports the law, which states ‘A mother is entitled to breast-feed her baby in any location in which the mother is authorized to be.'” “Today, two women were breastfeeding in or near a public entrance to the city’s recreation center where we were hosting a camp for youth ages 5-13 in addition to other recreation center patrons.” “To be respectful of everyone’s rights we asked the women to cover up.” “There is nothing in the law that prohibits the city from requiring a mother to cover up. We also offered a room in an attempt to be more accommodative.” “The city did not attempt to prohibit breastfeeding and fully supports the freedom of mothers to breastfeed as long as it doesn’t infringe on someone else’s freedom.” Reaction online was mixed, with some defending the center’s position while others claiming that if you’re not okay with breastfeeding moms, you’re not “family friendly.” On that note, a “nurse-in” (a popular form of breastfeeding protest), is planned at the recreation center on Saturday, according to multiple reports. What do you think? Should moms breastfeed in public?   Of course! It’s totally natural! And besides, baby’s gotta eat! No way! That’s gross. She can do that somewhere else. View Poll »

Race Matters: Black Hospital Employees Say White Co-Workers Taunted Them With Nooses And Racist Insults – “President Obama Is Black..How Can He Be Smart?”

Black Hospital Employees Taunted By White Co-Workers With Nooses And Racist Comments Two black orderlies employed by North Shore University Hospital in New York are speaking out and heading to court over the racist taunting they face from their white co-workers. via NY Daily News An anesthesiologist and a surgical technician at North Shore University Hospital terrorized black orderlies with nooses and racial epithets, a bombshell lawsuit charges. “Where I work, there are a lot of educated people with an immature way of behaving,” said Elijah Crawford, who filed the discrimination suit in Brooklyn Federal Court with Ishmael Cox. “When I see a noose, it’s a statement of racial hate,” Crawford, 43, told the Daily News Tuesday. “It’s a threat. It’s a sign of terrorism.” The technician, Mario Nistico, admitted hanging a noose from a light fixture in an operating room in the summer of 2011 and affixing a second noose to his locker a year later. Dr. Charles Militana allegedly made crude sexual remarks to Crawford about the size of his genitals and disparaged President Obama because he is black, according to the suit. “How can Obama be smart? He is black,” Militana reportedly said, according to the suit. The Manhassett, L.I., hospital did not report the noose incidents to the Nassau County Police Department and conducted an in-house investigation that resulted in “half-hearted apologies” from Nistico and Militana, both 59, the suit states. Hopefully these idiots faces consequences for their carelessly racist antics. Continue reading

What The Fawk Donald Duck?! Second Black Family Comes Forward Over Disneyland Discrimination

Disneyland is definitely not the happiest place on earth for little black children… It turns out that the white “Alice In Wonderland” rabbit that was hatin’ on lil Elijah and Jason Black ain’t the only racist character at Disneyland. Via NY Daily News reports : The lawyer for a black San Diego family that claimed they were discriminated against by a Disney character during a trip to Disneyland said he’s received dozens of calls from people alleging the same thing. “I’ve gotten many emails and voicemails that I’m looking into. What this tells me is this isn’t an isolated incident,” attorney Dan Gilleon told San Diego’s ABC 10 News. “It doesn’t mean Disneyland is racist, but they have some people in the company who aren’t playing by the rules and are being discriminatory.” On Thursday, a second family came forward to say their two children were ignored by someone playing Donald Duck during a trip to the Magic Kingdom in December. Nastasia White, who is black, told 10 News the person in the duck suit ignored two requests to take a photo with her children, Razzi, 5, and Ryder, 2, and played with white children instead. “[Razzi] was sitting there with his arms open, saying, ‘Donald, Donald!’” White, of Los Angeles, said. White told the station she wasn’t overreacting because the character’s brush-off “was done in a blatant and ugly way.” The White family has hired Gilleon to pursue their case. Disney has not responded to the Daily News’ request for comment. Earlier this week, the company said they carefully review all claims from guests at their parks and hotels. Earlier this week, Jason and Annelia Black, of San Diego, claimed their children and cousins were ignored by someone dressed as the White Rabbit character from “Alice in Wonderland” in August. The Blacks, who are black, claimed the costumed character turned away from them to play with some white and Asian families. Gilleon told the Daily News that Disney officials tried to duck the family’s complaint by offering VIP passes worth $500 in exchange for a signed statement clearing the Magic Kingdom of any wrongdoing. The Black family was suing Disney for violating California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act, which outlaws discrimination based on race, sex and other qualities, Gilleon said. Gilleon claimed the snub was caught on security video, and he plans to subpoena Disney for it. Violation of the Unruh act carries a penalty of $25,000. The Blacks planned to claim anywhere from three to ten violations — based on the number of children present during the alleged snub — and also plans to also seek attorney’s fees and damages, including the cost of the trip, Gilleon said. Kinda funny that the two families involved have the last names White and Black. But there is nothing funny about this discrimination. Disneyland better bow down or pay the fawk up!!! Race Matters–Judge Rules The Bachelor Doesn’t HAVE To Cast Black People

Did anyone other than the two fools who filed this suit ever care about being on The Bachelor anyway? LLS We’re not surprised with the Judge’s ruling one bit. According to TMZ… A judge has THROWN OUT a lawsuit that two black men filed against “The Bachelor” … in which they claimed they were rejected from the show based on the color of their skin. In the original suit, the men pointed out that every bachelor in the show’s history has been white — and claim producers intentionally stayed away from people of color because they feared an interracial relationship would alienate the show’s “predominantly white viewership.” But a Tennessee judge has officially dismissed the case — citing the 1st Amendment (Freedom of Speech) … and explaining that the court cannot tell TV producers … or movie producers … or playwrights … how to cast a production. In fact, the judge explains that Freedom of Speech is why “The Cosby Show” could have an all-black cast … why “Jersey Shore” can cast all-Italians … and why “Shahs of Sunset” can cast all-Persians. A rep for Warner Bros. — which produces the show — tells TMZ, “We felt from the onset this case was completely without merit and we are pleased the Court has found in our favor.” Damn…looks like homeboy isn’t gonna find his one true love on reality TV anytime soon. At least it’s one less show for us to be stereotyped on! Images via facebook

Race Matters: Black Workers At Siemens Plant File Charges Over Noose Left In Locker Room, Metal Shank Rigged To Slice Machinist

Black Workers File Charges Over Racial Discrimination At Siemens Plant This made our blood boil . We had to share it with you. Welder Solomon Daniels had just grabbed his work clothes from his locker at the Siemens plant near Trenton when, he said, he saw the noose out of the corner of his eye, swinging from the shower curtain rod. “I was more or less terrified,” said Daniels, 48, an African American man who lives in Burlington. Horrified by the noose, which evokes lynchings, Daniels looked twice to make sure, then called a coworker into the locker room to witness it. He took pictures. That was Jan. 27. On Friday, Daniels and two other African American employees at Siemens Demag Delaval Turbomachinery Inc. talked to reporters about what they called a factory floor culture of racism and harassment in which African Americans couldn’t get promoted and complaints to the human resources department went nowhere. Represented by lawyer Brian K. Wiley in North Wales, the men have filed complaints with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the New Jersey Division of Civil Rights. “When I first started there, the n-word was like your first name,” said Barry Murphy, 64, of Willingboro. Employed at Siemens since 1966, Murphy, a machinist, wept Friday, saying he came forward so younger black workers wouldn’t have to experience the discrimination he faced. He said there hasn’t been an African American supervisor since the 1980s. “The placement of a noose in a Siemens facility is a deplorable, aggressive act,” Siemens said in a statement, adding that it had hired outside investigators to look into the situation at its plant in Hamilton Township. “Siemens condemns such behavior in the strongest terms,” the statement continued. Siemens said it retrained all personnel in company policies against harassment and discrimination and enclosed copies of the policies in employees’ paychecks. However, the company said that, after reviewing surveillance video and interviewing employees, it could not determine who hung the noose. Daniels said he was asked whether he himself had hung it. “I think that [question] is normal where the work environment is primarily white,” he said. “At the same time, it was hurtful.” He said he told officials he would be willing to take a polygraph test. For machinist Eddie Clarke, 48, of Hatfield, the harassment went beyond the symbolic and annoying to physically threatening. On Feb. 21, 2010, he said, he was coming around the corner, heading toward his tool cabinet, when a metal shank sliced through his pant legs and cut his leg. “I had to pull the metal from my leg,” Clarke wrote in a sworn affidavit. Someone had rigged a metal shank to his tool cabinet in an area where he was the only person working. At the news conference, Clarke said that before the incident he had complained to top company officials about harassment. His supervisor warned him to stop complaining or he’d be the victim of “friendly fire,” Clarke said. All three men, who are still employed, said they loved their jobs but feared for their safety at work. “We have been in contact with federal, state and local authorities,” said Siemens spokeswoman Camille Johnston. She declined to say whether the supervisor had been disciplined. “The company is responding to the EEOC charges as appropriate.” SMH. This is just unacceptable. They rigged the man’s area so he would be shanked??? And it’s not in this report, but another report says the supervisor who warned about “friendly fire” later told dude “I’m surprised you’re still alive.” Source
