Pope’s anti-condom message is sabotage in fight against Aids

Stance makes Catholic church a major global public health problem The Guardian, Saturday 11 September 2010 Condoms do not immunise against infection but they are an effective barrier against the HIV virus. Photograph: Digital Vision / Alamy/Alamy This week the pope is in London. You will have your own views on the discrimination against women, the homophobia, and the international criminal conspiracy to cover up for mass child rape. My special interest is his role in the 2 million people who die of Aids each year. In May 2005, shortly after taking office, the pope made his first pronouncement on Aids, and came out against condoms. He was addressing bishops from South Africa, where somebody dies of Aids every two minutes; Botswana, where 23.9% of adults between 15 and 49 are HIV positive; Swaziland, where 26.1% of adults have HIV; Namibia (a trifling 15%); and Lesotho, 23%. This is continuing. In March 2009, on his flight to Cameroon (where 540,000 people have HIV), Pope Benedict XVI explained that Aids is a tragedy “that cannot be overcome through the distribution of condoms, which even aggravates the problems”. In May 2009, the Congolese bishops conference made a happy announcement: “In all truth, the pope's message which we received with joy has confirmed us in our fight against HIV/Aids. We say no to condoms!” His stance has been supported, in the past year alone, by Cardinal George Pell of Sydney and Cardinal Cormac Murphy O'Connor, the Archbishop of Westminster. “It is quite ridiculous to go on about Aids in Africa and condoms, and the Catholic Church,” says O'Connor. “I talk to priests who say, 'My diocese is flooded with condoms and there is more Aids because of them.'” Some have been more imaginative in their quest to spread the message against condoms. In 2007, Archbishop Francisco Chimoio of Mozambique announced that European condom manufacturers are deliberately infecting condoms with HIV to spread Aids in Africa. Out of every 8 people in Mozambique, one has HIV. It was Cardinal Alfonso L

BA compensates man ‘humiliated’ over child seat policy

BBC News Mirko Fischer, his wife Stefanie and daughter Sophia Mirko Fischer said he worried what message was being sent to children BA has compensated a passenger who was “humiliated' over its policy of not allowing single male flyers to sit next to solo child travellers on its planes. British Airways cabin crew told Mirko Fischer to move after he swapped seats with his wife and ended up sitting next to a boy he did not know. Mr Fischer, 33, accused staff of harassing him and said the policy contravened the Sex Discrimination Act. BA apologised to the businessman but denied the policy was discriminatory. A spokesman told the BBC the policy was now under review. A consent order detailing a settlement between the parties was drawn up at Slough County Court on Wednesday. Mr Fischer was on a flight from London back to his home in Luxembourg on 20 April 2009 when his pregnant wife Stefanie asked him to swap seats so she could sit next to the window. He took her middle seat. Anger He claimed cabin crew told him to return to his original seat as the child next to him was an unaccompanied minor. The crew said the company's policy was not to allow adult males to sit next to unaccompanied children. But Mr Fischer said he felt he was treated as if he was a potential “child molester”. He said: “I felt humiliated and outraged. They accuse you of being some kind of child molester just because you are sitting next to someone.” Continue reading the main story We had 75,000 children fly with us last year and it is an issue we take very seriously BA spokesman BA 'victimises male passengers' Your comments Mr Fischer, who was represented by Daniel Tivadar from law firm 3 Hare Court, said there was a brief discussion and he returned to his seat but felt “embarrassed, humiliated and angry”. He complained to the airline by letter and the airline confirmed the policy, stating it related to adult males travelling alone. Mr Fischer said he was being treated differently to female passengers and therefore BA was breaking the law. He said the conversation he had with cabin crew on the flight “constituted unwanted conduct that related to his sex” and violated his dignity. He also said this consequently created an uncomfortable environment for him on the plane. He said: “There were no raised voices but we were in a public place and there were obviously people around us wondering what was happening.” BA initially defended itself and said when staff originally made the request they genuinely believed Mr Fischer was travelling alone and had no intention of embarrassing, humiliating or angering him by asking him to return to his allocated seat. Mr Fischer said he suffered “loss and damage of injury to his feelings” and had sought compensation. 'No flexibility' BA is understood to have admitted sex discrimination in Mr Fischer's case and agreed to pay

"no bad whores, just bad laws"

SEX workers have rallied in Sydney to demand an end to “whore-phobic” attitudes and greater protection under anti-discrimination laws. Chanting “sex worker rights are human rights” and “no bad whores, just bad laws”, dozens of protesters marched from the Opera House today in a bid to have their rights recognised. Many carried red umbrellas, a symbol of the global movement, while others made statements with T-shirts reading “whore power” and “sluts unite”. “We are human beings, we are people, we do a job and we are continually vilified for that job,” sex worker Julie Bates said, noting that little had changed in the way of community attitudes during her 30-year career. “So whilst we remained silenced, today is a chance for us to speak to the community, so we have a voice. “What we want society to see is that sex work is real damn hard work, and we provide a service like any other industry.” Organised by the Scarlet Alliance, a peak body representing the nation's estimated 20,000 sex workers, the event was one of several staged in capital cities across the country to commemorate International Whores Day. The alliance is using the occasion to lobby state governments for amendments to existing legislation that covers the industry. The campaign focuses on New South Wales, which has the highest concentration of sex workers – about 8000 – yet has inferior anti-discrimination laws compared with other parts of the nation. In the ACT, Queensland and Tasmania, legislation protects against discrimination based on legal sexual activity or occupation, essentially giving mistreated sex workers an avenue for recourse. The most common instances of discrimination reported to the alliance occur during applications for rental properties, bank loans and credit cards. Sex workers are also forced to pay up to five times more than other advertisers in newspapers, and encounter problems when dealing with police and the judicial system, the alliance said. It was often seen when women lost custody cases because of negative stereotypes associated with their jobs. Alliance president Elena Jeffreys said part of the problem stemmed from deep-rooted attitudes within government and mainstream institutions. “They think that sex workers are not part of the community,” she told AAP. “We are absolutely sick of whore-phobic attitudes. “Sex work is legalised, decriminalised, brothels are run in a professional and transparent manner, and sex workers are huge contributors to society, yet we face this discrimination every single day. “It's absolutely untenable and we demand that it be changed.” added by: diode
