Moves Forward: Generic HIV Prevention Drug Set For Release In 2020

Source: Martin Wimmer / Getty Gilead Sciences Announces Generic HIV Drug Coming In 2020 A big move in HIV prevention was announced on Wednesday, when Gilead Sciences revealed that a generic version of Truvada will be available on September 30, 2020. Truvada is the pill taken for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP. It’s usually taken daily to prevent contracting HIV, according to the Center For Disease Control. According to CNBC , Douglas Brooks, Gilead’s executive director for community engagement, said in an email shared by the advocacy group PrEP4All: “Gilead reached an agreement with Teva Pharmaceuticals in 2014 to allow the early launch of a generic version of Truvada into the market in 2020, a year earlier than required.” The info about the generic Truvada is also laid out on page 35 of a Gilead SEC filing , which was released on Wednesday morning. While a month’s supply of generic Truvada is available in certain countries across the globe for as little as $70, a month’s supply of Truvada in the U.S. can run as much as $1,600 to $2,000. Activists have been trying to make the pill more affordable and easily accessible in order to curb the global HIV epidemic. In this year’s State of the Union address, Donald Trump announced his “Ending the HIV Epidemic” plan, which would rely heavily on Truvada in order to prevent the spread of the virus. However, Truvada’s current price threatens to make this plan extremely expensive, according to activists. Previously, in a call with investors in the second quarter of 2017, then-Gilead CEO John Milligan explained, “We don’t expect generic Truvada in the United States until 2021.” However, it seems the access is coming sooner than expected. Activists who’ve been pushing Gilead to #BreakThePatent called the Wednesday news “a victory for the LGBTQ+ community, for HIV activists, and for U.S. taxpayers,” particularly because HIV is still high within Black LGBTQ+ communities. Despite the generic pill news, activists also had their critiques since Teva Pharmaceuticals will be the sole manufacturer of the drug so far. In a statement from the PrEP4All Collaboration, Dr. Aaron S. Lord argued that allowing just one generic manufacturer to make generic PrEP “will do little to reduce the price in a way that will increase access, and PrEP4All remains suspicious of the terms and lack of transparency surrounding the Teva settlement.” PrEP4All had recently publicized info that Gilead’s development and testing of Truvada as PrEP was almost entirely funded by the U.S. government. Therefore the CDC, not Gilead, controls the patent for PrEP. In an email describing the agreement between Gilead and Teva Pharmaceuticals, Gilead’s senior director for community engagement, Douglas Brooks, said, “Pursuant to a settlement agreement reached in 2014 … Teva will be able to launch generic fixed-dose combinations of emtricitabine and TDF … on September 30, 2020.” He continued: “This agreement is not related to current discussions with the U.S. government to broaden access to Truvada for PrEP for vulnerable populations and support the federal plan to end the HIV epidemic. Those discussions are ongoing.” Lets hope that this agreement with Teva will be a move forward to more affordable HIV prevention drugs. Seems like there’s still a lot of work to be done.

Jesus Take The Canine: Dog Bites Off 4-Year-Old’s ENTIRE Hand Then Allegedly Eats It

Source: Burak Karademir / Getty No Words A parent’s worst nightmare went down in Utah recently when it comes to children and animals. In a horrific act, a dog bit off a 4-year-old’s hand when the kid stuck their arm underneath a fence, according to Time . The kid was wearing a sock on their arm when they slipped it between the ground and a solid vinyl fence in a backyard on Sunday. According to the Layton Fire Battalion Chief Jason Cook, a husky on the other side bit off the boy’s entire hand AND two to three inches of his arm. The boy’s dad tried to contain the bleeding and comfort his son until emergency assistance arrived. A helicopter ended up flying the boy to a hospital in Salt Lake City, where he had surgery, Cook said. The child is doing well and is expected to survive, according to officials. Unfortunately, authorities weren’t able to find his hand, which brings about horrifying theories of what the dog could’ve done with it. Police think the dog might’ve eaten it. Animal control officials and medical personnel considered putting down the dog to retrieve the possible hand they ingested, but the surgeon said it wasn’t a viable option. The husky is set to be quarantined for 10 days, said Rhett Nicks, director for Davis County Animal Care and Control. Officials have not decided whether the dog will be put down or listed as a dangerous canine. An investigation is underway. Cook said this was the animal’s first reported bite. It’s not determined whether the dog owners will face consequences. The dog was properly fenced in at the house. Cook didn’t know if the boy was right-handed or not, but he said he should be able to adapt since he’s so young. “He’ll kind of grow into his dexterity,” Cook said. “But it’s certainly life-changing. It’s just a sad turn of events for the young, little guy.” Sad. Unfortunate. And brutal.

HIV Reportedly Cured In Second Person In 10 Years After Stem Cell Transplant

Source: Getty / Getty Scientists have recently found what they believe to be the cure to HIV.  According to reports , a London man who was diagnosed with the virus in 2003 is currently in remission after receiving a special bone marrow transplant intended to treat cancer. In 2016, he received the stem cell transplant from a donor, with a rare CCR5 mutation that allows HIV resistance, to treat his Hodgkin’s lymphoma. But the anonymous man isn’t the first person to allegedly be cured of HIV. Back in 2007, a Berlin man became HIV-free after receiving the same transplant. Author and professor Dr. Ravindra Gupta said in a statement , “By achieving [HIV] remission in a second patient using a similar approach, we have shown that the Berlin patient was not an anomaly, and that it really was the treatment that eliminated HIV in these two people.” Doctors warn that the treatment may not be suitable for every patient, but they plan to do more research to help cure more sufferers in the future. Look at God.

Source: Masonia Traylor / Masonia Traylor When Masonia Traylor tested positive for HIV in 2010, the then-23-year-old was in a state of utter shock. See, since Masonia was a teen, she was adamant on getting tested regardless of being in what she believed were low-risk monogamous relationships. And every year, her tests came back negative, until that day, when it didn’t. “I thought they were lying, that they got somebody’s blood mixed up with mine,” Traylor told HelloBeautiful . Three days later, after she went to see an infectious disease specialist it began to sink in that HIV was her reality. “When they started withdrawing blood from me over and over again, I realized that it was real. This is what was happening and happening to me.” What she didn’t really expect was what she found out next. Two weeks later, she found out she was pregnant with her second child. However, with the help of her doctor’s support and taking her antiretrovirals, Masonia gave birth to a HIV-negative baby girl, who has remained negative for nearly eight years. Traylor, who is currently finishing her degree in public policy, has dedicated her work to being an advocate having served as a campaign ambassador for CDC’s Act Against AIDS, “Stop HIV Together” and Kaiser Family Foundation, “Greater Than Aids- Empowerment & We Are Family” projects. She’s also a blogger and Community Advisory Board member for The Well Project, a non-profit organization geared for women living with HIV/AIDS. For Traylor, she shares her story so that other Black women will see that HIV can happen to anyone. “I started off as a voice to be out there for other women to see that if I had HIV, being who I am, they could too,” adding, “I felt like maybe HIV was quietly rising in the community and people needed to know about it because I can’t be the only one.” She also speaks out as a way to pay homage to a friend who passed away from complications to AIDS. “I lost a friend to complications of AIDS at a time where I wish I known he had known about my status. I wish he would have known that he wasn’t alone.” For National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NBHAAD) , the young mother of two and HIV activist talked to us about what Black women to know about this epidemic, why HIV testing is key and why we need to finally erase stigma for good. HelloBeautiful: Being an HIV advocate, what do you want our community to know? Masonia Traylor: I want for us to understand that we have to care and pay attention if we want this epidemic to shift substantially instead of only progressively. I need my community not to feel forced to accept that I have HIV/AIDS but to respect my journey of living with it. Not to mention, education is an important step towards ending the epidemic but so is taking a stand in our community and honoring values around our sexual health to protect one another. That will put us closer to a cure then we’ll ever need. HB: What do you have to say to other Black women who don’t think HIV can happen to them? MT:  The first word of HIV is human. And as long as you’re human, you’re at risk for this disease. If anything, we shouldn’t be the last ones to think that we can be diagnosed with HIV, we need to be the first ones. And we need to not only protect the next generation to come, but be extremely overprotective of our own health more than anybody else. That, and protecting Black women, protecting ourselves, automatically ends up protecting Black men because they end up respecting us more because we respect ourselves. HB: Even in 2019, there is still so much stigma surrounding HIV. Why is erasing stigma so important? MT:  As a community we need to erase stigma to help encourage those living with the virus to not be afraid nor ashamed to forgive themselves, save themselves, and our community. Stigma inflicts pain, and digs deep scars across our minds and hearts. In order to live unapologetically strong, support is needed and destigmatizing HIV/AIDS needs to be erased in order to be supportive. HB: Why everyone should get tested for HIV? MT:  First off, I don’t think testing everyone is realistic due to certain laws [that require patient’s consent to get tested for HIV] and not everyone wants to know their status. And we should respect that choice. However, I wish everyone would get tested just to help slow down transmission and get control of the spread of this disruptive virus. Although I believe that getting tested is not enough prevention, however testing saved my life and has spared many others. Testing keeps unborn babies from being born with HIV/AIDS too. I think it’s better to know what’s going on in your body then to wait and your body suddenly shuts down due to not being proactive of your health. Take care of your health and your body will take care of you. Testing is part of that. HB: Finally, in a world that tries to shame people for being HIV-positive, how you live with HIV with NO shame? MT: I’m able to live unapologetically with HIV because I understand that no one can judge me harder than I judge myself. I have forgiven myself for trusting someone else with my life over trusting myself more. I understand how I can and cannot transmit the virus. I have birthed an HIV-negative baby as proof that I can still live a normal life. I KNOW that if it can happen to me that no one is exempt nor excluded from possibly contracting HIV or developing AIDS. Like I said earlier, I understand that the H in HIV stands for HUMAN which means that as long as you are human it can happen to you. I’m not ashamed of another’s fear. #BlackAIDSDay: When It Comes To HIV, I Will Be Shameless

Source: Ciarra / Courtesy Ciarra This post originally appeared on  A Girl Like Me , a blog for women and girls on  The Well Project , and is part of collaboration with HelloBeautiful for National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day . I have made a few mistakes in my life. Who am I kidding? I have made MANY mistakes in my life. And I ain’t even been alive that long. Some of those mistakes, I can effortlessly push underneath that figurative rug somewhere and pray I lose the memory. That way, no one else knows about the mistake. I can just act as though it never happened. And keep it moving. But then you have those others. You know, those other mistakes, which are a little more difficult to conceal. They loud. They make themselves known. There ain’t no running or no hiding from these type. Contracting HIV is one of those mistakes for me. This one I can’t escape. Sure, I could have kept the secret to myself. But in order to live healthy and well, I would have had to address it at some point. It wasn’t noooo hiding, shoving, or pushing this one, nowhere. I call it a mistake because I knew I should have used a condom. But I didn’t. I call it a mistake because people had attempted to guide me to safer choices. But I opted to do my own thing. And as a result, I contracted this virus. I contracted this dumb, stupid, ugly virus. If only I had done this or that, I would not be HIV positive today. For other people it may look like: … if only I had studied for that test, I would have passed that class. … if only I had ordered a rideshare that night, I would not have to serve the sentence attached to a DUI. … if only I had used a condom, I might not have contracted chlamydia. Look. I am not ashamed of my HIV positive status because, we have all made mistakes. They may not all look the same, but a mistake is a mistake is a mistake. Right? We all have done something that we wish that we could take back. The HIV mistake makes itself known daily. The reminder comes in the form of a once-a-day pill that I struggle to swallow. Other people may still be able to push their biggest mistakes to the back of their mind. I can’t. I gotta face mine. I’m tryna live and sh*t. Anyways, I’m sure that if we could go back and avoid making these mistakes, we would. And to me, that sounds like growth. So I must ask, what is there to be ashamed of in growth? Decriminalizing HIV: Governor Of California Lowers The Penalty For Exposing Partners To HIV

Mario Tama/Getty Images Jerry Brown Signs New HIV Legislation Starting January 1, 2018, it will no longer be a major crime in California to knowingly expose a sexual partner to HIV without disclosing the infection. Governor Jerry Brown signed legislation on Friday that lowers the offense from a felony to a misdemeanor. The California legislature passed SB 239 on September 11. The law previously punished people who knowingly exposed or infected others with HIV by up to eight years in prison, but this new legislation will lower jail time to a maximum of six months. The new law also reduces the penalty for knowingly donating HIV-infected blood from a felony to a misdemeanor. Bill sponsors Sen. Scott Wiener and Assemblyman Todd Gloria, both Democrats, argued California law was outdated and stigmatized people living with HIV, especially given recent advancements in medicine. Evidence has shown that a person with HIV who undergoes regular treatment has a negligible chance of spreading the infection to others through sexual contact. “The most effective way to reduce HIV infections is to destigmatize HIV,” Wiener told CNN. “To make people comfortable talking about their infection, get tested, get into treatment.” Because the previous law. Wiener said by destigmatizing HIV, the bill would encourage people to get tested, which will in turn lower HIV transmission in the state.
