‘Tron: Legacy’: The Reviews Are In!

Critics call Disney’s reboot/sequel a ‘catchy popcorn pleasure’ that is ‘destined to split audiences.’ By Eric Ditzian “Tron Legacy” Photo: Disney It’s been a good year for studios that waited three decades to update old-school flicks. In April, Warner Bros. gave 1981’s “Clash of the Titans” a coat of CGI splendor and ended up with a film that grossed almost $500 million worldwide. Can Disney, which has resurrected 1982’s computer-world-based adventure film “Tron” for a new generation, mirror the success of “Clash”? At this point, at least, “Tron: Legacy” is receiving far kinder reviews than “Clash.” That doesn’t mean, of course, that “Tron” can top the $61 million domestic opening of the latter. Disney’s 3-D film is predicted to land somewhere in the $40-45 million range. Will it defy expectations? Will positive word of mouth spread? Is the movie worth a trip to the theater on opening weekend? Check out what the critics are saying about “Tron: Legacy” and decide for yourself. The Story “Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), the son of video game developer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), is left as the uninterested heir to his father’s corporation after the elder Flynn’s disappearance 20 years earlier. Following a mysterious signal, Sam finds himself pulled into the same computer world that has trapped his father. Reunited, the Flynns team with a Quorra (Olivia Wilde), a cyber warrior, to defeat Clu, a program left in charge of the Grid whose rise to power puts both the computer world — and our world — in danger.” — Silas Lesnick, ComingSoon.net The Comparison to the Original “[T]his is one of the smartest ideas for a reboot in yonks. Where its fellow 1982 sci-fi releases, ‘E.T.’ and ‘Blade Runner,’ are still universally celebrated, ‘Tron’ ‘s visuals and ponderous tone have aged as badly as Manic Miner. The concept at the Disney film’s core, however, remains beautifully simple: What if a man got sucked into a computer? That notion, revisited with today’s turbo-boosted VFX technology, has now given Mickey Mouse a stonking tentpole. And make no mistake, ‘Tron Legacy’ — part sequel, part remake — is a proper event movie, complete with nattily digitized Cinderella’s Castle at the start, a journey to a fully realized alien world and the best 3D since ‘Avatar.’ ” — Nick de Semlyen, Empire The Effects “The FX in ‘Tron: Legacy’ have an almost Einsteinian elegance: They infuse light with gravity. If one of the discs hits a combatant, he’ll shatter into glassy fragments, and Sam, absorbing the physics of the game, must learn to treat his body almost as part of the surrounding architecture. He becomes a ruthless digital specter. As long as it’s engaged in light-hurling bouts of force, or motorcycle chases through a landscape so ominously enveloping it looks like ‘Blade Runner’ after gentrification, ‘Tron: Legacy’ is a catchy popcorn pleasure.” — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly The Dissenters “This is one of those big-budget projects destined to split audiences (a good thing, always). Directed by Joseph Kosinski, who did the ‘Halo’ and ‘Gears of War’ commercials, ‘Tron: Legacy’ comes to life when Sam, played by a too-cool-for-school Garrett Hedlund, learns the ways of the Lightcycles and the perilous joys of racing on ‘ribbons of light.’ Here, we get the sweep and simple excitement we need. Elsewhere, we get exposition more sluggish than the stuff we had to wade through in the second and third ‘Matrix’ movies, and a strained, opaque brand of intellectual-property mythology that might mean tons to ardent fans of the first ‘Tron,’ but less to others.” — Michael Phillips, Chicago Tribune The Final Word ” ‘Tron: Legacy’ is a surprising film for many reasons, not the least of which being that it contains more substance than is easily explored — if also to some extent, articulated — in just one viewing. And perhaps it might seem like a pre-emptive defense against logical or narrative shortcomings to make one of its central themes the idea that perfection, as we can imagine it, is ultimately unknowable. But it’s a point that’s well-taken, and if I have to endure the kind of imperfection that produces a film like ‘Tron: Legacy,’ which is interesting, inspiring and for better or worse, simply incomparable, then it’s worth it.” – Todd Gilchrist, Cinematical Check out everything we’ve got on “Tron: Legacy.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . African Cats Trailer: Are Baby Lions as Cute as Penguins?

I suppose the trailer for Disney’s nature documentary African Cats kind of begs for a lot of smart-ass jokes about cornering the same “people-like-documentaries-about-cute-stuff” market as March of the Penguins and Babies . So much so that making said jokes seems kind of obvious and futile. Uh…plus that shot of the mother cheetah carrying her cub in her mouth is really adorable.

Johnny Depp in Vanity Fair: Angelina Jolie Rules!

In the latest issue of Vanity Fair , Johnny Depp does not shy away from strong opinions. Arguably the finest actor of his generation, Depp speaks on Angelina Jolie and shares the fears Disney expressed to him over the character of Jack Sparrow. Excerpts from Depp’s interview are below. On working with Angelina Jolie on The Tourist : “You don’t know what she might be like – if she has any sense of humor at all. I was so pleased to find that she is incredibly normal, and has a wonderfully kind of dark, perverse sense of humor.” Who does Angelina remind him of? “I’ve had the honor and the pleasure and the gift of having known Elizabeth Taylor for a number of years. You you know, you sit down with her, she slings hash, she sits there and cusses like a sailor, and she’s hilarious. Angie’s got the same kind of thing, you know, the same approach.” On Disney’s initial reaction to Captain Jack Sparrow : “I think it was Michael Eisner, the head of Disney at the time, who was quoted as saying, ‘He’s ruining the movie.’ Upper-echelon Disney-ites, going, ‘What’s wrong with him? … Is he drunk? By the way, is he gay?’ And so I actually told this woman who was the Disney-ite … ‘But didn’t you know that all my characters are gay?’ Which really made her nervous.” On accidentally falling into acting as a career : “I had no desire, no interest, really in it at all. I was a musician and I was a guitarist, and that’s what I wanted to do.” The Tourist opens on December 10. Check out its official trailer now: The Tourist Trailer

Megamind vs. Saw 3D: A Brief History of Kids Accidentally Seeing the Worst Things Imaginable

Ah, yes: The old, “We took our kids to see one movie, and then they were showed something much, much worse” news story . It’s the type of almost yearly occurrence that warms the hearts of those people who like laughing at the absurd (non)misfortunes of others. In this case, a group of 7-year-old children in Massachusetts went to see Megamind 3D with a couple of parents, only to be shown Saw 3D instead. As one child told his parents, the mere site of the violent images witnessed by his young eyes were enough to make him not want to see another movie ever again.

Demi Lovato Won’t Leave Treatment Facility Next Week

Rep tells MTV News ‘Sonny with a Chance’ star ‘remains committed,’ despite false reports that she would leave for Thanksgiving. By Jocelyn Vena Demi Lovato Photo: Jason LaVeris/ WireImage On Wednesday, reports surfaced that Demi Lovato had plans to leave her treatment facility next week to spend Thanksgiving with her family. Sources told E! News that the Disney star hoped to be home for the holiday. However, a rep for the starlet denies that report in a statement to MTV News. “Recent reports stating that Demi Lovato will be out of treatment by Thanksgiving are false,” the rep tells us. “While she would of course love to be home for the holidays, she remains committed first and foremost to her treatment.” The rep does goes on to say that “Demi has made tremendous progress to date, but understands that she has more work to do. Unfortunately, the news outlet that reported this story originally failed to call us for comment or to fact check the story before it was printed.” Lovato quit her tour with the Jonas Brothers about two weeks ago to deal with “emotional and physical issues.” Last week, Disney released a statement noting that they would revamp Lovato’s series , “Sonny with a Chance,” to reflect her absence, focusing the story line on the inner-workings of the sketch comedy program Lovato’s character, Sonny, appears on, “So Random!” “This allows her the time she needs to get well, without distraction or pressure,” a Disney Channel spokesperson said. “Again, we extend our ongoing support to Demi and her family as she works to overcome personal issues.” The show’s new format will focus on a beefed-up version of “So Random!” packed with guest stars, performances and digital shorts. Shooting for the revamped show will kick off in January, as originally scheduled. Send your well-wishes to Demi Lovato in the comments section below. ‘Jersey Shore’ Star Vinny Wants To Meet Selena Gomez ‘If She’s 18’

Vinny tries to make a date with the Disney star at the VMAs. By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting by James Montgomery Selena Gomez attends the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/WireImage The VMAs are a place for celebrities to meet up or perhaps meet for the first time. For instance, Justin Bieber got the chance to catch up with pals Katy Perry and Rihanna. So, when MTV News caught up with Vinny from “Jersey Shore” on the VMA white carpet, we asked who he wanted to meet at the big show. He told us he had his sights set on one Disney princess. ” Selena Gomez ,” Vinny said, quickly adding, “if she’s 18.” Lucky for Vinny, Gomez turned 18 earlier this year. However, Vinny may not be happy to hear Gomez’s reaction to his flirtatious advances. “I am [a big ‘Jersey Shore’ fan],” she said. When told that the “Jersey Shore” star wanted to meet her “if she’s 18,” she replied, “Tonight, I’m not 18! My mom would kill me! I will say I am a very big fan though, a very big fan, and I do look forward to meeting them, but that’s as far as it goes.” While Vinny’s dream to meet Gomez may not have come to fruition, an exclusive clip from this season of “Jersey Shore” debuted during the VMAs, and it seems that Snooki and Angelina don’t share the same polite admiration for each other that Selena and Vinny have for one another. In the clip, drama ensues after a guy Snooki brought home seems to gravitate to or get hit on by Angelina. Snooki explains that it’s not the first time she and Angelina have both pursued the same guy. The spat prompts Angelina to vent her feelings about the entire cast. “I don’t give a f— about anybody in this house. All of yous in this house are f—ing fake. And I want you all to know that I can’t stand any of yous. Fake mother—-ers, all of you.” The Moonmen have all been handed out and the stars have gone home, but there’s plenty of 2010 MTV Video Music Awards news, interviews, behind-the-scenes scoop, party reports and more still to come, so keep it locked on MTVNews.com.
