Woody Harrelson Avoids Being ‘Phony Drunk’ In ‘Hunger Games’

But he also didn’t want to actually drink during filming — like he had done before — to play Haymitch. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Woody Harrelson Photo: MTV News Anyone familiar with “The Hunger Games” books knows the character Haymitch Abernathy is mostly memorable for one thing: drunkenness. Sure, his character has a more multifaceted arc over the course of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy, but in speaking of the first book and film adaptation, Haymitch’s most recognizable trait is his near-constant intoxication. When MTV News caught up with Woody Harrelson recently, the man who will be bringing the District 12 victor and mentor to life via the big-screen adaptation on March 23, we him how he approached his character’s inebriation. “It’s an intriguing thing for me to play, because it’s not something I’ve had that much opportunity to play,” Harrelson said. “I was a little bit worried about looking phony, that phony drunk thing. Some Method actors might go drunk onscreen; I can’t do that. I tried it one time,” he admitted. “When I was doing ‘Indecent Proposal,’ I had this one scene, and I was supposed to be really drunk, contesting Robert Redford’s love for Demi Moore, and I got smashed because I was supposed to be, so I rationalized it, and that wasn’t a pleasant experience.” Harrelson said he and “Games” director Gary Ross spent time coming up with the right level of inebriation, a point that suited the character but did not completely detract or distract from the story. “There was a thing with me and Gary trying to decide the level of drunkenness in any given scene, and I was always pushing for more drunk, and he didn’t want me to be drunk in every scene,” he said. “He was always pulling back, and I was always pushing for more just because I think it’s kind of funny and interesting. Knowing Gary, he got the right balance.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Hunger Games’ Star Jennifer Lawrence A ‘Powerful Person’

‘Like Crazy’ co-star Anton Yelchin saw Lawrence ‘transform’ into Katniss Everdeen at the gym. By Eric Ditzian Jennifer Lawrence in “The Hunger Games” Photo: Lionsgate We’d heard “Hunger Games” star Jennifer Lawrence talk about the intensity of her workouts to prepare for the role of the arrow-slinging reluctant warrior Katniss Everdeen . And we’d heard director Gary Ross brag on his star’s behalf, using phrases like “intensely physical,” “physically demanding” and “very rigorous” to describe Lawrence’s training program. But the Oscar-nominated actress’ physical transformation into the District 12 tribute didn’t really hit home until we checked out the “Hunger Games” teaser footage we debuted in August at the MTV Video Music Awards. We just didn’t know what to expect. Her “Like Crazy” co-star Anton Yelchin, however, knew exactly what was coming. Months after their romantic drama premiered at Sundance (and walked away with the Grand Jury Prize), the duo ended up at the same gym, prepping for the next steps in their cinematic careers. “I was training for a film called ‘Odd Thomas’ that I was doing at the same gym Jen was training [at for] the bow stuff and all the running,” Yelchin told MTV News recently. “I got to see her and talk to her. I think she’s amazing, and she’s a good friend of mine.” And after checking out the “Hunger Games” teaser, Yelchin had firsthand knowledge of what it took for Lawrence to become Katniss. He was impressed, but not surprised. “When I saw Jen, it was different kinds of physical training she was going through, like running training,” he said. “She’s such a powerful person. She can do anything she puts her mind to. If she needs to transform for something, she’ll transform. If she needs to learn how to kill you with the bow, she’ll do that. She’ll do anything she needs to do.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Hunger Games.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Cali Swag District Recall Last Moments With M-Bone

‘We was just chilling,’ C-Smoove tells ‘RapFix Live’ of being in the studio with M-Bone the day he was killed. By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway Cali Swag District on “RapFix Live” Photo: MTV News Cali Swag District just dropped their new album, The Kickback, on Tuesday, following the success of their massive hit “Teach Me How to Dougie.” But the accomplishment is bittersweet since it arrived nearly two months after the murder of Mante “M-Bone” Talbert . The remaining members of the group — Yung, C-Smoove and JayAre — hit MTV News’ “Rap Fix Live” on Wednesday (July 13) and, after refuting rumors that they were involved in M-Bone’s death, talked about the last time they each spoke to their late friend. “We was talking about shoes. I just bought the Cool Greys, the Jordans,” Yung said of his last conversation with M-Bone. “He was like, ‘Man, I can’t find those nowhere, let me buy them from you.’ And I just had bought ’em, and I was like, ‘Nah.’ And [then], I was like, ‘You know what? I don’t even want them.’ But then I was like, ‘No, but I do.’ And then he was like, ‘Fine, I’m just going to go buy them myself.’ So what he did was he went to the store and he bought them and he took a picture of them [and sent it to all of us]. I was like, ‘It’s all good, though. We all got them, so we a team, you feel me?’ I used to tell him that all the time, I used to be like, ‘Yo, we a team, B.’ ” JayAre was playing a video game with his fallen friend the last he saw him alive. “I think the last time we talked, we was playing [NBA 2K11] or something,” JayAre said. “I always got the Lakers, he played with the Heat. He was a Heat fan. I think he won that game that time.” C-Smoove said, “Last time I talked to Bone, he was like, ‘Hey, is Kickback jumping?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, man, we up here.’ He was like, ‘I’m on my way.’ Came to the studio; he came comfortable man — basketball shorts, little Heat jacket, some Nikes or something — he wasn’t even trying to impress nobody. He was just up there chilling in his little giddy-up. He just woke up, drove to the studio. We was just chilling. “And that’s right before he went to the store, man,” Smoove recalled. M-Bone was shot in his car on La Brea Avenue, not far from the Inglewood, California spot Airport Liquor and Groceries. “That was the last time I talked to him.” Smoove’s comment sparked a particularly fond memory for another member of the group. “I remember that whole day too,” Yung said. “I remember we all was at Smoove’s house for his birthday. [M-Bone] pulled up on the side. We all sitting in the cars and stuff, we got girls out there, ’cause we always got girls somewhere. It’s like 20 people, [and] like 19 of them was girls. So we out there, and Bone, he wasn’t there. And he just pulled up in his Camaro and he was like, ‘What’s going on here?!’ I was like, ‘Don’t worry about it; either you with us or you ain’t.’ And he was like, ‘I’m with you.’ So he parked and hopped in the car and then he was with us.” M-Bone’s murder remains unsolved. G-Unit signee Shawty Lo will also join Sway on the ‘RapFix’ couch at 4 p.m. on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Cali Swag District Photo: Courtesy of Checkmate Music Group/Capitol Records Cali Swag District has been making quite a few headlines of late. From their ubiquitous 2010 dance hit “Teach Me How to Dougie” to the death of group member Mante “M-Bone” Talbert in May, CSD has seen both ups and downs. With their debut album The Kickback in stores this week, C-Smoove, Yung and JayAre will stop by “RapFix Live” to talk with host Sway about their trials and tribulations today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. The remaining Cali Swag members have stood strong, promising to continue representing for M-Bone. The CA trio will be chatting with Sway, as well as taking your questions via Twitter, @MTVRapFix with the hashtag #rapfixlive. That’s not all; G-Unit’s newest addition Shawty Lo will be making an appearance on “RapFix Live” too. In June, the Atlanta rapper confirmed that he signed with 50’s crew . This past weekend, MTV News caught up with Fif, Shawty and Kidd Kidd on the set of Tony Yayo’s “Haters,” and now, L-O will sit down with Sway on the “RapFix” couch. This week also marks the 20th anniversary of “Boyz N the Hood,” the groundbreaking, John Singleton-directed film that starred Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., Morris Chestnut and Nia Long. The L.A.-based movie depicted the violent realities of California’s inner-cities in the early 1990s and is hailed as a classic among the hip-hop community, so it’s only right for “RapFix” to celebrate the occasion. We also have news updates from Lil Wayne, Pitbull and Wyclef Jean. You won’t want to miss this episode of “RapFix Live”! Tune in to “RapFix Live” today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Cali Swag District’s Debut, The Kickback, Drops July 12

Album’s release comes just two months after the tragic death of group member M-Bone, who’ll be featured on the cover. By Rob Markman Cali Swag District Photo: MTV News On July 12, hip-hop group Cali Swag District will release their debut album in memory of their fallen member, M-Bone. The Kickback, distributed by Sony RED, will feature 15 tracks including the group’s 2010 platinum hit “Teach Me How to Dougie” and their next official single, “Burn Out (Drive Fast).” The release will come just two months after CSD’s Mante “M-Bone” Talbert was tragically gunned down in a drive-by shooting in Inglewood, California. “We’re sure that M-Bone is doin’ the Dougie at the gates of heaven, and we know he would want us to keep the movement goin’ here,” CSD’s Yung said in a press release issued to MTV News. The three remaining members of Cali Swag told MTV News that they had no plans to replace M-Bone , and though the energetic dancer was laid to rest on May 27, he will still appear on the cover to The Kickback. Bone is shown doing a handstand on the album’s cover while the rest of CSD look on in amazement. “We’re just focused on staying positive and doing what we were doing prior to this incident,” CSD’s C-Smoove told MTV News recently. “Basically, make M-Bone’s legacy and his name live on through us forever, as long as we do it. We don’t feel like this is a time for us to stop. We feel like this is a time for us to go harder.” At approximately 10:30 p.m. PT on May 15, police were called to the 400 block of La Brea Avenue in Inglewood. When they arrived on the scene, they founded Talbert seated in the driver’s seat of his vehicle with two gunshot wounds to the head. Witness accounts confirm that a gunman pulled up alongside M-Bone in a separate vehicle and let off at least two rounds. Since his death, artists including Jermaine Dupri, B.o.B and New Boyz have spoken out, remembering M-Bone’s positive energy and penchant for dancing. The Inglewood Police Department is asking anyone with information regarding the murder of Mante “M-Bone” Talbert to come forward and call its homicide division at (310) 412-5246 or its 24-hour anonymous hot line at (888) 41-CRIME (888-412-7463).
