‘The Jay Leno Show’ Comes To An End

Surprise guests Donald Trump and Kurt Warner join Ashton Kutcher and others to close out Leno’s prime-time experiment. By Josh Wigler Jay Leno on “The Jay Leno Show” Tuesday Photo: NBC With his return as the host of “The Tonight Show” just a few short weeks away, Jay Leno’s final outing on “The Jay Leno Show” was something of a subdued affair. The tone was lighthearted and guests were agreeable, but Leno’s final prime-time hosting gig lacked the same emotional punch that outgoing “Tonight Show” host Conan O’Brien enjoyed in his closing moments on the air. “This show was supposed to last two years, but my sentence was reduced to five months for good behavior,” Leno quipped during the show’s opening monologue. The remainder of Leno’s opening bit contained jabs at President Barack Obama, the recent sex scandal involving former senator John Edwards and Sarah Palin’s recently revealed habit of reading notes off her hand during speaking engagements. Leno also took the time to discuss the many commercials aired during Sunday’s Super Bowl, though he curiously failed to acknowledge the much-buzzed advertisement featuring himself, David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey . Following his monologue, Leno took a few moments to reflect on the five-month run of “The Jay Leno Show,” showing a series of doctored clips that altered the show’s more notorious moments — for example, Leno’s famous mention of Kanye West’s mother following the musician’s misconduct at the MTV Video Music Awards featured an alternate ending where West furiously smacked Leno in the face. At the end of the retrospective, special guest Donald Trump appeared via satellite to offer Leno his signature line: “You’re fired!” Leno’s two announced guests of the evening were “Valentine’s Day” actor Ashton Kutcher and Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe, who reflected on her recent brushes with celebrity. Kutcher was the subject of the show’s more humorous moments, including a bit where he fielded passes from recently retired Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner through harsh weather conditions. But Kutcher also took a turn for the serious when he revealed his and wife Demi Moore’s plans to launch the DNA Foundation, an organization dedicated to ending human trafficking. Acclaimed sports journalist and personality Bob Costas was the final guest of the evening and also the last subject of Leno’s final 10@10 segment, during which the host asks a series of 10 predetermined questions. Over the course of the rapid-fire interview, Costas revealed that he lied in college to get a job as a hockey sportscaster, he has been confused for other sports personalities including Marv Albert in the past, and he carries a lucky Topps baseball card of Mickey Mantle circa 1958. He also mentioned that the settlement of a longtime feud between himself and former running back Marshall Faulk gave him hope that one day, Jay Leno and David Letterman could repair their own strained relationship. In the show’s closing moments, Leno thanked Costas for his participation as the last ever 10@10 interviewee. But before the talk-show host could give any closing comments to the gathered audience, the feed ended abruptly and transitioned directly into NBC’s scheduled news program. The show’s unceremonious sendoff offered a stark reminder that Leno’s departure from the airwaves is only temporary.

Lil Wayne To Be Sentenced Today

Rapper is expected to turn himself in after sentencing and immediately begin his prison term. By Jayson Rodriguez Lil Wayne Photo: Andy Kropa/ Getty Images Lil Wayne, easily the hardest-working MC in hip-hop, will have his career come to a screeching halt when a Manhattan judge formally sentences the rapper to a one-year prison term Tuesday (February 9). The move is the final process in the case, which dates back to July 2007, when Lil Wayne was arrested for gun possession in New York following his first headlining concert in the Big Apple. In October, the Cash Money superstar struck a deal with prosecutors that saw him plead guilty to a reduced charge of attempted gun possession. He’s now expected to serve up to 10 months in prison with the possibility of an early release after eight months for good behavior. The rapper was originally facing as much as 15 years behind bars; New York is among the toughest states in the country when it comes to gun laws for individuals not affiliated with law enforcement. Lil Wayne will appear before Judge Charles H. Solomon on Tuesday morning, where he will formally enter his plea and likely turn himself in to immediately begin his sentence. The firearm in question was registered to Wayne’s manager, Cortez Bryant (and not found on Wayne by police), and the rapper’s attorney attempted to have the case dropped through DNA challenges. Wayne’s defense also sought to have the case dismissed after authorities handling the case misprinted information on the arrest report. The rapper eventually decided to reach a plea deal with the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office. In New York, stringent gun laws were enacted during former Governor George Pataki’s administration. In a different state, the rapper could have been levied a fine and probation for the same offense. Wayne pleaded guilty in the case because attempted possession carries almost the same threat of punishment as full possession. “Possession is defined as actual possession or dominion or control. … We said it was dominion and control,” Joan Illuzzi-Orbon explained to MTV News after the deal was announced. The distinction is that the weapon was potentially something available for immediate use. In other words, the threat of controlling the weapon is just as much of a crime as actually controlling one in New York. “Basically, the old law [prior to Pataki’s tenure] required someone to have a loaded weapon and intend to use it [before] the mandatory minimum would kick in,” said Scott Leemon, a defense attorney in New York who has represented G-Unit’s Tony Yayo in the past. “And basically, what they did is they took that out of the law. So the mere possession of a loaded weapon in New York State is a felony.” Lil Wayne has been busy in the weeks leading up to his sentencing. In December, he performed his final hometown show before his jail time. The rapper has also furiously been at work on the forthcoming Tha Carter IV, which will likely see a release by the end of 2010. He also is still facing charges in Arizona , and his trial is set to begin March 30. Despite the challenges the rapper is facing, experts expect Lil Wayne to quietly serve his jail time and continue leading one of the biggest careers in music afterward. “Wayne is from the streets, from the Magnolia Houses in New Orleans, so I’m sure those guys have been in jail or locked up at some point,” retired NYPD Detective Derrick Parker told MTV News. “So being in prison is no big deal to them.” Related Videos Lil Wayne Goes To Jail

Audi’s anti environment SuperBowl ad: Thanks for nothing.

And so the green movement is being marketed to men. Or so Audi pretends in their Superbowl ad for their TDI Diesel (which can be converted to a biodiesel if you have a station in your home town). Ya know, I like that Audi makes TDI’s. I do. I hate this ad. While on the surface it almost looks like a PSA that educates about the basic environmental practices in re: to plastics, battery recycling, composting, styrofoam and water usage; after viewing it I walked away with the odd association of feeling constricted and constrained by doing all of those small daily practices for the environment. What’s up with police state over monitoring my every move? (At least I would have gotten a laugh if they had broken in on a sex seen for some un-green sex practices…that’s SuperBowl Sunday appropriate, no?) Frankly, I walked away with an anti-green feeling and irritation towards anyone between me and my ability to do the basic little things I enjoy in life (like eating, and grocery shopping, and hot-tubbing). Look Audi, go ahead and make your cars, but don’t go and F up all the work that so many environmental organizations have been developing to promote and educate that small changes in every day life can be easy to do and can make a difference. The need for liberation and freedom imprinted in men’s DNA (this we have been taught via car commercials) was finally accomplished by breaking out of the line and driving the open road in Audi’s “green” car. Awesome. So this wasn’t about being green, this was just about a need for speed, and escape from the entrapment of family (perhaps I’m being harsh, perhaps this is really a pro-marriage ad….maybe the real underlying message is If you only had a woman to deal with all of those domestic chores you wouldn’t get stuck in silly entrapments, hence you would ultimately have more opportunity to roam the open road…) Bah. Enough over analyzing. It’s kind of sad that I feel the need to dig deep into this ad to find some underlying messaging. But I offer this act of mindsturbation as a favor to Audi; otherwise all that would be left to say is, 'hey look, there goes Audi greenwashing' (c’mon guys, driving a car is just plain wasteful and harmful to the environment). So do us a favor, stick to selling your cars via the messaging about freedom and liberation that comes with having a car. Leave the environmental messaging to people who..well…care. Believe me, we’ll respect you for it in the morning. added by: leahl

Pig lung transplants for humans move closer

Animal organ transplants in humans are now a step closer to reality: Scientists have successfully combined animal lungs with human blood, keeping a pig lung alive and functioning as the blood flowed through it. “The blood went into the lungs without oxygen and came out with oxygen, which is the exact function of the lungs,” a researcher tells the Daily Telegraph.

Andrew Young: John Edwards Apology Just "Empty Words"

The former aide who helped John Edwards cover up his affair and love child with Rielle Hunter is dismissing his former boss’ long-overdue confession yesterday as mere “empty words” that are nothing more than a desperate PR campaign.
