In Project Nim we are invited to observe the tics, tweaks, and expressive details embedded in the story of a behavioral experiment as told by the social scientists who attempted to raise a chimpanzee as a human being. The camera is its own kind of cage, and director James Marsh ( Man on Wire ) frames all of the key players in the quintessentially 1970’s project as captive specimens. Each interview subject sits before the same gray background and is introduced with a showy, investigative pan; a second pan away signals that subject’s release from the narrative. Between pans the players speak to the camera, and their emotions, aversions, contradictions and language choices embellish the oral history with unintended ironies. Very quickly it becomes clear that the life of Nim Chimpsky is foremost a story about the human animal, and human behavior.
Actor Michael Rapaport was such a passionate fan of hip-hop legends A Tribe Called Quest , it’s almost tragic what happened after he was granted permission to film the group, reunited after disbanding in 1998, for his directorial debut in the documentary Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest . Having captured incredibly intimate footage of members Phife Dawg, Q-Tip, Jarobi White, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad — along with a veritable oral history of the ’90s-era Native Tongues hip-hop movement culled from musical luminaries of past and present — Rapaport found himself on the outs with A Tribe Called Quest just as his passion project was on the brink of a distribution deal.

‘I’m back with Dr. Dre, which is a bonus and dope for me,’ Game tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Dr. Dre Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage For Game , the fourth time’s the charm. The former G-Unit rapper has high hopes for album #4, The R.E.D. Album, which is set to be released August 23. While a Game album is notable in its own right, the Compton, California, MC is particularly excited now that he has reunited with mentor Dr. Dre and snagged Pharrell to help oversee the production as well. “This album is the most incredible album of my career,” Game said to MTV News from the set of his “Pot of Gold” video shoot last week. “First, I’m back with Dr. Dre, which is a bonus and dope for me. Second, executive-produced by Pharrell, co-executive-produced by myself and Mars.” There is also production from Cool & Dre, Hit-Boy, Maestro and Lex Luger and features ranging from Nelly Furtado to Lil Wayne to Busta Rhymes. “And Dre’s rapping on the album,” Game revealed. Dre, who oversaw Game’s debut, The Documentary, has played a limited role in the rapper’s career since Game’s fallout with 50 Cent, who is also signed to Dre’s Aftermath imprint. Since then, the West Coast production icon hasn’t lent beats or his vocals to any of Game’s subsequent albums. In 2009, studio pictures of Dr. Dre, Game and Snoop surfaced, proving that the two were back to work in some capacity. Game wouldn’t confirm whether Dre provided a full verse or a hook. When asked, he just blurted out the album’s release date: “August 29.” What are you expecting from a new Game/Dre collabo? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists The Game Dr. Dre
‘It was confusing to me,’ director tells ‘RapFix Live’ in response to the MC encouraging rappers to tell their own stories. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Kara Warner Michael Rappaport Photo: MTV News Despite all of the controversy surrounding “Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest,” ATCQ’s Q-Tip has encouraged fans to see the documentary, which is now playing in select cities. The Queens MC has bucked at how the group was portrayed in the film, and during a visit to “RapFix Live” this past March, Tip encouraged other rap artists to tell their own stories. The doc’s director, Michael Rapaport, who has weathered criticism from Tip in the past, appeared on “RapFix Live” Wednesday (June 29) and admitted that he was confused by the rapper’s comments on the live stream. “We crack the mold, we break the rules. We define this culture that we in right now, this Western culture, the sh– that’s moving around the world, whether it be Tribe to Lil Wayne, Drake to Kanye, I don’t care,” Q-Tip said to Sway back in March. “This hip-hop sh– is our sh–, and when we start moving in, control your stories, man. Tell your stories — that’s what I learned from this.” “I don’t understand what [Q-Tip] was talkin’ about with ‘telling their own stories,’ ” Rapaport told MTV News. “I don’t know if it was like, ‘Hip-hop artists should direct movies about hip-hop artists,’ or maybe he was saying, ‘I should direct a documentary about myself,’ which has never been done before.” Rapaport argued that a filmmaker doesn’t need to be a hip-hop artist to effectively document the culture on film and used “Goodfellas” and “Casino” director Martin Scorsese to illustrate his point. “Martin Scorsese does movies about gangsters, and if you’ve ever been around Martin Scorsese, he’s the furthest thing from a gangster, so I don’t understand the thing about ‘tell the stories yourself,’ ” Rapaport said, sounding perplexed. “I don’t know if he meant, ‘We’re from hip-hop, it should be a hip-hop director’ or — I don’t know who would go under the auspices of being a hip-hop director. Or if it was a racial thing like, ‘We’re black and shouldn’t have a white director.’ It was confusing to me.” The filmmaker did acknowledge that despite the back and forth between him and the rapper, he did appreciate Q-Tip asking fans to support the movie. Whether the two can reconcile is up in the air. According to Rapaport, the last time he heard from Tip was through email and it seems that the message was less than encouraging. “I haven’t talked to Q-Tip,” he said. “Last time I heard from Q-Tip he sent me an email and he said, ‘All you gotta do is stay white and be privileged.’ ” What do you think of Michael Rapaport’s response to Q-Tip on “RapFix Live”? Rapper tweets that he’s being held after being denied entry into the country for a scheduled concert. By Alvin Blanco The Game (file) Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic The Game is not having a good time on April 20 (Wednesday). The Compton rapper was on the way to Canada from Los Angeles when he was detained at customs for three hours. The “Hate It or Love It” MC was headed to Nova Scotia for a show at the Halifax Forum, whose website now notes that the performance has been canceled. The Game kept fans abreast of his situation via Twitter . “Been in Customs for 3 hours……. #patienceIsAvirtue” was Game’s first tweet from his @thegame account regarding his travel troubles. The next succession of tweets revealed his border troubles were going from bad to worse. “Customs officials just denied me entry into Canada. I’m sorry 2 ALL my fans but I was mislead by promoters & assured I would be able 2 enter,” he tweeted. The Game then informed his followers that he is going to be detained for 14 days, after which he will go before a judge that will determine if he’ll be deported or jailed for violating Canada’s immigration entry laws. The information flow came to a stop after he tweeted that his phone and property were being confiscated by officials. Patricia Giolti, a representative of the Canada Border Service Agency, told MTV News that the information Game relayed before his phone privileges were yanked is incorrect. According to Canadian legislation, when a foreign national is detained, they must have a detention review hearing before the Immigration and Refugee Board within 48 hours of their detention. However, Canada’s Privacy Act prevented Giolti from commenting on the specifics of the Game’s file. Ironically, before boarding his plane to Canada, the rapper tweeted that he had not been to the country since the release of his debut album, The Documentary, in 2005. The Game recently filmed the video for the Cool & Dre-produced “Red Nation,” the lead single from his forthcoming release, The R.E.D. Album. MTV News’ calls to representatives of the Game were not returned at press time. Related Artists The Game
