Inside the Long Beach Cruise Terminal, lights shined down on the wooden coffin adorned with red and white flowers. Two jumbo screens on opposite sides of his casket flashed six different photos of the singer from a childhood boy, when he was known to family as “Buddy,” to the platinum singer known to the world as Nate Dogg. West Coast rap artists including Dr. Dre, Game, DJ Quik, Mack-10 and WC, DJ Pooh, Battlecat and others were on hand to pay their respects to the singer with platinum vocal chords. “1986, Poly High School, that’s where we connected for the first time,” an emotionally distraught Snoop reflected on his friend. “We didn’t know each other, but the music connected us. We built a brotherhood, a friendship.” Snoop first met Nate along with his best friend Warren G at the school where they would go on to form the rap trio 213. Warren G spoke briefly, reminding mourners in attendance what a great man the music world has lost. “It hurts me so much to see this,” Warren G said somberly while looking down at the casket. “We been through a whole lot and that was my dog. He stayed down with me from the bottom to the top. I didn’t ever think I would have to sit at a funeral for one of my dogs. All I can say is that was my friend, me him and Snoop was 213 from the balls to the walls. The music industry lost an incredible artist.” Several of Nate’s closest friends, relatives and colleagues including Xzibit, Daz and Kurupt, Butch Cassidy, Los Angeles radio station personality Big Boy from Power 106, and producer FredWreck all shared memorable stories of their friend, who they said made an important impact on their lives. Xzibit recalled a time during the Up in Smoke Tour when Nate was arrested, but hours later somehow magically appeared at the show’s next date. A teary-eyed Kurupt said Nate was the father figure who raised him. Manager Rod McGrew acted as Nate’s manager throughout his professional music career and was with him up until his last days. “He fought a hard fight,” McGrew said. He also thanked Dr. Dre and Eminem, in addition to Snoop, Warren G and Xzibit, for assisting the family in getting through the past several days. “The last three years were unbelievable. He didn’t give up. He just had a talk with God and gave up. Two hours before that he was fine.” McGrew said that with Nate’s passing, the singer’s three wishes will now be granted. “He wanted to go to heaven and hang with his boys,” McGrew said. “He loved Tupac. He recorded with him. He wanted to hang with Biggie. But the most important thing is that he can walk around heaven with his favorite artist of all time, Michael Jackson.” With his deep, melodic voice and smooth soul rumble, Dogg was one of the key elements in the rise of the West Coast G-Funk sound pioneered by Death Row Records in the early 1990s. Along with Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Warren G, Nate was a critical participant in a number of major left-coast gangsta hits, including G’s “Regulate” and Dre’s iconic solo debut, 1992’s The Chronic. The hip-hop singer passed away earlier this month after suffering multiple health setbacks in the past several years stemming from separate strokes. The choir that sang during Nate’s home-going was handpicked by the singer himself. One of its members, Jacob Lusk , is currently a contestant on “American Idol.” “He was a loving caring individual,” said Snoop. “If you listen to his music, he took church melodies and flipped it with hip-hop. I’m so honored, so happy that you gave me the opportunity, God, to know Nate Dogg. I want to stand here and cry, but I have to have the strength for you Nate Dogg. Looks like I’m not the only bottom feeder…. I wasn’t going to post this because I thought it would get me arrested, it must be illegal but then I realized that I am not the person who put the video up, and really there’s far worse a person could be doing to a dog in video, like fucking it up its little dog ass, or making it fight with other dogs until death, I mean a girl liking the strength and ability of a tongue evolved to lick things out of the weirdest places, is weird, maybe a little disgusting, maybe a little inappropriate, but you’d be surprised with just how much some people love their pets, or how some people put their pets to work…It’s a sick world out there, and I’m just documenting it. On a sidenote, I used to know a dude who let his dog lick his ass when he jerked off. I knew another girl would would let her dog lick up her boyfriends cum off her belly. And the urban legend of the woman and her peanut butter that I’ve heard in 14 countries in 8 different languages….meaning maybe playing with your dog’s been going on as long as people have had dogs.. We’ll never know…cuz dogs keep secrets.
MTV News catches up with director Darren Aronofsky and actress Mila Kunis after the good news. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman in “Black Swan” Photo: Fox Searchlight Reactions to Tuesday morning’s (December 14) Golden Globe nominations are coming in fast and furious, with a mix of pleasant surprise and full-on jubilation from the nominees. Two of those happy campers are “Black Swan” Best Director nominee Darren Aronofsky and Best Supporting Actress honoree Mila Kunis. MTV News was lucky enough to catch Aronofsky and Kunis on the phone for brief chats about their big news. “I’m in Paris bouncing around doing press,” Aronofsky said. “I got an e-mail last night from Scott [Franklin], my producer, and he was like, ‘The announcements come out tomorrow.’ That was the first I heard of it,” he admitted. “It’s always exciting. It means so much for these smaller films to get this type of recognition. It really helped us on ‘The Wrestler,’ and I’d imagine it’ll help us this time as well.” (Click here for photos of this year’s biggest nominees!) Aronofsky’s much buzzed-about supporting star Kunis was similarly out of the loop with the nomination news. “I’m in L.A. I genuinely didn’t know. I was happily asleep,” Kunis revealed. “I kind of just forgot. I went to sleep at midnight or 1 and all happy to sleep in till 10 a.m., and then my phone wouldn’t stop ringing at, like, 5:30 a.m. I was half-asleep, and I was like, ‘What the f—happened?’ I was like, ‘Somebody must have died.’ That’s how I found out.” Aronofsky said he and “Black Swan” actor Vincent Cassell already had plans to go out to dinner on Tuesday night, but now that dinner might include a celebratory bottle of champagne. Kunis, meanwhile, has some errands to run. “I have to take my dogs to the vet. And then I have to go do ADR for a film,” she said, referring to automated dialogue replacement, a process used by movies in post-production to have actors dub in lines that need to be tweaked or added to the finished film. “Maybe tonight. Maybe I’ll have some champagne. Is that what people do when they celebrate? Sloppy joes?” Kunis jokingly added that she’ll be making plans to take out the competition. “One person at a time. That’s the only way to do it, right?” she joked. “Are you kidding me? Being nominated is a huge thing for me.” Aronofsky went on to say that he is just plain excited — both for the film’s recognition and for its wider release and reception nationwide. “It’s working well in all the cities we’ve been in. I think there’s a lot of buzz,” he said. “The fear at the beginning when we were trying to raise the money was, who is this film for? It’s erotic. It’s ballet. It’s a horror film. Everyone thought it would fall through the cracks, and I just kept telling people, ‘Hey, we’re just trying to entertain people and have fun,’ and to get that back from the audience is the biggest thrill you can get.” Speaking of thrills, Kunis said this is about as good as it gets, and she won’t even think about Oscar talk. “No. I could never even allow myself to think about [an Oscar nomination],” she said. “I wouldn’t know what to do. I am so not a part of this world. For me to be nominated in any awards show is such a shock. I come from such a small town in the Ukraine! It wasn’t like at the age of 9 I said this is where I’d be at 27. This is not where I thought I’d be. I never thought this would happen, let alone at 27!” Aronofsky and Kunis’ other partner in crime, Best Actress nominee Natalie Portman, released a statement after hearing the news: “I’m very honored by the HFPA nomination, and to be included in this group of actresses I so admire. The experience of filming ‘Black Swan’ with [director] Darren Aronofsky and our incredible crew is already the most fulfilling experience of my career. The audience appreciation of the film is only furthering how grateful and proud I am to be part of the film.” What do you think of the chances for “Black Swan” at the Golden Globes? Here is how the Wall Street Journal began its lead editorial, “Victory in Iraq,” on Aug. 20 — When the men and women of Fourth Brigade, Second Infantry Division deployed to Iraq in April 2007 as part of President Bush’s surge, American soldiers were being killed or wounded at a rate of about 750 a month, the country was falling into sectarian mayhem, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid had declared that the war was ‘lost.’ On Wednesday, the ‘Raiders’ became the last combat brigade to leave Iraq, having helped to defeat an insurgency, secure a democracy and uphold the honor of American arms. For viewers of NBC and MSNBC earlier that week, the title of Fourth Brigade, Second Infantry Division would likely have struck a chord — on Aug. 18, both networks interrupted their scheduled broadcasts with exclusive live coverage of the brigade crossing the border into Kuwait, the last US combat brigade to leave Iraq. The two networks’ coverage went far beyond that, however. NBC’s chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel, was embedded with the brigade as it left Iraq while MSNBC cable show host Rachel Maddow weighed in from Baghdad. Maddow remained in Iraq for the rest of the week, broadcasting four hours of her show from there, an hour more than usual. Yet through all that coverage, much of it focused on this specific combat brigade’s departure from Iraq, at no time did Maddow (nor any of her NBC/MSNBC colleagues appearing on her show) mention when the brigade went to Iraq — in April 2007, at the start of the much-maligned surge that was surely doomed to fail. Or so we were repeatedly told. Not that Maddow was obligated to mention the surge in her lede, as it were, as did the Wall Street Journal (on the opposite side of the political divide) in its editorial. But surely she could have cited it even once during her three days in Baghdad. Then there was Maddow’s arch retelling of recent Iraqi history (first part of embedded video) — The history of Iraq for the last generation is, Saddam taking power, a decade of the war with Iran, where we took Iraq’s side, then the first American war, then a decade of sanctions, then the second American war, toppling Saddam, presiding over a civil war, and now there’s us leaving. After all that, good luck! Hope it all works out for you guys! I was reminded of this specific Maddow revisionism while watching her show on Wednesday, when she began a segment claiming this (second part of video) — I am a crier. Some people cry at the sound of Harry Chapin’s ‘Cat’s in the Cradle,’ others at ‘Old Yeller’ or the end of ‘Where the Red Fern Grows’ where Billy visits his dogs’ graves. I cry at those things too. But the one surefire way to see tears streaming down these cheeks is a live rendition of our nation’s national anthem. It doesn’t matter if it’s a baseball game or an ad for a pickup truck or, God forbid, a busker on the subway, it’s just one of those things, some people like me are hard-wired to sob by the time the broad stripes and bright stars are so gallantly streaming. How noble indeed. More people might believe this if Maddow were not so willing to imply moral equivalence between the butchery of Saddam’s totalitarian regime and American efforts to thwart his lawlessness after Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990. At the end of her stint in Baghdad, Maddow reported from the home of a “working class, poor Shiite family” (third and final part of video) — … and they’ve agreed to talk with me a little bit about, you know, what everybody likes to talk about over dinner — politics, war and George Bush. … followed by Bush not coming up in the discussion, as can be seen in the segment in its entirety on Maddow’s MSNBC site. Here was an infrequent example of something on Maddow’s show that piqued my interest — what would a “working class, poor Shiite family” in Baghdad say about George W. Bush? One safely assumes from the fact Maddow is teasing this that the Iraqis will excoriate Bush. But if they did, it somehow didn’t make it into the segment that ran. Most likely scenario — Maddow said this before the interview when she intended to ask her Iraqi hosts about Bush, followed by her forgetting to do so and them not mentioning him. Another scenario that can’t be ruled out — any of the Iraqis praising Bush, thereby ensuring that such blasphemy would not be heard by Americans watching MSNBC.

SYDNEY (AFP) – Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd announced a shock ballot Wednesday to fight a challenge from his deputy Julia Gillard, raising the prospect of the country's first female head of government. Rudd, who has slumped in the polls as elections loom, emerged from marathon late-night talks with Gillard and other ministers to tell a hastily convened press conference the vote would be held early Thursday. “I was elected by the people of Australia as prime minister of Australia,” Rudd said. “I was elected to do a job, I intend to continue doing that job. I intend to continue doing it to the best of my ability.” Deputy Prime Minister Gillard confirmed she would be a candidate in the vote, which follows a dizzying turn of events for Rudd's government ahead of elections expected this year. “I confirm I will be a candidate in tomorrow's ballot,” Gillard told reporters in a brief statement. Rudd was in pugnacious mood as he faced journalists in Canberra and detailed his achievements in office since the landslide defeat of conservative prime minister John Howard in November 2007. The centre-left leader is facing down Labor Party factions who have become convinced he is a liability for the upcoming elections following a steep drop in personal support. “I was elected by the people of Australia to do a job. I was not elected by the factional leaders of the Australian Labor Party to do a job — but they may be seeking to do a job on me,” he said. Local media said Labor's factions have swung behind Gillard, who also gained the backing of the powerful Australian Workers' Union late Wednesday and is considered favourite in the vote. Rudd has consistently enjoyed strong popularity until recent months, but his support has suddenly fallen away after a series of missteps and a reinvigorated opposition under conservative leader Tony Abbott. The highly rated Gillard has been playing down prospects of a leadership challenge for several weeks after a poll showed her breathing down Rudd's neck as preferred party leader. “There's more chance of me becoming the full-forward for the Dogs (Western Bulldogs Australian Rules football team) than there is any chance of a change in the Labor Party,” she said last month. Rudd's support has crumbled since he shelved a flagship carbon-trading scheme and a free home-insulation scheme, and unveiled a 40 percent tax on the mining industry, which is heavily invested by shareholders and pension funds. The steep and unexpected fall has left the government in danger of becoming the first since before World War II not to secure a second term. Elections are expected later this year. Last week, top officials including Foreign Minister Stephen Smith were forced to scotch rumours of a leadership challenge. In recent days, the opposition targeted Rudd with attack ads portraying him as a cartoon lemon. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100623/ts_afp/australiapoliticsrudd_20100623145555 added by: Stoneyroad
