Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Warns Of The Cycle Of Abuse

Dating violence expert says clip’s ‘warning’ message is heightened by Eminem’s and Rihanna’s personal histories. By Rochell Thomas, with reporting by Adam Murphy Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/ WireImage In Eminem’s controversial new video “Love the Way You Lie,” love and violence intertwine seamlessly. One moment, a couple sleeps in each other’s arms, the next, they’re violently fighting, tossing bed sheets. Later, they kiss passionately, pressed up against the same wall the man has just punctured with his fist. All the while, Rihanna croons the chorus which includes the line, “That’s all right because I like the way it hurts.” But is it really all right? Less than 24 hours after MTV debuted the video for Eminem’s chart-topping single about the evolution of his relationship with his ex-wife, Kim, many are wondering: Does “Love the Way You Lie” glamorize domestic violence?

Uganda Anti-Gay Bill Stalls In Committee

The anti-gay legislation investigated in Vanguard's “Missionaries of Hate” is stalled in committee and, according to local gay activists in the country, unlikely to pass during this current parliamentary session. Correspondent Mariana van Zeller said she was taken aback by the fervor surrounding the anti-gay movement, especially at one of Pastor Ssempa’s inflammatory church rallies. “One of the shocking experiences that we had [in Uganda] was being in this congregation, with children, old women, and there he was with his laptop, showing these very graphic images of gay porn,” Mariana said. [Watch more commentary with Mariana.] “You could see the faces of the congregation. They were completely shocked. And this is what they are taking home with them.” Although religious leaders and politicians had managed to elevate the discourse to fever pitch earlier this year, local activists report that the general population of Uganda is more tolerant, and the government seems to be responding to international pressures that the bill be withdrawn from parliament. From the Global Post: “Politicians find that homosexuals are a great scapegoat or red herring to divert attention to more pressing issues … such as unemployment, corruption, poor health facilities, reform of electoral laws and so forth,” wrote Ugandan lawyer Sylvia Tamale, the first female dean of law at Makerere University law school. “If we are to be absolutely honest with ourselves, we should ask whether there are not more pressing issues of moral violation in other areas such as domestic violence, torture and corruption. None of these areas have specific laws outlawing their practice,” wrote Tamale. Rev. Mark Kiyimba of the Ugandan Unitarian Universalist Church, also known as “Pastor Brown,” is a leader in Uganda’s LGBT community. He says that international pressure, especially from the Obama administration, has “cooled down progress on the bill.” “We have shifted our focus and are now concentrating on HIV, spirituality and social issues,” said Kiyimba. “We don’t hear anything anymore about the bill. Besides, parliament will dissolve next month, so it is too late to debate the bill before the close of parliament.” Watch a clip from “Missionaries of Hate” in which Mariana and a

Just gonna stand there and watch me burn. But that’s alright because I love the way it hurts… Rihanna and Eminem already own the number-one song in the land. Now this power duo has come out with a hit video for the single “Love the Way You Lie.” And it stars Megan Fox ! What else could you ask for? Watch below and then read Rihanna’s take on the tune: Love the Way You Lie The song deals with domestic violence, something Rihanna says she and Eminem “have both experienced… on different sides.” She’s referring, of course, to Eminem’s problems with his ex-wife and her relationship with that monster Chris Brown . Adds the beautiful star: “It just was authentic. It was real. It was believable for us to do a record like that, but it was also something that needed to be done, and the way he did it was so clever. He pretty much just broke down the cycle of domestic violence, and it’s something that a lot people don’t have a lot of insight on.” What do you think of the video?

Eminem’s ‘Love The Way You Lie’ Video Premieres Thursday On MTV

Tune in before ‘Jersey Shore’ at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT to see Em and Rihanna’s fiery new clip. By Kara Warner Rihanna on the set of “Love the Way You Lie” Photo: Danny Mayer/ Eric Ford/ On Location Photos Hot on the heels of Eminem’s eight VMA nominations , it was announced Tuesday (August 3) that the highly anticipated video for his latest chart-topper, “Love the Way You Lie,” will premiere Thursday on MTV at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT before “Jersey Shore.” Directed by Joseph Kahn (who has worked with Lady Gaga, Gwen Stefani, 50 Cent and many other superstars), the video was recently filmed in L.A. and features Rihanna, who sings the hook, along with actors Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan. Despite the photos that leaked online last week of Fox and Monaghan happily locking lips , they play “a couple going through the extremes of an abusive relationship” — a sensitive subject matter for Em and Rihanna. “Joseph and I worked pretty closely together to make sure we got this right,” Eminem said in a press release. “Trying to make this tough subject work visually is a challenge. It was great to have Rihanna, Megan and Dominic on board for this. … They really brought it and made this video super-powerful.” Rihanna — whose very public assault at the hands of then-boyfriend Chris Brown made the topic especially sensitive for her — recently told “Access Hollywood” this was something she “needed” to do . “It’s something that, you know, [Eminem and I have] both experienced, you know, on different sides, different ends of the table,” she said. “It just was authentic. It was real. It was believable for us to do a record like that, but it was also something that needed to be done, and the way he did it was so clever. He pretty much just broke down the cycle of domestic violence, and it’s something that a lot people don’t have a lot of insight on, so this song is a really, really powerful song, and it touches a lot of people.” Judging by the intense, fiery photos that leaked from the video’s set , the clip looks to make a powerful statement and could be an early contender for next year’s Video Music Awards. At this year’s VMAs — which air live from Los Angeles on Sunday, September 12 — Eminem’s “Not Afraid” will try to fend off the competition for Video of the Year, as well as Best Male Video and Best Hip-Hop Video. Eminem is also nominated alongside Drake in the Best Hip-Hop Video category for his contribution to the MC’s cameo-filled “Forever.” Rihanna’s vid for “Rude Boy” is up for Best Editing. Don’t forget to tune in to MTV on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/ 6 p.m. PT for the premiere of Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie,” and check MTVNews.com for full coverage of the clip. Just When Mel Gibson’s Phone Calls Couldn’t Get Worse: A Fight About Hitting His Child [Audio]

We’ve heard Mel Gibson tell Oksana Grigorieva she “deserved” getting punched. Now, a fight about his daughter : “You hit me and you hit her, while she was in my hands.” Mel’s response: “You need a fucking kick up the ass.” More

Oksana Grigorieva: Don’t Blame the Victim, Mel!

Mel Gibson’s lawyers say Oksana Grigorieva has lied about her injuries and tampered with evidence regarding his alleged assault on the mother of his child. Now Oksana’s spokesperson claims she is the smear campaign victim. Stephen Jaffe says that “While Mr. Gibson’s camp has floated a variety of false claims to try to distract the public from the true facts at hand, it is telling that his camp has not once denied that it is Mr. Gibson’s voice on the published recordings.” Those being the Mel Gibson tapes . It’s true that the actor’s lawyers haven’t denied it’s him on the tapes, which paint him as a bona fide crazy man. They’ve suggested that the tapes may have been doctored by Oksana and his rants taken out of context – big difference. Both Oksana and Mel claim the other is slandering them . Jaffe then adds, “It is common in such cases for those who perpetrate domestic violence to vilify the victim of that domestic violence. One would hope that those who are close to Mr. Gibson would take a more constructive approach.” The spokesman’s response comes in part after reports surfaced last week intimating that Oksana’s injuries may have been self-inflicted – which she denies. The judge in their custody battle over eight-month-old Lucia is at least somewhat skeptical of the allegations, given the possible inconsistencies of the evidence and testimony from Mel’s wife, Robyn, that he never abused her in 28 years. However, other experts say her injuries are consistent with her story. “It is obvious not only from the photograph of Ms. Grigorieva, but from other evidence …that he struck her in the mouth and temple, that she sustained injuries as a result of his blows,” says a source close to the Gibson investigation. “The notion that her wounds were ‘self-inflicted’ is ridiculous and not credible. No legitimate, independent expert analyst could reasonably draw such a conclusion.” What do you think?

Oksana Grigorieva’s Lawyers To Take Mel Gibson To Court Today

Grigorieva’s lawyers will reportedly use tapes as evidence to get her full custody of daughter. By Gil Kaufman Oksana Grigorieva and Mel Gibson Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images The first of what will likely be multiple court dates pitting lawyers for aspiring model/singer Oksana Grigorieva against her ex, actor Mel Gibson, is slated to take place on Thursday morning (July 15) in Los Angeles. According to TMZ , Grigorieva’s lawyers will be in family court, where they will ask a judge to strip the “Lethal Weapon” actor of custody of their 8-month-old daughter, using the shocking series of expletive-laden tapes leaked to RadarOnline.com as evidence against Gibson . The now-infamous tapes find an unhinged Gibson allegedly ranting at Grigorieva, using foul language and racist and sexist slurs , threatening to burn down her house , threatening her life and seemingly admitting to assaulting her . Gibson’s spokesperson has offered a “no comment” on the tapes — though he has not denied that the voice heard on them is Gibson — and the actor has not yet made any public statement about their contents. According to unidentified sources, TMZ reported that Gibson’s lawyers plan to claim they have evidence that the tapes Grigorieva secretly recorded earlier this year have been tampered with and edited, which would make them inadmissible in court. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is in the midst of a domestic violence investigation of Gibson , based on allegations that he attacked Grigorieva earlier this year, knocking out two of her teeth. Gibson’s lawyers have reportedly denied that claim. The site also reported that the investigation includes a probe into Gibson for assault with a deadly weapon — Grigorieva allegedly told deputies that Gibson threatened her with a handgun at his Malibu estate — and child endangerment, after Grigorieva claimed that during a January 6 fight, Gibson punched her while she was holding their child. TMZ said that Sheriff’s Department officers would have to authenticate the recordings before they send the case to the District Attorney’s office, which will then have to decide if there’s enough evidence to charge the Oscar-winning actor in the case. Gibson’s lawyers will reportedly present “concrete forensic evidence” that the tapes have been tampered with, including proof that they’ve been edited. A lawyer for Grigorieva told the site that, “We are not aware of any presentation Gibson’s lawyers are making, but we are not surprised they would make such unfounded claims.”
