Donald Glover Calls Woodies Hosting Gig A ‘Ploy’ To Meet Odd Future

The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards air live tonight at midnight on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU. By MTV News staff Donald Glover Photo: mtvU Everybody wants a piece of Tyler the Creator and his Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All crew. From record execs to the cool kids on the block, people know a sure thing when they see it. In fact, the group is one of the main reasons Donald Glover signed on to host the mtvU Woodies , airing live on mtvU, MTV and MTV2 on Wednesday (March 16) at midnight from Austin, Texas’ South by Southwest Music and Film Festival. The girls, the music and the SXSW rituals of BBQ, booze and begging for deals? Not so much. “This whole thing is just a ploy for me to meet Odd Future Wolf Gang,” the “Community” star admitted of the performers. In addition to Odd Future, Wiz Khalifa, Sleigh Bells and Two Door Cinema Club will also perform at the Woodies . Matt & Kim, Lupe Fiasco, Dev, Chiddy Bang, Skylar Grey and MTV’s “My Life as Liz” star Liz Lee will present awards, and MNDR will serve as the house DJ. California’s Odd Future have blown up seemingly overnight with their blend of shocking rhymes and energetic stage shows. They recently graced the cover of music-trade magazine Billboard. In the interview, OFWGKTA frontman Tyler spoke about their rising buzz and the pressure to deliver on the expectations. “I could be a complete failure come June,” he told the magazine. ” Goblin could brick. Everyone could hate it. The hype could be over. I could be back to trying to fill out junior-college [applications] … But I don’t see that happening. I see Grammys.” The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU tonight at midnight ET/PT from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. ‘Community’ Star Donald Glover Tapped To Host 2011 Woodie Awards

The 2011 mtvU Woodie Awards will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU on March 16 at midnight. By James Montgomery Donald Glover Photo: Jordan Strauss/ Getty Images He’s already taken the community college world by storm, and now Donald Glover is looking to conquer the mtvU Woodie Awards as the show’s first-ever host. Glover, best known for his portrayal of a college student on NBC’s “Community,” has just been tapped to serve as master of ceremonies for the seventh-annual Woodies, which will air live on MTV, MTV2 and mtvU on Wednesday, March 16, at midnight, from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas. Glover seems the perfect man for the job. After all, the Woodies are the only awards show where the winners are determined by college students, and Glover is definitely psyched about the opportunity. “I’m really excited to be hosting the Woodies, (insert joke about award sounding like a penis),” he wrote in a statement. Glover is just the latest name to be announced for the 2011 Woodies, joining a list of performers — Wiz Khalifa, Odd Future, Sleigh Bells and more — and nominees (a list that includes everyone from Kanye West and Yelawolf to Mumford & Sons and the Arcade Fire ) that showcase not only the Woodies’ eclectic tastes, but those of its viewers, too. Late Night Highlights: The Daily Show’s John Oliver Reports on Arizona Shooting in Panda Pajamas

It felt a little strange to see Jon Stewart so uncharacteristically serious on Monday’s edition of The Daily Show , but he was reporting on the horrible Arizona shooting tragedy…with the help of a correspondent in adult pajamas. Elsewhere in late night, Donald Glover showed off his Tracy Morgan impression, David Letterman let Snooki promote her new book, Winona Ryder discussed her irrational fear of the internet, and Jay Leno did his best snake.

‘You’re Ruining Fuddruckers for Everyone!’: Community Recapped

For the last few weeks , I’ve been one of those reviewers bemoaning the fact that Community doesn’t have any stakes, relatable heroes or weight behind its story arcs. Much of season two has been very funny — not as funny as season one, admittedly, but still very funny — but not much has occurred that is likely to be remembered. Watching season two of Community has been like eating Cap’n Crunch for breakfast: Delightful, a little bit naughty and wholly unsatisfying in the long run. Which is why “Mixology Certification” was actually a welcome departure from the track of the season. It wasn’t funny, but it was certainly meaty.

Watch Spike Jonze’s Video for Arcade Fire’s ‘The Suburbs’

As legend has it — or Wikipedia — Spike Jonze was originally approached to direct the video for the Smashing Pumpkins hit “1979,” but he couldn’t because of other obligations at the time. The honor ended up going to future Little Miss Sunshine helmers Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton, and the pair created a Billy Corgan-approved portrait of teen ennui in the suburbs. 14 years later, it looks like Jonze finally got to direct his own version of “1979” — the kind with roving military squads and the wailing vocals of Arcade Fire lead singer Win Butler.

‘A World Without Dioramas’: Community Recapped

Community has gotten to the point where every critic on the Internet will bend over backward to give the show glowing praise. As Emily Nussbaum just wrote on Twitter, “I laughed at literally every line of that episode of Community . Exhaustingly excellent.” Well, that’s one way to put it. Another way would be to say that while funny, “Conspiracy Theories and Soft Defenses” was a pale imitation of an Arrested Development episode, with a B-story that might as well have been left to an online deleted scene. Annie might have had a gun, but Community fired some blanks last night.

Last Night on Community: ‘I Don’t Like Where That’s Going’

Uh-oh. Having been a major cheerleader for the first season of Community — and having done a Derek Jeter-like fist pump when NBC wisely renewed the under-watched comedy for a second season — my hopes were high for the season premiere. Maybe that was a mistake.

‘Spider-Man 4’ Timeline: From Tobey Maguire To Andrew Garfield

After numerous delays, ‘Spider-Man’ reboot finally has a director, star and release date. By Eric Ditzian Tobey Maguire in “Spider-Man 3” Photo: Columbia Pictures It took nearly six months, but the rebooted “Spider-Man” franchise has finally found in 26-year-old Andrew Garfield a web-weaving boy hero to replace Tobey Maguire. Six months, though, is nothing when seen in the context of the three-year-long failed process to launch a fourth Spidey flick after the third installment of the series debuted in 2007. Those efforts finally imploded in January when a franchise reboot was announced, and what followed was a furious series of rumors and signings that kept comic-book fans glued to their computer monitors. With Garfield now the official owner of Peter Parker’s tights, let’s look back and recall just what happened to “Spider-Man 4” in 2010. January 11: After numerous production delays, word breaks that Sony has scrapped plans to make “Spider-Man 4” after battles with director Sam Raimi over script issues and the film’s summer 2012 release date. Sony announces plans to reboot the entire franchise with a new director and a largely new cast, which means that Maguire will be replaced as well. January 14: The first crop of new-director rumors surfaces: Marc Webb (“500 Days of Summer”), James Cameron (“Avatar”), David Fincher (“Zodiac”) and Wes Anderson (“Rushmore”). January 19: Those four names were quickly whittled down to one as Webb signs on to direct the reboot. In a statement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, say, “At its core, ‘Spider-Man’ is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker’s life.” February 4: While many possible replacement candidates for Maguire have been mentioned in the blogosphere, the first bit of concrete news comes when Logan Lerman , star of “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” announces that he’s been talking to Sony about the role. February 10: The new “Spider-Man” gets a release date — July 3, 2012 — and an unsurprising third dimension: It will be shot in 3-D. May 17: Alvin Sargent (“Spider-Man 3”) signs on to rewrite the “Spider-Man” reboot, reportedly working from the previous draft by Jamie Vanderbilt (“Zodiac”). May 26: The Peter Parker candidates are rumored to be down to five actors: Jamie Bell (“Jumper”), Alden Ehrenreich (“Somewhere”), Frank Dillane (“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince”), Josh Hutcherson (“Cirque du Freak”) and Andrew Garfield (“The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus”). June 1: A grassroots campaign to add “Community” co-star Donald Glover to the list of possible Peter Parkers explodes on Twitter and Facebook. July 1: Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new Spider-Man: Mr. Andrew Garfield !
