Who is the Richest Man in Hip-Hop?

Jay-Z, Diddy and 50 Cent released “I Get Money (The Forbes 1-2-3 Billionaire Remix)” in ’07, a celebration of their inclusion atop Forbes Hip-Hop Cash Kings list. Five years later, the same three artists are in a more exclusive group – the Forbes Five, a list of hip-hop’s wealthiest moguls – though no longer 1-2-3 in that order. Which of the three earns the most? And who else made the Top 5? Diddy is the closest to becoming a billionaire, with a net worth of $550 million . The Bad Boy Records founder has been a mainstream mainstay for 15 years. Thanks to his knack for self-promotion and outside business deals with Ciroc vodka, Sean John, Enyce, Blue Flame and other tech startups, he gets money. A lot of it. And he’s not even done. Diddy signed a deal with Comcast to launch cable channel Revolt in 2013. He’ll own the channel outright. Cha-ching. Jay-Z is #2 at $460 million . Unlike his fellow Forbes Five members, he still churns out music and goes on tour, most recently with pal Kanye West. He sold his Rocawear clothing label for $204 million in 2007, signed a 10-year $150M deal with Live Nation in 2008, and co-owns the New Jersey Nets. There’s also his 40/40 Club chain, his ad firm Translation, cosmetics company Carol’s Daughter and other businesses too numerous to list. Very rich. Dr. Dre ranks third with $270 million , boosted by the sale of a 51% stake in Beats Electronics – a company he founded with Jimmy Iovine – to HTC. Sources say each owned a third of the company before the deal, placing Dre’s cut at $85 million after taxes. Not a bad addition to his net worth. Birdman , surprisingly clocks in at No. 4 with a fortune of $125 million . He cofounded Cash Money Records with brother Ronald “Slim” Williams. The label’s value soared with the success of rappers Drake, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne (who shares ownership of sub-label Young Money). That’ll do it. 50 Cent and his $110 million rank fifth. The business-savvy Queens-born rapper earned $100 million for his Vitaminwater stake alone in 2007. Fiddy also made tens of millions from touring, record sales and clothing, but spends freely on cars and renovations to his mansion in Connecticut. Still, a nice nine-figure cushion remains from his back catalog, acting gigs and 50 Cent themed videogames, shoes and books, and headphone line SMS. [Photo: WENN.com]

Would You Go See the Tupac Hologram on Tour?

According to reports, Tupac’s hologram performance at Coachella has Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre thinking of taking the late rapper’s CGI likeness with them on tour. Tupac died back in 1996 (well, according to some people ), but he was introduced to a whole new generation of fans thanks to the wizards at Digital Domain. The Hollywood firm created a CGI version of the rapper performing on “Hail Mary” and “2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted” at the Coachella Festival this weekend: Tupac Coachella Performance Using angled reflectors to create the illusion that he was actually alive and on stage, video of the stunt hit the Internet and became a viral sensation Monday. It also looked like Tupac’s been busy at the gym in the afterlife. Anyway, old 2Pac friends and collaborators Dre and Snoop told the Wall Street Journal that the two are considering mounting an arena tour – with digi-Pac. “This is just the beginning,” Digital Domain’s chief creative officer, Ed Ulbrich, told the paper. “Dre has a massive vision for this.” That got us thinking … Talk to THG: If the Tupac Shakur hologram performed at a venue in your hometown, would you pay to go see that crazy mofo? And more importantly, is Tupac even dead?

In the Trayvon Martin Aftermath, How Soon Is Too Soon for Neighborhood Watch?

High five to Fox for pulling their bullet-ridden Neighborhood Watch marketing materials from Florida theaters this week following the February killing of Trayvon Martin. Trying to get as much distance as possible from the teaser’s emphasis on grown men Ben Stiller , Vince Vaughn , Jonah Hill , and Richard Ayoade stalking and finger-shooting suburban kids is a good idea and a sensitive move — not to mention a no-brainer necessity, PR-wise — so the studio’s forthcoming campaign will likely focus on the film’s “broad alien-invasion comedy” elements. But even four months from now, will it be too soon for Neighborhood Watch to make fun escapism out of vigilante violence? A Fox representative explained the studio’s decision to THR : “We are very sensitive to the Trayvon Martin case, but our film is a broad alien-invasion comedy and bears absolutely no relation to the tragic events in Florida,” a Fox spokesperson tells THR. “The movie, which is not scheduled for release for several months, was made and these initial marketing materials were released before this incident ever came to light. The teaser materials were part of an early phase of our marketing and were never planned for long-term use. Above all else, our thoughts go out to the families touched by this terrible event.” Extending that retraction on a wider scale might even be in order, seeing as the media firestorm over Martin and his shooter, George Zimmerman, is now a national conversation and not just one for Floridians. Which brings us to the big question: Is the Trayvon Martin case too big, too incendiary, or just too heartbreaking for Neighborhood Watch to come out as planned, and perform well, in four months’ time? What’s in the teaser trailer may be an indication of the problem here: Whether or not it’s revealed in marketing materials, the film seems to glorify the kind of volunteer policing that Martin shooter Zimmerman was a part of in real life. The sounds of Dr. Dre’s “Still D.R.E.” underscore the comically grandiose slow-motion crawl of the Neighborhood Watch gang — they’re lazy suburbanites using a self-important Neighborhood Watch front to get away from their families, but once the aliens invade they’ll become true-blue heroes. (Since I haven’t seen the film, I’m only guessing here — maybe it’ll turn out that the aliens were only visiting peaceably, their presence horribly misunderstood by overzealous would-be heroes, who resolve their differences with nonviolence.) That setup would be fairly harmless if it didn’t tap directly into the debate over what really happened on February 26 in Sanford, FL. Zimmerman was an active Neighborhood Watch captain in his gated community who, by many accounts, took citizen policing very seriously; following Martin as a suspicious person on the day of the incident led to the unarmed 17-year-old’s fatal shooting, which Zimmerman claimed was an act of self-defense. Neighborhood Watch , penned by Seth Rogen , Evan Goldberg, and Jared Stern as a ” hard R ” and directed by Lonely Island ‘s Akiva Schaffer, is still on Fox’s schedule for a July 27 wide release. According to the THR report, the studio doesn’t plan on pushing back the debut, despite the ongoing furor over the Martin case. I’d like to think that Martin’s death will be resolved but not forgotten by then, if only to give his family and all who’ve become invested in the case some closure, but I’m skeptical that four months — or five, or a year, or any measure of time — will be long enough that I won’t be thinking of George Zimmerman while watching Ben Stiller blow away the aliens who darken his doorstep.
