The formidable creative team behind the new adaptation of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo reconvened today in New York, where director David Fincher, screenwriter Steven Zaillian, and stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer and Stellan Skarsgård talked things over with a few dozen members of the press. Movieline was there to capture a range of revealing back stories, true confessions and amusing — if slightly harrowing — anecdotes from the shoot. Read on for the full report.
‘Babysitters are going to get, hopefully, a lot of money out of this film,’ Craig says, predicting the mature set will flock to theaters. By Amy Wilkinson Daniel Craig Photo: MTV News Rape, murder, intrigue … the feel-bad movie of Christmas may not leave audiences feeling bright and merry but “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” star Daniel Craig suspects the dark drama will inspire smiles among at least one group. “Look, I’m a David Fincher fan, so it was an easy choice to make when accepting this film,” Craig told MTV News at the film’s New York City premiere. “It’s a great story. It’s an adult movie. The babysitters are going to get, hopefully, a lot of money out of this film. That’s why I wanted to get involved.” The film, based on the novel by late Swedish author Stieg Larsson, follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) as he tries to solve the 30-year-old murder of teen Harriet Vanger, with the help of asocial hacker punk Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara). Mara has been earning raves for her performance as the damaged heroine and even netted a Golden Globe nomination on Thursday. Craig said he had no doubts as to the newcomer’s abilities. “We all knew she was good. She’s just committed as an actress, and she made all of the right choices with David’s help and everyone else’s help,” he said. “She’s just blossomed as somebody. As I said, we knew from the beginning that she was good enough — it was everyone else who had the problem.” Best known for her work in Fincher’s “The Social Network,” Mara returned the compliment, expressing gratitude for Craig’s help and guidance on set. “Daniel is an incredible actor, and I don’t think we’ve seen him in a role like this before, and he’s brilliant,” she said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better person to sort of have my coming out. He was very patient and generous with me.” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” opens December 20, a day earlier than its initial release date. Her parents aren’t invited . Us Weekly makes this stunning declaration on the cover of its new issue, which features an older photo of a happy Prince William and Kate Middleton on the cover. The gist of the non-story: The Duchess will spend her very first Christmas weekend with her husband and the entire royal family at Queen Elizabeth’s retreat. Her parents have not been invited. Scandalous, right? Not really, as William will visit with Kate, Pippa Middleton and their parents before and after Christmas. Kate Middleton pregnancy rumors take a back seat … for one week! The princess will “quickly learn that this is not like any Christmas she has had,” a royal source says , but is that any different from any newly-married woman or man? In-laws. Can’t live with ’em, pass the egg nog. There are some challenges unique to Kate Middleton, however. The fashion icon is expected to change up to five times a day for formal meals, black-tie cocktail parties, church services and gift exchanges (novelty presents are encouraged). She also has to hide her baby bump. Just kidding. You didn’t think we could go a whole article without a reference to the ongoing Kate Middleton pregnancy rumors , did you? We should hope not.
Technically and stylistically, David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo should thrill fans of the Stieg Larsson book trilogy and newcomers alike. Simply put, the director’s dark vision and aesthetic brilliance make for a movie marvel. Casting, of course, plays a huge role in the film’s success, especially when the subject has already been tackled successfully by Swedish filmmakers with Noomi Rapace as the lead. In the U.S. version, Rooney Mara is scary good as Lisbeth Salander. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Trailer (Extended) Mara’s bravado is explosive and the actress deserves serious consideration for an Academy Award nomination. Throughout The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo , it is difficult to take one’s eyes off of Mara, no matter how much takes place around her. Daniel Craig is also outstanding as the co-protagonist, a journalist recently disgraced for libel. Movie hits half-billion mark in less than two weeks. By Gil Kaufman Photo: Summit “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1” looks to dominate the box office for a good long time. After two weeks atop the list of top-grossing movies, the penultimate film in the vampires and werewolves epic has already raked in more than $508 million worldwide. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the movie is the ninth film this year to push past the half-billion mark globally, hitting the mark in just 12 days of release. So far, the movie has grossed $223.4 million in North America and $285 million internationally, for a grand total of $508.4 million. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the success of this film and a franchise that the fans have continued to support over the past several years,” said Summit Entertainment co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger in a statement. “Thank you to all involved with the films from the actors, filmmakers and Stephenie Meyer to the most important group of all, the global fan base that continues to drive a desire for more Edward, Jacob and Bella.” MTV News asked experts how long this domination can go on, especially since the only competition this weekend is the NC-17-rated full-frontal indie flick “Shame.” “It’ll be close between [‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’] and ‘The Muppets,’ because [‘The Muppets’] has much better word of mouth,” said Boxoffice.com’s Phil Contrino, noting that it was too soon to say which would come out on top. He also predicted that the movie should finish its domestic run in the $300 million range and stay near the top until such holiday blockbusters as “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Mission Impossible — Ghost Protocol” on December 21. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” is scheduled to hit U.S. theaters on November 16, 2012. ‘Twilight’ flick blew past ‘The Muppets,’ but faces formidable holiday-movie competition in the coming weeks. By Kevin P. Sullivan Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in “Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” Photo: Summit Entertainment The box-office battle of Thanksgiving weekend has come and gone, and “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” once again emerged as the victor. The penultimate entry in the vampire romance series pulled off an impressive haul of an estimated $62.3 million, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com . The weekend brought the film’s domestic total to roughly $221 million, and survived formidable competition from “The Muppets,” which earned a respectable $42 million. But what do the upcoming weeks hold for “Breaking Dawn – Part 1”? We consulted some box-office experts to find out. One of the biggest questions right now for “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” is whether it will continue to dominate the box office for a third week in a row. With only “Shame” — a small indie film by comparison — opening next week, the stage is set for another rematch between “Breaking Dawn” and “The Muppets.” Phil Contrino from Boxoffice.com said there is some potential for growth in the case of “The Muppets.” “It’ll be close between [‘Breaking Dawn – Part 1’] and ‘The Muppets,’ because [‘The Muppets’] has much better word of mouth,” he said, but he indicated that it was too soon to say which would come out on top. Jeff Bock of Exhibitor Relations , on the other hand, sees the weekend going to “The Muppets.” The fight for second place will be between “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” and “Hugo,” he said. ” ‘Breaking Dawn’ is performing almost identically to ‘New Moon’ and will likely dip another 60 to 65 percent next weekend and gross $14 million to 16 million,” Bock said. “That probably won’t keep it at #1, as family films hold exceptionally well during the holiday season. That means ‘The Muppets’ will jump to #1, and depending on how many screens ‘Hugo’ jumps to, it may be in a fight for second place.” Both Bock and Contrino expect “Breaking Dawn – Part 1” to finish its domestic run in the range of $300 million but say that we should expect a steep drop-off once more holiday films like “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” hit theaters. “It’s still going to fall fast,” Contrino said. “By the time ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ and ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ hit, the audience will have almost entirely disappeared.” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
