Rooney Mara Lands Lead In ‘Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’

The new Lisbeth Salander also stars in David Fincher’s upcoming ‘Social Network.’ By Eric Ditzian Rooney Mara Photo: Merrick Morton The search for Lisbeth Salander is over. Rooney Mara (“A Nightmare on Elm Street”) has been cast as the motorcycle-driving computer hacker in “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” David Fincher’s upcoming adaptation of the best-selling Swedish crime thriller, according to a Sony press release. Mara nabbed the highly sought-after role following an exhaustive search said to include names like Natalie Portman, Kristen Stewart, Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page and Mia Wasikowska. Late last month, Mara, who stars in Fincher’s “Social Network,” was reportedly contending with four other actresses for the part. Now, Salander officially belongs to Mara. She’ll be joined by Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist , the disgraced journalist who is hired to investigate a decades-old missing-persons case and convinces Salander to assist the search. Based on the first of Salander Larsson’s three “Millennium” novels, the film will reportedly co-star Robin Wright as Erika Berger (Blomkvist’s business partner and occasional lover) and Stellan Skarsg

Natalie Portman Probably Won’t Be The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

And neither will Ellen Page, Emma Watson or Carey Mulligan . Page Six reports that director David Fincher is dead-set on hiring an unknown to play Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo . That means it’s down to the same list of usual suspects that it was in July (Rooney Mara, Léa Seydoux, Sophie Lowe and Sarah Snook). The only bit of actual news here: Fincher will likely have to make a decision on casting before Labor Day. Hold your breath! [ Page Six via Vulture ]

Awesome Bookmaker Says Natalie Portman is Odds-On Favorite for Dragon Tattoo

Bring your rabbit’s foot (and a robust grain of salt) and meet me after the jump.

REVIEW: Girl Who Played with Fire Goes Through the Tiresome Swede-Goth Motions

The novels of the late Stieg Larsson are the little Saabs that could: These three posthumously published thrillers — The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest — might have been nothing more than an entertaining genre-fiction exercise, the sort of thing that might, at best, achieve some sort of cult status. Instead, they’ve become the books that everyone and their grandmothers seem to be reading, and the Swedish movie based on the first book in the series, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, directed by Niels Arden Oplev, became a surprise U.S. hit last year. Hollywood is, of course, preparing its own David Fincher-directed version, but those of us who are allegedly in the know are supposed to automatically prefer the Swedish version, with its dour approach to torture and violence and its efficient “He did it because he’s crazy, that’s why” wrap-up. Because the movie is long, colorless, uncompromising and, well, Swedish, it’s got to be better than any future American version, right?

Kristen Stewart Holds Out Hope For ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’

‘I’m booked for, like, the next six months, but it’s an incredible project,’ actress says at ‘Eclipse’ premiere. By Adam Rosenberg, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Plans for a Hollywood-produced adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s book “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and its two “Millennium Trilogy” follow-ups — “The Girl Who Played With Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest” — have been ramping up lately. Producer Scott Rudin and filmmaker David Fincher are in pre-production for the first movie now and expected to wrap up the casting soon. One of the names mentioned as a contender for the lead role of Lisbeth Salander is “Twilight” star Kristen Stewart. When MTV News spoke to Stewart about “Dragon Tattoo” at Thursday night’s red-carpet premiere of “Eclipse,” she sounded as unsure as anyone else about who would star in the movie. But her own schedule might prevent her from taking on the role of the diminutive-but-tough-as-nails punk computer hacker. “I think I’m going to be working,” Stewart said. “I’m booked for, like, the next six months, but it’s an incredible project. I hope someone really cool does it, because I can’t wait to see it. But I don’t know if it’s going to be me.” Stewart said she hasn’t even met with Fincher. “I’m working, and he’s really busy,” she said. Stewart’s a realist though; she’s been in Hollywood for long enough to understand that things can change, anything can happen. “Who knows? Movies push all the time.” Carey Mulligan, Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman have also expressed interest in starring in the adaptation of the Swedish thriller. According to TheWrap.com , Daniel Craig is in talks to star as Mikael Blomkvist, a journalist who’s hired to find a woman who has been missing for 40 years. “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” has already been the subject of an adaptation from Danish director Niels Arden Oplev. The critically acclaimed movie opened in Denmark and Sweden in February 2009 and was released in the United States earlier this year. ‘Iron Man 2’ Soars Past ‘Robin Hood’ At The Box Office

Superhero sequel holds first place despite competition from Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe. By Josh Wigler Robert Downey Jr. in “Iron Man 2” Photo: Paramount Pictures The Box-Office Top Five #1 “Iron Man 2” ($53 million) #2 “Robin Hood” ($37.1 million) #3 “Letters to Juliet” ($13.8 million) #4 “Just Wright” ($8.5 million) #5 “How to Train Your Dragon” ($5.1 million) “Iron Man 2” held on to the top of the box-office charts for the second weekend in a row despite elevated competition from a slew of new releases, including Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood.” Although the Marvel Studios superhero sequel earned a victorious $53 million from Friday through Sunday, it still suffered a steep 59 percent plunge from its $128.1 million opening weekend. Even with such a sharp decline, “Iron Man 2” already ranks as the second-highest-grossing release of 2010, behind Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland.” Additionally, the movie has grossed an impressive $428.2 million worldwide total after only three weeks in theaters. Director Ridley Scott and actor Russell Crowe returned to their “Gladiator” roots with “Robin Hood” this weekend. The medieval epic came in second place with $37.1 million at the domestic box office and an additional $74 million from foreign showings, resulting in a $111.1 million global total. But with a hefty $200 million production budget and surefire hits such as “Sex and the City 2” and “Shrek Forever After” arriving over the next few weeks, “Robin Hood” faces a challenging road in its quest to cross the profit line. The weekend’s other major new releases, “Letters to Juliet” and “Just Wright,” landed in third and fourth place with $13.8 million and $8.5 million respectively. “Letters” failed to match the success of leading lady Amanda Seyfried’s previous romantic hit, “Dear John.” Fifth place belonged to the continually successful “How to Train Your Dragon” with $5.1 million. Horror remake “A Nightmare on Elm Street” fell to sixth place with $4.7 million. Upcoming Releases Moviegoers can return to the kingdom of Far Far Away next weekend as “Shrek Forever After” enters the box-office arena. The DreamWorks family film goes up against Universal’s “MacGruber,” based on the Will Forte-starring “Saturday Night Live” sketch.
