Is the U.S. Government Spying on a Tiny Secret-Sharing Website? [Espionage]

Wikileaks.org is a website legendary in certain circles for posting documents people want hidden from the world. The Pentagon is not a fan. Now, Wikileaks is accusing the U.S. of spying on its editors. Tonight, Wikileaks tweeted that it was “currently under an aggressive US and Icelandic surveillance operation,” and provided a few creepy details: These might sound like the paranoid rantings of an Internet nutjob, but coming from Wikileaks we are inclined to the believe them: In 2008, the Pentagon commissioned a report on the site, which found that “‘WikiLeaks.org represents a potential force protection, counterintelligence, OPSEC and INFOSEC threat to the U.S. Army’ – or, in plain English, a threat to Army operations and information,” according to the Times . (Wikileaks posted the report to its site last week.) Wikileaks, which is run by a 9-person advisory board, has built a reputation based on its impressive record of posting secret documents like the ones that threaten the U.S. Army. These include emails hacked from Sarah Palin’s private account, 570,000 pager messages from 9/11 and the infamous climate change scientist emails. They have also posted sensitive U.S. military documents—most prominently the standard operating procedures for Guantanamo Bay. Judging from their tweets, Wikileaks believes the surveillance is related to an upcoming presentation where they will show unencrypted footage of a May 7 U.S. airstrike in Afghanistan which killed 97 civilians: The Pentagon had originally planned to show the video as proof that it had conducted the operation appropriately, despite having used airbursting bombs with civilians in the area. They later back-pedaled , likely because video was actually more incriminating than they first believed. Wikileaks obtained a copy of the encrypted video, and in January they tweeted “Have encrypted videos of US bomb strikes on civilians… we need super computer time.” They must have got that super computer time, and now U.S. authorities may be acting positively Chinese. Secret-sharing websites like Wikileaks have proven adept at dealing with legal challenges: When Cryptone.org was shut down by Microsoft earlier this year a mirror site was up within hours. But pissing off the government regarding national security matters is a whole other level. If anything happens to Wikileaks, you know who is responsible. (If you’re wondering what the editors were doing in Iceland: Wikileaks is currently helping draft legislation that would make the country a safe haven for investigative journalists. Ha!)

Russian Newsweek EIC Loves Hookers, Blow [Drugs]

Just like angry former expat Matt Taibbi , the editor-in-chief of the Russian edition of Newsweek , Mikhail Fishman , likes to party the Moscow way. But it may all be a set up by the Kremlin. Or maybe not. Who knows? The Daily Beast’s Michael Idov recaps the titillating story that involves cops, political activists, models/prostitutes, sex and drugs. Says opposition activist Ilya Yashin: One night she called me up and asked me to come to her apartment right away. She said she had a surprise for me. The surprise was Nastya, and both of them dragged me into bed as soon as I came through the door. I’d be lying if I said I resisted. Everything was fine until Katya produced a whole pile of sex toys: dildos, whips, handcuffs, ball gags.” Is having a little fun with some pretty ladies and some party drugs such a bad thing? Not everyone thinks so: Let me get this straight,” wrote Ilya Krasilschik, the editor of Afisha magazine, commenting on a Facebook status update after the scandal broke and summing up much of the popular sentiment. “You fight the regime, and in exchange the regime brings you free chicks and blow? Duly noted.” Noted, indeed! The video, in Russian, shows Fishman chopping up a mysterious powder next to a half-naked woman. It gets good at 3:37, maybe NSFW: [ Image via ]

Vicodin, Valium Found at Site of Corey Haim Death

Four pill bottles found in the apartment where Corey Haim died yesterday morning, medications that included the generic versions of both Vicodin and Valium. The same doctor prescribed all four drugs just days before Haim died. The drugs provided by a prominent L.A. psychiatrist were hydrocodone (Vicodin), diazepam (Valium), haloperidol (anti-psychotic) and Soma (muscle relaxant). The L.A. County Coroner’s Office would not comment, but sources say all were prescribed the same day , days before Haim died of an apparent drug overdose. No word on how many (if any) pills were missing from the bottles, which has become a topic of debate in the eerily similar Brittany Murphy death investigation. Corey Haim (1971-2010). Law enforcement sources say they believe Haim died from an accidental overdose of meds, though nothing is final until the Coroner’s toxicology reports are in. There have been reports that Haim, who fought a long battle with substance abuse, admitted in the past to taking as many as 85 Valium pills in a single day. Haim, a 38-year-old former child star, collapsed in his mother’s apartment and was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead 2 1/2 hours later. The actor had been dating Daisy de la Hoya , a fellow reality star, in the week’s leading up to his passing. She is understandably quite broken up about it.

Corey Haim’s MTV Interviews Through The Years

MTV first caught up with the late ‘Lost Boys’ star in 1987. By Eric Ditzian Corey Haim in 1987 Photo: MTV News From Corey Haim’s teenage years as a Hollywood heartthrob to his attempts at a comeback, MTV News has followed the actor’s career and sat down for several on-cameras interview with him. After Haim’s death Wednesday morning from an apparent drug overdose, we went back into our archives to pull out some compelling moments over the last two decades. In 1987, fresh off the success of “Lucas,” in which he played a painfully awkward teen who decides to join the football team to impress a cheerleader he’s fallen for, Haim sat down with MTV to promote the vampire drama “The Lost Boys.” In the midst of a wide-ranging discussion alongside co-star Jason Patric, Haim talked about the evolution of his career. ” ‘Lucas,’ everybody was like, ‘Aw, he’s so cute. He’s such a little nerdy kind of guy,” he said. “With ‘Silver Bullet’ I was in a [wheel]chair. In ‘A Time to Live,” I had muscular dystrophy. I portrayed a kid who was dying. His mom was freaking out. This is pretty much my first chance to say, ‘Hey, he’s a dude. Gnarly!’ ” The next year, we caught up with Haim again, this time quite unexpectedly during an interview with his friend and frequent co-star Corey Feldman . The two threw their arms around each other, messed around and took nothing too seriously — even a discussion of Feldman’s legal battle to become emancipated from his parents. “We’re best friends and we have the same name, so it’s very easy,” Feldman said. “And the same style of dressing!” Haim added. The duo would go on to star in films like, “Dream a Little Dream,” “License to Drive” and “Blown Away.” But when we caught up with Haim almost two decades later, while he promoted his comeback reality series with Feldman called “The Two Coreys,” we encountered quite a different person. He’d battled substance abuse for years and had checked into treatment centers too many times to count, but maintained he’d finally gotten sober. “Everyone asks me, ‘Would you change anything, Corey Haim , from your past because of the drugs?’ ” he told us. “No, except maybe the emotional hurt I put on my family and friends. But no, I wouldn’t change anything.” Just a few years later, though, Haim died at the age of 38. “This is a tragic loss of a wonderful, beautiful, tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family, and best friend,” Feldman said in a statement released Wednesday. Corey Haim Said He ‘Wouldn’t Change Anything’ About His Past

‘Then I wouldn’t have experiences like this. I wouldn’t know what I know,’ actor explained in a 2007 interview. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Corey Haim Photo: MTV News Corey Haim’s career as an ’80s movie idol and teen magazine staple was undone by his well-documented drug abuse with substances including alcohol, crack and prescription medication. Yet in a 2007 interview with MTV News, nearly three years before his death Wednesday (March 10) from an apparent drug overdose, Haim was adamant that he wouldn’t change anything about his past even if he could. “Everyone asks me, ‘Would you change anything, Corey Haim, from your past because of the drugs?’ ” he said. “No, except maybe the emotional hurt I put on my family and friends. But no, I wouldn’t change anything.” Haim went from one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, based on roles in “Lucas,” “The Lost Boys” and other films, to an out-of-work actor. But in 2007, Haim said he couldn’t imagine his life — at the time he was promoting his comeback reality show, “The Two Coreys,” for A&E — without those struggles with addiction. “Because then I wouldn’t have experiences like this,” he explained. “I wouldn’t know what I know. Thank God I’m still alive for some reason. I mean that. I wouldn’t be here talking to you right now. I don’t know where I’d be.” The actor blamed his great financial success in his teenage years for his downfall. “When you’re young and have money, you become the CEO of life,” he said. At age 35, however, he said he’d learned from his mistakes, and several times during the interview repeated a 12-step-style mantra about taking one day at a time. “Knock wood, [I feel] wonderful,” he said. “Right now, I’m in the best shape of my life. I’m 35 years old, I’m happy. Thank God my family’s healthy.” Related Videos Remembering Corey Haim MTV Rough Cut: Corey Haim ‘Lost Boys: The Tribe’: Exclusive Trailer And Details Related Photos Corey Haim: A Life In Photos

RIP Motherfucker the Corey Haim Edition of the Day

Corey Haim’s dead. He’s had a lot of issues over the last 20 years and I’m actually surprised he’s lived this long, but that doesn’t make it not a sad situation, if anything it makes his entire life a sad situation and this was unfortunately expected…..He had an overdose and that’s just what happens when a motherfucker does drugs for so fucking long. It’s really just a fucking waste. The only Corey Haim story I have was from 10 years ago, when he was really rock bottom, and living back in Montreal in a one room apartment that his mom paid for. It was before the whole “Two Coreys” show tried to revive his career / give him enough money to do all the drugs he wanted….My friend happened to live across the hall from him, and he’d come over at all hours of the night knocking, looking for cigarettes, he’d even go so far as to fish through my friend’s ashtray and role a cigarette from a bunch of half smoked cigarette…and my friend would get a kick out of the fact a teen actor from Lost Boys was cracked out on his couch rolling homeless man cigarettes until the novelty wore off and he had to stop answering Haim’s requests…. Crack takes over your fucking life forever and an addiction this deep and sick, selfish and like diamond is forever…a serious horrible thing that ruins lives and I guess so is Hollywood…. My thoughts seriously go out to his family who I am sure have aged and been struggling with this for so many years…watching someone slowly kill themselves is sad, and so is death whether it put a sick person out of his misery, or whether it is expected or not. RIP Motherfucker.
