Travis Barker Says Solo Album Helped Turn Tragedies ‘Into Strengths’

Give the Drummer Some, his long-in-the-works solo album, is finally due March 15. By James Montgomery, with reporting by Sway Calloway Travis Barker Photo: MTV News NORTH HOLLYWOOD, California — It’s not exactly breaking news to say that Travis Barker has been working on his solo album for a while now ( at least two years , by our count), nor is it much of a stretch to say that, in the time he’s been working on it, a lot has happened in his life, both good and really, really bad. From the plane crash that took the life of longtime friends “Lil'” Chris Baker and Charles “Che” Still in 2008 to the death of collaborator Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein the following year, Barker has been forced to endure more than his fair share of hardships along the way, but through it all, he’s maintained focus on just one goal: finishing that album. And, at long last, he has. On March 15, his Give the Drummer Some album will finally see the light of day, and when MTV News paid Barker a visit in his NoHo studio, he was definitely in the mood to celebrate — in his own, understated way. “It’s a big accomplishment for me,” he told MTV News. “It’s something that’s been in the making for a couple years now, and there’s been lots of bumps in the road along the way.” And, in a lot of ways, the album — which features head-whirling contributions by everyone from Tom Morello, Raekwon and the RZA (on the track “Carry It” ) to the Transplants and Slash (on “Saturday Night”), not to mention Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Game and Swizz Beatz on the proper first single, “Can a Drummer Get Some?” — helped him overcome the loss of his close friends and saved his life too. “I had to transfer those [tragedies] into strengths and just push through,” Barker said. “Once I started coming in here, little by little, making my way into the studio, and I could actually make music again, and I was able to think, be in the studio environment, be productive, that was a big accomplishment, and, you know, from getting out of the hospital and learning how to walk and survive without being on 20 medications and stuff … I never envisioned it being OK again. So it was a big thing for me, and knocking this album out was the number-one priority on my list.” Which is why, when he talks about the album, he does so in relatively hushed tones. It’s been a long voyage getting to this point, but finally, Barker has made it. And he definitely considers himself blessed to have done so. “Everyone on the album is someone I was blessed to come in contact at one point or another in my life,” he said. “That’s a pretty good way to describe how I feel about it too.” What are you expecting from Travis Barker’s album? Movieline Guesses the Future for Every Member of The A-List: New York

I asked the same question again and again during The A-List: New York ‘s reunion last night: Why are we reuniting? After a season of dropped storylines and manufactured tiffs, we were left with pretty much nothing to talk about. Austin’s engaged to somebody off-camera, Reichen and Rodiney are together- ish , and Derek is a squirrel. What else is there to discuss? Host (and weave sorceress) Wendy Williams tried hard to dredge up some vitriol, but even she couldn’t make this non-drama dramatic. Without further ado, let’s settle this season by predicting each cast member’s future. It can’t be that hard.

Travis Barker And Fat Joe Freestyle On MTV’s ‘RapFix Live’

The Blink-182 drummer teams up with Joey Crack for an impromptu session. By Mawuse Ziegbe, with reporting by Sway Calloway Travis Barker and Fat Joe Photo: MTV News Fat Joe’s “RapFix Live” interview on Friday (August 6) was heavy on highlights. The Bronx lyricist talked about confronting hip-hop nemesis 50 Cent, his memories of the late Big Pun and his strained relationship with Remy Ma. However, one of the more surprising moments arose when rocker Travis Barker joined the Terror Squad rapper’s sit-down. Barker — at the MTV News offices for a separate interview — warmly greeted Joe, who recalled fond times with Barker’s late pals DJ AM and Lil Chris. While Travis may be best known as the drummer for rock outfits Blink-182 and +44, he’s since branched out, becoming a familiar figure in the hip-hop scene. Barker has remixed songs by stars like Soulja Boy and hit the stage with the likes of Jamie Foxx and T-Pain . Joe even dubbed him “our hip-hop drummer. He gets it in. Ain’t nobody like him.” Barker said that he’s been inspired by both rap and rock for a long time. “Ten years ago … I’d be on tour with Blink or [his band] Transplants, one of my punk rock bands, and they’d be like, ‘What are you listening to?’ They’d be expecting me to say [something] like, ‘I’m listening to Minor Threat or Sex Pistols,’ and I would say … I can’t stop listening to Low End Theory [by] Tribe Called Quest, and they’d be bummed,” Barker revealed. “That stuff changed my life when I was a kid. I’d always be real honest and upfront about it. I listen to everything. I listen to Minor Threat just as much as I listen to Tribe.” In fact, Barker is working on the solo project Give the Drummer Some, which features a major cast of hip-hop talent, including Game, Lil Wayne, Swizz Beatz, Rick Ross and Beanie Sigel. Joe said MCs respect the drummer because he’s blurring the boundaries of hip-hop and rock by bringing the two genres together. “For somebody like Travis to tell Rick Ross or Game, ‘Yo, get in the studio,’ and they get in like this [snaps fingers], it just shows how much they appreciate what he’s doing towards the culture of hip-hop or rock or whatever you wanna call it,” Joe, who recently dropped his The Darkside, Vol. 1, said. Then, the two stars demonstrated what a hip-hop and rock collabo looks like with an impromptu performance. Barker brandished the drumsticks he always keeps on hand and took it back to the schoolyard, thumping out an uptempo beat on a stiff notebook. Joe leaned back in his chair, and with casual swagger, began to rattle off a swift freestyle. “This that genocide talk/ They killing babies again/ And there’s lines around the block/ Like it’s the ’80s again/ Yeah, the dark side and you don’t wanna go to this place/ Where I got special powers/ I could punch a hole through your face,” he rhymed. The Roots’ ?uestlove Teams Up With Amy Winehouse

Roots drummer says the supergroup is ‘definitely going to happen.’ By Mawuse Ziegbe ?uestlove Photo: Jeff Fusco/ Getty Images Amy Winehouse will apparently be back in the studio soon — but this time she won’t be alone. According to ?uestlove , the Roots drummer has teamed up with the troubled star to form a supergroup. The influential hip-hop artist revealed in an interview with AOL’s Spinner that the duo is indeed planning to work together. The group is “definitely going to happen,” the drummer said. No name for the group has been confirmed, however, ?uesto disclosed that the singer has been in the lab with producer Salaam Remi, who worked on Winehouse’s breakout album Back to Black . The drummer gushed that the resulting work is “amazing.” While Winehouse has apparently touched base with Remi, ?uesto said that getting face time in the studio with the star has become an issue because of the embattled soul singer’s immigration issues. “It’s just that we have to work overtime to get her visa situation together. The closest she can come to the States is Jamaica.” Static with immigration has reportedly caused the singer to cancel U.S. tour dates in the past. The star also ended up accepting her Grammy Awards via satellite in 2008 due to visa problems. But even if Winehouse can’t make it across the pond, ?uesto said he’ll try to speak with the Grammy-winning star in Europe. “I’ll be in France for four, five days, so I’ll see if she’s up for discussing this over dinner.” In the meantime, the stars are chopping it up over the Internet. “We’ve been Skype-ing the sh– out of each other.” This is not ?uestlove’s first time at the supergroup rodeo. He has also been at the center of the Soulquarians , an evolving collective that has included many of the drummer’s game-changing peers such as Erykah Badu, Common, Mos Def and D’Angelo. The Reefer Song ~ Night Shift [1977]

Back in 1977, I was the drummer for a rock band called Night Shift. Our very talented lead guitarist/vocalist, Ronnie McCarley, wrote most of our material at the time. One of the things he wrote was “The Reefer Song,” which, with the help of my friend Bobby Jackson, I was able to rescue from an ancient, gnarled tape that was all but unsalvageable, had anyone but Bobby been working on it. But salvage it he did, and I created a little slideshow video to go with it. Enjoy!
