He acknowledges the fact and says “I find myself at odds with other greens almost as often as I find myself fighting our common enemies. I’ve had bruising battles over a long series of miracle solutions supported by my friends.” And now he is ready to rumble once again, on that issue that is front of mind for every environmentalist: Vertical farms. He writes

If You Really Want To Get Off Oil, Move To Buffalo

A few years ago, Wired Magazine published an interesting map showing carbon footprint per capita that graphically demonstrated the obvious: Where you get sprawl, lots of cars and air conditioning, you get a much bigger footprint for every citizen due to their higher energy consumption. So if we want to reduce our footprint and get off oil, what is the best thing for Americans to do? Move to Buffalo…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Giorgio Armani Hotel in Dubai: Raw Video

Italian designer Giorgio Armani opened his first hotel at the world's tallest tower in Dubai on Tuesday (April 27), giving a boost to the Gulf Arab emirate's bid to recover from a debt crisis. The designer brought his trademark minimalist style to a city famous for excess, with the Armani Hotel Dubai designed with an understated palette of cream and earth colours. Armani — whose business is worth around 2.4 billion USD a year in sales — partnered with Emaar Properties, the Arab world's largest listed developer, in 2005 to develop a series of hotels, resorts and residences in key cities around the world. From man-made islands shaped like palm trees to an indoor ski slope in the desert, Dubai has marketed itself as the city of bling, putting itself on the map with a bigger is better policy. A standard room in the hotel, which does not have a single picture on its walls, will cost 4,000 dirhams (1,089USD) a night, while the best suite has a price tag of 40,000 dirhams. A table at the Prive lounge, which is home to the world's largest LCD screen, will cost at least 3,000 dirhams a visit, as guests can feast their eyes on Armani shows and videos. The 160-room Armani hotel occupies six floors in the Burj Khalifa tower, which opened on January 4, in addition to eight floors dedicated to 144 Armani luxurious residences. The two parties declined to reveal the cost of the hotel. Dubai, one of seven members comprising the United Arab Emirates and the Arab world's trade and tourism hub, saw the sharpest drop in hotel revenues in the Middle East for 2009, hit by the global financial crisis. The heavily indebted emirate generates around 19 percent of its gross domestic product from tourism and its economy has suffered as people tightened budgets after the crisis. Dubai's construction boom started when it first allowed foreigners to buy into its property market in 2002. Luxury resorts, hotels, serviced apartments and holiday villas mushroomed, drawing nearly 7 million tourists in 2007. The Middle East, despite being hit by the global downturn, has shown some resilience over the past year with revenue dropping less than other regions, industry figures showed. Dubai's hotel market is closest to the bottom of the cycle and is showing signs of recovery with beach hotels leading the way and showing positive growth, a recent report by real estate service company Jones Lang LaSalle said. added by: ctv

Dubai ‘hit squad’ used fake Israeli names, EU passports

A few weeks ago we asked if Israel assassinated a senior member of Hamas in Dubai. Authorities in Dubai had blamed the death by electrocution of Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a senior military operative of Hamas on assassins who then fled the country. Well this week the plot, it seems, has thickened. Dubai investigators released this video from CCTV cameras they say show the 17 member hit squad. Eleven of the suspects names have been released as well as their passport photos. They were (unsurprisingly) traveling under fake names – the names of Israeli EU passport holders who deny any involvement in the affair. Here are the photos. Israel for its part denies having anything to do with the killing, though no one expects the Mossad to come out and claim responsibility anyway. The best backgrounder on this thus far comes from True/Slant's Neal Ungerleider (love that guy!) who writes: The Israeli intelligence agency certainly has the motives and the means. The modus operandi also fits prior Mossad operations. However, certain facts don’t add up. Mossad agents have had a long presence in the United Arab Emirates, which Israel has long held discrete economic and trade relations with. Presumably, had the Mossad been responsible, agents who had staked out the hotel prior would have been aware of the locations of both public and hidden CCTV cameras. The agents caught on camera, while highly professional, engaged in some odd behavior. The donning of fake beards and glasses in view of security cameras is one. Using the names of Israeli citizens for fake passports is another — what security agency would implicate their own citizens? Additionally, there is always the possibility of a false flag operation — where a foreign intelligence agency killed al-Mabhouh for their own purposes, while making it look like a Mossad killing. But who could possibly want to implicate Israel in an assassination? (I kid.) Who do you think is responsible? Take a wild guess? Sloppy Mossad operatives? False flag flying Iranian Revolutionary Guardsmen? Give us your best Dubai assassination theory in the comments. added by: afitzgerald
