Mark Wahlberg Talks ‘Fighter’ Sequel, Wahlburgers

He also reveals that Catherine Zeta-Jones just signed on to join him and Russell Crowe in ‘Broken City.’ By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Mark Wahlberg Mark Wahlberg was in the giving spirit at the Emmys this weekend, kicking MTV News a bunch of news about his upcoming projects — everything from a burger-based reality show to who he’ll be sharing the screen with on his next flick to who will be putting pen to paper for his planned “Fighter” sequel. This fall, Wahlberg is headed to New York to shoot “Broken City,” a noir drama in which he’ll play a private detective hired by the mayor (Russell Crowe) to investigate whether his wife is cheating on him. “I think Catherine Zeta-Jones just signed on to be Russell’s wife,” Wahlberg told us. A call to the production company behind the project was not immediately returned. Also on the movie tip, Wahlberg gave us an update about his “Fighter” sequel . Previously, David O. Russell, who helmed the Oscar-winning first film but didn’t pen the script, had told us he was looking to write the sequel. But Wahlberg let us know the original screenwriter will likely get the first crack at drafting the sequel, which will focus on Micky Ward’s three bouts with Arturo Gatti from 2002 to 2003. “We’re hoping that Scott Silver, who really wrote the first one, will come on, write the script,” the actor said. “This one we’d try to make a more commercial movie about the three big fights. Dramatically, there’s a lot more at stake for Micky because [after] he won the title, people automatically thought — he’s still living in Lowell [Massachusetts] — they thought all of a sudden he was rich. He made a couple thousand dollars for that fight when he won the title. And that’s when things got really difficult for him.” And, about those hamburgers, Wahlberg told us that not only is he deadly, deliciously serious about opening a patty joint with his brothers called Wahlburgers , but they’re also planning to shoot an Internet-based reality show about the effort. “Listen, when I told the story that I wanted to do a show about a movie star and his five friends running around Hollywood, everybody said it was the dumbest idea in the world,” Wahlberg said of his “Entourage” success. “My brother is a five-star chef. So it’s a family-run business. You’re going to see us doing a reality show about building the business. This is the real deal. We’ll throw it up there and see if it sticks.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Broken City.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Guns N’ Roses To Launch First U.S. Tour In Five Years

Trek kicks off October 28 in Orlando, Florida, and will feature more than 30 shows. By James Montgomery Guns N’ Roses’ Axl Rose Photo: Jeff Kravitz/ FilmMagic Having spent the past two years touring everywhere but the United States (except for that one time they played at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota ), Guns N’ Roses will finally bring their show to our shores, with a run of arena gigs set to kick off in late October. The tour — which launches October 28 at the Amway Center in Orlando and features more than 30 dates — is GN’R’s first run of U.S. shows in more than five years. That also means it’s the first time they’ve hit the road here since the 2008 release of their Chinese Democracy album . In addition to that Orlando show, the list of confirmed U.S. shows, according to the band’s publicist, are: October 29 at the American Airlines Arena in Miami; October 31 at the Bi-Lo Center Arena in Greenville, South Carolina; November 2 at the Philips Arena in Atlanta; November 5 at the Gexa Energy Pavillion in Dallas; November 12 at the Sprint Center Arena in Kansas City, Missouri; November 13 at the Target Center in Minneapolis; and November 19 at the Comcast Theater in Hartford, Connecticut. Guns N’ Roses will also hit Omaha, Nebraska; Tulsa, Oklahoma; Chicago; East Rutherford, New Jersey; Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Worcester, Massachusetts; Camden, New Jersey; Detroit; Cincinnati; Nashville, Tennessee; Indianapolis; and Denver, though dates and venues for those shows have yet to be announced. The latest incarnation of GN’R features (of course) mastermind Axl Rose, plus guitarists DJ Ashba, Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal and Richard Fortus, bassist Tommy Stinson, longtime keyboardist Dizzy Reed (and another keyboardist, Chris Pitman) and drummer Frank Ferrer. The band hasn’t played a show since a December 2010 date in Dubai, but will warm up for their U.S. run as only they can: with a series of massive dates in South America and Mexico. Ticket pre-sales for some of the upcoming shows kick off this week. The band has been posting information about the shows on their Facebook page . Meanwhile, their official site remains largely un-updated since 2009, and Axl Rose has yet to mention the tour over on his Twitter account (though he would like you to learn more about a cat named Dijon). ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’ Trailer: An Expert Analysis

We break down the first sneak peek of Tom Cruise’s fourth ‘Mission.’ By Eric Ditzian and Josh Wigler Tom Cruise in “Mission Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Paramount The first “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” trailer begins in classic fashion for this epic spy franchise: with a ridiculously destructive explosion. It’s been almost six years, after all, since the previous installment hit theaters, and so this new footage, which popped up online Tuesday evening, delivers the fiery goods early and often. Hit play on the embedded video as we walk through some of the key moments in the trailer, then read on for a deeper exploration of what’s going on in the “Ghost Protocol” footage. The J.J. Abrams Conspiracy Early on, as Tom Wilkinson explains the unachievable mission Tom Cruise and his team will confront, we see Wilkinson flip through a series of digital profiles of the IMF agents. Josh Holloway’s character, it seems, is “disavowed.” Now if you’re a fan of the franchise, you’ll remember that in the third film, Keri Russell (a veteran of producer J.J. Abrams’ “Felicity”) is killed surprisingly early in the action. Our working theory is that we’re in for a similar treat for Holloway, who starred in Abrams’ “Lost.” We don’t see a lot of him in the rest of the trailer, and when you do see him, he’s usually alone. All signs point to Holloway getting an unfortunate, and quite possibly bloody, exit in “Ghost Protocol.” The Brad Bird Comparison Midway through the trailer, we get a moment that clearly harkens back to the first “M:I” movie. As Jeremy Renner flies down into a silo-like structure and the camera follows him from above, we can’t help but think of the moment in the original film in which Cruise, secured via harness, swooped down into a secure CIA facility. While J.J. Abrams has told us “Ghost Protocol” will carry the unmistakable signature of director Brad Bird , who is making his live-action debut after animated fare like “The Incredibles,” it’s hard to see any Birdian touches here. This looks like a “Mission” movie, not a Brad Bird one. And we wonder if, in the finished film, that will still be the case. One of Bird’s signature stylistic traits is action (and interactions) infused with humor, and “M:I” is hardly a franchise that goes for laughs. The Tom Cruise Marathon It would not be a Tom Cruise movie, let alone a “Mission” movie, without a shot of the action star running like the wind. There’s a hilarious YouTube video about this, which is definitely worth watching. But all jokes aside, let’s give Cruise some serious credit: We tend to take him for granted, but the guy is almost 50 years old, and here he’s running, jumping, diving and nearly dying. That’s impressive stuff. The Jeremy Renner Possibility Renner, of “Hurt Locker” fame, is a new face in the franchise; last year, he told MTV News he was being groomed to take over the franchise from Cruise . But that’s not at all the sense we get from the trailer, especially when Cruise suggests Renner is hiding something. First off, Renner is reportedly the front-runner to take over the “Bourne” franchise from Matt Damon, and it’d be odd to have the guy be the face of two separate spy series. And second, based on some of the dialogue in the trailer, there just might be a twist with Renner’s character in “Ghost Protocol.” Is he a villain? Is the trailer just trying to throw us for a loop? Can we possibly have a “Mission” movie in the future that doesn’t feature Cruise himself? The IMAX Grandeur The trailer wraps up with an epic scene in which Tom Cruise scales the Burj Khalifa building in Dubai, the tallest building in the world. This scene is compelling for two reasons. One, it was shot with IMAX cameras, and for all the technical mumbo-jumbo you can get into when talking about this technology, the fact is that watching something shot in IMAX delivers a singularly breathtaking visual scope. “Ghost Protocol” will be worth seeing in an IMAX theater just for this scene. And second, Cruise clearly stole the gloves he wore in “Minority Report” to scale this building, “Spider-Man”-style. Hey, can you blame a guy for trying to sneak a swarm of blockbusters into one film? ‘Mission: Impossible 4’ Is ‘Intense,’ Katie Holmes Says

Mrs. Tom Cruise says ‘Ghost Protocol’ is ‘the best ‘Mission’ yet.’ By Kara Warner Katie Homes & Guillermo Del Toro Photo: MTV News While we’ve been awaiting an official trailer for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” — which is said to drop in front of this week’s “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” — a French version leaked online Monday (June 27), and reportedly contains plenty of expected shots of Tom Cruise involved in crazy action sequences as super-spy Ethan Hunt. Since we have yet to see the trailer or any footage ourselves, when MTV News caught up with Cruise’s better half, Katie Holmes, Monday during the press day for “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” we asked if she’s seen any of the film yet. “I have. I had an advanced screening,” she said with a laugh, adding that it’s a perk of being married to the film’s star. As for her thoughts about Cruise’s death-defying stunts in the film, particularly those he performed atop Dubai’s Burj Khalifa (the world’s tallest building), Holmes turned the question over to Guillermo del Toro, who produced “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark.” “What did you think, Guillermo, about the Burj?” she asked him. “I love it!” he said, at which point they both agreed that Cruise’s stunts were scarier than their film, which revolves around the demonic activities of a group of terrifying little creatures that seek out and kill humans, particularly children. “It’s amazing,” Holmes continued. “The movie is going to be very cool and intense and the best ‘Mission’ yet.” The actress also mentioned that she’d be game for a role that required a few crazy stunts herself. “I think it sounds fun,” she said. Del Toro then chimed in with his own “Mission: Impossible Diaries,” so to speak: “I live ‘Mission: Impossible.’ It’s what I call my diet,” he joked, and then proceeded to hum the “Mission: Impossible” theme song, while miming his insatiable appetite, making Holmes burst out laughing. Holmes weighed-in: “I have a lot of ‘Mission: Impossible’ moments, just being a mom.” Del Toro agreed: “Yes, coping with the home front.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

Jeremy Renner Talks Breakout Year, ‘Mission: Impossible’ And ‘Avengers’

‘Hurt Locker’ star is one of the actors we’re most thankful for in 2010. By Eric Ditzian Tom Cruise performs a stunt in Dubai for “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” Photo: Barcroft/Fame Pictures This time of year puts MTV News into a thankful spirit, as we look back at the actors and filmmakers whose work has kept our hearts warm through the winter months and has made us sweat with joy during the summer season. And so each year, we give our thanks. In the past, we’ve feted Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Reynolds and Quentin Tarantino . Thankful Week 2010 kicks off with a chat with Jeremy Renner, because his accomplishments over the past 12 months are not only impressive, but richly deserved. This year, his breakout turn in “The Hurt Locker” landed him at the Oscars with a Best Actor nomination, one of nine the Iraq war flick nabbed. Casting directors soon came a-calling. Having already signed up for Ben Affleck’s “The Town” (a role that led to some early Oscar buzz once again), Paramount tapped Renner to star alongside Tom Cruise in the resurrection of the “Mission: Impossible” franchise. And this summer, the 39-year-old found himself at Comic-Con, standing besides the likes of Downey and Samuel L. Jackson, after being cast as Hawkeye in “The Avengers,” Marvel Studios’ upcoming superhero all-star flick. Mission, accomplished. These days, Renner is stationed in Dubai, where’s he’s pulling wicked stunts alongside Cruise in “Mission.” During a break from shooting, he called up MTV News to chat about his crazy year, his current production and why he’s so excited to get busy with “Avengers.” MTV : Congratulations on the stellar year. You start off the year with an Oscar nomination, you’re in “The Town,” you land “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” and “The Avengers.” Does 2010 feel like a landmark year for you? Jeremy Renner : Over the last 20 years, it certainly is one of the bigger ones. It’s been a tremendous year. I feel very lucky in some ways and ready in other ways. I couldn’t be more blessed. I’m just excited to get to work. MTV : You’d been around and respected in the industry for a while, but you hadn’t notched that true breakout role until “Hurt Locker.” Were you starting to think it wasn’t going to happen? Renner : Well, I felt pretty happy over the decade working so much and getting to do some great films. It’s just to be able to do more and stretch and grow as an artist. It never felt like there was a timeline. I was ecstatic about where I was over the last 10 years. I’m almost 40, but I don’t look 40, and I don’t play 40, and I’m not going to for a while! MTV : Has there been one surreal point over the last year that kind of encapsulates everything for you? Renner : That’s almost every day, brother, for the last year. I say to my friends, “Is this real? Is this really happening?” I constantly pinch myself, because I can’t believe I’m in Dubai shooting “Mission: Impossible.” I embrace all of it, even the negative things that come along with this success. MTV : What’s been negative? Renner : I’m a pretty private individual, and I like to stay private. And I’m pretty free-spirited and pretty giving, and I get taken advantage of, just being too nice sometimes. It’s nice to go to Starbucks for a coffee, but it gets difficult when you have to have 19 conversations to get a cup of coffee. People are usually very respectful, but sometimes I don’t want to chat. It’s a wonderfully high-class problem. I just have to be conscious of what I do and what I say and where I go. I have to be careful about speaking off the cuff. I do have a mouth on me. MTV : I imagine standing up at Comic-Con next to all those guys was fairly surreal. What was going through your head at that point? Renner : That’s bananas. That’s bananas for everybody, for Robert Downey and Sam Jackson. You can never get used to that unless you’re Bono. Maybe he’s not used to that. It’s a strange thing, having 7,000 people scream at you, whether they love you or they hate you. I don’t know, it could have been half and half. MTV : Come on, the fans have embraced you! Renner : Yeah, I’m pretty lucky about that. But it’s intense! MTV : What’s been the biggest difference for you professionally since “Hurt Locker”? Is there less for you to prove in auditions? Are you getting the offers you didn’t before? Renner : Not having to prove anything — that’s been around for a while. Within the industry, that awareness has been around, which has been great. But now things happen faster and they happen more frequently. I’m attached now to big franchise movies. “Mission: Impossible” happened so quickly. And then “The Avengers.” This is going to be the next 10 years of my life. That’s strange, because I’m used to moving on and going to the next movie. MTV : And now you’re hanging out with Tom Cruise in Dubai. Renner : I go to work, and I can’t wait to learn from him. I just got to see a little teaser reel from the first couple months I’ve been filming. It was crazy. MTV : What’s the craziest stunt you’ve had to do? Renner : Everything. I haven’t gotten to work too much in terms of acting stuff, but the stunts have been insane. Tom has been doing loads. He’s crazy, that guy. It’s unbelievable. He’s fearless. He’s great to watch. He inspires me to want to be better. I’m training in the gym and working out and fighting and doing everything I can to try and keep up. I’m doing hand-to-hand combat, Muay Thai and kung fu and learning how to take someone out quickly. I need to look like I know what I’m doing! MTV : Well, we’re very thankful that “Mission” is coming back, and we’re very, very thankful “Avengers” is finally happening. Renner : I was just texting with Downey before I called you. MTV : Has there been a lot of communication between all you guys? Renner : We did a creative meeting with everyone months ago before everyone took off. We met with [director] Joss [Whedon] and the cast and Marvel, just in terms of the script and where we want it to go. It was a little powwow. It feels like a very collaborative effort. Right now we’re off and dividing and conquering, but soon we’ll link up and get the rest of the guys and work on that. I’m very thankful for everyone I get to work with. It’s a tremendous time in my life. Thanksgiving is a time for taking stock, expressing gratitude and, most importantly, overeating. We at MTV News have been gorging all year at movie theaters, so it’s about time we looked back and gave thanks to our favorite actors and filmmakers of 2010. Enjoy exclusive interviews with our winners all week long. Is Bloomberg Supporting Ground Zero Mosque for Business Reasons?

In recent days, New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg has become a beloved press figure as a result of his unshaking support for the Ground Zero mosque. Isn’t it fascinating how in this environment where rich people are being demonized at every turn all you need to do is a support a popular liberal cause and your financial sins are instantly forgiven? With this in mind, the good folks at Big Journalism have uncovered some rather startling financial connections between this media mogul and the Arab world that haven’t raised any eyebrows from journalists that love to follow the money when there’s a conservative at the other end of the smoking wallet. Consider the uproar last week surrounding News Corporation’s contribution to the Republican Governors Association. As you read Mondo Frazier’s marvelous piece  “Follow the Money: Could Mayor Bloomberg’s Media Business Interests in the Middle East Have Anything to Do with His Support of the Ground Zero Mosque?” ask yourself why the seemingly always curious press have ignored any examination of this billionaire’s motives: On October 2, 2009, The Dubai Chronicle reported Chairman and President of Bloomberg LP Peter T. Grauer met with UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at Maktoum’s Emirate office. According to the Dubai Chronicle, Grauer gave a presentation of Bloomberg future expansion plans in the ‘area of business information’ in the United Emirates, North Africa, and India. Grauer stated the UAE was a great place to expand, the UAE’s “logistic facilities” the ‘biggest incentive for investors and companies to expand their businesses in the country and the region beyond’. “Particularly since the meltdown of the western capitalist system, there has been an increasingly large focus on the virtues of Islamic finance. Today, there is no one single provider of information that caters to the Islamic finance market. So by Bloomberg being here, we are in the process  of building out an Islamic finance product. We are very confident that we can build a product that meets the needs of the market right now.” -Max Linnington, Regional Head of Bloomberg Middle East and South Asia on the company’s plan to build a Bloomberg hub in Dubai at the Dubai International Financial Centre(DIFC), October 29, 2009 But there’s more: On March 10, 2010, the Khaleej Times reported Bloomberg Set for Dubai expansion in bid to double revenues by 2014 . “Bloomberg, a leading global provider for financial data and news services, plans to “significantly boost regional operations from its Dubai hub as it is bullish about growth prospects of the emirate as a global financial center, a top executive said.” The coincidences continue: the Mayor’s company is banking on “doubling revenues by 2014″ in a region that just happens to be largely populated by Muslims. As I said at the top, this is the kind of smoking gun the press would normally attack like a pack of hungry wolves. Couldn’t all the international publicity Bloomberg is now getting for being America’s foremost supporter of this mosque be doing wonders for his position in the Arab world? Mightn’t that dramatically help his media company’s push into this region? Why hasn’t this gotten the kind of coverage News Corp’s contribution to the RGA got last week? After all, the point made by folks on the Left was that News Corp’s reporting can’t possibly be taken seriously if it’s making such a large donation to one political Party. Shouldn’t the same be true for Bloomberg? If his media company has recently invested time and money in the Muslim world, and could benefit tremendously from the favorable publicity he’s getting concerning his advocacy of this mosque, shouldn’t his veracity be similarly questioned? This seems especially the case given further revelations about News Corp’s connections to Saudi billionaire Al-Waleed bin Talal. For those that missed it, former Bush administration official Dan Senor was on Fox & Friends Monday, and he made a comment about Al-Waleed’s financing of the Ground Zero mosque. This led liberal media members – including Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart – to point out that Al-Waleed is the biggest shareholder in News Corp. Missing in this newest Fox News gotcha was that it actually demonstrated FNC’s ability to separate the interests of its largest investor from its reporting. Think about it: if Fox was doing Al-Waleed’s bidding, its hosts and contributors wouldn’t be attacking a mosque their largest investor was funding. That would quite literally be biting the hand that feeds them. Quite the contrary, as the news outlet that has been the most outspoken against the location of this Islamic center, Fox has taken a position that can’t be at all popular with its largest shareholder. Maybe someone should inform Stewart and all the other Fox haters in the media of this delicious dichotomy. Which brings us back to New York’s mayor: if the press think FNC is incapable of separating its reporting from its political contributions, shouldn’t they have similar concerns that Bloomberg can’t separate his business interests from his mayoral decisions? Or do such conflicts of interest only arise for conservatives?
