‘American Idol’: We Have Never Used AutoTune

Controversy over use of pitch-correction software on ‘X Factor’ causes show to release statement. By Gil Kaufman David Archuleta Photo: Fox In the wake of the scandal over the use of the pitch-correcting software AutoTune on the season premiere of the British singing reality show “X-Factor,” the producers of “American Idol” released a statement denying that they had altered contestants’ vocals during the competition. “We have never, nor would we ever, use Auto-Tuning during the ‘American Idol’ competition,” unnamed producers of the show said in a statement released Thursday, according to the Associated Press . No allegations had been made that “Idol” had employed the technology, but the blowback from the “X-Factor” scandal was so bad that it seems “Idol” brass felt they needed to nip any suggestions in the bud. As the AP noted, singers on “Idol” are often criticized for sounding “pitchy”; during the show’s most recent season, mop-haired finalist Tim Urban was often so clearly out of tune that his run on the show surprised many longtime watchers. There have been other mini-scandals on “Idol,” such as the admission last year that the group sing-alongs that begin the results shows are lip-synched . But no one has suggested that performances that count toward the competition are tweaked. In response to the controversy, judge and producer Simon Cowell said, “people have got to be able to trust ‘The X Factor’ … we are not faking anything,” and promised that AutoTune will not be used again on the show. The Daily Mail reported that Cowell spent the week speaking to producers of the show — which he will bring to the U.S. in 2011 — and that an episode originally intended to air on September 4 will be shown this Saturday in an effort to move beyond the doctored-vocals scandal. Producers of the show claimed that AutoTune was only used to clean up sound from the audition footage, which is shot in a studio where there are more than 40 microphones in the room. But even a cursory listen to the tweaked bits from last week makes clear that the software beloved by musicians from T-Pain to Sean Kingston was used to clean up shaky vocals from a number of contestants. “X Factor” sources have admitted that AutoTune has been employed in the past as well, but denied that it had been used to make some singers sound better and others worse for entertainment purposes. Though “Idol” producers made the pre-emptivestrike against AutoTune , they still did not pull back the curtain on the most pressing “Idol” issue: who are the show’s new judges? With the fresh faces expected to take their seats after Labor Day, “Idol” watchers are eager to get confirmation on reports that Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and singer/actress Jennifer Lopez have joined the panel. ‘Real World: Boston’ Alum Sean Duffy Running For Congress

Duffy, who is a district attorney in Wisconsin, is backed by former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin. By Josh Wigler Sean Duffy Photo: MTV News Former “Real World: Boston” castmember Sean Duffy is looking to move from reality-television star to congressman. Duffy, a conservative district attorney, is considered a strong contender to win the Republican primary in Wisconsin’s Seventh Congressional District, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. The position is currently held by outgoing democrat David Obey. Duffy was thought of as a long shot to win, since Obey has maintained the position since his election in 1969, but the incumbent congressman announced his decision not to seek re-election in early May. Duffy’s campaign website includes the politician’s stance on key issues like the economy, health care, education, national defense and agriculture. He has received endorsements from notable GOP figures including onetime vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin and former Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty. When Obey was still a candidate for Congress, Palin likened Duffy’s campaign as an example of the “many daring Davids [taking] on entrenched Goliaths” across the United States political landscape. “We’ve had 2,100 online contributions over the course of our campaign, which means we’ve had great support not just here in Wisconsin, but great national support,” Duffy said in a video message posted to his website June 21. The Times reports that Duffy has raised $600,000 during his campaign. Duffy has served as Ashland County’s district attorney since 2002. Outside of politics, he is best known as a veteran of MTV’s “The Real World: Boston.” His wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, is also a “Real World” alumnus; she appeared during the show’s San Francisco-set third season, and the two met during “Road Rules: All Stars” in 1998. ‘American Idol’ Season Nine: Neither Lee, Crystal Nor Casey Thought They’d Win

DeWyze, Bowersox and James never thought of themselves as front-runners. By James Montgomery Crystal Bowersox Photo: MTV News Modesty is an underrated trait — unless you’re a finalist on “American Idol,” a show that exists solely to discover music’s next great megastar. The whole point of appearing on it is to win, thereby securing a recording contract and the opportunity to become unbelievably famous and wealthy. Modesty, it would seem, has no place on the “Idol” stage. Except for the just-completed ninth season, that is. Because, wow, was this season’s top three modest. At no point during the show’s run did any of the contestants seem to think that they could actually win, and despite the best efforts of journalists — who labeled the final three as “the front-runner” (Crystal Bowersox), “the underdog” ( eventual champ Lee DeWyze ) and “the dark horse” (Casey James) — that never really changed. In fact, based on conversations we’ve had with all three finalists, none of them ever remotely considered themselves the favorite. Not in the slightest. “I never considered myself to be the front-runner, simply because ‘American Idol’ is a show where literally anything can happen,” Bowersox said. “A lot of people that went home we never expected them to go home. … My goal was just to do my best each week and see what happened.” “Not only did I not think that I was the front-runner; I knew that I was not,” James laughed. “A lot of people got into reading the things on the Internet, and I just stayed away from all that. So I don’t know if there was anything that said that, but I never feel that way, and I don’t think it was really the case, either.” “I mean, people were saying stuff like that to me, I’m not going to lie about that, they’d be like, ‘Oh, you’re going to win,’ and I’d be like, ‘Oh, well, there’s still seven weeks to go,’ ” DeWyze added. “I never thought I had it in the bag or anything, but I think you have to have a sense of confidence in yourself, especially when you’re in a competition … [but] being a front-runner or an underdog, or whatever people said, it was hard not to listen to that stuff. You have to ignore it, because it is not a good thing.” That modesty holds true even now that the show is over. Sure, DeWyze is happy he won, but Bowersox and James seem positively giddy that they didn’t. “I’m cool with number two,” the dreadlocked dynamo smiled. “I gave it my best shot.” “I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” the Texas heartthrob added. “I mean, honestly, for me, I’m not going to say anything other than I feel like I’m exactly where I should be.” Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page , where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions. Janet Jackson on American Idol

J anet Jackson – on American Idol? One can’t deny the very unforgettable event that occurred during the show. The very event that I am most definitely writing about is the unexpected Janet Jackson American Idol appearance where she made a special appearance and did a performance with the contenders of the ninth season of the show. The Janet Jackson American Idol surprise was something quite impressive and a good number of people  have been buzzing about the occurrence right after hearing about her new hair style. They say that she had her locks cut off because she has a new movie coming in. The movie is called “Why Did I Get Married Too” and it is expected to be a funny one if this ‘book’ may be judged by its cover. Bret Michaels To Appear On ‘American Idol’ Tonight: Report

TMZ cites ‘spies’ as saying rocker will appear on ‘Idol’ finale. By MTV News staff Bret Michaels Photo: Tim Mosenfelder/ Getty Images Bret Michaels will appear on the “American Idol” finale tonight, TMZ reported on Wednesday evening (May 26). The site cited its ” ‘Idol’ spies” as saying the singer will make a “cameo” during the show, although at press time it was unclear whether he might perform. Last month, Michaels was hospitalized for a serious brain hemorrhage and was rushed to the hospital again last week due to a “warning stroke.” Despite his serious medical condition, Michaels has bounced back with vigor, making many television appearances in recent weeks — including a victory on the “Celebrity Apprentice” — and insisting that he’ll resume his tour with an appearance in Mississippi on Friday night. “I am not at 100 percent yet, but I have every intention of trying to continue the tour starting Friday in Biloxi,” he wrote in a message posted on his official website earlier this week. “I hope to see your rockin rollin, smiling faces on the road — that is the best medicine I can think of right now. You rock my world.” Michaels is set to perform at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Biloxi, Mississippi, followed by another 39 shows from New Jersey to Washington. The tour is not expected to finish up until early October in San Antonio. But hitting the road so soon after his multiple health problems seems to carry its fair share of dangers. Michaels admitted that his doctor warned him about the risks of even appearing on the “Apprentice” finale, saying, “Yes it’s been a risk, but I wanted to be here. I came to win and I’m glad to be on the show.” Following the subarachnoid brain hemorrhage he suffered last month, Michaels landed back in the hospital last week with a so-called warning stroke. Doctors also discovered the singer has a hole in his heart and have scheduled him for surgery to correct the issue in the fall. Yet Michaels clearly remains upbeat and committed to returning to his strenuous touring life. “With all of my heart, soul and the remaining organs I have left (lol) I would like to thank each and every one of you for all of your support and awesomeness,” Michaels wrote in his message. “All the good vibes and well wishes gave me the strength to go back to New York and win ‘Celebrity Apprentice.’ ” Related Photos Bret Michaels’ Career In Photos Related Artists Bret Michaels

Gang Starr’s DJ Premier ‘Salutes’ Guru During Two-Hour Radio Show

DJ also questions Solar’s claims about Guru’s health during final weeks. By Jayson Rodriguez Gang Starr’s DJ Premier and Guru Photo: Capitol Gang Starr ‘s DJ Premier took to the SiriusXM satellite airwaves over the weekend to salute Guru, his late partner in Gang Starr , during a lively tribute show that featured calls from original members of the group and Guru’s nephew, and plenty of memories of the late rap star. Preemo, who released a statement about Guru’s passing late last week, was upbeat throughout his weekly two-hour radio show. The producer shared his experience of visiting Guru in the hospital, recalling how taken aback he was at the sight of his sick friend. The anecdote, like many of the statements throughout the night, was coated with underhanded shots at Solar, the controversial figure who worked with Guru in recent years and took care of him in the rapper’s last months . “When I saw him, it really f—ed me up,” Premier said during the show. “When I saw him, it was so ill to see — because from what I was hearing about him waking up and tweeting, there’s no way [he could have done that]. He looked so gone. “And on top of that, if you with him and you love him, why did his nails look longer than a ruler? And he had an afro. I’ve taken care of people in the hospital: you can wash their hair, clean their nails off, or clean their feet. His feet were swollen, his toenails were really disgusting, so because of that it really f—ed me up. I went in there and took the logo of my shirt off, rubbed it against his whole body, and then I told him a message from me about how much I loved him. We were for life and we’ll always be for life. Then I kissed him on the face to let him know that I’m gonna miss him, because he looked like he was already gone.” Gang Starr, as a group, hadn’t released a project together since 2003’s The Ownerz. Premier and Guru reportedly were estranged at the time of the rapper’s death. In Guru’s last testament, a “farewell” letter released via Solar , the rapper allegedly directed some harsh words at his “former DJ.” Premier, however, declined to address the comments in the statement he released last week, saying he would cherish his memories of their time together and “never remove him from my heart and soul.” Premier praised Guru many times during the show, which he stressed was a “salute” to Guru’s life and musical contributions and not a tribute to his untimely passing. Premier also said that Guru’s body had been cremated last week and the ashes returned to his father in Massachusetts. Guru’s nephew, Justin Elam Ruff, who first alerted fans to the divide between Solar and the Elam family via an emotional YouTube message, called in to thank fans for their support. Big Suge, who appeared on Gang Starr records throughout the years, told the story about the group’s formation. Originally, Suge wanted him and Guru, who then called himself “Keithy E.,” to go by the name Gangster. But Guru suggested the two, along with Suge’s DJ brother, tweak the name to have a positive slant — and thus the Gang Starr Foundation was born. What do you think about DJ Premier’s tribute to Guru?
