The Sly, Underrated Greatness of Roger Corman’s Night Call Nurses

The Film : Night Call Nurses (1972), available on DVD in the new set Roger Corman’s Cult Classics: The Nurses Collection via Shout! Factory . Why it’s an Inessential Essential : The respectability gap between director Jonathan Kaplan’s recent and early-career work is pretty striking. Today, Kaplan works primarily in TV: He served as a co-executive producer for both E.R. and Without a Trace , and has also directed eight episodes of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit , two episodes of Brothers and Sisters and 40 episodes of E.R. But when Kaplan started his filmmaking career, he made sleazy but surprisingly sturdy exploitation pics like Truck Turner (1974), in which Isaac Hayes plays a bounty hunter that is very attached to beer and his cat, and The Slams (1973), a prison flick starring Jim Brown. Now Night Call Nurses , Kaplan’s 1972 directorial debut, has just been reissued in a new collection highlighting four nursesploitation pics produced by schlockmeister Roger Corman. Kaplan’s film is easily the best one in the set — and also a good indicator of Kaplan’s then-nascent talent. Make no mistake, the longevity of Night Call Nurses — a natural moneymaker for Corman — is largely attributable to Kaplan’s experimental direction. As Kaplan explains in the featurette “Anatomy of a Nurse Film,” Nurses ‘ plot is a variation on a formula that Corman swiped from Valley of the Dolls , another film that follows three female protagonists. A trio of nurses test their respective comfort zones: Barbara (Patty Byrne) has a unfulfilling affair with her group therapy psychiatrist while Janis (Alana Stewart) has a fling with a speed-addicted former patient and Sandra (Mittie Lawrence) helps a Black Panther-type convict meet up with his fellow radicals. All three girls are defined via exploitation-friendly character types: Barbara’s the uptight one, Janis is the flirty and free-spirited blonde and Sandra’s the politically motivated black girl. I hesitate to call these girls walking stereotypes, because Kaplan does a good job of contextualizing their titillating and character-defining concerns. One guy trips balls and imagines that he has mirror tiles for hands while a woman kneels before a big red crucifix before throwing herself off a roof (upon impact, we see a porcelain doll’s head crack open). Through these dynamic and trippy scenes, both of which were shot using handheld cameras, Kaplan vividly and quickly the hallucinatory, drug and sex-fueled haze that his characters are trying to define themselves in. Night Call Nurses is atmospheric and visually accomplished, making it a satisfying morsel of junk-food cinema. How the DVD/Blu-ray Makes the Case for the Film : Kaplan’s very forthcoming about the production history of Night Call Nurses in an interview featurette called “Anatomy of a Nurse Film.” He insists on discussing the film as collaboration between Corman and himself. He explains that Corman called Kaplan late one night and offered him the directing gig based on Martin Scorsese’s recommendation. Once he’d accepted the job, Corman was apparently very loose with Kaplan. The only rules Corman laid down was that the picture should be done shooting in 13 days and that T&A must be shot in a certain way, presumably to get past censors. “‘Frontal nudity from the waist up, total nudity from behind (no pubic hair),'” Kaplan says for Corman. Kaplan also explains that working with Corman was a great filmmaking education: “That was the last guy I worked with who ever understood what a director really does.” Which doesn’t mean that Kaplan glosses over Corman’s infamous tendency of cutting budgetary corners. According to Kaplan, Corman’s advice to him was: “‘Ask your cinematographer how long to make it beautiful, how long to make it passable and how long to get an image? And then just get the image.” Kaplan clearly settled for something between “passable” and “beautiful.” And he did it all on a microscopic budget of $75,000, too! Other Interesting Trivia : One of the funnier anecdotes Kaplan relates about working with Corman is his story about trying to convince Stewart to do her big nude scene after she became tentatively skittish. Corman apparently told Kaplan to go to the stretch of Sunset Boulevard called “The Stroll” and hire the “skankiest hooker” that he could find. Kaplan was then told to introduce the prostitute to Stewart as the actress’s body double with the expectation that Stewart would then volunteer to do her own stunts. Kaplan was uncomfortable driving, however, and he failed to convince Roger’s wife Julie Corman to accompany him to the Stroll. So they just talked Stewart into doing the nude scenes without hiring a professional sex worker. It’s probably safe to assume that Kaplan’s never had to do anything so risque for Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Jason Biggs Goes Full Frontal In ‘American Reunion’

Cast talks to MTV News about seeing everything in the fourth theatrical flick of the ‘American Pie’ series. By Ryan J. Downey Jason Biggs in “American Reunion” Photo: Universal Pictures Jason Biggs famously humped a dessert in what became the most memorable scene in “American Pie.” Now, more than a dozen years later, an older (but obviously not much wiser) Jim Levenstein ups the ante in “American Reunion” by going full-frontal in that very same kitchen. “My penis — the nerve, you ready? — went and got an agent after the first test screening of the movie,” the actor joked with MTV News while doing press for the fourth theatrical “American Pie” flick, on which he served as a co-executive producer in addition to reprising the role that made him famous. “It tested through the roof, my penis did. It was the highest-scoring character in the movie. It scored a 97, which — I don’t know if you’ve been to these things — is amazing. It went and got an agent, signed with [Creative Artists Agency]. I’m not even with CAA.” “American Reunion,” as the name implies, reunites the cast from the raunchy but warm-hearted teen comedy series that began with “American Pie” in 1999. “American Pie 2,” “American Wedding” and a handful of direct-to-DVD “American Pie Presents” movies followed. In “Reunion,” the gang gets back together in their old town. Jim is still married to “band camp” gal Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). Now raising a young son, the couple is going through some difficulties adjusting to adulthood. After a night out with Stifler (Seann William Scott), Finch (Eddie Kay Thomas) and the rest of the boys, Jim awakens in his old kitchen stark naked. Michelle and Selena (Dania Ramirez) burst in on him unexpectedly and they see everything. So will audiences when the film opens on Friday. “If they didn’t show Jason Biggs’ penis [in ‘American Reunion’], I was out,” joked Scott, who also served as a co-executive producer. “Or John Cho’s mustache,” added Thomas. “I needed both of those things in big bold letters at the top of the contract. Neither are on the poster, which is weird.” Biggs is aware that the risky full-frontal scene puts “Reunion” in the same category as last year’s critically acclaimed drama “Shame,” which generated quite a bit of buzz thanks in part to Michael Fassbender’s similar bravery. “‘Boogie Nights,’ ‘Shame’ — those are [my penis’] competition. It’s an elite group of penises out there right now,” Biggs said, smiling widely. “The thing is, he’s got a lock on the comedy. Well, that’s not true, because of [Jason] Segel [in ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’]. Really, it’s those two penises that are in the hunt for all of the sort of primo comedy penis roles.” “How I Met Your Mother” star Hannigan had some thoughts of her own about Biggs’ career aspirations. “It’s weird that [your penis] so desperately wants to be an actor,” she weighed in. “I always thought he would be such a great director since he’s always telling you what to do.” Biggs laughed loudly, conceding, “Ahhh, well done!” Thomas and Scott agreed that the latest chapter, which was written and directed by the “Harold & Kumar” duo of Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, carries on a tradition of authenticity. “The whole movie kind of comes from that honest place. It’s not like, ‘Oh, let’s show some boobs,’ ‘Oh God, I’m terrified I’m going to be a virgin for the rest of my life.’ And ‘Oh, my god, it’s really scary that we’re 30 all of a sudden and we’re at our high school reunion,’ ” Thomas said. “I think Jon and Hayden wrote a script that came from an honest place,” he added. “That’s what got us all onboard for this one.” Check out everything we’ve got on “American Reunion.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . The Avengers Will Close the Tribeca Film Festival, Play Host to ‘Local Heroes’

The Tribeca Film Festival has announced The Avengers as the closing-night selection of its 11th annual event, where Joss Whedon’s summer superhero blockbuster will have its New York premiere on April 28 — and for a good cause, according to Marvel and fest organizers. “Honoring the spirit of the Tribeca Film Festival, the screening will allow the opportunity for Marvel’s The Avengers to celebrate everyday heroes from police agencies, fire departments, first responders and various branches of the U.S. military,” reads a statement just over the transom at ML HQ. “These local heroes will have an opportunity to attend the screening and meet the cast.” Marvel Studios’ producer Kevin Feige adds: “We all know and love our iconic Super Heroes, but when it really counts, it’s our real-life heroes who save the world every day by making it a better place for all of us.” Whedon, meanwhile, reacted with customary cheekiness: “Showing at Tribeca is both an honor and a double homecoming for me, who grew up in Manhattan, and for the movie, which wrapped production there. I’m thoroughly psyched to be closing the festival with our intimate little think-piece.” More to come at Movieline as Tribeca gets underway next month. Follow S.T. VanAirsdale on Twitter . Citizen Ruth: Looking Back at Alexander Payne’s Prescient Abortion Satire

What’s the Film : Citizen Ruth (1996), available on DVD and Hulu Why it’s an Inessential Essential : The premise — one woman’s attempt to have an abortion turns into a national debate and bidding war — was a bold choice out of the gate for writer-director Alexander Payne. Citizen Ruth is his first feature film, and like his subsequent work, it has a biting wit, absurdities from every corner, and deeply flawed characters. Ruth (Laura Dern) is a dim-witted screw-up who is pregnant for the fifth time; her four offspring have been placed elsewhere because of her addiction to inhalants. When she is charged with a felony for huffing “patio sealant,” the judge coerces her to terminate the pregnancy. In jail, she meets anti-abortion crusaders who start a tug-of-war with pro-choice rivals over the unborn child, who becomes widely known as Baby Tanya after a clinic doctor manipulates Ruth into imagining keeping it. Tackling this tricky subject matter, Payne found an unreal story to tell, except that part of it was real. In the DVD commentary, he and co-writer Jim Taylor reveal that the plot was inspired by the true story of a woman who was offered money by anti-abortion and pro-choice camps to honor their respective wishes for her fetus. The parallels to reality don’t stop there. In one of Dern’s best unhinged moments, Ruth screams at two overzealous medical staffers at a clinic, who then pull out all the stops and force her to watch a video of abortion footage. That seems far-fetched, though maybe not in places like Arizona, where a lawmaker recently proposed a bill that would require women to watch an abortion before having one. The state representative, Terri Proud, calls her idea “(The) Reproductive Games.” Truth is catchier than fiction. Why We Recommend It Now : Released in 1996, Citizen Ruth resonates today, of course, because the issue of affordable health care has evolved into a fight over reproductive rights. Although Baby Tanya, were she real/alive, would be old enough to have a Sweet 16 party this year, not much has changed in the public discourse. Payne skewers the radicals on both sides, who are largely motivated by impressing their leaders — Tippi Hedren, for example, as a mother/god figure to the lunatic pro-choice activists. Their behavior is over the top, but their ideologies still echo. Among the points the movie makes so nicely is that extremists tend to lose sight of the real people and issues involved. When Sandra Fluke testified about hormonal birth control, the point she made — that the drug treats medical conditions — was lost once Rush Limbaugh piped in and turned Fluke into an abstraction and a “prostitute.” Ruth is unfit to be a mother, yet a contingent of crazies think she should take a stab at parenthood, aided by 15 grand, because somehow it’ll just all work out. There’s something to be said for laughing so we don’t cry, and Citizen Ruth allows us to do that. The DVD has few extras, but it does feature a revealing commentary track from Payne, Taylor, Dern and production designer Jane Ann Stewart. Explaining that the film doesn’t take sides, Stewart says her team strived to make both camps look a little foolish. Payne gets to the heart of the matter, saying, “Jane, you asked me, ‘Is nothing sacred?’ And it’s true. Everything is sacred, and nothing is sacred. Everyone is open for being examined as a human being.” Other Interesting Trivia : Payne says the film’s limited release was probably the reason he didn’t receive one threatening letter over it, though he was concerned about potential violence at the time from groups like the Army of God. Dern recalls a conversation with the women who ran Planned Parenthood in Texas, who called her to say how much they loved being mocked in the film. Also, let the end credits roll a couple minutes for a hint at Ruth’s fate. PREVIOUS INESSENTIAL ESSENTIALS The Last Temptation of Christ The Sitter

Can You Guess the Most-Rented DVD of 2011?

Can you guess the most-rented DVD of 2011? Hint: It wasn’t the most-bought DVD of 2011, but you probably already knew that . Another hint: Despite all odds, it doesn’t star Danny Trejo . Give up? Don’t we all! Per the LAT : The Bruce Willis action-comedy Red was the most rented DVD of 2011 but wasn’t even close to the top of the sales charts. The most rented movies are a mix of films that largely enjoyed solid but not spectacular runs at the box office. They seemed to leave theaters with good word-of-mouth, leading people to sample the films via rental. Among the most bought DVDs, meanwhile, are many of the top-grossing hits of last year. Animated films sold particularly well. Since children often watch their favorite animated movies multiple times, making a purchase was more economical than rental. No. 1 on the list was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 , while other big sellers included Deathly Hallows: Part 2 , Tangled , Transformers: Dark of the Moon and The Help . The only film to make both Top 10 lists: breakout comedy Bridesmaids . So if there’s any doubt that the bulk of midgrade theatrical releases are just commercials for DVDs that studios don’t really want you to rent anyway, and/or that better blockbusters have the potential to influence stronger DVD sales, let it be put to rest.
