Erika Van Pelt Sent Home On ‘American Idol’

DeAndre Brackensick and Heejun Han join Van Pelt in bottom three. By Adam Graham Erika Van Pelt and Ryan Seacrest on “American Idol” Photo: Fox Erika Van Pelt debuted a dramatic new look on Wednesday’s episode of “American Idol,” but it wasn’t enough to save her in the competition as the 26-year-old Rhode Islander was sent packing on Thursday’s (March 22) “Idol.” Van Pelt made it into the finals as a wild-card choice and consistently found herself facing elimination. This week she chopped off her blond locks and revealed a sleek, short black ‘do and received strong marks for her version of Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” But it wasn’t enough for viewers, apparently, as she landed at the bottom of America’s votes. She sang “I Believe in You and Me” for the judges to try to get them to use their save on her, but they let her go with a swift “no,” delivered by Randy Jackson. (As if the pain of elimination isn’t tough enough, Van Pelt now has to go back and explain to her New England friends what she was doing singing “New York State of Mind.” Good luck with that one.) Van Pelt found herself in the bottom three alongside DeAndre Brackensick and Heejun Han. Brackensick was released to safety first and was followed by Han. Han was on the receiving end of some stinging criticism from mentor Jimmy Iovine following his goofball performance Wednesday night of Billy Joel’s “My Life.” “He came out and disrespected the entire process. His performance was more like four minutes of a bad Adam Sandler movie that goes straight to DVD,” Iovine said of Han’s campy take on the song, calling it a “stunt gone wrong.” “At the end of the day, Interscope has to spend a lot of money on somebody who wins this show, and that’s not it.” Han defended himself by saying, “I’m not trying to be a star; I’m just really happy where I am.” Elsewhere on the show, in a surprise birthday tribute to Steven Tyler, his Aerosmith cohort Joe Perry came out and played “Happy Birthday” for him, backed by the Idols. Tyler turns 64 on Monday. Also, controversy magnet Lana Del Rey performed her hit single “Video Games,” complete with a closing confetti shower, and season 10 third-place finisher Haley Reinhart returned to the “Idol” stage to perform her new single “Free.” What did you think about “Idol” on Thursday? Casablanca, The Bodyguard, or Titanic 3-D: Which Romantic Re-releases Are Worth Your Dollars?

Heads up, romantic drama die-hards: Movie theaters will be awash with tears in the next couple of weeks. Three epic — well, two epics and one epic-lite — love stories are being re-released for various questionable reasons, and in these challenging economic times it might not make sense to rush out and see all three. Here, then, are some points to consider before buying a ticket and travel-size tissues for Casablanca , The Bodyguard or Titanic . Casablanca , in which we fall in love with Ingrid Bergman’s twinkly eyes while she falls for Humphrey Bogart all over again, turns 70 this year. To celebrate, TCM is screening the film in select cities for one night only — today! — March 21 . The beloved classic has been re-mastered, so if you’ve gone a long stretch since seeing the film in a theater, it might be worth catching a newly polished version. TCM host Robert Osborne will introduce Casablanca along with a presentation on the making of the film and behind-the-scenes material. That’s not exactly a huge draw. The $12.50 might be better spent toward the special-edition DVD/Blu-ray release, due March 27, because despite being officially septuagenarian, the movie simply never gets old, and will always demand repeated viewing. Verdict: See it in theaters AND buy the Blu-ray. Hey, it’s a classic . Honoring both the legacy of sublime vocalist Whitney Houston and the 20th anniversary (in November) of her first film, Warner Bros. is bringing The Bodyguard back to theaters for a one-night stand March 28 . Is it opportunistic in the wake of her death last month? Sure. But the nostalgia wave for Houston’s body of work is still going strong, and the real opportunity is for fans to hear one of the most beautiful voices of modern pop music in a prime audio environment. It’s a chance to come close to seeing her onstage again. On the other hand, it would be much more appropriate to snark on the movie, as unconvincing lovebirds Houston and Kevin Costner build up tepid passion for one another, in the comfort of your own home. The Bodyguard is on Amazon and YouTube for the cost of a cup of coffee, and there are no fancy visual effects besides Houston’s gleaming smile to make it worth the big-screen treatment. [Note: Both the Casablanca and the Bodyguard events will be broadcast through Fathom Events , which projects simultaneously into networked theaters via satellite, so it’s hard to say what sort of picture quality you’ll be getting.] Verdict: Unless you’re a Bodyguard /Houston fanatic, skip it in theaters. You’re better off weeping over the Bodyguard soundtrack on repeat. Which brings us to Titanic 3-D , out April 6 . James Cameron considers the younger generation the target audience for the 3-D version of his 1997 masterpiece. Although watching Rose find her inner badass is thrilling, she’s competing with Katniss Everdeen for the moviegoers Cameron hopes to lure in, as The Hunger Games will be in its third weekend of pop culture and box office domination when Titanic hits. Not that Kate Winslet ’s moxie, or even her chemistry with Leonardo DiCaprio , is the main draw, of course. The real reasons to jump at the chance to see Titanic on the big screen are those hyper-real and well-paced ship-sinking scenes. Cameron went to great lengths and expense to produce a 3-D version for our viewing pleasure — though it turns out that the resulting darkness of the screen makes it a less-than-enjoyable experience , according to some critics who caught an early glimpse. It’s troubling that first-timers might watch this first-class love story unfold through a haze just so a couple chunks of iceberg shoot out at them, so it’s a good thing Paramount is also screening it in regular 2-D. It’s hard to justify giving Cameron more money at this point (two Avatar sequels is two too many), so a less costly 2-D option feels like a decent happy medium, one that also would introduce the film’s grandeur to a new audience in the best possible way. Verdict: See it in theaters if you’ve never let go. Follow Movieline on Twitter .

Jennifer Lawrence Lets Her Breasts Fall Out

I’m not really sure what the deal is with this Hunger Games business, I think it’s a book and now movie for teenage girls, but I know some quality cleavage when I see it. Here’s Jennifer Lawrence dropping some perky boobage at a book signing for the thing. I find it a little odd that she’s signing copies of a book she didn’t write. Shouldn’t she be signing DVD’s or movie posters or something? I guess with this much breasts hanging out she can sign whatever the hell she wants.

Finally, The Muppets Get a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Or the, uh, “Wocka Wocka” fame: “Several Muppets were on hand to receive the star including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Animal, Pepe, Sweetums, and Walter, the newest Muppet, who made his debut in Disney’s 2011 film,” reports a press release just over the transom at ML HQ. “The Muppets’ star is the 2,466th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and is located in front of the historic El Capitan Theatre.” Nice real estate! And nice timing — The Muppets is out on DVD and Blu-ray today. The honor comes 57 years after Kermit’s first TV appearance. No rush! And congrats to all. [Photo: Getty Images] Follow S.T. Inessential Essentials: Last Temptation of Christ on Blu-ray

Movieline is pleased to introduce Inessential Essentials, a regular feature about some of the most intriguing — if not necessarily most obvious — new home-viewing options on the market. We begin today with a film practically doomed by controversy a quarter-century ago, resurrected for DVD and finally given the treatment it truly deserves this week on Blu-ray. — Ed. What’s the Film : The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), new on Blu-ray via Criterion Collection Why it’s an Inessential Essential : Adapted from Nikos Kazantzakis’s novel by the same, The Last Temptation of Christ is a moving and heart-felt testament of religious faith. It’s also probably not the first film you’d think of when you think of when you think of Martin Scorsese’s filmography. Temptation follows Jesus of Nazareth (Willem Dafoe) in his long journey from looking at God’s presence as “the ultimate headache,” to quote Temptation screenwriter Paul Schrader, towards seeing death in the service of God as an act of divine mercy. The Last Temptation of Christ isn’t the only film of Scorsese’s to focus on a troubled protagonist’s spiritual crisis. Like several of Scorsese’s protagonists, Jesus gradually comes to understand the difference between how he can behave and how he should behave according to his moral principles. He’s a man first, and only by film’s end does he really become the messiah, too. Still, because of its sexual implications, the film was a source of major controversy when it was released in 1988 and even before then when Scorsese originally tried unsuccessfully to make The Last Temptation of Christ with Paramount Studios in 1983 on a considerably bigger budget. According to David Ehrenstein’s liner notes, Scorsese was told he could make the picture with a budget of $15-20 million. But then a letter-writing campaign from Christian fundamentalists stopped the 1983 production dead in its tracks. Scorsese would go on to make Temptation with a considerably smaller $7 million with Universal Studios. Nearly 25 years later, as comedian Billy Crystal “joked” during the most recent Oscars telecast, Scorsese is still always going to be the guy that did Goodfellas and other “crime pictures.” How the DVD/Blu Makes the Case for the Film : Predictably enough for a Criterion release, the Blu-ray features a number of exceptional special features, including a terrific audio commentary track that selectively alternates between Scorsese, Schrader, Dafoe and screenwriter Jay Cocks. The track is especially good since it only lets any one of these four talking heads speak when they have something worth saying, such as when Scorsese explains the background behind Mary Magdalene’s tattoos, or Cocks’s description of Scorsese’s filmmaking approach: “The simplest, most direct way is usually the most heart-felt, the way which technology can interfere the least in the way of the emotion.” Both the Criterion Collection’s DVD and Blu-Ray releases of The Last Temptation of Christ also feature a decent interview with Peter Gabriel, who scored the film. Gabriel talks a little about how he and Scorsese worked toward “avoid[ing] the clichés of Christ goes to the movies […] Marty had some strong opinions of some people he wanted me to integrate and whose work he wanted me to play with. I spent some time in the National Sound Archive doing some research and trying to educate myself a bit. And although I didn’t try and master Arabic scales, I was just trying to soak in some of the feelings and find key performers that could bring power and passion.” Other Interesting Trivia : Also according to Ehrenstein’s liner notes, director Franco Zeffirelli pulled his Young Toscanini from the 1988 Venice Film Festival line-up when he heard that Temptation would also be screening that year. Zeffirelli hadn’t yet seen Scorsese’s film when he made that appropriately theatrical gesture. But he still was outraged by Temptation , saying that it was “truly horrible and completely deranged.”

Kristen Stewart as a Vampire: First Look!!!

Earlier this week, the first photo from Breaking Dawn Part 2 hit the Internet. And it may have been a close-up of Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen , but let’s be honest: It wasn’t really all that revealing. Fortunately, a new image is here to rectify that. Taken from a feature on the special DVD handed out last month during a Twilight Saga-related event at Target, we’ve now gotten our first glimpse at Bella Swan as a vampire. Check it out below: “It’s strange,” the red-eyed, pale-skinned Bella tells her husband in the clip from which this shot is taken. “Physically I feel like I could demolish a tank. Mentally I feel just drained.” The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 hits theaters on November 16, 2012. Check out a sneak peek at the final installment now!
