It’s too late to stop WikiLeaks from publishing thousands more classified documents, nabbed from the Pentagon’s secret network. But the U.S. military is telling its troops to stop using CDs, DVDs, thumb drives and every other form of removable media — or risk a court martial. Maj. Gen. Richard Webber, commander of Air Force Network Operations, issued the Dec. 3 “Cyber Control Order” — obtained by Danger Room — which directs airmen to “immediately cease use of removable media on all systems, servers, and stand alone machines residing on SIPRNET,” the Defense Department’s secret network. Similar directives have gone out to the military’s other branches. “Unauthorized data transfers routinely occur on classified networks using removable media and are a method the insider threat uses to exploit classified information. To mitigate the activity, all Air Force organizations must immediately suspend all SIPRNET data transfer activities on removable media,” the order adds. It’s one of a number of moves the Defense Department is making to prevent further disclosures of secret information in the wake of the WikiLeaks document dumps. Pfc. Bradley Manning says he downloaded hundreds of thousands of files from SIPRNET to a CD marked “Lady Gaga” before giving the files to WikiLeaks. To stop that from happening again, an August internal review suggested that the Pentagon disable all classified computers’ ability to write to removable media. About 60 percent of military machines are now connected to a Host Based Security System, which looks for anomalous behavior. And now there’s this disk-banning order. One military source who works on these networks says it will make the job harder; classified computers are often disconnected from the network, or are in low-bandwidth areas. A DVD or a thumb drive is often the easiest way to get information from one machine to the next. “They were asking us to build homes before,” the source says. “Now they’re taking away our hammers.” The order acknowledges that the ban will make life trickier for some troops. “Users will experience difficulty with transferring data for operational needs which could impede timeliness on mission execution,” the document admits. But “military personnel who do not comply … may be punished under Article 92 of the Uniformed Code of Military Justice.” Article 92 is the armed forces’ regulation covering failure to obey orders and dereliction of duty, and it stipulates that violators “shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.” But to several Defense Department insiders, the steps taken so far to prevent another big secret data dump have been surprisingly small. “After all the churn…. The general perception is business as usual. I’m not kidding,” one of those insiders says. “We haven’t turned a brain cell on it.” Tape and disk backups, as well as hard drive removals, will continue as normal in the military’s Secure Compartmented Information Facilities, where top-secret information is discussed and handled. And removable drives have been banned on SIPRNET before. Two years ago, the Pentagon forbade the media’s use after the drives and disks helped spread a relatively unsophisticated worm onto hundreds of thousands of computers. The ban was lifted this February, after the worm cleanup effort, dubbed “Operational Buckshot Yankee,” was finally completed. Shortly thereafter, Manning says he started passing information to WikiLeaks. Specialists at the National Security Agency are looking for additional technical ways to limit, disable or audit military users’ actions. Darpa, the Pentagon’s leading-edge research arm, has launched an effort to “greatly increase the accuracy, rate and speed with which insider threats are detected … within government and military interest networks.” But, like all Darpa projects, this one won’t be ready to deploy for years — if ever. For now, the Pentagon is stuck with more conventional methods to WikiLeak-proof its networks. http://m.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/12/military-bans-disks-threatens-courts-marti… added by: ras_menelik

Blockbuster might want to put some extra polish on that new advertising campaign . There’s apparently a new service around the corner called “Flix On Stix” that uses a kiosk model similar to Redbox, only instead of getting a DVD, you simply plug in a USB thumb drive and download the movie rental in seconds. Maybe Redbox should start planning a new advertising campaign too? Or is this new technology destined to go obsolete almost as soon as it begins? Let’s weigh the pros and cons.

Steady yourselves, people of Earth: Justin Timberlake is on crutches. But as the singer-actor-pop demigod told me as he hobbled in for an in-depth chat alongside Social Network co-star/future Spider-Man Andrew Garfield last night, his injured leg may or may not be cause for concern — and thankfully, it didn’t stop him from making our late-night rendezvous.

A pain in the ass for someone with a job to do, films that open without screening for critics usually draw one of two responses: 1. Yes, that was probably a wise decision; or 2. Have a little faith, studio chickens! I’m not sure how a system that’s pushing Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford’s upcoming Cowboys and Aliens would assume that critics won’t get a film like The Warrior’s Way ; it’s been a mad, mixed-up genre world for some time now. Yet if writer/director Sngmoo Lee’s feature debut isn’t the first revisionist udon western, surely it will wind up being close to the only one. A shame, in a way, because I suspect a little company would only confirm that it’s also one of the best.

Once Thanksgiving is over, It’s a Wonderful Life season officially begins. But by the time director Frank Capra ventured to Bedford Falls, he had already made one of the greatest Christmas movies ever: Meet John Doe , which gets a “70th Anniversary Ultimate Collectors Edition” release this week from VCI Entertainment. And like many of Capra’s little-guy-against-the-corporations movies, it feels more relevant than ever.

Director DJ Scoob Doo tells MTV News third installment in DVD series is being expanded to capture Wayne’s life post-prison. By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Rahman Dukes Lil Wayne Photo: Chris Graythen/Getty Images Lil Wayne has kept a low profile since emerging from prison last month, quietly recording again and showing up at a handful of sporting events. But the Cash Money superstar has been very productive: He’s “93 percent done” with his next project, Tha Carter IV, according to Lil Wayne insider DJ Scoob Doo . Scoob has been with Wayne every step of the way since his release — from New York to Las Vegas and Miami — capturing the moments for “The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 3,” the ongoing DVD series that documents life behind the scenes for the martian MC. The DVD was scheduled for release earlier this year, but Scoob decided to pull back and wait until Wayne was free. The project is expected to see the light of day once Wayne’s LP is finished. “I was planning to put that out while Wayne was away, that was the traditional outlook of it,” Scoob told MTV News. “But Wayne didn’t see the ‘I’m Single’ video. That’s like my partner in crime with this, so to [have] put it out without him seeing [the video], it proves everything — he knows that was a good product. But it’s kinda like putting an album out without him listening to it.” The rapper and his videographer recently sat down and watched all of the clips Scoob shot, which subsequently made their way onto the Net while Weezy served out his sentence. The batch included “I’m Single,” “We Be Steady Mobbin’ ” and the “Pop Dat” videos. The last one, “Pop Dat,” brought home the importance of the project for Wayne. The clip features footage of the Birdman going to visit him on Rikers Island, fans holding up “Free Weezy” signs and more. As a result, “The Nino Brown Story, Pt. 3” has swelled to a larger production, set to encompass material that follows Wayne in the period leading up to his imprisonment right through his post-prison return to the stage during a surprise performance with Drake . “It’s telling a story, and the story is so much greater now,” Scoob explained. “It’s kinda like you’re trying to make a TV show episode off of a major motion picture. You can’t do it, you can’t do it. You can do it, but it’s gonna have to be continued. So, right now, it’s like we on ‘Nino Brown, 17,’ if you will, just to put in perspective of how much video footage we have. How much content we have, how much on a different space we are professional-wise, working together-wise.” What do you want to see on the next “Nino Brown” DVD? Let us know in the comments! Under the radar of most people — not including New Beverly Cinema programmer Phil Blankenship, who brought this film to my attention when he booked it as a midnight movie a few months ago — Standing Ovation (now available at Amazon.com) snuck in and out of theaters this summer. But this shrieky kids’ musical isn’t merely a would-be High School Musical ; it’s the kind of delicious disaster you were hoping Burlesque was going to be.

In response to the recent economic downturn, the US government has lent a helping hand to numerous homegrown industries. But most people laughed off Hustler founder Larry Flint’s bid for a porn industry bailout. While such a bailout would’ve proven politically disastrous, the industry is indeed experiencing desperate times. DVD sales have dropped 30% and pay-per-view sales are down 50% since the mid-2000s. http://www.theblogismine.com/2010/11/30/the-porn-industry-vs-the-economy-infogra… added by: theblogismine
