On DVD: What Reality TV Could Learn From Crumb

Truly, reality TV is too timid a whore to tackle the real American dysfunctional family — the kind that breeds crime and weird sexual compulsions and suicides in cluttered, unkempt houses on the not-so-hot side of town. I knew kids that came from those families, and chances are so did you. No, for this you need an indie documentary, and Terry Zwigoff’s famous, acclaimed Crumb (1995), now out in a tricked-out package from Criterion, may be the best film ever made about that creepy edge of American life.

‘Avatar’ Star Stephen Lang Talks Crazy Fans, Villains And Na’vi Sex

‘I get a lot of people coming up to me and saying, ‘I really hate you,’ ‘ actor says of his villainous character. By Eric Ditzian Stephen Lang Photo: MTV News Nine months after “Avatar” first came out and Stephen Lang found himself in the middle of a globe-blanketing PR campaign, the 58-year-old actor is getting a kick out of doing it all over again. Following the $2.4 billion success of its original release, James Cameron’s “Avatar” is headed back to theaters on Friday, August 27, and Lang is back doing the interview circuit, amiable as always, in stark contrast to his scenery-chewing, do-not-cross-me villain in the 3-D blockbuster, Colonel Miles Quaritch. Stopping by the MTV newsroom recently, Lang chatted about the new footage in the “Avatar” special edition , how his career has changed in the last year and some of the crazy fans he encounters these days. MTV : How’s it feel to be back in the world of Pandora? Stephen Lang : Everybody’s entitled to a victory lap! Above and beyond that, there has been this hankering for more information about this world that Jim created, and Jim is responsive to that and excited to bring back some of the footage it was probably painful for him to cut in the first place. MTV : Have you gone back and seen the new footage? Lang : Yesterday, I viewed all the new stuff. I was surprised at how emotional it was, just to reenter the world and to be reminded what an extraordinary period in my life this has been. I’ve been doing other things and “Avatar” subsided for a while and it’s been a lot of fun for it to rise up again. MTV : Is there any new footage from Colonel Quaritch to look forward to? Lang : There are bits and pieces of me. There’s a little bit more of my fighting, there’s a little bit more of my black-heartedness. There’s still plenty of Quaritch scenes that are somewhere else. MTV : Yeah, I know you guys filmed a ton of stuff way back when. Were you hoping any of that got picked and given the finishing treatment? Lang : I think that several scenes like that may well be on the DVD that comes out with lots of additional things. What Jim wanted to do here is showcase the planet itself — the creatures, the landscape. You see some creatures that you hadn’t seen before, and they’re stunning. There’s a love scene. MTV : I was going to ask you about that — the extended Na’vi sex scene. Lang : There’s an extended Na’vi sex scene, but that doesn’t cover it. It’s a very sensual and sensitive and sort of erotic scene. It’s the ultimate blue movie, you dig what I’m saying? But there’s no sex scene between Quaritch and [Sigourney Weaver’s] Grace or anyone else, which is unfortunate. MTV : How have things changed for you, personally and professionally, since the movie came out? Lang : I don’t think that personally they’ve changed so much. I’m pretty set or formed. I’ve been kicking around a long time. I think I probably am happier than I was. I feel quite satisfied. I think every actor wants to be part of something that can be considered a piece of cinema in a significant way, and I feel that way with “Avatar.” I think professionally it certainly has goosed things for me. There are more interesting opportunities. MTV : Are you getting a lot of the villain roles? Lang : Some villains come across my desk. I read them. Of course, after doing Quaritch, who I admit is the villain of the piece, you tend to compare everything to that, and I don’t want to repeat myself, or I don’t want to do a pale reflection or imitation of myself. I like to think I have range as an actor. I’d really like to get the girl. And by “get the girl,” I don’t mean kill her! MTV : Have you had any interactions with wacky fans? Anyone screaming at you on the street, “You’re not in Kansas anymore”? Lang : I get a lot of people coming up to me and saying, “I really hate you.” And they say it in the nicest possible way and I accept it. It’s the people who come up to you and say, “I really liked your character. Man, he was right!” Those are the ones you worry about. Why the Lost Epilogue Doesn’t Ruin the Show

The complete sixth season of Lost hits DVD and Blu-ray today, meaning critics, haters and contrarians alike can have another shot at the series and its controversial finale. Stoking that flame is the pièce de résistance of the release, a 12-minute series epilogue titled “The New Man in Charge” that leaked earlier this month . The epilogue is receiving a certain amount of flack while simultaneously being derided by as possibly “ruining” the series. Which would be true except for the fact that it’s not.

Bedbug Panic Grips NYC Multiplexes!

The following is presented largely without comment because I am too busy sealing my doors, duct-taping my pants and shirt tight at the ends and renouncing public moviegoing forever : “[A] new division of bloodthirsty bedbugs has sacked the AMC Empire 25 multiplex in Times Square. A moviegoer who requested anonymity tells us that 30 minutes into [Sunday] night’s screening of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World , she was ‘covered in bites.’ [… T]he AMC on 125th is fighting a bedbug infestation as well.” And this is how I become a DVD reviewer. Jennifer Aniston’s Cute Little Booty Profile

Here’s Jennifer Aniston out promoting her latest crappy movie, she should just start her own straight to DVD production company and cut out the middle man. Anyhow, she actually looks pretty damn hot, I’m impressed, she normally somehow manages to make every picture of her look so boring. Not this time. Ok, they’re a little boring, but she’s giving us a nice profile shot of her cute little butt in a short skirt so I’ll take it. more pictures of Jennifer Aniston here

Mel B is a Monster who Walks the Street of the Day

I hate guys who talk about when they jerk off. I just find it irritating conversation, not cuz it’s gay or cuz it turns me on, but because I don’t really care about when you’ve lowered yourself to your carnal urges and found a quiet and private corner to go at yourself like some kind of monkey in the fucking zoo. I don’t know why anyone would ever talk to their buddies about that shit. It’s just weird….that was until today, because back in 1997 when I had very few options cuz of no internet, no DVD or VHS player and no magazines, I jerked off to Mel B’s tits in the Spice Girl videos. We have gone a long way from being able to get off to some 28 year old’s hard nipples in a green tank top to now only being able to get off to throat fucking in circus costume porn cuz I’ve been desensitized….or maybe it’s cuz Mel B looks like a fucking monster and couldn’t keep me mesmorized with her titties…but the good news is that as fetishes change…maybe monster looking women will be the new throat fucking. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

30 Seconds To Mars Save Souls In ‘Closer To The Edge’ Video

‘Yes, this is a cult,’ says video that aims to capture fans’ perspective of the live 30STM experience. By James Montgomery 30 Seconds to Mars’ “Closer to the Edge” Photo: EMI With their brand new “Closer to the Edge” video — which premiered on Monday (August 16) — 30 Seconds to Mars have joined a special fraternity. For about as long as there have been rock videos, there have also been “road videos,” grand testaments to the highs and lows, the triumphs and tragedies, the sheer excitement and terrifying monotony that comes with being a touring rock-and-roll band. Documenting your life on the bus is as much a rite of passage as getting your first platinum plaque (or bedding your first groupie), and as such, basically every rock act worth their salt has, at some point, released a road video … and then released it again on the “Live” DVD. Though, in keeping with pretty much everything they do, 30STM have taken the concept to dizzying, unabashedly all-encompassing heights. Though road videos feature plenty of live footage (as does “Edge”), they are rarely — if ever — about the live experience. Rather, they are about the band themselves, the three or four dudes who sleep on bunks, sign autographs, eat at all-night diners and gaze longingly out the window of their bus. The fans are just part of the background … the occasional slow-motion shot or the supportive arms that keep the lead singer aloft when he crowd surfs. “Closer to the Edge” is different because it is darn-near 100 percent about the fans themselves: their lives and loves and fears, and how all of those things motivated them to attend a 30STM show in the first place. They are the stars, they are the main attraction. The members of the band are basically secondary characters in the thing. Even Jared Leto’s foot-high pink Mohawk. The video — directed by Leto, under the nom-de-film Bartholomew Cubbins — opens with testimonials from sad-eyed 30STM fans, espousing their views on life (“My philosophy is: Don’t regret anything you do … because in the end, it makes you who you are”). Each of them is alone in their own particular way, it would seem, though, through the music of 30 Seconds to Mars, they find a space in which they can coexist with others just like them. They may be outcasts in their high schools or towns, but at a 30STM show, they are anything but. They are, as a title card in the video puts it, part of “The Family.” And that message of inclusion is driven home in a series of stats the video throws at us (“27 Countries. 89 Cities. 1 Band. And All 1,363,930 of You”) and the message, “Yes, This Is a Cult.” Provided you are not curdled with cynicism, it’s a rather amazing idea. 30 Seconds to Mars are less of a touring rock band than they are a barnstorming ministry. They aim to uplift, to inspire, to save, and “Closer to the Edge” is their document of that mission. Sure, there are moments that sort of make you snicker — the sheer bombast of the entire thing, the fact that this is a “film … presented by 30 Seconds to Mars,” the image of Leto’s pink Mohawk peering contemplatively over the Grand Canyon — but there’s no denying the power of seeing tens of thousands of fans finding a simultaneous salvation, of a crowd of individuals becoming one. It’s what rock and roll is supposed to be about, really: inclusion. What do you think of the new 30 Seconds to Mars video? Share your own reviews in the comments below. Kanye West Says ‘Power’ Video ‘Basically A Trailer’ For Longer Clip

Chicago MC also calls his VMA stage-crashing incident ‘in poor taste,’ on New York radio. By Mawuse Ziegbe Kanye West Photo: Foc Kan/ Getty Images Kanye West dared to go where few rappers had gone before when he ditched his spit-fire lyricism for Auto-Tune-filtered vocals on his last album, 808s and Heartbreak. Now, in the lead-up to his upcoming album, the Chicago MC is pioneering the way hip-hop videos are made and consumed with his “moving painting” clip, “Power.” West, however, says that the 90-second video, which invokes cultural references from the Renaissance period to Greek mythology, is just a teaser for a much more ambitious project. “I’m working on a film idea for the movie now that you saw. The ‘Power’ piece was basically like a trailer or moving poster or moving portrait. It’s just a different take on the way to do videos,” Yeezy told New York radio station Power 105.1 on Thursday. The MC, who, as a rising rapper one flexed his painting and drawing skills for MTV , said the longer version will be packaged as a piece of kinetic art. “Actually, [we’re] doing a 40-minute version of it. It’s just a piece of moving art. It’s made for you to project it on your wall. We’re gonna do a DVD package where it will be kids’ first piece of actual art that they can buy and have in their home,” West explained. ‘Ye then described how he imagines the glacial narrative of “Power” will play out in the longer version: “Just picture the dude with the sword, two minutes of him. [He’s in] slow-motion, about to cut my head off. Then the girl just crawling on the ground, like slow-motion,” West said. The less-than-two-minute-long “Power” clip has stirred confusion among some fans who thought that the 90-second video was mistakenly cut short. However, ‘Ye explained that the technologically involved production process meant that the video would have to cut down on running time in order to bulk up on visual interest. “It just couldn’t have been longer. If it had been any longer, it wouldn’t even [have] been out by now,” ‘Ye laughed. “I see on Twitter [people are] like, ‘Man I’m waiting for the whole video,’ I’m like, ‘OK, it’s gonna be a long wait.’ ” Making the actual “Power” song was also very time-intensive and ‘Ye said that he spent thousands of hours tweaking the record. “A song like ‘Power’ took 5,000 thousand hours, like literally 5,000 man-hours to do this one record. That’s the amount of time I was putting into every song on the album,” West revealed. His latest single, “See Me Now,” was also a time-consuming enterprise. “The joint that we just dropped today, with Beyonc
