Gang Starr’s DJ Premier Discusses Estranged Relationship With Guru

‘We never disbanded the group,’ Premier says of his late groupmate in a Vibe.com interview. By Jayson Rodriguez Gang Starr’s Guru and DJ Premier Photo: Gregg Delman/ MTV.com Gang Starr’s DJ Premier opened up about his estranged relationship with Guru and much more in an intimate interview with Vibe.com that posted on Wednesday (April 28) morning. The legendary producer’s comments are the latest in a series of remarks in which he’s incrementally opened up about his late groupmate and the controversy surrounding his death last week . Premier revealed that he hadn’t spoken with Guru in six years, mainly due to his problems with alcohol. “It was March 30, 2004,” he told writer Keith Murphy. “April 1 was the last email I received from him and I just found it in my computer. We were pretty much going at it about him straightening his life up with the drinking and everything … just getting himself together. Because talent wise, drinking or sober, he was always on point in the lab. He could lay down his vocals with no problem and he always wrote his rhymes dope. When he wrote his rhymes on page they were so messy [Laughs]. I used to ask him, ‘How can you even recite the verses and flow?’ He would be in the booth turning the paper upside down while he’s still rhyming and without having to punch in.” Despite his distance from Guru in recent years, which an associate of both men, rapper Black Jesus , characterized as minor and noted Guru’s vices as a detrimental influence, Premier said he maintained a regular relationship with the Gang Starr MC’s family. “I talk to them all the time,” he explained. “His father, his sister Patricia; the only one I haven’t spoken to is his younger sister. But they all know me well. His brother Harry … They all know me. And they know this is all some bullshit [the controversy with Solar ]. They been a little separated from Guru once he decided to move off of Gang Starr. He got distant from everybody. It had been six years since I talked to him. I was trying to get the truth about whether he was in the hospital after he had the cardiac arrest. I called his parents. Guru’s mother and my mother were pen pals for a long time. I remember the day he had the cardiac arrest. I called the house and I heard Guru’s father’s voice like ‘Chris … Man, it’s good to hear your voice.’ Now if he had some strange feeling about me he would have been like, ‘Son, I can’t talk to you right now.’ But that wasn’t the case. It felt so good speaking to him. I was able to get the real deal of what was going on. They know me well enough to know that I’m not some stranger that needs information to be held back from me. Why do I have to make it up? I don’t have an agenda.” Much has been made about Guru’s farewell letter, issued after his death by Solar, a producer he worked with in recent years while on hiatus from Gang Starr. In the letter, Guru allegedly referred to Premier simply as his “former DJ” and refused to mention his Gang Starr partner by name. Fans cried foul over the letter and asserted Solar misrepresented Guru by penning the message himself, a claim he denied to MTV News. Premier took the high road, however, when he issued a touching statement honoring his fallen friend. Last Friday, though, Premier spoke out against Solar during his Sirius XM radio show, where he put on a “salute” to Guru . The DJ repeatedly assailed Solar throughout the two-hour set and refused to acknowledge him by name. Preemo told Vibe.com he would “love to see that letter” and “would love to see the handwriting. Because I know Guru’s handwriting like the back of my hand with all the bills we had to pay together. I know it’s not him.” The DJ was noncommittal about Gang Starr’s future. He said the men discussed a seventh album years ago, but nothing ever came to fruition. Premier hinted at a possible DVD project featuring vintage footage, but would only say his focus is to honor their combined legacy, which he said Guru would want since the MC never completely removed himself from the partnership. “The main thing is we never dissolved our Gang Starr contract,” Premier said. “We are still signed to each other. We never disbanded the group. If Guru really wanted to super-dead it he would have said, ‘Yo, I want out.’ And I still would have tried to convince him to stay. We are still Gang Starr.” Share your memories of Guru and Gang Starr in the comments below. Avatar Breaks More Records

Get James Cameron another house! Fresh on DVD and Blu-ray, Avatar annihilated the records for most single-day Blu-ray copies sold — besting previous champ, The Dark Knight , 1,500,000 to 600,000 — and single-day home video sales total. It also sparked a run on Blu-ray player sales, as retailers said that many customers purchased Avatar and a player simultaneously. No truth the rumor that the Blu-ray disc also turned water into wine, but 20th Century Fox does have to save something for the special edition. Be patient! [ LAT /Hero Complex ]

Wal-Mart are the Porn Peddlers of the Day

Some woman claims she bought Sherlock Holmes at Wal-Mart but the DVD was actually a porn movie… So either Wal-Mart are porn peddlers. The DVD manufacturer are pranking America, even though shit woulda been funnier if it was in “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” or some Christian documentary shit that only fundamentalist religious people would watch. Or the bitch is a lying fucking pervert with multiple personality disorder or some shit and doesn’t realize that the wholesome mother in her isn’t always so wholesome, but instead gets off watching bitches get fucked up the ass…and anyway you dice it, porn sold in America’s happiest store where the lowest price is the law, is amazing.

Justin Bieber Rules Billboard Charts For Third Week

New MGMT, Coheed and Cambria albums see strong debuts. By Gil Kaufman There’s just no holding down Justin Bieber . The pint-size Canadian pop sensation will hold onto the #1 slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart next week, thanks to another 92,000 in sales for his My World 2.0 album, which has sold more than 760,000 copies in its first month. The competition wasn’t even really close, though hipster duo MGMT had a relatively strong showing for their difficult second album, Congratulations, which debuts at #2 (66,000), according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The other debut in the top 10 comes from complicated rockers Coheed and Cambria , who notch a #5 showing for Year of the Black Rainbow (51,000). It’s the concept-album-loving MTV Musical March Madness champs’ highest-ever chart debut. The rest of the top 10 found ACM darlings Lady Antebellum moving up a notch with Need You Now (65,000), the year’s best-selling album so far, with more than 1.7 million copies moved. That’s followed by Usher with Raymond v. Raymond (#4, 64,000), Now 33 (45,000) and Lady Gaga ‘s The Fame (32,000). Ke$ha ‘s Animal returns to the top 10 (up eight spots to #8, 31,000), with Monica’s Still Standing (#9, 30,000) and Bieber’s debut, My World (#10, 30,000) close at its heels. Just outside the top 10, guitar legend Jeff Beck hits #11 with Emotion & Commotion (26,000). Former 10,000 Maniacs singer Natalie Merchant lands at #17 with her latest solo album, Leave Your Sleep. Former “American Idol” finalist Jason Castro is right behind at #18 with his self-titled full-length debut (#18, 20,000), and Gucci Mane ‘s Burrrprint 2 mixtape hit #19 (19,000). Further down the line, “Legally Blonde — The Musical” star Laura Bell Bundy hits #28 with her Achin’ & Shakin’ country album (15,000). The self-titled debut from former Guns ‘N Roses guitarist Slash had a short stay in the top 10, dropping 13 slots to #16 in week two (22,000), while Erykah Badu ‘s New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh falls 11 to #20 in week three (19,000). Fans were seemingly not feeling Madonna ‘s Sticky & Sweet Tour CD/DVD pack, as the live collection plummets 47 spots in week two to #57 (8,000) as sales dropped by more than 70 percent. Adam Lambert ‘s return to “American Idol” as a mentor did wonders for his five-month-old debut, For Your Entertainment, which rockets up 41 spots to #35 (13,000, up 121 percent). Next week’s contenders include the comeback album from Cypress Hill , the “Glee” Madonna soundtrack and AC/DC ‘s “Iron Man 2” compilation. My Chemical Romance’s New Album Is Not Called The Midnight Curfew

Unauthorized biographical DVD about MCR was mistakenly labeled as band’s new LP. By James Montgomery My Chemical Romance Photo: Reprise Over the weekend, My Chemical Romance fans got a bit of a shock when a page on MTV.com appeared, listing both a title and release date for the band’s long-in-the-works new album. According to the page, MCR would return on June 29 with The Midnight Curfew, a new album on a new label: Pride Music. This seemed odd for a number of reasons, chiefly the fact that frontman Gerard Way had recently been tweeting about the title of the album, hinting that he would be announcing it “in a special way this time … maybe some sort of event.” Info about the new album’s title and release date quickly began spreading, until bassist Mikey Way took to his Twitter to defuse the whole thing, writing that “the new album is not titled Midnight Curfew. That is an unauthorized biography DVD that we have nothing to do with. Buyer beware.” And so, it is. The “Curfew” DVD can actually be pre-ordered on Amazon.com right now. So how did “Curfew” end up on MTV.com? Well, data for upcoming releases is automatically pulled from AllMusic.com , which does, in fact, have a page listing for the DVD. MTV News’ e-mails to AllMusic seeking comment were not returned by press time. Digging a little further — using the product code for the DVD listed on AllMusic — it turns out that “Curfew” is being actually being released through Chrome Dreams , a U.K.-based media company that sells biographical books, DVDs and CDs of everyone from Lady Gaga to 50 Cent. Under their “Pride Music” label, they’ve recently released a two-disc “unauthorized” look at the making of Guns ‘N Roses Chinese Democracy album and a retrospective DVD about Kate Bush’s Hounds of Love. By press time, the company has not responded to an e-mail seeking clarification and/or comment about “The Midnight Curfew.” And through all this, we still don’t know the actual title (or release) date for My Chem’s new album. E-mails to MCR’s actual label, Reprise Records, were not returned. Related Artists My Chemical Romance

Ashley Tisdale Looks Good For A Change

Here’s Ashley Tisdale bustin’ a move in her little short shorts and sports bra on the set of something called Hellcats . I don’t know what that is, but I get the feeling that the words straight to DVD will be involved. Anyhow, I’m actually a little surprised that Ashley looks this good. I can’t believe I just said that, she’s normally down right ugly, but this time is different for some reason. I must be distracted by the outfit or all the ‘White Russians’ I’ve been drinking.

Lil Wayne’s ‘I’m Single’ Video Gets A Boost From Birdman, DJ Scoob Doo

Clip premieres Sunday on MTV Jams and MTV2’s ‘Sucker Free Countdown.’ Lil Wayne Photo: Nino Brown The Birdman checked in with MTV News Thursday to tell us he was in full support of Lil Wayne’s new video that will be debuting this Sunday on MTV Jams and MTV2’s “Sucker Free Countdown.” “Y’all check out the new video from Junior,” Birdman said in a clip. ” ‘Nino Brown 3,’ ‘I’m Single.’ Fresh off the G-4. Moolah! Also watch out for the ‘Godfather Part 1’ DVD .” DJ Scoob Doo directed the new Wayne video (the song is one of the cuts from his No Ceilings mixtape relased at the end of last year), and the clip is part performance, part plot. “[Wayne’s girl was mad that] he didn’t make it home in time,” Scoob said of the story line. “He stayed out all night. That’s the idea I got with the song — it brought me back to watching the film ‘A Thin Line Between Love and Hate.’ Me growing up watching Martin [Lawrence], it was epic, it was a funny movie. I loved the cinematography in it. [Writing the script for the video], that was me being a fan of that movie and good music and putting it together. “Tammy Torres is the mistress,” Scoob added. “She’s the reason Wayne didn’t make it home — the reason why he’s single for the night. Natasha is the one who has heartache. She’s scorned to the point where she turns crazy and deranged. You don’t wanna cross that thin line.” Are you excited to see Lil Wayne’s new video?
