‘Limitless’: Five Secrets Revealed

Director Neil Burger takes us behind the scenes of Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro’s new thriller. By Eric Ditzian Robert DeNiro and Bradley Cooper in “Limitless” Photo: Universal Pictures There is a scene midway through “Limitless” in which Abbie Cornish’s character is running through a park, attempting to escape a guy intent on gutting her like a fish. Unsure how to get away, she swallows a black-market drug called NZT — a little pill allowing her to access 100 percent of her mind — and scans the park for possible weapons: a pair of gardening sheers or a baseball bat, perhaps? Then she sees a little girl on ice skates off in the distance. Bingo! She races toward the rink as the evil dude gives chase, then picks up the girl and uses her ice skates to slice her enemy’s face. It’s a wackily kinetic scene in a thriller filled with such moments. The only problem for director Neil Burger was casting the girl to take part in the madness. “Luckily, the stunt people were completely game to offer up their child to be thrown through the air!” Burger laughed in a recent conversation with MTV News. And that, it turns out, is how Piper Brown, daughter of Jill Brown (whose stunt credits include “The Green Hornet” and “I Am Legend”), made her big-screen debut. “It was our first day of shooting, which is an insane way to begin,” Burger said. We had to do it in one day with 200 extras on the ice, plus the crew, and we’re just powering through everyone with cameras and cranes.” That’s just one of the untold stories behind the production of “Limitless” we picked up during a recent conversation with Burger. Before checking out the film, which hit theaters Friday (March 18), check out four more “Limitless” secrets revealed: Why Is NZT a Clear Pill? In creating a fictional drug for the big screen, Burger and his team could have gone in any direction. NZT could have been something you swallow or smoke or, heck, even something used as a suppository reminiscent of a troubling scene in “Trainspotting.” But following the book on which the movie is based, they stuck with a pill. What, however, would the pill that Bradley Cooper’s character gets hooked on look like? “Right up to the end, we were thinking about what this pill would be,” Burger explained. “Sometimes we thought it’d have these beveled edges or a different colored center, but it started to look like a hundred other things you’ve seen, from a Lifesaver to Skittles. Then we stumbled onto one that was clear, and I knew it was just perfect. It sums up exactly what it does for him.” What Exactly Does NZT Do? Though the story is based on a novel by Alan Glynn, it was up to Burger to “invent the rules of the drug,” as he put it. How does it affect Cooper’s Eddie Morra? What would happen if Eddie suddenly couldn’t get his fix? “I worked on it on my own, because I had to become an authority on it with the actors and crew,” he added. “It became that you don’t get high or wired or stoned. You were just clear and knew what to do and how to get it done.” Along those lines, Burger didn’t refer to any existing drugs, because there’s nothing on Earth like NZT. “I didn’t do research. I just decided what I wanted the drug to be. I wanted Eddie to become the perfect version of himself. I wanted him to remember everything he’s ever seen. It’s not that it makes him into Superman. It makes him fearless, and he’s able to access information instantaneously.” How Did They Pull Off Those Ultra-Long Zooming Shots? Often when Eddie is on NZT, the camera pushes through the cityscape in a long, seemingly continuous shot, pushing forward for miles without stop. It’s a very cool visual effect, one unlike we’ve ever seen. How the heck did they pull off what Burger calls “infinity zooms”? “I started looking at fractals,” he told us. “I liked the idea that each part they’re made up of is a mirror of the whole. And I looked at fractal zooms, where you push into the fractal, going from shape to shape, an Escher-like movement. That was how Eddie’s mind worked: these microcosms that mirrored a larger sense of the world. I wanted to bring that idea into the city and have it be like a fractal zoom. It was a great way to show how he perceived space and time. “So I had a very clear idea of how I wanted to do it, and nobody could figure out how to do it,” he explained. “I found a visual-effects company that finally figured it out — and it’s a bit of a secret, because it’s a new thing. We were able to move the camera through the city and then visually stitch it all together, but you can’t see where the seams are.” Why Did They Change Eddie’s Job From Copywriter to Novelist? In Glynn’s book, Eddie is a struggling copywriter. In the book, he’s a struggling novelist. Why was it important to change his job? “It was important to make him an artist with aspirations toward greatness, and it just wasn’t happening. A copywriter just wasn’t going to communicate that,” Burger said. “He had to have the big dream. We all want to be a rock star or a pro basketball player or Warren Buffet, but then when push comes to shove, we aren’t those things — we can’t be those things. He was just one more guy who had this big dream, and he couldn’t achieve it, even though he wanted to. NZT could let him achieve that dream, and then a whole lot more.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Limitless.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

‘Battle: Los Angeles’ Tops Friday Box Office

Alien invasion flick bests ‘Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Rango’ to claim top spot, while animated ‘Mars Needs Moms’ tanks. By Shawn Adler Michelle Rodriguez in “Battle: Los Angeles” Photo: Sony Pictures It showcases an epic battle between aliens and humans, but it turns out that the biggest winner of the weekend isn’t going to be Aaron Eckhart or the extra-terrestrials he faces in “Battle: Los Angeles,” but an entirely different, third combatant: the film itself. Led by an all-star cast headlined by the “Thank You For Smoking” star, “Battle: Los Angeles” topped all comers at the Friday night box office with an estimated $13.5 million from 3,417 theaters. The story of a surprise war waged by aliens for control of Earth, the flick should eek out approximately $40 for the weekend and another number one opening for the star of “The Dark Knight” in his first return to big budget action. The secret to the film’s success? Not treating an alien invasion movie like an alien invasion movie, director Jonathan Liebesman told MTV News . “This is a more down and dirty alien movie,” Liebesman said. “This is like if [‘Bourne Supremacy’ director] Paul Greengrass got a camera, saw some aliens, and shot it from the point of view of a platoon. It’s literally like ‘Black Hawk Down,’ if there were aliens in there. Like Iraqi war footage, but with aliens running around.” You’d be forgiven, meanwhile, for saying of the second place film, “My, what a big gross you have,” as the Brothers Grimm by way of Stephanie Meyer revisionist fairy tale “Red Riding Hood” scared up $5.7 million to claw its way near the top. The Catherine Hardwick directed and Amanda Seyfried starring film may seem to be similar to that little Kristen Stewart movie, but that doesn’t mean it’s just “Twilight” with a cape, Seyfried told MTV. “It’s a bummer that that’s what’s happening,” Seyfried told us . “I mean, it does surround a girl coming of age in a love triangle, but that’s a lot of movies. The truth is, it’s an entirely different story.” In third place, last weekend’s winner “Rango” managed a very healthy $5.5 million. The Johnny Depp starring flick about a chameleon who finds himself leading a small desert town as sheriff should bring its total to approximately $70 million by weekend’s close. In fourth place, “The Adjustment Bureau” starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt managed a $3.4 million Friday. The biggest disappointment of the week was “Mars Needs Moms,” the newest animated film from Disney. Using motion capture technology and based on a story from Pulitzer Prize winner Berkeley Breathed, the reportedly expensive film managed just $1.8 million Friday and a fifth place finish. Among other films, “Beastly” scored $1.6 million for a sixth place finish, while “Just Go With It” managed an eighth place finish and $1.2 million. The Adam Sandler led comedy should pass $100 million sometime early next week. Rounding out the rest of the top ten, “Hall Pass” earned $1.5 million to come in seventh, “The King’s Speech” grabbed $1 million to finish ninth, and “Unknown” ran away with $975,000 to land in tenth.

We’re going to see a lot of alien attacks onscreen this year. A few days ago I posted a video by José Francisco Salgado showing the sky over telescopes in Chile. He’s just put up another one, this time showing the motion of the sky over several observatories: “Sidereal Motion” . Sidereal motion is literally the movement of the stars; the apparent rising and setting caused by the rotation of the Earth. Ashley Hebert: The Next Bachelorette?

She’s still alive as one of three finalists on this season of The Bachelor. But has Ashley Hebert already been tapped to star on The Bachelorette this summer? According to Reality Steve’s Twitter . For those unfamiliar with Steve, he is the WikiLeaks of Bachelor spoilers . No one knows how this stuff gets out, but it ends up on his blog and he is good. How on Earth was a contestant who isn’t even eliminated yet named the star of the sequel? We have no idea, and we obviously can’t confirm this now. But odds are still pretty high that Ashley Hebert , the perky dental student and pride of small town Madawaska, Maine, will be the next Bachelorette . If true, it’s not shocking she didn’t win The Bachelor . Brad has stronger connections with Chantal O’Brien (the rumored winner) and Emily Maynard. What is surprising is that Emily, with stunning looks and a touching story that seemed destined to land her the starring role, is not The Bachelorette . Just the same, Ash is no slouch herself. She’s down-to-earth, smart, fun and cute as they come. What do you think of the move? Vote below … Would Ashley make a good Bachelorette?

The largest of the temblors, at 4.3 magnitude, hit at 2:13 a.m. Friday. It followed a 4.0-magnitude event at 11 p.m. Thursday. No damage has been reported from any of the quakes, all centered near the town of Greenbrier in Faulkner County, CNN affiliate KARK reports. Residents reported hearing a boom at the time of Friday morning’s quake, KARK reported. The earthquake swarm is reminiscent of a swarm that hit the area last fall. More than 500 were recorded in less than a month. Mother nature isn’t happy with us, and it seems like she’s intent on letting us know exactly how pissed off she is. ‘I Am Number Four’: The Reviews Are In!

Sci-fi flick might not be treading new ground, but it’s sure to make a box-office impact. By Eric Ditzian Alex Pettyfer and Teresa Palmer in “I Am Number Four” Photo: DreamWorks This weekend brings the year’s first major sci-fi release to the multiplex, and audiences should be flocking to it after weeks of tepid rom-coms and half-baked horror flicks. “I Am Number Four,” though weakly reviewed, stands to win the top spot at the box office over the four-day holiday. “Unknown” and “Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son,” alas, don’t stand a chance. Which one is right for you? Or, perhaps, is now the time to avoid the new offerings and hit the Oscar faves ahead of next weekend’s Academy Awards? Check out what the critics are saying about “I Am Number Four” and decide for yourself. The Story “Since space creatures don’t arrive with the traditional backstories of vampires and werewolves, the story of extraterrestrial conflict and teenage longing requires a little setup. John Smith (Alex Pettyfer), a new transfer student to the high school in Paradise, Ohio, arrives with more than the usual adolescent baggage. He is one of a handful of children surviving a space war. His ancestors, the people of Lorien, were all but exterminated by the evil Mogadorians. The remaining nine fled to Earth, where their Abercrombie & Fitch looks make them stand out while trying to blend in. The Mogadorians, a black-trench-coat Mafia with bald heads and tribal tattoos, are on their trail, out to finish the genocide. They already have killed Numbers One, Two and Three. Which means John is up next.” — Colin Covert, Minneapolis Star Tribune The “Twilight” Comparison ” ‘I Am Number Four,’ the appealing new kid-on-the-teen-angst block, reverberates with much of the same dark combustible mix of action and romance that’s been fueling the ‘Twilight’ vampire mega-franchise for a while now. The issues of the heart have shifted from the undead to the otherworldly, and the battles have been amped up considerably, but its fate still rests on the basic boy-meets-girls story, which frankly could use a bit more bite.” — Betsy Sharkey, Los Angeles Times The Action “The screenplay by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar — adapting the young adult novel by James Frey and Jobie Hughes — works a few surprises into the familiar high school scenario; an action scene set at a haunted house goes in some unexpected directions, and the more we learn about Number Four’s outer space world, the stranger and more entertaining it gets (that pet beagle is not what he seems). But as ‘I Am Number Four’ ramps up toward the inevitable third-act fireballs and fights, any out-there appeal gets washed out by lots of CGI and pretty girls walking slowly away from explosions (Teresa Palmer, who shows up late as the alien Number Six, makes for a great bad-girl black swan to [Dianna] Agron’s buttoned-up Sarah). By the end it’s even turned into a kind of ‘Spider-Man’ knockoff, a young man standing in a graveyard, contemplating the meaning of his newfound great power and responsibility.” — Katey Rich, Cinema Blend The Dissenters ” ‘I Am Number Four’ is mostly a missed opportunity. The film plugs into some genuine teen angst and identity confusion that might have dovetailed nicely with its sci-fi elements. Instead these two realities, a high school with its many melodramas and aliens chasing each other around the country, operate on parallel tracks. At times it feels like the reels from two very different movies got mixed up in the projection booth. The idea here is nifty; the execution mostly pedestrian.” — Kirk Honeycutt, The Hollywood Reporter The Final Word ” ‘I Am Number Four’ is a well-made, reasonably diverting night at the multiplex that will seem overly familiar to everyone except teenage girls. It’ll be a retread to them, too, but that’s why they’ll like it — a sci-fi/fantasy drama that’s moody and broody to the point of occasional near-coma, ‘Number Four’ represents an acceptable holding action until the next installment of ‘Twilight’ rolls around.” — Ty Burr, Boston Globe Check out everything we’ve got on “I Am Number Four.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Britney Spears’ ‘Hold It Against Me’ Video: A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

From Greek mythology to mid-’90s Tool albums, Brit’s latest is full of blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments. By James Montgomery Britney Spears fights herself in “Hold It Against Me” Photo: Jive On Thursday night, after weeks of teasing, Britney Spears finally revealed her video for “Hold It Against Me,” a whirling, swirling dance explosion that features plenty of sass, swagger and exactly one flowing white gown. It also features plenty of nods to pop music’s past — not to mention several blink-and-you’d-miss-it odes to film, TV and, of course, Greek mythology. As is the case with all massive videos, there’s a whole lot to keep track of, so, much like we did for equally big clips like Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” and My Chemical Romance’s “Na Na Na,” we’ve put “Hold It Against Me” through the wringer and compiled a pop-culture cheat sheet that’s alphabetized and cross-referenced for your convenience. Believe us, this took way longer than you could imagine, but it was worth it. (Oh, and despite our best efforts, we’re sure there’s something we missed, which is why we need your help: Let us know what you spot in the comments below.) Photos of the references in Britney’s “Hold It Against Me.” The Graeae : In Greek mythology, they were the three sisters who shared a single eye. In Britney’s video, they’re hoodie-wearing dudes with serious dance moves (and no eyes at all). Same thing, really. Iamamiwhoami : Icky, sticky viral-video enigma whose early clips featured plenty of lying around in the fetal position (and amniotic fluids). In “HIAM,” Britney, covered in similarly sticky liquid, curls up on the floor, striking a pose that would make Iamami proud. Kanye West, “Runaway” : Over-the-top 35-minute mini-movie/allegory starring West as a man who cares for a phoenix who has fallen to Earth. The meteor that crashes to Earth at the beginning of “HIAM” reminds us a lot of the phoenix’s fiery entrance in ‘Ye’s film . And, if you look hard enough, you can also see the song’s lyrics printed out in the top left corner of the shot. Madonna, “Bedtime Stories” : Ultra-artistic 1995 video, directed by Mark Romanek, that cost a reported $5 million to make. From the futuristic set and the special effects to Brit’s long, flowing gown and whirling dancers, it appears to be a direct influence on pretty much everything in “HIAM.” Though we’re willing to bet Brit didn’t spend nearly as much to make her version. Madonna, “Die Another Day” : Big-budget 2002 Madonna video from the equally big-budget James Bond film of the same name. It featured a memorable fight scene that pitted Madge against her alter ego (Mariah Carey did the same thing in her “Heartbreaker” video, BTW). In “HIAM,” Britney battles her alter ego in a (very fashionable) kung fu fight. The Matrix” : Wachowski brothers franchise that featured plenty of TV screens and a whole lot of marauding machinery, just like “HIAM.” Like Keanu said, “Whoa.” “Mortal Kombat” : Totally awesome (and violent) fighting game that featured, among its cast of characters, a blue-garbed assassin named Sub-Zero. In “HIAM,” Britney’s dancers don outfits similar to him, only they don’t shoot ice out of their hands. Unless that part’s in the director’s cut. Robyn, “Indestructible” : Sexy 2010 video from Sweden’s sexiest pop export, it featured Robyn writhing on a table while wearing a dress made entirely of clear plastic tubes (courtesy of Australian artist Lucy McRae), sort of like the ones Britney uses to spray colored liquid all over the “HIAM” set. “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” : Cult 1975 film adapted from a British play, its iconic poster featured a pair of bright-red lips, which seem to have also made their way into “HIAM.” Tool,
