Why We Need Electric Car Subsidies

Photo via the Resilient Earth This year will see the debut of some of the most hotly anticipated electric cars ever designed for the mass market — notably, the Chevy Volt and the Nisson Leaf. And right on cue, the complaints and criticisms about EVs have begun to fly. The cars, which will at first be produced in smaller quantities and with new technologies, will be relatively expensive — $41K for the Volt and $33K for the Leaf, though a … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Mandy Joye warns of danger of methane gas in Gulf oil plumes

8 minute interview 6/28/10 with transcript Transcript: June 28th, 2010 – Water Why is it so hard to plug the well in the Gulf of Mexico? Mandy Joye: The methane concentrations in these plumes are 100 to 10,000 times as much as you would normally find in Gulf of Mexico water. Mandy Joye is an oceanographer at the University of Georgia. In June 2010, Joye returned from an emergency research expedition in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. She talked to EarthSky about the high concentrations of methane gas she discovered in oil plumes deep beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico. Mandy Joye: There’s also propane and butane, gases that derive from the same process of making oil. Are ocean currents likely to carry spilled oil to Atlantic? Dr. Joye said that there’s so much gas leaking into the Gulf that we might be looking at severe oxygen depletion in Gulf water. What happens, she explained, is that naturally occurring Gulf bacteria “eat up” the vast amounts of methane and other gases. Mandy Joye: But in the process, they’re consuming molecular oxygen from the water. The reason that’s a problem is that you could potentially have large volumes of water floating around in the Gulf of Mexico that don’t have any oxygen. Ocean life depends on oxygen. Oxygen depletion in the Gulf, Joye said, means lost habitat for wildlife, and potentially long-term repercussions on local fishing. Glenn Plumb and other scientists believe oil spill is harming base of Gulf food chain Mandy Joye: The degradation of this oil and gas being injected in the gulf of Mexico is going to cause oxygen depletion in the water, there’s no way around it. She explained that ocean plants like phytoplankton normally inject oxygen into marine systems, but the Gulf has been so chemically altered that even plants are having trouble surviving. Mandy Joye: The microbial community is going to break this down, but it doesn’t come for free, it comes at the expense of the oxygen budget of the system, and that’s something that’s not easily corrected. Joye said the this injection of gas is happening throughout the water column. Mandy Joye: And the consumption of oxygen is happening throughout the water column. It’s not just in these plumes where you have high rates of microbial activity. We measure elevated rates of activity all throughout the water column. They were highest in the plumes, because that’s where the concentration of methane is the highest. But the whole water column is being stimulated by the oil and gas coming from the spill. She said very little is known about the baseline methane cycle in the Gulf of Mexico, so there are many, many unknown surrounding the impact of the methane. She said that if scientists closely monitor the microbial activity and come to understand it, experts might be able to add an element (e.g., nitrogen) to speed of the breakdown of oil and dissolved gas. Mandy Joye: I suspect that the microorganisms that live in the plumes are probably going to run out of some critical nutrient or oxygen. So their activity is going to be limited at some point. And these plumes are going to spread to other areas because you’re going to run out of some critical thing the bacteria need in the core of the plume. Joye added that another science team affiliated with the University of Florida found a plume to the north of where she was working that spans 20 miles. She said other plumes likely exist, which means that large areas of the Gulf could be closed of to fishing for an indefinite period. Dr. Joye added that she does not believe dispersant, which was added to Gulf water by British Petroleum in an attempt to break up the oil, to be safe, because it has not been tested in open water at scale. Ke$ha Talks Touring With Rihanna: ‘We Braid Each Other’s Hair … Naked’

‘I’m kind of just, like, her hype girl,’ opening act tells MTV News of Rihanna. By James Montgomery Ke$ha Photo: MTV News We’re rather mystified by reports that Rihanna’s Last Girl on Earth Tour has been struggling to sell tickets. After all, from what Ke$ha tells us, it sounds like the can’t-miss show of the summer. “We have slumber parties and pillow fights and we braid each other’s hair a lot,” Ke$ha laughed. “We talk about boys, naked.” We’d pay $91.75 to see that. And while we suspect that Ke$ha — who, along with Travie McCoy , has been serving as the opening act on the Last Girl jaunt — was only kidding about those backstage shenanigans, she has been having a blast on the tour. She said that sharing the stage with Rihanna has been a highlight of her still-young career. “Touring with Rihanna is incredible, you should come see it. It’s really fun. I’ve been out with her for about two weeks now, and I just learn so much from her as a performer,” she said. “She has one of the best voices of anyone I’ve ever seen live, and I kind of just take it as my opportunity to hype up thousands of people.” And though her duties as opener — and hair braider — are rather taxing, Ke$ha is also using days off from the tour to play headlining shows of her own. Because she’s still got plenty of energy left in the tank, even after she’s spent the whole night hyping the crowd … and having pillow fights. “It’s epic. She’s amazing live and her voice is just so good,” Ke$ha smiled. “I’m kind of just, like, her hype girl. I take the stage and hype it up for 40 minutes.” Related Artists Ke$ha Rihanna

Tim Burton To Direct 3-D ‘Monsterpocalypse’

‘Giant monsters come to Earth and start wreaking havoc,’ producer Roy Lee says of board-game adaptation. By Eric Ditzian Tim Burton Photo: Pascal Le Segretain/ Getty Images To the upcoming cinematic slate of board-game adaptations that includes “Battleship,” “Candy Land,” “Ouija” and “Monopoly,” we can now officially add “Monsterpocalypse.” Tim Burton is attached to direct the project based on the tabletop strategy game, which he is developing as a 3-D release for DreamWorks, according to a SlashFilm.com report. “The general take on the film that I can give you is that the giant monsters come to earth and start wreaking havoc,” producer Roy Lee said. “The humans, at this point, fight back. And they feel like they’ve destroyed them, but they quickly learn that the monsters that come had actually not died and just sort of burrowed underground and are sending some sort of signal into space. “Apparently, it is probably going to be a distress signal,” he continued. “So the humans know that something is going to be coming, they just don’t know what yet. And they know how big these monsters can be. Then it cuts to many years later when nothing has come back, but the humans have prepared for possible monsters coming back. And by this time, they have developed these giant robots that will fight the monsters when they come.” News of the project first popped up in May, followed the next month by word that longtime Burton collaborator John August (“Corpse Bride”) was coming on-board to pen the script. Lee confirmed that the film is being developed as a 3-D release with an eye on a late 2012 release date. “That would be correct,” Lee said about the 3-D potential. “I mean, that’s where [visual effects supervisor] Ken Ralston is saying there is no reason why we shouldn’t, because seeing major cities destroyed and monsters fighting with robots would naturally lend itself to a 3-D movie.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .

How is Super Mole Blood Tied to Gene Therapy?

Photo of an Eastern mole by S. Aquaticus Scientists have discovered that moles can survive underground for long periods of time because they have super hemoglobin. They have a more efficient means of transporting carbon dioxide. This allows them to burrow below the surface of the earth and, even cooler, be able to re-breathe their old air. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

My Open Letter To President Obama.

Dear Mr. President. I love you Dude, but I have to tuff love you here. Sorry! I know you have accomplishes a lot, but the average American does not know that, see that or think that. They wanted to see change that would rock the earth back in 2008. You have to start rocking the earth NOW. USE THE RAGE AND ANGER THAT IS OUT THERE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!! Republicans do. Attack the Republicans; right now you look like an appeasing vacillator. NO MORE LINCOLN AND MORE TEDDY ROSEVELT thank you!!! If you do not rock the earth NOW, we will lose Congress and you will certainly lose the White House in 2012 as a lame duck. PLEASE MR. PRESIDENT, please do not leave us again at the mercies of the Conservatives. We will be so poor, and we will literally die with our children starving and freezing in the streets. America will lose its last bit of democracy as well, as we fall into complete corporate dictatorship. Get Joe Biden to lower the filibuster break to 51 votes and then ram forward Change We Can Believe IN, fast and furious before November. Let the Republicans walk out! Then call the Republicans what they are un-American, traders for BP, Big Oil and anyone that will fill their pockets with money, who want unemployed desperate workers who will work for pennies, who want to see American jobs go overseas, and want to fill the pockets of the wealthy from the pockets of the middle class and poor. They loved George Bush and they want Jeb next, so American can be poorer. SAY IT! SAY IT SIMPLE, so the average dullard will understand, BUT SAY IT WITH AL THE VOLCANIC ANGER THAT IS IN THE AMERICAN HEART RIGHT NOW. USE THAT ANGER, PLEASE!!! And while the pigs are away, pass everything we need. Then take the credit when it gets better!!! The south is not going to secede, why should they, they think they can beat you in November. Mr. President, millions of lives are in YOUR hands. The fate of the planet is in YOUR hands. This is your defining moment for your soul. Do not hear me, and it will be the end of all of us in America and the world. This is the leading pivotal moment in history, you decide if we survive as a species or not. added by: ezrierin

Bristol Palin-Levi Johnston Engagement: Just For (Reality) Show?

Yesterday, we reported the joyous engagement of the previously-engaged, then estranged, then reconciled tandem from Alaska, Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston . It’s a wonderful thing, couples doing what it takes for love, for a child. But given who we’re talking about, there are cynics who suspect other motives at work. Seriously, when’s the reality show announcement? Next week? The week after? We stress again, this is just a rumor started by cynics. Yet it wouldn’t shock us. Think Bethenny Getting Married meets Northern Exposure meets the RNC! Gawker floats the following theory : “Within the next 4-6 weeks Palin’s PR people will releases news that Bristol and Levi will ‘star’ in a new reality show.” “All about young parenting. And yes, they will also work up to a wedding.” One they will remain abstinent prior to, of course. Because they’re like that. “This is part of the planned ‘story arc.’ Levi will be promoted as young, decent, salt of the earth guy. Bristol will be seen dealing with ‘challenges’ of young motherhood.” “Willow will be on a lot, maybe some Piper thrown in. They’ll attempt to boost rankings the first few episodes by having Sarah cameos, but the rest of the time will be a ‘conservative young marrieds who just happen to already have a baby’ theme.” Is such a scenario that crazy? Think about it. Levi’s on the hook for $1,700 a month in child support – or like $3,000 per month before taxes – a sizable sum even if he weren’t tied to the state of Alaska or lacking for a college degree. We’re just saying. The reality show would give him a salary, get the Palins get off his back, and get everybody on the same page as far as hyping the mythical exploits of Sarah Palin and her brood. Foolproof if you think about it. Reality show or not, will they last?

Royal Society to Study the Impact of Population Growth

While many species on Earth have been teetering on the edge of extinction in recent decades, human beings have witnessed a population boom on a scale that is quite difficult imagine . It was just in 1804 that the human population first numbered one billion, which seems quaint considering that 200 years later, there’s about 6.7 billion of us on Earth. So far, no one is really sure what this unchecked population growth means for the future of mankind — or how… Read the full story on TreeHugger
