On Friday January 20, 2012 George Luca’s passion project, Red Tails , will finally be in theaters. After years of lobbying in Hollywood to get a feature film made about the Tuskegee Airmen, the director and producer financed the project with his own money. Where The Red Tails Worked And Played Overseas Tapping director Anthony Hemingway (“The Wire”, “OZ”, “The Corner”) to execute his vision, an all-star cast of talent was assembled to tell the story of the fighting 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group of the U.S. Army Air Corps that fought in WWII. Given that Lucas is known by most for his epic Star Wars franchise, which was inspired in many ways by the fighting in World War II, it only seemed right to ask the cast of Red Tails if their new movie qualified to be the Black Star Wars. Red Tails executive producer George Lucas had nothing but good intentions by getting this movie made, but he admits that he has unintentionally put Black filmmakers in jeopardy. He financed Red Tails with his own money because he could not get a studio in Hollywood to pick it up. Red Tails cost $58 million to make, more than most other Black films to produce, and if it doesn’t succeed financially, Lucas recognizes that studios will be less likely to green light more movies by Black filmmakers for Black audiences. Actress Nia Long gave birth to a baby boy, Kez Sunday Udoka, this past Monday. According to spokeswoman Priscilla Moralez “both mother and child are healthy and happy to be home.” Spend 24 Hours In Nia’s Hometown! The 41 year old actress has a 1o year old son, Massai Dorsey II from a previous relationship. This is the first child for Long’s partner, NBA player Ime Udoka. In an interview with Ebony Magazine, Nia shared that her doctors were doubtful she could ever conceive another child due to her age, and turned inward for spiritual strength: “I honestly asked God for this. I remember I was driving home from the doctor, and I called [my boyfriend] Ime, and I was like, ‘Babe, I’m really kind of sad right now. The doctor actually said if I wanted to have more children, it would be hard.’ The next time [Ime] came to visit, he said, ‘I don’t believe that.’ I said, ‘You don’t?’ He said, ‘No.’ And I said, ‘Good, me neither.’ Then I got pregnant.” 2011 is turning out to be a banner year for Nia; in addition to her new bundle of joy, she enjoyed rave reviews earlier this year as a loving Muslim mother in the indie hit Mooz-lum, as well as the recent announcement Universal Pictures gave the greenlight for a sequel to 1999′s The Best Man . Tyler Perry covers Ebony magazine’s August 2011 issue. Inside, he reveals the 3 events in his life that profoundly changed him; the first being turning 40, the second being his mother dying, and the third being his appearance on “Oprah” in which he shared details about being sexually abused. He also admits to almost becoming a father. On why he waited until his mother passed to reveal he’d been abused: When my mother took her last breath, I was able to take my first because I would not be a source of pain for her as long as she was alive. I didn’t know how liberating it would be to sit in the pain of the moment, feel it, allow myself to squeeze it as hard as I could, then let it go. On almost becoming a father: Back in December when we thought we were having a kid, I got overwhelmed. We? Is there a woman in your life? Yeah, she is really, really special. It’s the longest relationship I’ve been in, largely because I don’t feel any kind of marry-me-now pressure from her.
