Nicki Minaj On Grammys: ‘It Doesn’t Matter What I’m Nominated For!’

‘To sell, like, a million records, in this economy, that’s crazy,’ she tells MTV News on red carpet. By Ryan J. Downey, with reporting by Sway Calloway Nicki Minaj and Sway on the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards red carpet Photo: MTV News Nicki Minaj’s debut album took the top spot on the charts, she’s a Grammy nominee and presenter and she met up with her reality-TV heroine Snooki on the red carpet . But despite all the high points, the 26-year-old star assured MTV News that the best is yet to come. “In my head, I’ve already done two movies, I’ve already put my second album out, I’ve already gone on a world tour. That’s what I’m looking for the next 12 months to bring,” she said shortly before the 53rd annual Grammy Awards at the Los Angeles Staples Center, where she was nominated alongside Ludacris in the Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group category. “I have some surprises that people are not gonna believe. I have some surprises that I’m going to be able to announce really, really soon.” The hip-hop star’s Pink Friday reached #1 on the Billboard 200 chart nearly three months after its release. She’s done “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show,” and her leopard-print couture turned heads at the Grammys. It’s been a crazy ride and one that she’s learned from in ways that will benefit her greatly in the future. “I’ve learned to never rush anything in my career or my life anymore,” she said. “The last year taught me that. Like, even with the new album, it’s going to take its course naturally and everything is going to work out. Because before I used to stress out. You know, ‘Am I nominated for this?’ “It doesn’t matter what I’m nominated for! I’m working! I am a working artist in the freaking worst economy ever. To sell, like, a million records, in this economy, that’s crazy.” Next on the Young Money rapper’s agenda is a tour with mentor Lil Wayne that will also feature Blink-182’s Travis Barker and Rick Ross, among others. “I’m really looking forward to that tour,” she said. “And just getting back to L.A. and cranking out some new records and all of that good stuff. I’m working with a lot of new producers as well, so I’m excited.” Minaj’s schedule may get hectic, but she works hard to maintain balance and perspective. “Overall, I’m in a peaceful place. And that’s the only thing that you could ask for. To be in the midst of this chaotic business,” she added, pointing to the red carpet around her, “and be able to find peace? I’m good.” For Grammy Awards winners list, analysis, interviews, fashion and more, stick with MTV News during the big show and beyond. AP Headline: Keeping 2011-2012 Income Tax Rates the Same Is ‘Big New Tax Law’

Did you know that the “big new tax law” signed by President Obama yesterday “will save taxpayers, on average, about $3,000 next year,” and that it will have “tax breaks for being married, having children, paying for child care, going to college or investing in securities”? Don't spend that extra $3,000 yet, because it mostly won't be there. With the only major exception being the 2-point cut in the Social Security payroll tax, and of course barring new legislation the next Congress may take on, the tax laws for the next two years will essentially be the same as they have been since 2003, when Congress lowered marginal income, capital gain, and dividend income tax rates. This lack of major change didn't stop the Ministry of Propaganda — er, the Associated Press — and reporter Stephen Ohlemacher from calling the new legislation “the most significant new tax law in a decade,” when there's almost nothing “new” about it, or from trumpeting how much certain American families will “save” as a result. Here are a few paragraphs from Ohlemacher's report : read more

How Will Americans Spend the Obama Tax Cuts? [Infographics]

The House of Representatives just approved the $858 billion tax package brokered between Republicans and President Obama! How will Americans in the lowest, highest, and median income brackets be spending that money? We break it down in a handy chart. More

Reuters Editor Shrieks: Tax ‘Lucky Sperm Club’ to Break ‘Landed Gentry’

For Chrystia Freeland, the thought of only taxing wealthy estates 35 percent is “destructive to the fabric of America.” The Reuters global editor-at-large went on a ear-piercing tear this afternoon on MSNBC's “Dylan Ratigan Show,” stoking the flames of class warfare. “[The wealthy] were just born–it's the lucky sperm club, right?” screeched Freeland. “I don't think American wealth should be determined by that.” Politics Daily contributor Matt Lewis, for his part, tried to maintain a civil discourse, but Freeland repeatedly interrupted him to interject her inflammatory rhetoric. “I thought the philosophy was against a landed gentry,” asserted an indignant Freeland. “I thought the philosophy was against an aristocracy. I thought the American way was you build it yourself and everyone was born equal.” [Video embedded after page break.] read more

Deceive the Children: NYT ‘Learning Network’ Frames Federal Income Tax Rate Extension as Benefiting ‘Especially the Wealthy’

A New York Times “Learning Network” graphic informs us that under the proposed Obama-GOP tax and spending compromise, “rates will not change for at least two years for anyone.” Wow. Somebody at the Learning Network needs to tell the Old Gray Lady's beat reporters, editorial board, and opinion columnists. Just today, reporter Helene Cooper, in noting

AP’s Crutsinger Issues Incomplete, Sloppy, Misleading Report on November’s Record Deficit, Obama-GOP ‘Tax-Cut Plan’

How can you cover a story about Uncle Sam's November Monthly Treasury Statement and the proposed Obama-GOP compromise on taxes and unemployment benefits without using the words “spending,” “receipts,” any form of “collect,” or “unemployment”? It's a neat trick, but the Associated Press's Martin Crutsinger pulled it off in his Friday afternoon dispatch shortly after the government report's release. Instead of communicating apparently boring facts, Crutsinger concentrated his fire on the “tax-cut agreement” with a supposed “cost (of) $855 billion over two years” worked out by President Obama and Congressional Republicans. In doing so, he “somehow” failed to mention that the proposal includes a 13-month extension of unemployment benefits. Based on a comparison

MSNBC’s Chuck Todd Continues to Distort Tax Deal’s ‘Astronomical’ Cost

MSNBC's Chuck Todd on the December 7 “Daily Rundown” was uncharacteristically heated in his opposition to the compromise between President Barack Obama and congressional Republicans on extending the Bush tax rates. Interviewing a Treasury Department official, Todd used flawed statistics to malign the proposed two-year extension of tax breaks for all families as unacceptably expensive. “The cost of this is astronomical though,” proclaimed the NBC Political Director. “The payroll tax cut means essentially borrowing from the Social Security trust fund to do this temporary payroll tax. I mean, it's 120 billion, that's a lot of money!” [Video embedded after the page break.] read more
