New Birth Missionary Baptist Church pastor Eddie Long told his congregation on Sunday that he was taking a brief leave from the Lithonia megachurch. Long said he plans to use the time off to heal his family. “I’m still your pastor. You’ll still receive my direction,” Bishop Eddie Long said Sunday. “You’ve given me some weeks to take care of some family business.” As we previously reported, Long’s wife, Vanessa, filed for divorce on Thursday. She later backtracked on the divorce only to have her lawyers release another statement hours later saying the divorce was back on. Long’s wife, Vanessa, filed for divorce late Thursday afternoon. She said Friday morning, via a statement prepared by the church’s spokesman, that she had changed her mind but by day’s end announced the divorce was on. After Vanessa’s divorce filing Eddie Long released this statement: “God has blessed us with a wonderful family. Vanessa is, and has always been, a loving, dedicated and committed wife and Mother. My love for her is deep and unwavering. It remains our sincere desire to continue working together in seeking God’s Will in these circumstances. We will do so as privately as possible and with a spirit of love and sensitivity to our family. We ask that you be in prayer for our family and that we be allowed to privately pursue this important path without need, or request from the media, for further comment.” In his sermon on Sunday, Long reiterated that he had no plans to resign, saying he had not “stepped down,” but instead had “stepped up.” Several protesters picketing outside New Birth Sunday morning said Long didn’t go far enough and needs to resign. Last fall four young men accused Eddie Long of sexual abuse. Although Long vowed to fight the charges, he later settled the matter out of court for an undisclosed sum of money. It was later revealed that a fifth man, Centino Kemp, also received settlement money. New Birth once boasted a membership of roughly 25,000, but attendance has declined in the year since the sexual coercion lawsuit was filed. Bishop Eddie Long’s wife, Vanessa Long, has filed for divorce! Vanessa Long made the announcement today in the following statement: “After a great deal of deliberation and prayer, I have decided to terminate my marriage to Bishop Eddie L. Long. Accordingly, I authorized my attorneys to file for divorce on December 1, 2011. It is my sincere hope that this matter can be resolved expeditiously, harmoniously and fairly. I ask that you respect my privacy and that of my family, as my attorneys and I have agreed that we will not try this case in the media, and I do not intend to make any further statements concerning this matter.” The couple married in 1990 and have three children together, Edward, Jared and Taylor. Literally hours after filing for divorce from her husband, Bishop Eddie Long , his wife Vanessa Long issued another statement saying she has withdrawn her petition. Vanessa Long made the announcement in the following statement: Upon prayerful reflection, I have reconsidered and plan to withdraw my petition for divorce from my husband, Bishop Eddie L. Long. I love my husband. I believe in him and admire his strength, and courage. My filing followed years of attacks in the media that frustrated and overwhelmed me. I love my family and church family, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Therefore, my husband and I have mutually agreed to find healing from these attacks. Photo courtesy of WSB-TV For the first time since settling sex abuse lawsuits with Bishop Eddie Long, two of his accusers are speaking out about the case in an exclusive interview with WSB-TV . By speaking out about their alleged relationship with Long, Jamal Parris and Spencer LeGrande risk losing the unspecified money they were awarded in the settlement. The young men told WSB-TV that it was never about money and was always about the truth, and they feel like their whole story still hasn’t been told. The two said they are planning on writing a book about their ordeal. The men spoke to WSB-TV for several hours, about their relationships with Bishop Eddie Long, what they went through during the settlement talks, and how they’re doing now. One of the four men who accused Bishop Eddie Long of sexual misconduct — the first one to speak publicly about the allegation — was arrested this week in Miami on suspicion of being a drug dealer. Jamal Parris, 24, was driving a white 2011 BMW in Miami Beach Tuesday evening when a Florida Highway Patrol officer noticed that it had no tags. After pulling the car over the approaching officer approached and smelled marijuana. A search of the car turned up 181 grams of marijuana, which is worth about $1,000 on the street. The officer also discovered 50 clear plastic baggies and a Taurus semiautomatic handgun. Parris also was carrying $1,250 in cash. Parris was arrested and jailed. He was charged with two felony counts: possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm while committing a felony. He also was charged with operating a motor vehicle with no registration, a misdemeanor. Read the full story here.
