Before Bishop Eddie Long came under fire for settling sexual abuse charges against him out of court when he vowed to fight them, Long’s finances were under scrutiny in a congressional investigation by Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley. WSB-TV starting looking into Long’s assets more than six months ago. Now with his wife Vanessa filing for divorce, Long’s finances are under the microscope. WSB-TV found very little paperwork because the church and its dozens of affiliated companies file very few public documents. Records show Long’s assets have been intertwined with New Birth’s assets for years, including New Birth paying approximately $200,000 in property taxes for Long and $85,000 in taxes for his private plane. Long’s financial troubles appear to be mounting. In addition to the undisclosed financial settlement to five young men who accused him of sexual abuse last summer, records show Long has agreed to pay nearly $2 million to settle a defaulted bank loan, he owes $200,000 to a developer, and in October church members sued Long for over $1 million in failed investments sold by a man he endorsed. WSB-TV requested an interview with Long, but a spokesperson told reporter Jodie Fleischer the bishop was too busy. After facing criticism from leaders in the Jewish community, Bishop Eddie Long has apologized for the controversial ceremony at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church where Long was crowned a king and wrapped in Torah scrolls by Ralph Messer. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution , Long apologized in a letter to Bill Nigut, Southeast Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League. “The ceremony was not my suggestion, nor was it my intent, to participate in any ritual that is offensive in any manner to the Jewish community,” wrote Long. “I denounce any action that depicts me as a king, for I am merely just a servant of the Lord.” Messer, who serves as Rabbi of Simchat Torah Beit Midrash in Parker, Colorado, proclaimed during the ceremony that Long is a “prophet” and “is not on the Earth! New Birth Missionary Baptist Church plans to reopen its New Birth Christian Academy this Thursday (January 19), according to Channel 2 Action News. It was announced at New Birth’s Sunday service that New Birth Christian Academy will reopen through a cooperative agreement with Aurora Day School. Aurora has campuses in Tucker and Roswell. New Birth Christian Academy was a pre-K-12 school and was founded by New Birth’s senior pastor Bishop Eddie Long . As we previously reported, New Birth Christian Academy’s abrupt announcement in December that it would close after 18 years left hundreds of students and parents looking for a new school. At the time New Birth said it was closing the school due to the poor economy and low student enrollment. After announcing that he was taking a leave from heading New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, Long’s appearance at the Watch Night Service at New Birth seemed to mark his formal return. After a month-long absence, Long first appeared on New Year’s Eve preaching from his pulpit with his usual fiery style, saying: 2012 is here! New Birth Missionary Baptist Church pastor Eddie Long told his congregation on Sunday that he was taking a brief leave from the Lithonia megachurch. Long said he plans to use the time off to heal his family. “I’m still your pastor. You’ll still receive my direction,” Bishop Eddie Long said Sunday. “You’ve given me some weeks to take care of some family business.” As we previously reported, Long’s wife, Vanessa, filed for divorce on Thursday. She later backtracked on the divorce only to have her lawyers release another statement hours later saying the divorce was back on. Long’s wife, Vanessa, filed for divorce late Thursday afternoon. She said Friday morning, via a statement prepared by the church’s spokesman, that she had changed her mind but by day’s end announced the divorce was on. After Vanessa’s divorce filing Eddie Long released this statement: “God has blessed us with a wonderful family. Vanessa is, and has always been, a loving, dedicated and committed wife and Mother. My love for her is deep and unwavering. It remains our sincere desire to continue working together in seeking God’s Will in these circumstances. We will do so as privately as possible and with a spirit of love and sensitivity to our family. We ask that you be in prayer for our family and that we be allowed to privately pursue this important path without need, or request from the media, for further comment.” In his sermon on Sunday, Long reiterated that he had no plans to resign, saying he had not “stepped down,” but instead had “stepped up.” Several protesters picketing outside New Birth Sunday morning said Long didn’t go far enough and needs to resign. Last fall four young men accused Eddie Long of sexual abuse. Although Long vowed to fight the charges, he later settled the matter out of court for an undisclosed sum of money. It was later revealed that a fifth man, Centino Kemp, also received settlement money. New Birth once boasted a membership of roughly 25,000, but attendance has declined in the year since the sexual coercion lawsuit was filed. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church thinks the rumors about Bishop Eddie Long’s wife Vanessa leaving him are so ridiculous , that it’s spokesperson felt the need to issue a statement and announced a staged “family event.” The statement, from spokesman Art Franklin, said New Birth and its leadership have chosen not to respond to “rumors,” instead remaining focused on “God’s mission for the ministry.” It called such claims hateful and damaging. But in the digital world “many people can’t discern the difference between legitimate journalists and irresponsible bloggers,” the statement said. “Recently, some blog entries have surfaced claiming to have anonymous sources stating that New Birth First Lady Elder Vanessa Long has moved out of the house. That claim is completely and absolutely false. Mrs. Long is very much a loving, dedicated and committed wife and mother.” The church’s Website does not mention the rumors. But people are asked to join the Longs as they host an upcoming “Family and Friends Homecoming Celebration” from 4-9 p.m. July 2 at the church. Still sounds fishy to us. Fox Business host Eric Bolling is drawing fire for comments he made about President Obama on Friday. On his show “Follow The Money,” Bolling criticized Obama’s visit with Ali Bongo, the president of Gabon, by saying, “Guess who’s coming to dinner? A dictator. Mr. Obama shares a laugh with one of Africa’s kleptocrats. It’s not the first time he’s had a hoodlum in the hizzouse.” As he said “hizzouse,” a picture of rapper Common appeared on the screen. Common’s appearance at a White House poetry event drew loud complaints from conservatives. Later, Bolling made similar comments. “What’s with all the hoods in the hizzy?” he asked, saying that Bongo has been “accused of human rights violations and plundering billions of his country’s dollars.” The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg called the comments “open, and revolting, anti-Obama racism” in a blog post on Sunday. Well-placed spies for The Mo’Kelly Report and long-time members of New Birth are alleging that Vanessa Long, the First Lady of New Birth has moved out of the house, in fact taking one of the children with her due to the scandal. These are WELL-placed and trustworthy sources. Mo’Kelly has already reached out to New Birth to see if it has any official response or counter narrative. Don’t hold your breath if you expect New Birth to tell the truth and acknowledge any family disarray. The rumors of Mrs. Long’s move have been floating around since early last week, and the fact that no official statement or well crafted photo has appeared probably means something.
