Wikileaks: Banned In Antarctica

Our government's idiotic war on Wikileaks extends even to America's tiny presence in Antarctica. A memo sent to all Americans in Antarctica effectively censors Wikileaks material from the entire continent. Can't tip off the penguins about our secret plans! The memo was sent out to the 1,500-or-so Americans currently living in Antarctica as part of the United States Antarctic Program (USAP). It reminds them that leaked Wikileaks documents are still technically classified, and “the transmission, processing, storage, and/or use of classified information with USAP information systems are prohibited.” Given that the USAP is in charge of the United States' three Antarctic research bases and their communications networks, this amounts to a total Wikileaks blackout for all Americans in Antarctica, who are mostly scientists and support staff. Never mind that one geologist working with the USAP actually blogs for the New York Times, which has been publishing many of Wikileaks' leaked cables. Maybe all government employees should just be sent to Antarctica until this whole Wikileaks thing blows over. It's the only way to protect America. Rare Brain Disorder Prevents All Fear

A middle-aged woman known as SM blithely reaches for poisonous snakes, giggles in haunted houses and once, upon escaping the clutches of a knife-wielding man, didn’t run but calmly walked away. A rare kind of brain damage precludes her from experiencing fear of any sort, finds a study published online December 16 in Current Biology. link: http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2010/12/fear-brain-amygdala/ added by: eva2

Christmas Time Terror Rhetoric Right On Schedule

This is almost laughable. These supposed terror threats are in reality completely exaggerated scare tactics used to push the threat of non existent cave dwelling ninjas. Al Qaeda was created by our government to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan, as admitted by multiple mainstream news outlets. Iraqi officials have claimed that captured insurgents have told them of a plan to commit suicide attacks in the United States and Europe. This has prompted government officials to contact state and local authorities about the threat and to remain vigilant and look for any suspicious activity. http://www.activistpost.com/2010/12/christmas-time-terror-rhetoric-right-on.html… added by: riverratt50

VIDEO: Police Arrest 131 Antiwar Protesters In Front Of White House

WASHINGTON — Hoping to spark the country's silent majority into action, 131 antiwar protesters got themselves arrested Thursday, in one of the larger acts of civil disobedience in front of the White House in some time. Carrying signs that frequently included question marks — “Peace on earth?” and “How is the war economy working for you?” — protesters organized by a Missouri-based veterans group marched up to the White House gates and refused to disperse, holding their ground for several hours on a snowy and blustery day. Among those arrested was Daniel Ellsberg, the Vietnam-era whistleblower who leaked the Pentagon Papers as an act of protest in 1971. Thursday's arrest was his 80th. All the arrests were appropriately peaceful although some protesters went limp, forcing police to carry them to the loaned Metrobuses waiting to take them to a booking facility. Only one protester actually attached himself to the gate with a bicycle lock. All were charged with failure to obey lawful order, a misdemeanor, said Park Police spokesman David Schlosser. Jerry Brown: California Budget Is "Much Worse Than I Thought — We’ve Been Living In Fantasy Land"

You know it's a bad sign when the outgoing California governor announces a fiscal emergency and everyone ignores him. Now incoming governor Jerry Brown has realized how screwed the state is and he's announcing his own budget emergency, according to the LAT. He said last night: “I'm going to try to get the budget agreements done within about 60 days. I don't think we have a lot of time to waste… It will be a very tough budget, but it will be transparent… We've been living in fantasy land. It is much worse than I thought. I'm shocked.” Hear that, last year's $20 billion budget cuts amounted to living in fantasy land. Brown implied he would apply major cuts to the education system and other programs. He also refused to rule out new taxes. And it's got to add up to at least $29 billion in cuts. California Says Yes To Molten Solar

The California Energy Commission has approved a permit for SolarReserve to build a 150-megawatt solar plant that uses molten salt to store energy, the company announced Wednesday. —The Santa Monica, Calif.-based start-up says its Rice Solar Energy Project will be located 30 miles from Blythe, Calif., and when running at full capacity will supply enough energy to power the equivalent of 68,000 homes annually. The project also has a 25-year power purchase agreement with Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). ==================== California Says Yes To Molten Solar December 16, 2010 9:44 AM PST by Candace Lombardi http://news.cnet.com/8301-11128_3-20025870-54.html?part=rss&tag=feed&sub… —continued—- The molten salt system will enable the solar farm to store and release solar energy so that it can continue to generate electricity for up to eight hours after sunset, according to SolarReserve. Molten salt solar plants, which have been built in Spain by SolarReserve with additional molten solar projects underway in Nevada and Sicily, work by using molten salt to retain and release heat energy. In the case of a molten salt solar plant, heliostats–giant rotating mirrors controlled by computers to best track and reflect sun onto a specific point–reflect sun rays onto a central tower, or a series of pipes, containing a molten salt mixture. The molten salt generally consists of sodium nitrates and potassium. The solar rays heat the liquefied salt to a temperature of up to 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The steam from the molten salt is then harnessed to power a generator that makes electricity. Afterward, the cooled molten salt is then piped back to the tower to be heated once again. In the case of the proposed Rice Solar Energy Project, the heliostats will be directed to a large central tower using a molten salt system developed by Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne. The company received more than $10 million to develop more efficient molten-salt systems, as part of a Department of Energy (DOE) project sponsoring 13 companies with funds. However, this latest California board approval does not mean this project is full steam ahead. The Rice Solar Energy Project still needs to receive approvals from both the Bureau of Land Management and the Western Area Power Administration, according to SolarReserve. added by: twohawks

Israel condemns Norway’s upgrade of Palestinian standing in Oslo to ‘diplomatic delegation’

After failing TSA screening, flier in wheelchair (and her underwear) leaves Okla.

Yesterday, wearing only a black bra and panties, a 52-year-old woman who uses a wheelchair missed her flight out of Oklahoma City. She failed the security screening. Transportation Security Administration screeners told Phoenix-bound Tammy Banovac her wheelchair, luggage and clothes showed traces of nitrates, which can be used in bombs, The Oklahoman reports. After more than an hour of hand searches and interrogation, she was told to come back to Will Rogers World Airport today. This morning, Banovac returned — wearing the same minimalist travel ensemble. She passed TSA's screening and off she and her dog went. (She dressed after being screened.) Banovac told the paper that because of her wheelchair she is typically hand-searched. But the TSA's new, enhanced pat-downs have left her feeling violated. She said an “unpleasant” TSA experience two weeks ago prompted her revealing approach to pat-downs. “If it happened anywhere else, it would have been sexual assault,” she said. Naturally, someone captured her 7 a.m. departure and posted it on YouTube. http://content.usatoday.com/communities/ondeadline/post/2010/12/after-failing-ts… added by: Radical_Centrist

Thaci faces probe over alleged organ trafficking

Hashim Thaci, Kosovo’s newly re-elected prime minister, is coming under fresh scrutiny over his guerrilla past as European foreign ministers examine allegations about organ trafficking in the 1998-99 war. Dick Marty, a Council of Europe rapporteur, presented a report on Thursday to members of the 47-country organisation that alleges that Mr Thaci, a leader in the Kosovo Liberation Army against Serbia, also formed a powerful “mafia” network among former guerrilla fighters for narcotics and organ trafficking. The council, which promotes human rights, democracy and the rule of law around the continent published the report on its website and tabled it for discussion next month. Solar Cinema Takes Rural Kenya by Storm (Video)

Image credit: SolarAid I already knew that solar is a life saver in Africa , and that it can be a great way to boost school performance too. But it hadn’t occurred to me that it is also a fantastic way to bring the joys of a good Jackie Chan movie to the masses. That, and some well-aimed education on the benefits of solar over fossil fuels. … Read the full story on TreeHugger
