Schlitz—who was homeschooled—graduated from high school at 13-years-old. She then went on to take courses at Tarrant County College and also furthered her studies at Texas Woman’s University. After receiving her bachelor’s degree this Spring she will pursue her law degree at Southern Methodist University’s Dedman School of Law. The Dallas-based institution is one of nine schools that accepted Schlitz and is recognized as one of the top 50 law schools in the country. Among the other schools that accepted her were the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Howard University, Texas Southern University, and others. Her family recognized that she was gifted at an early age. After Schlitz underwent intelligence tests and performed well, her parents decided it was best for her to be homeschooled. Not only would it give her the opportunity to learn at her own accelerated pace, but they wouldn’t have to keep her in an educational setting where she didn’t feel challenged. Schlitz initially wanted to follow in her mother’s footsteps and pursue a career in medicine, but witnessing all of the inequality in our country motivated her to want to become a lawyer. “It is my hope that I can bring my passion for addressing education equity issues, and help facilitate a program that focuses on the legal advocacy needs of underserved students and their families in accessing gifted education programs,” she wrote in a piece for Better Make Room . “The lack of access to these programs helps promote stereotypes and keeps students of color in our K-12 schools locked in an education system that views them as the problem instead of the solution.” Aside from making her mark in law, she plans on creating an organization that empowers children to help them reach their full potential. Earlier this year Schlitz and her mother Dr. Myiesha Taylor released a book titled The Homeschool Alternative which highlights how homeschooling is beneficial for Black children. Khloe Kardashian: Tristan Thompson is a Good Dad! For Real!

Poor Khloe Kardashian, right? And yeah, we seem to say that a lot, but … it’s true. Remember when she was with Lamar, back when things were good, and everyone watched them try to have a baby and it never worked out? “Poor Khloe.” And then when Lamar started going off the rails and he publicly stated that he cheated on her in that humiliating video? “Poor Khloe.” When she filed for divorce, then when he had his overdose and nearly died, and then when she stopped the divorce proceedings so that she could help him? You get the picture. It looked like things were going well for her for a while after that — the divorce was finally finalized, she had a few relationships that didn’t end horribly, and then she got with Tristan Thompson, who she thought she was going to marry . And we all know how that turned out. Khloe got pregnant, and just days before she gave birth, everyone found out that Tristan had been cheating on her . She stayed for nearly a year after that, trying to make things work, but then he cheated with Jordyn Woods , Kylie Jenner’s best friend and a friend of Khloe’s as well. That was the last straw, and now she’s a single mom. So how are things going now? Apparently they’re not too much different than before in many ways, because Khloe and True are still living in L.A. while Tristan does his basketball thing. So it’s not like he was a super present father and now she’s going it alone. And that’s good, but recent reports have been claiming that Tristan’s taking it a step farther, and that he’s just not involved with True whatsoever . We heard one of those reports a few days ago — a source said that Khloe was “extremely upset” because “he isn’t really making an effort to be involved in their daughter True’s life.” He lives in Cleveland for work, and he is busy what with being in the NBA and all, and Khloe understands that. But unfortunately, “she just feels that Tristan has moved on.” “Tristan’s attitude seems to be, ‘I will see True when I see her,'” the insider explained, which obviously isn’t a great outlook. All of this was very easy to believe, because as sad as it is, we just can’t see Tristan going out of his way to be a good dad. With all we’ve seen from him, it seems like hooking up with a wide variety of ladies is definitely number one on his list of priorities. But Khloe got on Twitter this weekend, and she was quick to come to Tristan’s defense. No, seriously. Someone tweeted her about the rumors about Tristan that we just discussed, telling her “Hunny keep raising your daughter the best way you know how.” “All she needs is her mom. You’re doing great. Keep ya head up.” “Thank you love!” Khloe responded. “You’re so very sweet.” “But he is a good dad to her. My sweet and special baby True will NEVER be put in the middle of him and I. I can promise that.” That’s sweet, and we do believe that she’s always going to do her best to save True from any drama going on between her and Tristan. The only thing is that Khloe has a bit of a history of trying to see the absolute best in Tristan , no matter what his actions are, so there’s a chance that “he is a good dad” part may be wishful thinking. Lori Loughlin to Daughter: HA! I Totally Paid for Your Education!

Lori Loughlin has been caught on camera admitting to the crime for which she just got arrested. Sort of, that is. In a newly-surfaced video from 2017, the controversial actress and her teenager daughter, Olivia Jade, are recording footage for the latter's YouTube channel. In a video titled “TEACHING MY MOM SLANG TERMS OF 2017,” Olivia, who was 17 at the time, tell the Full House star of the phrase, “England is my city,” something made famous when fellow YouTuber Nick Crompton sang these words in Jake Paul‘s “It’s Everyday Bro.”) “England is NOT a city,” Loughlin tells her ignorant child in response, to which Olivia replies: “I know, that’s why it’s so, so, so iconic on YouTube! … Well, it’s not iconic at all, it’s just really dumb.” This whole conversation is really dumb, but it's also about to become very telling. Loughlin, who was arrested this week for her role in a nationwide college bribery scandal , then says: “If you would’ve said, ‘England is my city,’ I would say, ‘Why did I pay all this money for your education?'” At this joke, he mother-daughter duo laugh and laugh and then laugh some more. But few people are guffawing over pretty much this exact same thing right now. Loughlin and her husband were each indicted by the FBI a few days ago because they allegedly paid a $500,000 bribe to pretend Olivia and her sister were high school crew team members. They were subsequently admitted to the University of Southern California because an employee there listed them as potential athletic recruits, thereby lowering their admissions standards. Loughlin and actress Felicity Huffman were the two best-known individuals involved in an arrested that netted dozens of wealthy parents, all of whom are accused of lying, cheating and bribing their kids' way into college. Olivia Jade has since left USC, at which she barely studied, while  Loughlin has since lost multiple jobs , including her role as leading lady on Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart. “We are saddened by the recent news surrounding the college admissions allegations,” Crown Media Family Networks said in a statement, adding: “We are no longer working with Lori Loughlin and have stopped development of all productions that air on the Crown Media Family Network channels involving Lori Loughlin including Garage Sale Mysteries, an independent third party production.” Olivia, for her part, lost her brand deal with Sephora. “After careful review of recent developments, we have made the decision to end the Sephora Collection partnership with Olivia Jade, effective immediately,” a spokesperson for the beauty company has said. Olivia Jade, Lori Loughlin’s Entitled Daughter, Once Crapped All Over College

According to a new federal indictment, Olivia Jade Giannulli is only a student at the Universoty of Southern California because her famous mother was at the center of a massive college bribery scandal. That’s a sentence we didn’t expect to write when we woke up today. Alas, here we are. In an explosive story that is blowing up the Internet, Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman have been arrested for their alleged role in a giant, multi-million dollar blackmail scheme. The actresses have been charged with conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud. These charges stem from allegations that Loughlin and Hoffman paid money to a man in California… who then used this money to bribe various SAT and ACT proctors and/or to bribe college coaches. In what manner? Well… According to ABC News, Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli “agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team — despite the fact that they did not participate in crew — thereby facilitating their admission to USC.” Details of The Fuller House star’s role include having daughter Olivia actually pose on a rowing machine in order to make it look like she was a crew member in high school. Even though she was not. This photo (and some of the money Loughlin coughed up) were then sent to a crew coach at USC, who lied to the college, labeled Olivia as a crew recruit and helped her get into the prestigious university. Olivia, by all accounts, was aware of the scam at the time. An aspiring actress, the 19-year old has been featured alongside her mother in numerous Hallmark Christmas movies — and she also has nearly two million subscribers on YouTube. The entire scandal is a pretty despicable example of how rich people get their way in America… … but it’s made even worse by how Olivia Jade has apparently responded to the allegedly illegal way in which she was granted entry into USC. While answering fan questions last year, Olivia said she wasn’t sure how she planned to balance her social media career while taking classes as a freshman at this university. “I don’t know how much of school I’m gonna attend but I’m gonna go in and talk to my deans and everyone, and hope that I can try and balance it all,” she told followers, explaining: “But I do want the experience of like game days, partying…I don’t really care about school, as you guys all know.” So, just to be clear, Loughlin paid $500,000 in bribery money so that her daughter could party a lot and try really hard to balance her life as a SOCIAL MEDIA PERSONALITY with her role as a student of higher education. Olivia Jade: Sorry for Saying College is Dumb! Olivia faced backlash at the time she said this, long before the details of her scam became known to the public. “I honestly found it very disappointing when you said you care more about parties and tailgates rather than your education. If you hate school so much why go to college?” one commenter said. “And it’s honestly insulting when tons of people can’t even afford to go to college but want to.” Olivia replied to this criticism with the video above, in which she said: “I said something super ignorant and stupid, basically. And it totally came across that I’m ungrateful for college — I’m going to a really nice school. And it just kind of made it seem like I don’t care, I just want to brush it off. “I’m just gonna be successful at YouTube and not have to worry about school. I’m really disappointed in myself.” “I didn’t mean it that way,” she added. “I’m sorry for anyone I offended by saying that. I know it’s a privilege and a blessing and I’m really grateful.” Simply put…we don’t believe her. USC’s President Wanda M. Austin, meanwhile, sent an email to students after the news broke on Tuesday. “I want to inform you of an ongoing wide-ranging criminal investigation involving universities nationwide, including USC.  “The government has made a public announcement and disseminated the charging documents,” the email reads. “The federal government has alleged that USC is a victim in a scheme perpetrated against the university by a long-time Athletics Department employee, one current coach and three former coaching staff, who were allegedly involved in a college admissions scheme and have been charged by the government on multiple charges.”

First Black Man To Earn Ph.D. In Chemistry Honored By American Chemical Society

A n African-American STEM pioneer was finally honored for breaking barriers in the realm of science. Saint Elmo Brady —the first Black man to receive a doctorate degree in chemistry—had a National Historical Chemical Landmark dedicated to him by the American Chemical Society, the Journal for Blacks in Higher Education reported. Leaders at the American Chemical Society believe it’s crucial that Brady’s journey and contributions to STEM don’t go unsung. The organization’s 2018 President Peter K. Dorhout believes that Brady’s story will serve as inspiration for the next generation of Black STEM leaders. “This landmark designation recognizes the outstanding accomplishments and leadership impact that Dr. Brady has had on the chemical profession,” said Dorhout in a statement, according to the news outlet. “I am proud to be an alumnus of the university that was part of his legacy — dreaming, designing and executing the creation of four outstanding and impactful chemistry programs that have each worked to ensure access to higher education and the chemical professions for so many young African-American men and women over the last century.” There was a designation ceremony that was held on February 5. A Louisville native, Dr. Brady received his bachelor’s degree in 1908 from Fisk University. Four years after graduating, he went on to pursue his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois. Throughout his career, he held teaching roles at Tuskegee University, Tougaloo College, Howard University, and Fisk University. He chaired the chemistry departments at his alma mater Fisk and at Howard University as well. The University of Illinois isn’t the only institution that will receive a plaque dedicated to Dr. Brady. Other universities and colleges that he left a mark on will as well; including Fisk University, Tuskegee University, Howard University, and Tougaloo College. HBCU Wins $1.6 Million Grant To Help Develop Black Professionals For Space Industry

M organ State University won a three-year, $1.6 million Aerospace Workforce and Leadership Development Grant from the nonprofit Base 11, the university announced on Monday. The award will fund a state-of-the-art rocketry lab and launch a student rocketry team. See Also: Disrupt Harlem Code Squad Empowers Youth Through Tech Education It will also enable the historically Black university to help fill the job pipeline in what is predicted to become a nearly $3 trillion commercial space industry that lacks diversity. According to the National Science Foundation, African Americans make up just 5 percent of the science and engineering workforce. Morgan State University President Dr.  David Wilson issued this statement: “We are honored that Morgan State University was selected for this competitive grant, and confident that it will further advance our efforts to increase diversity in the STEM talent pipeline, while also turning out workforce-ready talent in high-demand industries like aerospace. Today, the nonprofit Base 11 announced that Morgan State U is the winner of a three-year, $1.6 million Aerospace Workforce and Leadership Development Grant, which will fund a state-of-the-art rocketry lab & launch a student rocketry team. #MorganOnSocial https://t.co/RgvLLd9h8B pic.twitter.com/MyTUYdz5Zk — Morgan State University (@MorganStateU) February 11, 2019 Several years have passed since the tech industry came under fire for its lack of diversity. Little has changed despite its efforts. Facebook Global Director of Diversity  Maxine Williams   admitted in 2017 that the pace of change for her company had been slow. Women represented 35 percent of Facebook’s workforce—a 2 percent increase from the previous year. And the company added just 1 percent of Hispanic and African-American employees year-over-year. As poor as that sounds, the tech industry overall had a decline in the number of Black and Hispanic employees. Apple’s diversity report  stated that the company worldwide was 68 percent male. Here in the United States, the tech giant was 56 percent White, 19 percent Asian, 12 percent Hispanic and 9 percent Black. “We want to ensure that the next generation of space innovators is just as diverse as America,” said African-American former NASA astronaut Leland Melvin  who was on hand to present the check. “I am excited to see this generation of students getting critical hands-on experience in rocket technology, and I encourage Morgan State’s students to seize this incredible opportunity to reach for the stars.” The grant will fund the build-out of a liquid-fuel rocketry lab at Morgan State, as well as the recruitment and hiring of an aerospace faculty leader to create a world-class liquid fuel rocketry program. Morgan State aims to bring together these elements to successfully build and launch a liquid fuel rocket that reaches 150,000 feet by 2022. “At Morgan we encourage our students to be bold and to aim for the stars, and with the launch of this program, we can provide them with the resources to take on that challenge literally,” Wilson added. And now, t he Oscar-nominated film will be returning to theaters for Black History Month with the added benefit of spreading news of a $1.5 million grant program from the United Negro College Fund. EW.com reports : One day after Black Panther won the top film prize at the SAG Awards, Disney announced that the Marvel blockbuster will be returning to theaters for one week. Black Panther will screen at select AMC Theatres locations between Feb. 1 and 7 — and in celebration of Black History Month, tickets will be free. In addition to the free screenings, Disney revealed that it will give a $1.5 million grant to the United Negro College Fund, which provides scholarships to help minority students attend college. “Black Panther is groundbreaking for many reasons, including the rich diversity of voices behind its success,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said in a statement. “The story also showcases the power of knowledge to change the world for the better, and the importance of ensuring everyone has access to it. We’re proud to provide thousands of free screenings of Black Panther in hopes it will continue to inspire audiences, and to support UNCF with a $1.5 million grant to make the dream of higher education a reality for more students.” How dope is that? Seriously?! Teacher Fired For Making Black Students Play Slaves In Class Is Now Suing For Reverse Discrimination

Source: Kazunori Nagashima / Getty Teacher Fired Over Slavery Lesson Plans To Sue For $1 Billion A white public school teacher is planning to sue New York City for $1 billion after she was fired over a controversial lesson on slavery. Patricia Cummings was fired back in October after complaints about the highly unorthodox teaching method, which left some students feeling humiliated and singled out. She was accused of having black students lie on the floor while she stepped on their backs among other things, leading to her demise. But on Thursday, Cummings insisted that she initiated the lesson in her class at MS 118 in the Bronx in good faith–and only one student and her parent out of the entire class objected. Her firing–and all of the online criticism to go with it–has rendered this woman permanently unemployable, she said at a press conference alongside her lawyer, Thomas Liotti. “I have no career at this point,” she claimed. Cummings filed a $120 million lawsuit in Suffolk County, where she lives, against a slew of defendants ranging from the city Department of Education to Mayor Bill de Blasio to media outlets. But Liotti said they plan to build a $1 billion class-action case with other teachers claiming similar forms of reverse discrimination. Cummings said she was initially cleared after an internal school investigation but that the case was revived after media reports on the incident. The teacher also said her suit will be supported by the testimony of a black teacher at the school who witnessed the lesson and reportedly found it effective. Sure, Jan. “That 20 seconds of a teachable moment changed my life,” she said, also adding that she was bombarded with emails calling for her murder and dubbing her a racist. “Anyone who has met me knows I don’t have that bone in my body,” she claimed. “I was brought up — you treat everybody the way you want to be treated.” Liotta argued on Thursday that the lesson only drew objections because of his client’s race.“How does the City of New York expect to attract effective teachers when people like Patricia Cummings have to go through this kind of abuse? It’s outrageous.” The Education Department initially reassigned Cummings before firing her after an investigation, according to agency spokesman Doug Cohen. “Ms. Cummings was terminated based on a thorough investigation and a review of her performance as an educator,” Cohen said Thursday. “We’ll review the complaint.” Continue reading →

N early six decades after breaking racial barriers in the NHL, an athlete is finally receiving the recognition that he has long deserved. 83-year-old Willie O’Ree —the first Black player in the National Hockey League—will be inducted into the league’s Hall of Fame on Monday, the New York Times reported. O’Ree, 83, the league’s first black player, is being honored not just for the historical significance of his career, but also for his decades of working with young players all over North America https://t.co/mXvQ8w2rpc — NYT Sports (@NYTSports) November 10, 2018 O’Ree entered the league in 1958 and played for the Boston Bruins, the news outlet writes. During his career—which lasted for 24 seasons—he encountered the unthinkable all due to the color of his skin. There was an incident where during a brawl an opponent knocked his teeth out with a hockey stick and there was another time where unruly fans attempted to pull him into the stands and attack him. “I heard that N-word so many times that I just let it go in one ear and out the other,” O’Ree told the news outlet. “I never fought because of racial slurs or remarks. I fought because guys speared me, butt-ended me, crosschecked me and things of that nature. Otherwise I would have spent every game in the penalty box.” Despite those obstacles, O’Ree persevered because he knew that stepping on the ice to compete was something bigger than him and he was breaking barriers for Black athletes who would follow in his footsteps. After retiring from hockey, O’Ree spearheaded several youth programs in an effort to diversify the sport. O’Ree’s legacy has inspired the generations of Black athletes who have come behind him. “Willie O’Ree’s story must not be forgotten,” Karl Subban , a father of three Black NHL draft picks, told Sports Illustrated . “He has made it possible for my boys to have the NHL dream and to believe they could achieve it. He changed hockey which is now for everyone. Hockey needed him and so does the Hockey Hall of Fame. The time is right!” There remains a lack of diversity in the NHL. According to the New York Times , 97 percent of the league is white.
