Tupac’s Belongings To Be Donated To Temple University

T he late rapper Tupac Shakur ’s impact and influence spanned far beyond the music industry. Shakur was known for using his platform to bring attention to issues faced by the Black community. 22 years after his tragic death, Temple University is paying homage to the rapper by adding some of his belongings to their Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection, USA Today reported. A collection of items belonging to the late Tupac Shakur—including jewelry and several handwritten documents—are now part of the @BlocksonTU Collection. https://t.co/XrIVyf1g8G — Temple University (@TempleUniv) November 1, 2018 The collection—which is known for being one of the most extensive collections of items that captures the essence of the Black experience in America and beyond—has nearly 500,000 items, the news outlet writes. Amongst Tupac’s items that will be added include handwritten lyrics from some of his most popular songs, handwritten track listings and his jewelry. All the items were donated by Goldin Auctions of Runnemede. The Philadelphia-based university offers a course that explores the legacy of Shakur. “He’s a hip-hop icon,” Diane Turner , a curator of the Blockson collection said in a statement, according to the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education . “This is a significant, contemporary addition to our already impressive collection of music items, ranging from African instruments to material from John Coltrane, Grover Washington Jr. and Natalie Hinderas. We are thrilled.” News about the donation comes shortly after the 22nd anniversary of his first posthumous album Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory . Brown University To Rename Building After First Black Graduates

O ver a century ago Ethel Tremaine Robinson and Inman Edward Page broke racial barriers at Brown University by becoming some of the first Black students to graduate from the institution. Now, the two will be honored by the Ivy League school with a building named after them, the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education reported. To celebrate the legacies of two pioneering black graduates, Brown University will rename its J. Walter Wilson Building in recognition of Inman Edward Page and Ethel Tremaine Robinson. #BrownBAR18 https://t.co/R5PhpiPy10 — Brown University (@BrownUniversity) September 23, 2018 The university will rename the J. Walter Wilson Building—which sits in a central part of campus—to pay homage to Robinson and Page, the news outlet writes. The building, which opened 56 years ago, initially housed life science laboratories. A few years ago, after being renovated, it transformed into a space where students can get a range of different services; spanning from financial aid help to mail services. Both Robinson and Page made their marks in the realm of education respectively. Robinson led literature and English courses at Howard University and guided one of her students to help her launch Alpha Kappa Alpha which is the country’s first Black sorority. Page went on to serve as president at historically Black colleges and universities, including the Lincoln Institute, the Agricultural and Normal University, Roger Williams University, and Western Baptist College. “Inman Page was born into slavery, sought liberty and opportunity and found them at Brown — and he saw the power of education to cultivate the innate ‘genius’ in everyone,” Brown University President Christina Paxson said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “Ethel Robinson broke a color barrier and a glass ceiling when she graduated from Brown in 1905. Together, these two pioneers embodied the faith in learning, knowledge and understanding that has animated Brown for generations.” The building is slated to be officially renamed in 2019. The news surrounding the renaming of the building comes just weeks after it was announced that students and faculty at the University of Mississippi are leading an effort to rename their journalism school after Civil Rights advocate, journalist, and educator Ida B. T he Black community has felt the wrath of racial bias when trying to generate upward mobility in America. We’re hit hard by the ever-growing racial wealth gap where for every $100 in white family wealth, African Americans only hold $5.04. Many of us have also experienced the impact of institutionalized racism when applying for loans, seeking jobs, and trying to further our education. Shawn D. Rochester , financial literacy expert and author of the acclaimed book The Black Tax: The Cost of Being Black in America , is aiming to change the narrative about Black wealth by educating and empowering our communities. Rochester—who has dedicated his career to teaching disenfranchised groups how to progress financially—believes that overcoming the racial wealth gap starts with exposing individuals to the basics of financial literacy and circulating the Black dollar in Black communities. “We are missing 6 million jobs, 1.4 million businesses with staff and over $8 trillion of net worth in the Black Community. The Black Tax provides that understanding in a powerful and paradigm shifting, data-driven way and lays out an economic framework that we can use to address these massive gaps,” said Rochester in a statement. “We have spent far too much time focusing almost exclusively on civil and social issues, it is time to focus on economic advancement, business development and employment in our community specifically.” Rochester will delve into the impact of racism—both past and present—at an upcoming black economic empowerment breakfast hosted by the Harlem Business Alliance ; a non-profit organization focused on education, equity, and entrepreneurship. “When it comes to accumulating wealth in America, there has never been a level playing field for the Black Community. We are calling on community leaders, influencers and entrepreneurs to rally their base,” said Regina Smith , Executive Director, Harlem Business Alliance. “The systemic and institutionalized racism stemming from centuries of slavery and the Jim Crow era continues to have a devastating impact on our community.” The breakfast is slated to take place on October 17. There has been a major push to economically empower the Black community. Entrepreneur Sheena Allen , 29, launched an online banking platform called CapWay as an avenue to help underserved communities learn more about the importance of financial literacy. National Park Service Grants HBCUs $8.6M To Conserve Historic Sites

T he National Park Service is continuing to preserve landmarks that are embedded in the fabric of American history. According to Diverse Issues in Higher Education , the agency recently provided 18 historically Black colleges and universities with grants in efforts to conserve historic buildings and statues that live on campuses. National Park Service Awards $8.6M to HBCUs for Preservation Projects https://t.co/1U3qithspS #HBCU #HBCUnews — HBCU Lifestyle (@HBCU_Lifestyle) September 10, 2018 The grants—which total $8.6 million—will be put towards the revitalization of structures as well as projects that are relative to preservation, the news outlet writes. The grant money was provided through the National Park Service’s Historic Preservation Fund. Amongst the HBCUs selected for the grants are Howard University, Clark Atlanta University, Hampton University, Virginia State University, Delaware State University and others. “HBCUs have played an important role in our country’s pursuit of equality, civil rights, and higher education for all Americans,” National Park Service Deputy Director P. Daniel Smith said in a statement, according to the news outlet. “These grants will help restore and enhance landmark buildings that are a source of pride on campuses in nine states.” Howard University plans on using the grant to upgrade their Founders Library. There has been a concerted effort to involve HBCUs in preserving Black sites across the country. In July, a program dubbed “Preservation in Practice” was created by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the National Park Service and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation as an avenue to empower students at historically Black colleges and universities to pursue careers in historic preservation. C oming of age as a young woman of color comes with several obstacles for many. Many Black and brown girls across the country are disproportionately impacted by poverty, education inequality, unjust treatment within their schools, sexual harassment at higher rates than other races and other problematic circumstances that negatively affect their daily lives. The Power of You Teens —a New York City-based non-profit organization—was created as an avenue to empower girls of color and show them that their circumstances don’t determine the heights that they can reach. Founded in 2014 by Felicia Gibson Jaycox , the organization was designed to help girls between the ages of 12 and 18 build a strong sense of self-esteem. POYT aims to nurture and empower the next generation’s leaders so that they are equipped to make an impact in their communities and beyond. The organization offers mentorship opportunities for girls where they are given guidance from women who are making moves in their respective fields and monthly group workshops that are designed to help girls cultivate a strong self-image, deal with anxiety, and learn how to set goals. POYT gives its participants the opportunity to pay it forward by participating in volunteer projects in their local communities. The program also exposes girls to arts education and STEM through workshops. Each year POYT hosts The Empowerment Experience in Harlem; a free day-long event that features inspirational speakers, workshops and seminars, information about higher education and different career paths, entertainment, and a marketplace. The purpose of the event is to inspire young girls to reach their full potential. This year’s theme is “The Future is Female.” “While girls of color have made progress in recent years, real challenges remain. We recognize powerful girls grow up to be secure and confident women setting the stage for their futures as innovative leaders,” Gibson Jaycox told NewsOne. “Our programs are designed to combat the negative influences many young women face. We want girls to be brave and walk boldly in their power. We want girls to be agents of change so they can make a positive impact in their community and the world.” The next The Power of You Teens Empowerment Experience is slated to take place on October 6 in Harlem, New York. This Alabama County Has Never Had An Integrated School Until Now

O ne county in Alabama was finally moving forward with stopping segregation in its schools. The first integrated school in Sumter County finally made its debut on Monday, ushering in a new era after a painful past. The University Charter School (UCS) opened its doors to serve students from kindergarten to eighth grade in the city of Livingston, AL.com reported. Both white and Black students — more than half of the 300-plus students were Black while a little less than a half were white — sat and learned in classrooms. UCS made history with having a better balance of a diverse student body. No other school in the county has even come close to UCS’ more equitable ratio of white and Black students, according to historical enrollment documents. The UCS ratio shed light on the county’s demographics, which is 76 percent Black and 24 percent white, according to the latest U.S. Census  data. The county was also the poorest one in the state. The 1969 federal court decision that ordered integration to come to Sumter — 15 years after the landmark Brown vs. Board of Education decision — spurred white students to create their own private schools called “segregation academies.” As those private “academies” spread, Sumter’s public school district became predominantly Black. Parents were stuck with a choice of sending their kids to an all-white private institution or a largely Black public school. However, that hasn’t stopped strong integration pushes, which have led to the creation of UCS. A circuit county judge gave the green light for the school’s opening last month, beginning to clear the way for the painful segregation struggle to end and a more intertwined community to emerge.
