School Blues: Is Your Child Being Treated And Graded Fairly?

After a particularly frustrating week with some the teaching staff at my son’s school, I happened to stumble upon a short video titled “The System of Racial Inequality.” In this just over 60 second soundbyte, a white woman, Tilman Smith, who has experience in the education system, pretty much confirmed my greatest concern with a certain race of teacher and my son. Her brief dialogue was alarming when describing the way white teachers tend to judge children based simply on race of school-aged black boys in particular. Smith gave an example and explained how white teachers would think highly of an “animated and cheeky” white boy in the class, label him “smart” and would all but dismiss his behavior because, “boys will be boys.” On the other hand, however, if a black child in the class displayed the same behavior she wouldn’t be so quick to think his “animated and cheeky” demeanor is smart but instead would raise an eyebrow and take mental note that, “I might need to keep an eye on him…” [ MadameNoire ] Would You Get A Tattoo At Whole Foods? Black Student Group Demands Univ. Of California Divest From Prisons

Higher education has always been promoted as the best way to address most, if not all, of the Black community’s social and economic ills. But what if our personal quest for empowerment is actually helping to drive the school-to-prison pipeline? It is a question that some college students at the University of California have begun weighing and organizing around. More specifically, the student group, which calls itself the Afrikan Black Coalition (ABC), released a report last month on its website, revealing how the UC system, which includes 10 campuses across the state, is “an indirect investor of private prisons through mutual funds-managed by outside investment bankers.” Well, according to the ABC report, the UC system has allegedly invested $25 million in both the Corrections Corporation of America and private prison provider The Geo Group…In response to its own findings, the student group has decided to take action against the university… [ MadameNoire ] NYU Admin Prospective Student: If You Can’t Afford $65 Application Fee How Will You Pay $60K Tuition? Joshua Jackson is drawing much-needed attention to the exorbitant cost of higher education in America, not to mention the elitism and subtle racism that underlies much of that cost. The Black cartoonist gained Internet fame over the weekend when he exposed an NYU administrator for a rather out of pocket response to his request for the $65 application fee into one of the school’s master’s programs be waived. Jackson was interested in applying to the Tisch School of the Arts’ Art & Public Policy master’s program… Whatever enthusiasm Jackson had about this program dwindled significantly when he was basically told he’s too poor to help other poor people. BOSSIP Exclusive: Morehouse President Announces New Online Portal To Bring Higher Ed To Students In Africa

NEW YORK, NY – SEPTEMBER 29: President of Morehouse College John Wilson Jr. speaks on stage The Africa-America Institute hosts Future Leaders Legacy Fund Awards gala on September 29, 2015 in New York City. (Photo by Eugene Gologursky/Getty Images for The Africa-America Institute) Morehouse President John Wilson Said Africa’s Education Gap Must Be Addressed So Young People Aren’t Left Behind Morehouse College President John Wilson Jr. announced the school is working to create an online portal to reach the growing number of African students with little access to education. “We’re going to begin a new initiative, an online initiative, with some of the powerhouses in America,” Wilson said Tuesday night at the Africa-America Institute’s awards gala in Manhattan. “And we’re going to try to get at the 400 million youths in Africa, to give them a better head start than they would otherwise get, to supplement the educational infrastructure in Africa. And that’s Morehouse College in partnership with many others.” With half of Africa’s 830 million people under the age of 15, and just 700 universities on the continent compared with more than 6,000 in the U.S., Wilson said Africa’s education system simply couldn’t handle the glut of students that will soon swell its ranks. “There are 5.2 million students in higher education in Africa,” he said, “with 300 to 400 million in the pipeline, on deck, something must be done.” Morehouse’s portal project is a partnership between the historically black institution and Strive Masiyiwa, head of global telecom Econet Wireless, as well as others, Wilson said. The college president made the announcement right before he presented a business leadership award to Masiyiwa, who in 2012 launched a scholarship fund at Morehouse to send African students to school there. Wilson didn’t get into details in front of the crowd – which included former NBA player Dikembe Mutombo, Namibian president H.E. Dr. Hage G. Geingob and former Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo – but he promised there was more to come. “Stay tuned for a major announcement about that later,” he said. The event raised money to send African students to top universities both in the U.S. and Africa. Hit the flip for more from the gala:

Bish, Be Gone: Gilbert Arenas Files “Stay Away” Order Against Laura Govan

Gilbert Arenas Files Stay Away Order Against Laura Govan Gilbert Arenas and Laura Govan have been thru 7 levels of hell throughout their tumultuous relationship but it looks like he’s finally had enough of the bull$#!t and is putting matters in the hands of the court. If you recall, we reported that Gil wants Laura and the kids evicted from their L.A. home ASAP. That request came after Laura’s leaked emails revealed that Gilbert gave her STDs and laid hands on her numerous times. The folks at BallerAlert have obtained copies of a “stay away” order that Gilbert filed against his perpetually angry baby mama. The filing pretty much states that Laura Govan can’t sneeze, cough, bat eyelashes, or drink a Starbucks anywhere in Gil’s general vicinity. If it isn’t about their kids, she is ordered to stay her azz away from him or risk being hit with a formal restraining order. Among the many stipulations listed in the doc, Laura must complete an anger management class on some Evelyn Lozada s#!t. Laura is probably tiiiight. Flip the page to see the entire court document.

A Lil Positivity: Michelle Obama Brings Girl Power To Harlem

Glamour Hosts “The Power Of An Educated Girl” With First Lady Michelle Obama The First Lady Said Educating Girls Was One Of The Biggest Challenges Facing The Globe First Lady Michelle Obama came to Harlem Tuesday to spread the message that all girls deserve access to education. On the heels of launching her #62MillionGirls education campaign, Obama joined actress Charlize Theron, former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Glamour magazine editor Cindi Lieve at the Apollo Theater for a panel on the need to teach millions of girls around the world who were not in school. “It’s my mission,” Obama said, “to make sure that every girl on the planet has the same opportunity that I’ve had, that my daughters have, and I want to make sure that all of you, here in the United States, are taking advantage of the opportunities you have as well. I want you to be that hungry, to get your education, because it’s going to be the key to your future.”’ Glamour Hosts “The Power Of An Educated Girl” With First Lady Michelle Obama. (L-R) Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Founder of Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project and U.N. Messenger of Peace Charlize Theron, First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, Girl ambassador from Plan International Nurfahada and Glamour’s Editor-in-Chief Cindi Leive. More than 1,000 school girls packed the Apollo Theater in Harlem for the chat, where Obama said it’s critical that the 62 million girls around the world who were not in school get back into the classroom. “I believe that world poverty, world hunger, health issues —all of this stuff, lies in the empowerment of young women, young girls,” said Obama, whose government-led initiative, Let Girls Learn, uses community-based programs to get and keep girls in school. Tuesday’s talk had no shortage of star power: Chicago PD actress Sophia Bush kicked off the event with a speech about how her time in school opened her eyes to life’s possibilities, and pop stars Nico and Vinz brought the crowd to their feet with their hit song, “Am I Wrong.” But Obama was the one the girls came to see, and they gave her a standing ovation as she walked out onto the Apollo Theater stage. “You are our next future leaders, our entrepreneurs, our mothers,” the First Lady told the crowd. “This is no joke. This issue is probably one of the most important issues we should be tackling on the planet.” Glamour Hosts “The Power Of An Educated Girl” With First Lady Michelle Obama Obama said girls aren’t in school because of issues like teen pregnancy, poverty, early marriage and relatives who don’t see the need to teach females. Gillard, who was Australia’s first female Prime Minister when she served from 2010 to 2013, said girls who stay in school longer are less likely to enter forced marriages or be teenage moms. “Nations that we think now of as places of poverty and places of disorder, could be on a path to peace and prosperity because we’re educating the children, especially, girls,” Gillard said. Teaching girls around the world is an important cause for Theron, who said education would help stem the AIDS scourge ravaging her native South Africa. “For me, it’s more personal coming from a country where more people are living with HIV/AIDS than anywhere else in the world,” Theron said. “Education is actually saving lives.” As the talk wound down, one student in the audience asked what the panelists thought about the idea that boys liked girls who weren’t that smart. Obama’s response? Keep your heads in your books. “There is no boy at this age, that is cute enough or interesting enough to stop you from getting your education,” the First Lady said. “If I had worried about who liked me and who thought I was cute at your age, I wouldn’t be married to the President of the United States.”

Race Matters: HBCU ‘All-Stars’ Prove That Historically Black Colleges Are NOT Inferior To Predominately White Institutions

HBCU All-Stars Prove That Historically Black Colleges Are Necessary In America Thinking about attending a HBCU but heard some misconceptions about the experience ? The U.S. Department of Education recently announced the 2015 HBCU All-Stars, a group of undergraduate, master’s and professional students at historically black colleges and universities. U.S. News recently spoke with some of the 2015 HBCU All-Stars about common lies and misconceptions that some have about historically black schools and what it’s really like to attend one. Jamie Binns, junior at Talladega College: Binns didn’t always plan on going to an HBCU, but after getting into and later enrolling at Talladega College in Alabama, he’s grateful for the experience. “I would like to think that my HBCU has done well for me and has been able to afford me a lot of opportunities,” says Binns, who is president of his school’s student government association, a member of the track and field team and a member of the presidential honor society. He wants people to realize that historically black colleges can be just as challenging as any other. “An HBCU experience, or an HBCU education rather, is not inferior to a predominantly white institution,” says Binns. HBCUs have had prestigious alumni go out and do great things, he says. And he’s right. Some of these alumni, which come from various black colleges, include film director Spike Lee, author Toni Morrison and civil rights activist Jesse L. Jackson Sr. Angelica Willis, junior at North Carolina A&T State University: Before becoming an undergrad, Angelica Willis knew some of the professors at North Carolina A&T State University, where her mother also attended. When Willis arrived as a freshman, the school almost felt like home. “I love the family environment,” says Willis, who has a 4.0 GPA as a computer science major and mentors other students at the school. “It just seems so friendly and open.” Read more from the article HERE and discuss your thoughts on how HBCUs play a big part in the Black community in the comment section below.

Baby Mama Drama: Tia Kemp Says Her Kids Fear For Their Lives After Exposing Rick Ross As A Deadbeat Daddy

Rick Ross’ Second Baby Mama Says He Took Their Son’s Car Yesterday we reported that Rick Ross’ second baby mama Tia Kemp claimed that she and their son, William Roberts III, was forced to live a modest life because Ross’ child support weren’t enough. The baby mama blasted Ross for paying to maintain the luxurious lifestyle of his THOTS like Lira Galore instead of paying for the education of his own kids. Tia took to her IG last night and now claims that the Teflon Don took away their son’s car in retaliation of her recent baby daddy blast: Rick Ross claims that he’s not in the wrong because the whip is his! Via TMZ : Tia Kemp went HAM on Rick early Thursday … saying, “Rick Ross takes the car from his Son Again!!” — in a post that included a shot of their 9-year-old standing next to the BMW B7, just to tug at the heart strings. A source close to Rick tells TMZ … yeah, he took the car, but it’s not theft since Rick paid for it. The fact that Tia says it belongs to their son is kind of a stretch — we’re told Rick lets Tia use it to drive the kid to school, but it’s always been in Rick’s name. Still, Tia’s not having it. She’s spent all day posting pics of Rick with just about everyone — Jay Z, Diddy, LeBron James, T.I., and French Montana — begging them to convince Rick to give back the whip. Tia also claims that she and her children fear for their lives because Ross has threatened to run them out of Miami. Hit the flip for more from Ross’ distressed baby mama next…
