Study Shows Blacks Are More Likely To Take On Student Loan Debt And Default Than Whites

Blacks Are More Likely To Take On Student Loan Debt Than Whites U.S. congressman Elijah Cummings and Sen. Elizabeth Warren recently joined forces to discuss the issues with student loan debt in this country and break down the racial barriers when it comes to who is falling victim to the debt boom… Via The National Journal : Today the majority of all college students—at two-year and four-year, private and public institutions—rely on grants and loans to pay tuition. Americans now hold about $1.2 trillion in student debt, and right now most borrowers aren’t paying off their debts at all. Cummings and Warren are particularly concerned about the effect student debt has on African-American borrowers. “African-American students are more likely to take on debt—and more debt—than white, Latino, and Asian-American students,” Cummings said at the event. In 2013, 42 percent of African-American families had student loans, compared to 28 percent of white families, according to the Urban Institute, a Washington, D.C. think tank. That racial gap is driven by an enormous wealth disparity, Cummings said. The average African-American household has a total net worth of $11,000, according a Pew Research Center analysis. That’s not enough to pay for even a single semester at Howard, and it’s barely enough to cover a year of tuition at a public university like the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. In contrast, the average white family has a net worth of $141,900. The startling discrepancy in household wealth means that a white family and a black family can have the same income but a radically different financial situation. It’s a disparity rooted in history, as The Atlantic’s Ta-Nehisi Coates has explained, and it means that the average black family today essentially lives without a financial safety net. Student loans can be a lifeline, helping students finance college degrees even as tuition prices rise. Tyrone Hankerson, a current Howard senior, told forum attendees that he’s financing his education through a combination of scholarships, work-study aid, and a loan his parents took out on his behalf. After he graduates, he plans on going to law school. But loan payments can become a heavy burden. One Howard graduate, Latechia Mitchell, said that her undergraduate degree was largely financed by scholarships, but she took out $60,000 for graduate school and to get a teacher certification. Although she and her husband both have college degrees and professional jobs, they can afford to pay only the interest on their cumulative student debt. Discuss…

Paul Walker: Remembered, Celebrated at Furious 7 Premiere

As the cast of Furious 7 prepares for the movie’s long-awaited premiere this Friday, they are reminded of their lost co-star and “brother,” Paul Walker. Early Furious 7 reviews have been favorable, and the film is expected to gross close to a billion at the box office worldwide. But there remains a void. Tyrese Gibson, a fellow Fast and Furious franchise star, opened up to People about the loss of his co-star. Walker died in a car crash in late 2013. “He was truly an angel,” he said. “We were inspired to pick up the pieces and keep moving because it became ‘Let us do this on his behalf.'” “It’s really hard to do red carpets and have so many people walking up to you screaming … I’m just thinking to myself, ‘It’s not about me, it is so all about Paul .'” Later that day, in an Instagram post, Tyrese’s sentiments expressed sadness that film would premiere without Walker. In a photo of Paul, Gibson captioned, “It’s so hard to celebrate without you.” Cody Walker, Paul’s younger brother, was at the Wednesday evening premiere in Los Angeles. “I’m so happy with it,” Cody said. “I think Paul would be proud.” Cody is no stranger to the Fast and Furious crew, and they have been a source of support for him as his heals from Paul’s death. He stated, “I’ve known some of [the cast] for the last 15 years, but not at this level. I’ve just tripled my family in the last year.” Paul Walker’s daughter, Meadow Walker , was the recipient of her late father’s fortune. She was only 15 when he died. After his death, there was initial issue of custody and guardianship, headed by Paul’s mother, Cheryl. But at Meadow’s request, Cheryl dismissed the petition. Currently, Meadow, 16, lives with her mother, Rebecca Soteros. Gibson was happy to report that Meadow is “really in a great space.” He added: “She’s really focused on her education and just spending a lot of quality time with her friends. That brings her a lot of joy.” It’s only been a year since Walker died. On the anniversary of his death, Meadow posted a heartbreaking Instagram photo of Paul holding her in his lap. The caption simply said, “I love you.” After the trailer for the film aired, she posted another Instagram photo, with Paul lovingly looking at her as she stuck her tongue out at him. At the time, he was in the midst of filming The Fast and the Furious 7. His brothers Cody and Caleb stepped in and doubled as Walker for the film’s completion. Noting the difficultly of doubling for their brother, Gibson said, “It could not have been easy for [Cody and Caleb] … to step in for their brother who we just lost. I have a bunch of new heroes from being a part of this project. It feels like the most beautiful sending off you’ll ever see.” As the cast of the movie has been promoting the film, the love they have shown for their co-star is unprecedented. So much, that Walker’s friend and co-star Vin Diesel named his newborn baby after the fallen star. Remembering Paul Walker (1973-2013) 1. The Voice Season 8 Episode 2 Recap: Errrbody Get Turnt (Around in Chairs)

The Voice Season 8 Episode 2 saw a crop of aspiring singing sensations compete for the musical attention of Christina, Pharrell, Blake and Adam on NBC. After The Voice Season 8 premiere introduced us to some of the spring campaign’s most promising stars, the sophomore installment did more of the same. Let’s meet them, shall we? Anthony Riley can get on up to join Team Pharrell thanks to his performance of James Brown’s “I Got You (I Feel Good).” All four judges turned in seconds! Blaze Johnson joined Team Adam with a rendition of The Fray’s “How to Save a Life” that managed to get two chairs turned, even if it was a bit uneven. Brooke Adee and her cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love” earned a spot on Team Blake. Might we have another teenage star on our hands (she’s 16))? Gabriel Wolfchild won a place on Team Christina, shunning Adam and Blake,  after his take on a folk staple, Bob Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right.” Mia Z performed B.B. King’s “The Thrill Is Gone,” a cover that needed work but featured enough range, tone and power to win a place on Team Pharrell. Deanna Johnson put her all into a rendition of Kodaline’s “All I Want,” and the returning auditioner got it done this time, securing a spot on Team Adam. Joe Tolo is now a card-carrying member of Team Christina, choosing Aguilera over Blake Shelton after belting out The Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody.” Tonya Boyd-Cannon and her prison choir background (seriously) made the bold song choice of Pharrell’s “Happy,” and was more than happy to join … Adam’s team. And there you have it. The Voice Season 8: Top Blind Auditions 13. Rob Taylor View Video Rob Taylor is a 22-year old from Louisiana.
