Banks Made Over $32 BILLION In Overdraft Fees Last Year Yes, BILLION! According to NBC News: Bank customers may complain about hefty overdraft fees, but they’re using the service more and paying the price. A new report from Moebs Services, a respected economic research firm, shows overdraft revenue at banks, credit unions and thrift institutions totaled $32 billion last year. That’s an increase of $400 million or 1.3 percent from 2011. “Consumers use of overdrafts shows no indication of going away, and is actually increasing,” said Michael Moebs, who wrote the study. At the current rate of growth, Moebs predicts revenue from overdraft fees will hit a new record by the end of 2016, topping the old record of $37 billion set in 2009. The Moebs study found that about a quarter of the people with a consumer checking account – that’s 38 million people – frequently overdraft. The median overdraft is about $40. More than half of the customers who frequently overdraft – 57 percent or 20 million people – go to payday lenders when they are short on funds. Why? Because a payday loan is significantly cheaper. “Payday lenders are the low-price source for short-term cash needs,” Moebs said. “You can get a cash advance for $16 as opposed to $25 at a community bank, $27 a credit union and $30 at bank or thrift. Those are median prices.” While the cost of an overdrawn account has been going up at many financial institutions, the price of borrowing from a payday lender has dropped. The median charge for a $100 cash advance dropped $1.50 from 2011 to 2012, from $17.50 to $16. Moebs firmly believes many of the people who use a payday lender would rather not, if the cost of the overdraft penalty was more in line with what the payday stores charge. He puts that price point at $20. Debit-card transactions often cause an account to be overdrawn. Remember: Your bank or credit union will deny a point-of-purchase debit-card payment or cash withdrawal from an ATM if there is not enough money in the account to cover it, unless you “opt in” to their overdraft protection plan. In that case, the transaction will go through and you’ll get hit with a fee. A recent study by the Pew Charitable Trusts found that 54 percent of the customers who had overdrawn their accounts said they did not realize they had signed up for an overdraft service that cost money. Susan Weinstock, director of Pew’s Safe Checking in the Electronic Age Project, said this shows there is “a very high level of confusion” about how this overdraft protection works. Shady, shady, shady. SMH.

Dharun Ravi blames immaturity – not criminal-level hate – for his actions leading up to the tragic suicide of his former Rutgers roommate, Tyler Clementi. “I was 18 … I did do things wrong and I was stupid about a lot of stuff,” he tells ABC News of his 2010 actions. “I was a dumb kid not thinking about it.” Ravi, who many feel indirectly drove Clementi to throw himself off the George Washington bridge, was found guilty of invasion of privacy and hate crimes . He insists he is not homophobic, however. ” I didn’t act out of hate and I wasn’t uncomfortable with Tyler being gay,” Ravi claims in a separate interview with New Jersey’s The Star-Ledger newspaper. “I won’t ever … tell the world that I hated Tyler because he was gay, or tell the world that I was trying to hurt or intimidate him because it’s not true.” In death, Clementi has become a cause celebre of sorts, stirring passions, controversy and heated debate over bullying, particularly of gay youth. Dharun Ravi says he realized his roommate, also 18 at the time, “had bigger problems” that may have contributed to his decision to take his own life. “Before I went to school I thought my roommate would be my best friend and we would hang out all the time,” he tells The Star-Ledger . “But Tyler wasn’t like that.” “He was very quiet and every conversation we had just hit a dead end.” Whatever his intentions, Ravi, who allegedly used a camera to spy on Clementi kissing a man in their dorm room, then publicized that fact online, may face prison time. On Friday, Tyler Clementi’s family released a statement commenting on the jury’s findings against Ravi. Tyler’s father, Joseph Clementi, said: “Our family believes the jury reached a correct verdict. They reached their decision based on the facts shown by the evidence. At the conclusion of [Ravi’s] trial, the defense’s explanation of what happened was simply not believable.” Jane Clementi, Tyler’s mother, said: “We have become all too aware of the consequences suffered by people who are singled out for being different. We’ve learned that LGBT teens, especially, suffer pain, embarrassment and ridicule which is made worse by improper use of electronic media.”

Jimmy Kimmel is going from late night to primetime. For one night only, at least. The comedian will host the 2012 Emmy Awards, ABC announced today, joking in a statement he hopes “to do for the Emmys this year what Eddie Murphy did for the Oscars,” referring to Murphy’s extremely short tenure as host of this year’s Academy Awards. This will be Kimmel’s first time hosting the evening, although he has previously emceed the American Music Awards and the ESPY Awards. In recent years, the Emmy hosts have included Jane Lynch, Jimmy Fallon, Neil Patrick Harris and, in a horribly-failed experiment, a quintet of reality TV stars.

Madonna has come under attack from Deadmau5, one of the world’s most famous DJs, for glamorizing ecstasy use, allegedly, during a recent concert. Her Madgesty took the stage at the Ultra Music Festival in Miami this weekend, asking crowd, “How many people in this crowd have seen molly?” “Molly” is a slang term for MDMA, one of the key ingredients in ecstasy, a drug hugely popular within the electronic dance music community. Incidentally (or not) Madonna’s new album, which drops today, is called MDNA . Watch her address the crowd at the 45-second mark below: Madonna at Ultra Music Festival The crowd apparently loved the veiled inquiry from Madonna, but Deadmau5 is not a fan at all, going on Facebook and tearing her a new one. “Very classy there madonna. ‘HUR DUR HAS ANYONE SEEN MOLLY???’ such a great message for the young music lovers at ultra,” he wrote. The Mau5 added, “Quite the f’n philanthropist. but hey, at least yer HIP AND TRENDY! f*cking cant smack my head hard enough right now.” Bottom line: Mind-altering drugs are not cool, ravers. So says a man-mau5 whose fan base is probably on them 97 percent of the time.

Erstwhile Fall Out Boy frontman’s solo EP made iTunes debut Tuesday. By James Montgomery Patrick Stump Photo: Michael Caulfield/WireImage Late last year, when Patrick Stump told MTV News that his solo debut, Soul Punk, was tentatively due in February, there was much rejoicing from long-suffering Fall Out Boy fans, all of whom were clamoring for any bit of news surrounding their favorite group. Of course, that rejoicing was tempered some when it was subsequently announced that Stump had pushed back Soul Punk in favor of a six-song EP called Truant Wave. And on Tuesday, with little lead-up and absolutely zero promotion, that EP premiered on iTunes. It not only provided FOB fans a preview of where Stump is headed, musically, but also served as a point of division among their ranks. Some loved the electronic-leaning, R&B-teasing jams, while others, well, they were probably hoping Stump would return to his pop-punk roots. When he spoke to MTV News on Thursday, Stump addressed both sides of the issue, because, quite frankly, he understands why some would be upset by his new direction. In fact, that’s part of the reason he put out Truant Wave in the first place: to soften the blow. “I really want Soul Punk to have as much of a chance to have it be listened to discerningly,” he laughed. “And if I’m going to disappoint people by not [making] Take This to Your Grave, Part II, I would rather do that before Soul Punk, because that record means something to me.” Of course, there were other reasons for rushing the EP out, most of which he learned the hard way during Fall Out Boy’s final days. “Remember when Fall Out boy was putting out Folie

Once upon a time democracies worked fine for small tribes consisting of a number of families. Everyone simply got together and raised their hand to be counted. Easy. As populations grew, one could not hold massive public meetings for voting on every issue. So we developed a representative form of government, called a democratic republic. A person would be voted into office through democratic means and that person would cast a vote the Representative decided was best for their constituents. However, Republican government is not the friend of democracy and the freedoms of the people. In the course of time, as Representatives come and go, a Representative of the people will be corrupted by wealth and power offered to them by the wealthy and powerful. When that happens the people slowly loose their political power and everything degenerates once again into a have and have-not society of surfs and Aristocracy. Once upon a time, starting about two hundred years ago, we believed that was the best we could ever do and ever hope for. Today we have encryption technology. We have telephones and no pay phones that dial 911 without the need for money. We have computers, we have cell phones, we have TV and radio, newspapers, all of which informs us, all of which can be used in a system of voting. Grandma does not own a computer or TV. Grandma turns her newspaper to the Voting Pages where each bill in the state legislature and federal government is described and a pro and con opinion given, plus suggestions for further research. The deadline for the vote is given; say ten minutes before the representative casts their vote yes or no. Grandma picks up her phone, dials the voter number given for each bill, and uses her code or codes and votes. Tomorrow the newspaper will show the results and the voting record of the representative. In three days Grandma will receive a letter in the mail with her voter receipts, or she can opt for granddaughter to download her receipts off line and stay green. Grandma does a similar thing with her checks and bank transactions today. Every state has the option to pass laws making every representative in state legislatures, and in the federal government, subject to automatic recall by democratic process and a triggered recall when 10% of those representatives’ votes do not reflect the electronic democratic votes cast by the people, THE BOSS! A hearing is set and depending on state law, the representative will be subject to immediate dismissal or even criminal prosecution. Every state will be made accountable by responsible citizens on the local level, for setting up a system that is available to all eligible voters. In that way, cheating becomes a local issue forcing responsible citizens to get involved in the democratic process. Furthermore, it would force responsible citizens to get involved in politics at the state and federal level. Electronic Democracy evens the playing field between the average citizen that votes about every two years for a corrupt or corruptible representative, and the wealthy that can vote as many times as they like out of there wallets to corrupt that representative. I ask you, who really has more political power in the US today, when it is one-person one vote, and one wealthy person numerous votes? Be forewarned. The wealthy and powerful always bring out a BIG Scarecrow argument about democracies like those that I have described. They will say that crazy decisions are made by mobs of people with political power. They are correct if the average person ignores voting and let crazies run the government. However, that kind of mismanagement by the people is self-correcting. The moment some insane law is passed, the people will be forced to rise up and get involved. The more crazy laws pass, the more the rise of the people until real democracy and the power of the people is restored. In the United States, we believe in and trust the people to make the right decisions if they exercise their power to vote. That is based on a belief that human beings as a species have the ability to routinely make the correct political decision if they exercise their political power. This is the entire bases of Democracy. If it is a wrong assumption about us, then democracy for Homo Sapien is an impossibility. I for one do not believe that. However, let us put it to the test. We like to call the United States the great experiment in democracy. We can prove that the experiment is successful by using Electronic Democracy and forcing our elected representative employees to carry out the orders of their employers, the people of the United States of America. The best thing about Electronic Democracy exercised on a state-by-state bases, it is not unconstitutional. Note; lazy people can always vote in the general elections. I do not have the computer ability to start the process. But someone reading this does. Set up sites that take the votes of the people in each state, on every issue before state legislatures and our federal congress. Prove that it can work using encryption and technologies I do not understand but I am sure readers do. The revolution will be held on the internet, you are invited to join. The best way to prove this is the way to restore our freedoms and our democracy is to just do it independently. Then show the people that it works. Personally, I trust Al Gore and Current to make this happen. Maybe open a new tab and call it, Current the Democracy Project. But, if not, we can do it ourselves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izddjAp_N4I&feature=player_embedded# ! added by: ezrierin

‘We’re going to be hurt a little bit,’ admits WMC owner Bill Kelly about 2011 scheduling differences between the electronic dance music events. By Adam Stewart Deadmau5 performs at WMC 2010 Photo: MTV News Controversy has swirled around the electronic dance music community for the past two days over the Winter Music Conference and Ultra Music Festival’s misaligned 2011 schedules . While initial uncertainties left EDM enthusiasts crying foul over the seemingly early WMC dates, the initial lack of information has now given birth to crucial endorsements from prominent players. Late Wednesday afternoon Luis Puig, owner of Space Nightclub in Miami, came out swinging in defense of the 26-year-old Winter Music Conference’s integrity, whilst slamming that of Ultra Music Festival, accusing it of greedy practices. “WMC used to be about free parties with DJs and industry folks sharing and enjoying new music. Now, it is about greed and money,” says Puig in a 780-word manifesto sent late yesterday afternoon to his nightclub’s promotional e-mail list. “I love Ultra [Music Festival] and what they bring to the game,” he goes on to say, “but I do not agree with their greedy strategy to manipulate and monopolize Music Conference. This is just not good for anyone.” While Puig blatantly admits that he does indeed capitalize off of the business brought in by UMF (whose gates lay just a short walk from his downtown Miami club), he is quick to point out that “without WMC, there would be no Ultra Music Festival.” Meanwhile, while Puig’s manifesto was being absorbed by the masses, the official Winter Music Conference team posted an update to its website entitled “Just the Facts,” aimed at dispelling the various rumors scurrying about the Web over the past 36 hours. “We were blindsided by Ultra’s last minute announcement,” said WMC organizers of UMF’s supposed noncompliance. The WMC post alleged that UMF management breached their contract with WMC, claiming “a signed October 15, 2009, contract between the two entities [stating] that the 2011 Ultra Music Festival would be presented during the five-day period in February, March or April 2011 designated and promoted by WMC as the ‘WMC week.’ ” While the specific legalities officially associated with this possible breach are unclear, it is rumored that UMF was unable to secure permitting in Miami’s Bicentennial Park for the weekend of March 11-13 due to the annual Calle Ocho Carnival , which is expected to draw a crowd of more than 1 million to downtown Miami on March 13. A lack of municipal resources are being tagged with the blame. Puig — who also heads up the WMC’s famed Surfcomber Pool Parties — spoke to MTV News last night and argued that neither artists nor party promoters will even have the ability to properly sustain a pool-party-laced, faux-WMC week centered around the UMF dates. “The City of Miami Beach only issues Pool and Beach Party permits during the week of the official WMC,” he maintains. If this is indeed true, then one of the most alluring and popular elements of a potential “UMF Week” would be pushed to the wayside. Later in the evening, WMC owner and co-founder Bill Kelly spoke exclusively to MTV News and further corroborated the points in Puig’s manifesto, exclaiming, “Louis nailed it on the head!” Kelly, however, does admit that the departure of UMF from WMC week will absolutely affect his longstanding operation negatively. “We’re going to be hurt a little bit,” he says, noting that more than 25 percent of those who buy the official WMC registration pass — which currently costs $275 — do so to take advantage of the complimentary UMF ticket (now selling at $179 for the three-day pass). However, Kelly goes on to speculate that the separation of the two entities might actually open up new doors for both parties, including one scenario that might even entail the creation of WMC’s own exclusive “festival style” performance centerpiece. “The possibility of doing a smaller, more intimate festival on the beach is a real possibility now,” says Kelly. “Because of Ultra Music Festival’s size, they have been banned from [having their event] on [Miami] Beach.” Some would agree that Puig, who recently pulled off the Miami permutation of the Swedish House Mafia’s “Masquerade Motel” to a crowd of nearly 10,000, is perfectly suited to take on that challenge. In addition to Puig’s WMC endorsement, many others seem to be at least silently preparing to publicly do the same, including promotional groups such as BMF/Auriela, who last year played host to the popular Belevedere VIP Lounge at the W Hotel, which also has announced its pairing with the official WMC dates, likely returning its base of operations to the W. “Winter Music Conference is a weeklong cultural celebration and they have our full support,” says Aurelia Group president Lainie Copicotto. “From VIP Music Lounges to huge nightclubs to small ‘in-stores’ and poolside performances, WMC is not about one event or one DJ. WMC is the bigger picture.” With these key WMC endorsements, those historically involved have now been prompted to take sides in the matter. Ultra Records, which carries no affiliation to UMF, and the online-EMD-music store Beatport have both told MTV News that they will issue statements and event plans for Miami in the coming days. MTV News is also tentatively scheduled to speak with the official UMF concert promoters later this afternoon. What’s your opinion on the WMC vs. UMF debate? Tell us in the comments.
