This week, we may have witnessed the start of a beautiful friendship. By Jim Cantiello Stefano Langone on “American Idol” Photo: FOX On this week’s “American Idol” the bottom six reminded us why we didn’t vote for them. And then the top seven tackled songs from the 21st century and ironically, season 10 staple will.i.am was nowhere to be found. Here’s what else we noticed in this week’s “American Idol” in 60 Seconds: Casey and James proved they could be current pop stars by singing terribly and surrounding themselves with a whole lot of distracting bullsh–. But my favorite was Haley. She can do no wrong. [ Clip of Haley going sharp as she sings the word “deeeep” in the chorus. ] Except that note. And then there was Jacob, who heard crap in his ear. And then we heard crap in our ears. [ Clip of J.Lo telling Jacob, “It’s hard to perform when a song means that much to you.” ] You speak from experience, J.Lo? Wow, those most have been some amazing Louboutins. On Thursday night’s results show … [ Group sings “Hey Soul Sister.” ] Oh, hell no! [ Katy Perry singing “E.T.” ] OK, JUST KIDDING I’D RATHER HEAR MORE TRAIN SONGS INSTEAD OF THAT. And then David Cook came back to pimp out his mom and debut his new hair. I mean, single. (No, I mean hair.) [ Clip of Stefano and James Durbin bro-ing out. ] Awww, look they’re friends! [ Clip of James giving Stefano a massage. ] Close friends! [ Stefano is eliminated, James Durbin is devastated. ] Really close friends! [ James tackles and lifts Stefano at the end of his farewell performance. ] Oh, girl, they’re definitely . Ding! From Robert Pattinson’s hairdo to his love scenes with Reese Witherspoon, MTV News has you covered. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in “Water for Elephants” Photo: 20th Century Fox The question for Robert Pattinson wasn’t if he would make the leap from “Twilight” vamp to major-studio player but when. The answer came in January 2010, when news broke that the British actor was eyeing a role in Fox’s “Water for Elephants.” Ever since, MTV News has been following anything and everything connected to the film, an adaptation of Sara Gruen’s best-selling novel. Now the movie is set to hit theaters and we’re gathering all our coverage into one place for a “Water for Elephants” cheat sheet. Training When word broke of Pattinson’s intention to play a veterinary student named Jacob in “WFE,” Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon was already signed on to play Marlena, a beautiful circus performer who’s married yet falls in love with Jacob when he joins the troupe. Sean Penn was originally eyeing the role of Marlena’s husband, but the part eventually went to another Oscar winner, . With Pattinson’s new part came a new haircut: Goodbye, Edward Cullen’s messy locks , hello Jacob’s cropped do. The first shot of Pattinson in action arrived in June, when a photo of him climbing a train popped up online. More pics followed, including looks at Reese and Rob sharing a smooch . Paparazzi weren’t the only ones paying attention to the production. Fans were everywhere, too. “The only thing I can compare it to is when Leo was in ‘Titanic,’ ” Witherspoon told MTV News in December. “It was that kind of fervor about a person. The women lining up outside the set — it was just unbelievable — till 5 o’clock in the morning waiting to just glimpse him.” Rehearsal Shortly after our chat with Reese, Fox released the first “Watermfor Elephants” trailer , highlighting the film’s story of a circus-centered love triangle between Jacob, Marlena and Marlena’s cruel husband, August/. That, and Rob’s many smoldering looks . A second trailer debuted in March, showing a darker tone and, perhaps to lighten the mood, Reese and Rob’s kiss. As the film’s release date neared, MTV News announced a live-stream event with Pattinson . The star debuted a new clip from the film and stuck around for a 30-minute chat, touching on everything from cursing on the set of “Breaking Dawn” to an awkward “WFE” love scene with Reese. “The love scene in this, I was doing it when I had a really bad cold,” Pattinson explained . “I’m not generally that awkward doing stuff apart from when I’ve got my belly coming out. But my nose is running all over the place and it was in one of the additional photography scenes, and Reese had this wig on, and literally, I was wiping my nose on her wig.” Performance The live chat wouldn’t be our only chance to talk with Rob and the rest of the cast. We met back up with him at a press event a few weeks later. This time around, Pattinson discussed love at first sight (he believes in it) and his preferred circus job (manual labor). “I find it very satisfying. I like stacking boxes and stuff like that,” he said. “And also I looked at all the background guys who were putting up a tent as a part of a scene and they were doing this stuff, like in ‘Dumbo,’ and it looked like something appealing about that, being a part of this team that creates this town in two days, and it’s quite cool. And I like the idea of being the absolute everyman as well.” And, just in case you didn’t get enough of RPattz, MTV News presented a live stream from the “Water for Elephants” red carpet in New York. Turns out, Rob barely made it to the event. “It was a mad rush to get here!” Pattinson said of trying to leave the set of “Breaking Dawn,” which wrapped production hours before the premiere. “I was leaving at, like, one o’clock in the morning. They’re like, ‘C’mon, we need one more shot!’ and you’ve got three people pulling you from either side!” Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Pattinson had been cast as his ‘Water for Elephants’ co-star’s son in 2004’s ‘Vanity Fair.’ By Jocelyn Vena Robert Pattinson on the “Today” show on Monday Photo: NBC On Friday, Robert Pattinson is running away and joining the circus. He stars as Reese Witherspoon’s love interest in the romantic drama “Water for Elephants.” And while this time around they’re playing lovers, in the past, Pattinson has played Witherspoon’s son. “It is very bizarre,” he said of the casting on the “Today” show on Monday (April 18). “I think that’s kind of bizarre [that] they cast me as her son,” he added, referring to the 2004 flick “Vanity Fair.” His part was later cut. In the film, Pattinson’s character joins the circus after his parents are killed in a car accident. But in real life, the “Twilight” star never romanticized about a life under the big top. “Running away and joining the circus? [No], the first time I went to the circus somebody died,” he recalled. “One of the clowns died; the joke car exploded. It was terrifying.” Pattinson, however, does have a more romantic view of the time period in which the film takes place. “I think that period, the ’30s, was the most exciting; the end of the Wild West,” he explained. “I always found it kind of interesting and then it turned into white picket fences.” He plays a veterinarian in the film, and he admits that while the old Hollywood maxim is “Never work with children or animals,” Pattinson sort of lives by the opposite. “I think it’s so much better. I like working with kids. I like working with animals,” he said, sharing one warning for fans: “The zebras are the ones to watch out for; always avoid zebras.” Pattinson hopes that as his career chugs along, he’ll still be able to get viewers in the seats, even in a post-“Twilight” world. “Who knows? I mean, you just kind of can’t predict what an audience feels,” he said. “I guess if you keep doing what you like doing, hopefully then one other person in the world will want to watch them.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Reese Witherspoon finds Robert Pattinson ” amazing and wonderful .” Then why was the actress disgusted by a sex scene between the pair while shooting Water for Elephants ? We’ll let her explain… “Rob possibly had the most hideous horrible cold of any co-star I’ve ever had to do a love scene with ever in my entire life,” Witherspoon told In Touch Weekly . “He was literally snorting and snotting through every second of it… I’m talking green, infectious, disgusting. I’m not kidding!”
MTV News got a sneak peek at the mind-blowing action of the new film. By Kara Warner Bumblebee in “Transformers: Dark Of The Moon” Photo: Paramount While gearing up for the release of “Transformers: Dark of the Moon,” director Michael Bay has not been shy about his desire to right the missteps in “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen”: putting more focus on writing a better story, making the action more accessible, yet “epic” in scale. Based on the footage and trailer MTV News saw on the Paramount lot before a candid chat with Bay on Thursday, it looks like he’s making good on his word. We can’t get into specifics, of course, but with regard to the trailer — the 2-D version of which will roll out in theaters on April 28, while a 3-D version will hit in front of “Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides” — it takes the intrigue of the teaser trailer , plus the intensity from the action-packed 30-second Super Bowl spot and adds enough mind-blowing, mesmerizing robotgasm goodness to leave even the most passive of fans slack-jawed. Or googly-eyed. One of the two. We also saw snippets of returning and new supporting cast members, a possible Pink Floyd tie-in and a tantalizing, yet not at all overwhelming, 3-D sizzle reel. Speaking of his latest and likely last “Transformers” installment, Bay began by admitting that he is not trying to capture the magic of the first film. “You’re never going to match the innocence of the first movie and the wonderment,” he said. “The genie is out of the bottle there. This one, I think, is a more mature storyline. It’s definitely darker.” He later explained that the new movie has more of the aliens’ backstory. “You learn a lot more about the hierarchy, there’s a lot more history of what they’ve had on Cybertron,” he said. Bay also went into his reasoning and reservations behind the decision to shoot in 3-D, and what (actually, who) convinced him to go ahead with the new technology. “[James Cameron], at the last minute, goes, ‘Mike, come on,'” Bay recalled, imitating the “Avatar” director’s enthusiasm with a slightly deep and gravelly inflection in his voice. “This is like my idol. He goes, ‘Mike come on, we’ve done everything.’ I’m thinking, ‘I haven’t done everything.’ ” Cameron pushed him to try out this “new toy,” and that despite all the headaches that are added to the filmmaking process with shooting in 3-D, he’s glad he did it. “3-D, it’s pretty great when you see these robots interact in the space,” he said. Other excitement added into the mix for “Dark of the Moon” are the suped-up action sequences, specifically a scene that involves base jumpers jumping off the Sears Tower and literally flying through downtown Chicago. “There’s a lot of action stuff I’ve never done before that’s pretty cool,” Bay said of what makes this installment stand out. “I want to make up for the second one, and I want to leave the franchise as best I can.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Transformers: Dark of the Moon.” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com . ‘As dancers go, I wouldn’t say it’s his forte,’ she tells MTV News about her co-star. By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in “Water for Elephants” Photo: 20th Century Fox Robert Pattinson had no problem working alongside an elephant , being lifted up into the creature’s mouth and improvising with her on take after take. He did, however, have a lot of trouble working with “Water for Elephants” co-star Reese Witherspoon, at least when it came time to dance. “That was the one bit I was most nervous about because there are tons of extras who are really good dancers, and they’re all doing the Charleston. And Reese is a really great dancer,” Pattinson laughed during a recent MTV News interview. “Reese said she couldn’t even do the practice with me, so she did the practice with the dance teacher.”
We’ll chat with RPattz, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz and more Sunday at 5 p.m. ET. By Eric Ditzian Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon in “Water for Elephants” Photo: 20th Century Fox Third time’s a charm! Back in March, MTV News sat down for a 30-minute live chat with Robert Pattinson after the star introduced an exclusive “Water for Elephants” clip. Then we met up with the 24-year-old star again at the “WFE” press day for another extended conversation about everything from “Breaking Dawn” to his favorite TV shows . Now, for the third time in less than a month, we’ll once again be talking to Pattinson — and we’ll be bringing the interview to you live on MTV.com. At this Sunday’s “Water for Elephants” red-carpet premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City on Sunday, at 5 p.m. ET, host Josh Horowitz will not only be chatting with Pattinson but with Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz, Hal Holbrook, Ken Foree, Donna Scott, director Francis Lawrence, best-selling author Sara Gruen, and other celebrity guests. And you’ll have a chance to submit questions for Pattinson and his co-stars. Questions can be submitted on MTV.com or via Twitter, using @MTVNews and the hashtag #AskWFE. Based on Gruen’s acclaimed novel, the film follows a veterinary school student named Jacob (Pattinson), who joins a circus around the time of the Great Depression and falls in love with star performer Marlena (Reese Witherspoon). Marlena, however, is married to a charismatic but cruel animal trainer named August (Christoph Waltz), a man who stands dangerously in the way of Jacob and Marlena’s pursuit of lasting love. “It felt like it was kind of magical in many ways, because we were out in the desert shooting,” Pattinson said of the production. “There was nothing from the modern world around. It was a different experience for me. It wasn’t in a studio or anything.” Check out everything we’ve got on “Water for Elephants.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com .
