REVIEW: Cameron Crowe Tries, and Fails, to Freshen a Treacly Tale in We Bought a Zoo

Cameron Crowe can be a big old cheeseball, but he’s never been a filmmaker to come across as cynical or calculatedly manipulative. That’s one of the reasons We Bought a Zoo doesn’t leave your heartstrings feeling brutally manhandled, despite being a treacly tale about how a widower in search of a fresh start buys and moves to a struggling animal park with his two beautiful, sad children. The other reason is Matt Damon, who underplays the role of still-grieving dad Benjamin Mee as much as possible and brings an edge of genuine frustration to his relationship with his teenage son Dylan (Colin Ford). Though overall the film’s still as honey-toned as the golden sunshine that slants through most of its scenes, the occasional glimpse of a rough human edge means this isn’t just an exercise in mawkishness, though it’s also nowhere near as emotionally resonant as it strives to be.

Watch Ferris Bueller’s Life Get Depressing in Last Day Off Spoof

In Ferris Bueller’s Day Off , which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary , Matthew Broderick’s title character famously says, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” In a new Atom.com sketch, New York City-based comedy trio Sidecar Comedy toys with that concept precisely by seeing how the John Hughes character would fare in the modern world. Check out the only Ferris sequel you’ll need ahead.

Little Dakota Fanning Is All Grown Up, Almost, in Suggestive New Marc Jacobs Ad

Let’s take a closer look at little Dakota Fanning ‘s new ad campaign as the spokesmodel for Marc Jacobs’ latest fragrance, Oh, Lola. On the one hand, the 17-year-old Fanning has been preparing us for this moment for years, what with her increasingly mature film roles of late (a lesbian make-out with Kristen Stewart in The Runaways ? How edgy !). On the other hand, is anyone ready to see Dakota Fanning in a suggestive pose with a flower in her crotch?

Sofia Coppola, Stephen Dorff, and Elle Fanning Play ‘My Favorite Scene’

When I asked Somewhere director Sofia Coppola and her two stars Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning to pick their favorite film scenes of all-time, each responded with a clip he/she first watched during early adolescence. Of course, right? Coppola chose an ’80s classic, Fanning selected a cinematic hallmark starring her screen idol, and Dorff recalled a scene that intrigued and baffled him when he first saw it on television. Join us as we revisit their favorites (with clips!).

REVIEW: Terrifying, Weird Nutcracker in 3-D Features the Best Effects iMovie Can Buy

Almost two centuries of holiday-friendly goodwill go up in a sun-blotting, smokestack cloud in The Nutcracker in 3-D , the most confounded in the long and miscegenetic line of adaptations of E.T.A. Hoffman’s 1816 story. Gone, too, is the considerable rehabilitative capital vested, by the 2007 film Ratatouille , in one of nature’s more wretched people: the common sewer rat. This stunning one-two clobber by Russian director Andrei Konchalovsky sent me reeling to the far reaches of my seat. I wasn’t alone: During a critical moment in the screening I attended, one girl of about 9 bolted from the front row to find her father, who had chosen to sit at a more adult remove.

Postcard from Venice: Sofia Coppola’s Somewhere Tranfixes, Julian Schnabel’s Miral Disappoints

Film festivals aren’t always the glamorous affairs they’re made out to be. Aside from the usual red carpet action, at most festivals it’s unusual to see famous types out and about, potentially rubbing shoulders with mere mortals. And as much as I love the occasional random surprise celebrity sighting, that’s fine with me. The downside to most festivals is that there’s too much to see in an extremely short amount of time, and I need some real life banked around my movies.
