Moody Monster Flick? Lesbian Letdown? Puzzling Jack and Diane Debuts at Tribeca

Oh to be young and in love and periodically a flesh-rending creature of globular, hairy, throbbing pulp. That’s the curse heaped upon the eponymous romantics in Jack and Diane , one of the more anticipated — and more disappointing — features in Tribeca 2012’s narrative competition. It’s hard to be too down on such lean passion; Jack and Diane ‘s premiere Friday night amounted to the culmination of nine years of work by filmmaker Bradley Rust Gray, whose acclaimed 2010 drama The Exploding Girl served as sort of a hetero prelude to the lesbian body horror/romance mashup swamping his latest: Diane (Juno Temple) is a hot British teen mess visiting her aunt in New York City, all babydoll dresses, knit watermelon halter tops and purple knee socks, rocked by the hormonal lighting strike that is butch, brooding Jack (Riley Keough). The girls club, they kiss, they bond, they exchange vaguely sweet Manhattan banalities (“I have a Metrocard if you want it”), and then… I don’t even know. On the one hand it’s not worth spoiling; jumpy genre reveals are involved, hinted at by customarily grisly animation by the Brothers Quay. On the other hand, Jack and Diane is too much of a mess to spoil, suffocated in the dynamics of longing without even the hope of dramatic — or even darkly comedic — satisfaction. It’s a movie whose shadowy genre overtones — a girl! In a bathroom! With a bloody nose! And a monster! — surrenders to the same auteurist A.D.D. that sank The Exploding Girl . For once, I would like to see Gray’s New York not refracted surveillance-style through long lenses and the fraught nubile wits of characters whose doe eyes and costumes connote virtually the whole story. Temple’s expressive genius — all matted blond hair and mischievous (and monstrous) pixie — goes only so far against Keough’s near-total blankness, getting most of its mileage out of a single early, affecting confessional between the star-crossed girls. Ultimately, though, it’s hard to know just how seriously to take Jack and Diane , with all its sinewy portent and bizarre porn digressions and tragicomic pube-shaving and actual straight-faced dialogue such as, “Do you have to take a shit? Try to do like I do and fart it out.” Viewers familiar with The Exploding Girl might realize after a while that they’re only staying with Jack and Diane for the promise of more B-list hipster-goddesses losing control; then it was Zoe Kazan’s simmering epileptic panic, and now it’s the viscera-devouring prospect of sapphic passion — in one case featuring Elvis Presley’s grandaughter (Keough’s mother is Lisa Marie Presley) and Kylie Minogue in a heavily tattooed cameo. It is what it is, and it never feels like much more. Nevertheless, there is at least one glint of salvation in Jack and Diane , though it has nothing to do with its filmmaking or performances (and here I should issue a spoiler alert): Keough and Minogue make out to the strains of Shellac’s rare and entrancing hate-punk ballad ” Doris ,” which I suppose means that someone somewhere has a clean MP3 of the notoriously vinyl-only single. Giuliana Rancic to Go Dancing With the Stars?

Giuliana Rancic is on the top of Dancing With the Stars’ wish list for this spring. Whether the ABC hit can actually land her is another story, for myriad reasons. “Yes, I’ve been approached for the new season,” Rancic confirms. She certainly has the body for those sequined outfits, as well as a winning personality, fan base and inspiring story ( cancer survivor ). But is she interested? “I’ve been a big fan of the show for years,” she adds . “But sadly, my busy schedule at the moment would never allow for such a grueling rehearsal commitment.” “Who knows, maybe Bill and I can be on the show together in a future season and go toe-to-toe for the Mirror Ball trophy.” Now that’d be worth watching. We’re not sure why she thinks she can’t put in the time, though. She only co-hosts two E! shows, works every red carpet and stars on her own reality show. Come on, girl. Make it happen. National Enquirer Defends Whitney Houston Death Photo as "Beautiful"

The National Enquirer has an extraordinarily warped sense of beauty. With every media outlet and Twitter account holder in shock and disgust over that tabloid publishing a photo of Whitney Houston in her casket , courtesy of last Saturday’s funeral in New Jersey, the tabloid’s publisher, Mary Beth Wright, spoke to Fox News yesterday and actually said: “I thought it was beautiful.” This isn’t the first time the National Enquirer has invoked such controversy and outrage. In 1977, the newspaper published an image Elvis Presley in his coffin, and it also ran a a photograph of John Lennon following his death in 1980. What do you think of its decision to post a shot of Whitney’s corpse?

Dr. Conrad Murray Verdict: GUILTY of Manslaughter

The jury has returned a verdict of in the Dr. Conrad Murray manslaughter trial. Murray was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the 2009 death of Michael Jackson. After less than two days of deliberation, the jury reached a verdict for the man who worked as MJ’s personal physician leading up to his ill-fated This Is It tour. The panel buzzed the L.A. Superior Courtroom three times from the deliberation room this morning, signaling it had made a decision after the six-week trial. The verdict was just announced, and Murray was found guilty . In the six-week trial, prosecutors hammed home the argument that Murray recklessly administered a lethal dose of the powerful anesthesia Propofol to MJ. Moreover, they painted a picture of a man concerned for his own well being instead of his patient, and said all of Murray’s decisions led to Jackson’s death . Also, his self-described timeline of events simply did not add up. His defense attorneys claimed that Michael Jackson was in the midst of an irreversible downward spiral of addiction, and accidentally gave himself a fatal dose. That always felt like a stretch, but they had to argue something. He will be sentenced November 29 and faces up to four years in prison. It looks as if Dr. Murray will be remanded into custody and denied bail until that date. UPDATE: We’ve posted video of the reading of the verdict below. After the verdict was read aloud, you can hear La Toya Jackson and Kathy Hilton (Paris’ mom, and a family friend) cry out, before they are quickly shushed: Dr. Conrad Murray Verdict Reading Dr. Conrad Murray guilty verdict: Did the jury get it right?

Adam Lambert Poses for Out, Dishes on Second Album

Adam Lambert channels Elvis Presley in the latest issue of Out . Named a member of the Out 100 by the magazine, this former American Idol runner-up poses like The King did during a famous photo shoot with Andy Warhol. See for yourself: During a candid interview , Lambert also admitted that his debut album sales may have been affected by the public’s focus on his sexuality, saying: “Now that I have established who I am and I’ve gotten it out of my system, what’s really important – without denying or downplaying my pride as a gay man – is the music.” And what can fans expect from the singer’s follow-up? Songs that are all personal, Adam says. “This is definitely the album that I want to make. I’m getting time with it, I’m able to say, ‘I want to re-record that vocal,’ or ‘Let’s bring this song to another producer or a different beat put on it’. So I’m getting to immerse myself in the process. I feel like I’m getting to take the necessary time.”

Rihanna’s ‘We Found Love’ Makes Hot 100 History

Latest #1 moves her ahead of Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson on the all-time list, with Whitney Houston and Madonna within reach. By James Montgomery Rihanna on the set of her “We Found Love” video Photo: Photopress Belfast/Splash News Rihanna may have pushed the boundaries with her video for “We Found Love,” but thanks to that song, she’s now pushed her way into the history books — and passed a pair of all-time greats in the process. “Love” just completed its climb to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, giving Rihanna her 11th #1 hit, which puts her one ahead of Stevie Wonder and Janet Jackson. With her latest chart-topper, she’s now tied with Whitney Houston and is within reach of equaling Madonna and the Supremes’ career total of 12 #1’s. If — or, more likely, when — she gets her 12th, she’ll trail only Michael Jackson (13 #1’s), Elvis Presley (17), Mariah Carey (18) and the Beatles (20) on the all-time list. Rare company, indeed. And just as impressive is how quickly she’s accomplished all this. Earlier this month, when “Love” leapt from #16 to #9 on the Hot 100, RiRi made Billboard history by racking up 20 top 10’s faster than any solo artist , doing it in just six years and four months. That bested a mark previously set by Madonna, who did it in six years and nine months and ranks Rihanna second to only the Beatles, who pulled off the feat in a staggering two years and seven months. Rihanna is the 14th artist to ever earn 20 Hot 100 top 10’s and is just the fifth woman to do it. Madonna leads everyone with 37 top 10’s, followed by Carey and Jackson (27 each) and Whitney Houston, with 23. What do you think about Rihanna’s chart accomplishment? Let us know in the comments!
