LL Cool J Salutes Hip-Hop’s Growth At BET Awards

‘To go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows … that’s a big thing,’ LL tells MTV News on black carpet. By Rob Markman LL Cool J Photo: MTV News Who would’ve thought that hip-hop would take it this far? When he got his start in 1984, LL Cool J remembers how the genre was marginalized in the media, but Tuesday night’s 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards are a definite sign of the times. “When we first started the music, they didn’t even play it on the radio in the daytime,” BET’s I Am Hip Hop Icon Award winner told MTV News on the show’s black carpet. “Hip-hop was two hours at night or an hour at night on the weekends, and that was it. So to go from an hour or two hours at night to entire award shows and whole generations of people whose lives have been changed just because they’re involved with the music, that’s a big thing.” The awards shows started off with a bang. Young Jeezy opened with his new single “F.A.M.E.” and gave way to T.I. on the song’s final verse, marking the first television appearance for the King of the South since his prison release in September. Lil Wayne — who was nominated for an astounding 18 awards — took home five, while Busta Rhymes accepted four on behalf of his absent “Look at Me Now” collaborator Chris Brown. Nicki Minaj was named MVP of the Year, while Wiz Khalifa took home the Rookie of the Year award. Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy won CD of the Year, and Jay-Z was crowned Hustler of the Year. The show’s live performances were something to marvel at, as DMX and Swizz Beatz surprised viewers with a medley of classics. Big Sean and Wiz Khalifa rocked spirited sets, while Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group performed their singles “That Way” and “Ima Boss.” Rap icon Heavy D closed out the show, but the real highlights were the rap ciphers . B.o.B, Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, Tech N9ne, Kendrick Lamar, Eminem and Rick Ross all participated in the rap segments, while DJ Premier curated the rhyme showcase. “It makes me feel good to be a person that contributed, that helped make this happen,” LL said. How’s that for cultural growth? What did you think of the BET Hip Hop Awards? Let us know in the comments! Related Artists LL Cool J

T.I. Gets King’s Welcome At ’11 BET Hip Hop Awards

Newly freed Tip opened the show, while Eminem, Rick Ross, Young Jeezy, many more electrified crowd at show airing October 11. By Rob Markman T.I. at the 2011 BET Awards Photo: Chris McKay/ Getty Images ATLANTA — It was only fitting the “King of the South” made his regal return on a stage so close to where his troubles began back in 2007, but also so near where he first got his start in the game. After completing his 11-month prison sentence on Thursday, T.I. opened the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards with Young Jeezy as the two performed the Snowman’s new single “F.A.M.E.” The awards show, which taped at the Atlanta Civic Center on Saturday, is set to air on Tuesday, October 11; comedian Mike Epps hosted with assistance from Da Brat. While T.I. arguably provided the show’s grandest moment, Rick Ross and his Maybach Music crew, Lupe Fiasco, Big Sean, Heavy D, DMX and Wiz Khalifa all electrified the crowd with hyped-up performances throughout the night. Rap legend LL Cool J received the show’s highest honor when he was presented with the I Am Hip-Hop Award for his career of achievements in music, movies and television. The awards show’s black carpet was equally star-studded. Rival rap crews like Ross’ Maybach Music rubbed shoulders with G-Unit’s newest members Shawty Lo and Kidd Kidd in a show of peace, love and appreciation for the culture. As most fans know, BET’s pre-taped rap ciphers typically generate some the of the ceremony’s most buzz-worthy moments, with memorable performances from Kayne’s G.O.O.D. Music crew, Mos Def and the Roots’ Black Thought going viral in recent years. This year, the network upped the ante adding more rhyme ciphers than ever before. MCs like French Montana, Tech N9ne, Big K.R.I.T., Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, Maybach Music Group, Slaughterhouse, Yelawolf and Eminem all traded rhymes while DJ Premier spun the beats. Among the leading nominees are Lil Wayne (who earned a record-setting 18 nods), Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj and Waka Flocka Flame, while stars like NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire, Tracee Ellis Ross and Nelly were among the presenters. Tune in to the 2011 BET Hip Hop Awards on Tuesday, October 11, at 8pm ET to see who took home the prizes! Related Artists T.I.

Actress/singer calls November 6 gig ‘a dream come true!’ By Gil Kaufman Selena Gomez Photo: Jeffrey Mayer/ WireImage Between romantic dates in empty basketball arenas with boyfriend Justin Bieber , Selena Gomez has found some time to squeeze in a new gig: host of the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards . Gomez, who got her hosting feet wet when she served as a special black-carpet correspondent at the 2011 MTV VMA pre-show in Los Angeles, will help celebrate the best in the world when the awards show touches down in Belfast, Ireland, at the Odyssey Arena on November 6. “I’m so excited to be the host of the 2011 MTV EMA–it’s a dream come true!” Gomez said a statement announcing her gig. “This is such a huge event that always recognizes the biggest stars in music from across the globe, so it’s a real honour to be MC at this year’s show.” Gomez has been on the road for the past few months promoting When the Sun Goes Down, the third album from her band, Selena Gomez and the Scene. ‘X Factor’ Auditions Teased In New Promo

‘It’s more than just a voice. It’s something else,’ Simon Cowell says in the 8-minute promo. By James Dinh Contestant Rachel Crow appears on X-Factor Photo: Fox Promotion for the U.S. version of “X Factor” kicked into high gear on Sunday night when Fox aired a unusually lengthy eight-minute preview of their forthcoming talent competition. The preview gave viewers an early introduction to the judging panel’s insight and some potential audition favorites before the show’s splashing debut on September 21. After a montage introducing all of the panelists — Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger — the TV preview offered viewers a taste of the series’ upcoming auditions. First up was the enthusiastic 13-year-old Rachel Crow, whose bubbly personality shined as bright as her voice. Upon her arrival onstage, the curly-haired student showed no signs of cold feet for what she described as “the most important thing I’ve ever done in my life.” “My family has, like, no money,” the fresh-faced auditioner told Cowell. “And let me tell you, we live in a two-bedroom house, OK? And I have six people in my family, which is a lot of people. And I’m a girl. I need my own bathroom.” After her brief chitchat with the panel, Crow tapped her foot, swayed her hands and delivered a belting rendition of Duffy’s “Mercy.” As you may have guessed, Abdul exuded just as much energy as the big-voiced Crow when she smiled and bobbed her head to the chanting tune. And it wasn’t just Abdul who enjoyed the audition, but also fellow judge L.A. Reid. “You have everything that every artist I’ve ever signed has: feisty, sassy, soulful. You got it all, baby. I love you,” he told her. Cameras soon panned to the backstage reactions from the young girl’s family, who joined together for a group hug. Crow looked in almost disbelief as she questioned her mom about the audition. “Mom, did you see that?” she asked. “X Factor” was also quick to showcase the show’s much-promoted no-age-limit rule when they moved on to the next contestant, 42-year-old single mother Stacy. The youthful-looking singer tearfully recalled the story of meeting someone who disregarded her big dreams, leaving her faith in shambles. “I don’t want to die with this music in me, Simon,” she candidly told the judge onstage, with the microphone clenched with both hands. Shots of the studio audience, who waited to hear whether or not Stacy could deliver, flashed when she began her cover of Aretha Franklin’s “(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman.” Just a few lines into the tune, Stacy was met with an overwhelming audience cheer and stunned reactions from the judges. “Let me tell you something, Stacy. I’ve done this a long, long time. That was one of the best auditions I have ever heard in my life. Loved it. Loved it. Loved it. I love you,” Cowell gushed. “X Factor” fans were met with even more eye (and ear) appeasing clips when the preview concluded with a dramatic montage and news of a two-night premiere, which airs September 21 and 22. We can also expect some high-profile guests during the show’s premiere season. Rihanna has signed up to guest-judge on an as-yet-undetermined date, according to TMZ . Lloyd Banks, Trina, More On ‘RapFix Live’ Anniversary Special!

Maino, the Outlawz also join host Sway on the red couch for one-year anniversary live stream Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. By Rob Markman Lloyd Banks and Sway on “RapFix Live” in November 2010 Photo: MTV News What a year! From the ascent of Wiz Khalifa to the rise of Rick Ross’ Maybach Music empire; from Lil Wayne’s 2010 prison release to T.I.’s latest incarceration; from the tragic death of Nate Dogg to the murder of M-Bone; not to mention the release of the highly anticipated Watch the Throne and Tha Carter IV, “RapFix Live” has been the number one source of all things hip-hop. After 12 months of hard work, MTV News will celebrate on the “RapFix Live” one-year anniversary show, set to kick off Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com. Lloyd Banks , Maino , Trina and the Outlawz will join host Sway in taking a look back at the past year in hip-hop. In this special celebratory broadcast, “RapFix” will also relive the show’s greatest moments. Who could forget when Rick Ross graced the “RFL” couch for the very first time, or when Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose professed their love for each other in front of our cameras? After announcing their reunion, the Diplomats appeared on “RapFix Live” in January — but without Juelz Santana. While the Dipset, covering for their boy, told us Elz had suffered an allergic reaction, we later learned that the Harlem spitter had his studio raided by police. Santana stopped by himself in June to set the record straight. Cam’ron and crew weren’t the only rap supergroup to stop by “RFL,” though. Before releasing their Bad Meets Evil EP, Royce Da 5’9″ and Eminem invited Sway out to Detroit for a special sit-down. Fans also tuned in, in record numbers, when Consequence swung through the MTV Newsroom and aired out his grievances with onetime label boss and friend Kanye West . Yes, there have been some memorable moments on “RapFix Live” and a wide range of guests, including Lil’ Kim, Nicki Minaj, Game, Diddy, Busta Rhymes, Ja Rule and J. Cole. But the exclusive interviews aren’t the only thing that fans tune in to see on “RapFix Live.” At the end of every broadcast, the show’s guest isn’t allowed to leave until he or she kicks a freestyle rhyme. Pusha T, Fat Joe, Beanie Sigel, Nicki, Reek Da Villain and Fabolous have all blessed the show with their bars. The ridiculous rhymes and the standout moments — we’re celebrating it all on Wednesday’s one-year anniversary show! Lady Gaga, Beyonce Win Early VMAs

Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ took home Best Video With a Message early Sunday night. By Eric Ditzian Lady Gaga Photo: Getty Images Lady Gaga — trailblazer in yet another pop culture realm! The singer’s “Born This Way” won the first-ever Moonman for Best Video With a Message at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday evening. “I’m really proud of the ‘Born This Way’ video, and for it to be nominated is an absolute honor,” Gaga earlier told MTV News. The winner of the Best Video With a Message award, devoted to videos where music and social activism unite with positive messages that delve into some of the biggest issues of the day, was announced during the black carpet Pre-Show — just one of a handful of early awards. Adele won big, taking home three professional awards. She bested Gaga, Katy Perry and Kanye West to win Best Art Direction for “Rolling in the Deep.” The Brit chanteuse’s video also took Editing (over ‘Ye and 30 Seconds to Mars) and Cinematography (over Beyonc

Justin Bieber Plants Kiss On Selena Gomez On VMA Pre-Show

Black carpet co-host Gomez was interviewing boyfriend Justin on Sunday. By Kara Warner Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez on the 2011 VMA red carpet Photo: FilmMagic Although MTV Mews’ Sway Calloway has enough interview experience to get the goods from the biggest and brightest stars, our special VMA Pre-Show co-host Selena Gomez proved to be just as skilled as our season pro when her interview subject was boyfriend Justin Bieber “I’m here with the one-and-only Justin Bieber,” Gomez said when she introduced the singer with a smile. “Who are you wearing? Can you please talk about that?” “I have my snake,” Bieber said, displaying a live pet reptile in his hand. “I have red pants and cheetah shoes.” “What’s your snake’s name?” Gomez expertly followed up. “My snake’s name is Johnson,” Bieber responded. “You’re up for Best Male Video,” Gomez continued. “I wanna know &#8212 you’re up against Eminem and Bruno Mars &#8212 do you feel a little nervous at all?” “You know, I’m just excited to be in the category with such amazing people,” Bieber said of his fellow nominees. “I’m just happy to be here.” “Rumored to be performing is Jay-Z and Kanye [West], and I know you like them both,” Gomez continued, adding a bit of her Bieber expertise to the conversation. “Are you excited to see them perform?” “Very excited,” Bieber said. “I heard that it was kind of a last minute thing, but I’m really excited.” Gomez, again relying upon her insider Bieber knowledge, prodded Bieber further, asking if he was more excited for Jay-Z and Kanye West, or another of his favorites, Beyonc

Justin Bieber Remixes Drake’s ‘Trust Issues’ Before VMAs

VMA nominee’s voice sounds mature, but he tones down the lyrics. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber Photo: Jesse Grant/ WireImage Justin Bieber and Drake are certainly besties, and on Sunday (August 28), Bieber dropped his version of Drake’s “Trust Issues,” just in time for both guys to make appearances at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. While he maintains much of the integrity of the song musically, Bieber does clean up the language, swapping some of the more-adult lines for PG-rated versions. Instead of the original’s “I’mma sip until I feel it, I’mma smoke it till it’s done,” Bieber sings, “I’mma sing until I feel it, I’mma go till it’s done.” Later, the Biebs sings, “You just need to listen, I’ll teach you how to fix it/ But you’re the only one, ’cause I don’t trust these women/ I don’t, I don’t trust these women.” Drake’s original verse? “You know what I’m sippin’, I teach you how to mix it/ But you’re the only one, ’cause I don’t trust these bitches/ I don’t, I don’t trust these bitches.” The song still does keep some of its lyrical edge when Drake makes an appearance via samples from the original track. While the lyrics might be very different from Drake’s original — which will appear on his next album, Take Care, due in October — the aspect of Bieber’s track that will stand out to his loyal devotees is the singer’s voice: It’s much deeper than what fans have heard from him in the past. Bieber is nominated for one Moonman at the 2011 VMAs: Best Male Video for “U Smile.” His competition includes Eminem, Cee-Lo, Bruno Mars and Kanye West. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live Sunday from Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT, following the Selena Gomez-hosted pre-show at 8. Adele, Katy Perry Will Win Big At VMAs, Experts Predict

Both could end up with multiple Moonmen on Sunday, according to music journalists. By Gil Kaufman Adele and Katy Perry Photo: Columbia/ Capitol You can always count on outrageous entrances, pimped out red (or white, or black) carpets and plenty of over-the-top performances at the VMAs . But until that envelope is cracked open and the name is called, nobody really knows who is going to take home those Moonmen during the broadcast. (And no, just because we work at MTV doesn’t mean we’re in on the winners’ list.) As the anticipation builds for Sunday night, we asked a couple of professional pop-culture junkies to help us predict the VMA class of 2011 using a complicated system of … oh, let’s face it, they were guessing just like the rest of us. (For a more mathematical approach, find out what Vegas oddsmakers predict for the VMAs .) Video of the Year Adele, “Rolling in the Deep” Beastie Boys, “Make Some Noise” Bruno Mars, “Grenade” Katy Perry, “Firework” Tyler, the Creator, “Yonkers” Ian Drew, Senior Music Editor, Us Weekly : “Adele will win. I think it was her year, and this will cement that she is the new face of the music industry.” Kyle Anderson, Staff Writer, Entertainment Weekly : “This seems like a really tough one. Adele has a lot of nominations, but I don’t ever feel like there was any excitement for that video. … I would think this would go to Katy, though it’s not her most iconic video. It’s her message video, and it’s a clip that people talked about, and it has a lot of fireworks in it. Who could say no to that?” Best New Artist Big Sean (featuring Chris Brown), “My Last” Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks” Kreayshawn, “Gucci Gucci” Tyler, the Creator, “Yonkers” Wiz Khalifa, “Black and Yellow” Drew : “I think it’s Foster the People’s breakout year. This is a way to honor this band that is bubbling up and taking over. They’re kind of this year’s Kings of Leon, because everyone is talking about them.” Anderson : “It’s kind of weird that Foster the People are in there, but they seem to be peaking now, and they’ve had a slow burn. But this seems to be where they give Tyler the Moonman, even though I think the buzz around Odd Future has cooled off. … Of all these videos, when Tyler’s premiered everyone talked about it and he seems self-promotional enough and enough of a lightning rod [to make for good TV]. Plus, it’s hard to get that image of him playing with the cockroach out of my head.” Best Pop Video Adele, “Rolling in the Deep” Britney Spears, “Till the World Ends” Bruno Mars, “Grenade” Katy Perry, “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” Pitbull (featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer), “Give Me Everything” Drew : “I’ll give this one to Katy, because I think Adele will take Video of the Year, and they’ll want to give Katy something big and honor her for a slew of amazing videos. This one is the best; it’s so poppy and high-concept. Katy’s videos are a throwback to the great art of video making, while Adele’s is very simple.” Anderson : “There’s a lot of heavy hitters and, again, I would like to hand something shiny to Adele, but I don’t think of ‘Rolling’ as a pop song in the way the rest of them are. I’m a real sucker for Katy Perry, and I think the ‘Friday’ video is kind of awesome. It’s big and colorful, and she’s clearly into it and trying very hard. It’s a definitive statement of who she is and the year she’s had. Plus, any time you can get a Rebecca Black cameo in there …” Best Rock Video Cage the Elephant, “Shake Me Down” Foo Fighters, “Walk” Foster the People, “Pumped Up Kicks” Mumford & Sons, “The Cave” The Black Keys, “Howlin’ For You” Drew : “I have a feeling Foster will take Best New Artist, and this was the year of Mumford & Sons, so maybe this is the place to honor them. They had a high-concept video as well, but they could want to honor the veteran Foo Fighters because they did another one of their comedic, hilarious tongue-in-cheek videos.” Anderson : “I’m not a big Mumford fan, but I like that video because mopeds are funny. I think the win will go to the Foo Fighters, though. They’ve done parodies before, but it’s such a strange choice to pick ‘Falling Down’ as an inspiration, and in a weird way it works. It’s a movie about white-people problems, and there’s no better middle-age white-people problems band than the Foo Fighters. It’s the best song on that record, too, and it reminds of why that band is so great.” Best Video With a Message Eminem (featuring Rihanna), “Love the Way You Lie” Katy Perry, “Firework” Lady Gaga, “Born This Way” Pink, “F—– Perfect” Rise Against, “Make It Stop (September’s Children)” Taylor Swift, “Mean” Drew : “I think it’s clearly Lady Gaga. There hasn’t been that kind of example of a message song tied with a video in a long time, and the message is plastered across the video so strongly. Plus, they don’t want her to leave empty-handed, because when it comes to acceptance speeches, she gives a great, echoing message and it guarantees a great on-air moment.” Anderson : “My favorite video out of all of these is the Pink one. Even it goes through very well-trod material in music videos that appears in every Lifetime movie, it gets the point across in nice way. I know the song ‘Born This Way’ has a message, but I’m not sure that video has a message unless it’s about space travel. If I was a voter, I’d go for the Pink video, but of all of these, it seems like Katy’s works the best, if only because she’s never done anything like that before, whereas Eminem has a lot of videos about domestic violence. It’s such a departure for Katy, who grew up so sheltered and is just now engaging with these kinds of issues that it feels like it could be a thing that could help be a culmination of her crazy-ass year.” Best Hip-Hop Video Chris Brown (featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes), “Look at Me Now” Kanye West (featuring Rihanna and Kid Cudi), “All of the Lights” Lil Wayne (featuring Cory Gunz), “6 Foot, 7 Foot” Lupe Fiasco, “The Show Goes On” Nicki Minaj, “Super Bass” Anderson : “I really, really like that Wayne video if only because I’m very charmed by the idea that Lil Wayne would go see ‘Inception’ and say, ‘I gotta do that!’ It seems like exactly how his brain works, ‘I’ll slow-motion fall into water!’ But it seems like Nicki Minaj’s to lose. That song and video have been weirdly sticky.” Best Female Video Adele, “Rolling in the Deep” Beyonc

Katy Perry, Lil Wayne And More (Possible) VMA Winners

Bigger Than the Sound guesses who will take home Sunday’s biggest Moonmen. By James Montgomery Katy Perry Photo: Graham Denholm/ Getty Images The 2011 MTV Video Music Awards will air live on MTV this Sunday at 9 p.m. ET, but if you’re a Katy Perry fan, well, you probably knew that already. After all, the California Gurl is the most-nominated artist at this year’s VMAs, leading the pack with an eye-opening 10 nods, including Best Female Video, Best Pop Video and the biggie, Video of the Year. Following closely behind her are the likes of Adele, Kanye West and Bruno Mars, but really, all eyes will be on Perry. Will she take home her first-ever Moonman? Will she sweep the night’s major categories? And, most importantly of all, what color will her hair be? Of course, KP’s not the only story line heading into Sunday’s show: Can Gaga win the only major award she’s up for? Can Tyler, the Creator shock the world? Luckily, I’m here to provide answers. Much like I’ve done in previous years (and mostly because I have a rather insatiable gambling addiction), I’m throwing on the old prognostication cap and trying my hand at picking the winners in all the major VMA categories. Of course, while I can’t guarantee my accuracy, I can promise you that I spent, like, 25 minutes on this, which is a pretty thorough investment. Oh, and for the record, I’m going with “puce” for Katy’s hair color. The rest of my picks right now: Best Male Video
