‘Transformers: Dark Of The Moon’ Returns To IMAX

Michael Bay’s robot flick will hit theaters again on Friday and run for two weeks. By Terri Schwartz Bumblebee in “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” Photo: Paramount The moon will go dark again as Paramount gears up to re-release “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” in IMAX this Friday. The third “Transformers” flick is currently the second-highest-grossing film of the year in the U.S., coming in second to “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2” with $348.5 million. “Dark of the Moon” will get a second life in 246 IMAX theaters in North America beginning on Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter , and will run in IMAX through September 8. In most cases, that means the Michael Bay flick will screen alongside already running movies like “Deathly Hallows, Part 2,” “Cowboys & Aliens” and “Final Destination 5,” given that Steven Soderbergh’s soon-to-open “Contagion” doesn’t hit IMAX until September 9. Last year, “Avatar” made a similar move at the end of the summer, attempting to recapture moviegoers’ interest before the end of the blockbuster movie season. The major difference between re-releases for “Avatar” and “Dark of the Moon” is that James Cameron stuffed “Avatar” with nine more minutes of previously unreleased footage to entice moviegoers. While “Dark of the Moon” doesn’t have new footage, the newest releases haven’t been big draws at the box office and that may make it a good time to try to nab any stragglers who still want to see giant robots blow things up. Christopher Nolan’s Batman flick also benefited from this strategy. After its initial July 2008 opening, Warner Bros. gave “The Dark Knight” a February 2009 IMAX re-release . And even though the studio bypassed the summer movie season for the second release, the stunt still worked. There was plenty of residual interest in the flick following its Academy Awards success, and the second run helped push “Dark Knight” onto the list of the highest-grossing films of all time. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a trend in summers to come, with blockbuster films like “Prometheus,” “Men in Black III,” “The Amazing Spider-Man” and “The Dark Knight Rises” all set to hit theaters in 2012. Eminem And Bruno Mars Rise Up In New ‘Lighters’ Video

Em and Royce Da 5’9″ emerge from the darkness and find enlightenment in the new clip. By James Montgomery Eminem Photo: Michael Caulfield/WireImage Given its general grittiness (and the fact that it’s called Hell: The Sequel ), Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ ‘s Bad Meets Evil album seems like the last place you’d ever find Bruno Mars . And yet, the pompadour-powered crooner shows up to sing the hook on “Lighters” (he also produced the track with his Smeezingtons cohorts), a decidedly upbeat ballad that provides a brief respite from the blood-and-guts boasts that Em and Royce pack on the disc. And sure, the track feels out of place because of that fact, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming a rather sizeable Billboard hit. So it makes sense that there’d be an accompanying video that matches its uplift ethos every step of the way. And now, that video, directed by Rich Lee (“Not Afraid”), has arrived. In the new “Lighters” clip — which, it should be noted, does not contain a single lighter (though it does include the now-ubiquitous shot of Dre’s headphones) — Em and Royce journey from the darkness into the light, a metaphor that works rather well with the song’s message, if you think about it. Their voyage begins when Eminem discovers a secret chamber beneath his home, descends and wanders through a series of subterranean tunnels with only a flare to guide him. Royce is down there, too, though he’s locked up in a jail cell. He escapes thanks to a tunnel located behind a poster (“Shawshank” reference!). The two stumble through the dark, eventually breaking free, emerging into the light. When they finally do, the video reaches its rather (visually) stunning conclusion, as Em and Royce — plus an army of onlookers and Mars, who has been plaintively playing his piano the entire time — witness the slow ascension of a million paper lanterns, as the soft twilight slowly envelops them. It’s a stirring image, for sure, and yes, you can probably read plenty into it. Both Em and Royce have traveled dark roads in their past, but here, even if it’s just for one moment, one song, they’ve stumbled into the light. It’s sorta deep, and though it may not be in step with the messages they’re pushing on Hell: The Sequel, well, sometimes it’s nice to have a change of pace. Kanye West, Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne Scores Huge On Billboard

Album sold 436,000 in its first week, including a record 290,000 on iTunes. By Gil Kaufman Jay-Z and Kanye West Photo: Johnny Nunez/ WireImage The Throne will get a royal reception on the Billboard 200 albums charts next week. Watch the Throne , the superstar hookup between Kanye West and Jay-Z , sold more than 436,000 copies in its first week, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, putting up the second-biggest debut sales week of the year so far, behind Lady Gaga ‘s Born This Way, which moved 1.1 million. Thanks to a three-day iTunes exclusive that launched last Monday (August 8-10), the pair also reportedly broke the record for the biggest iTunes debut ever, selling almost 290,000 digital copies, enough to beat out former record-holder Coldplay ‘s Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends, which sold 282,000 copies in 2008. According to Billboard , with 321,000 total downloads, Throne is second only to Born This Way (662,000) for the biggest digital week ever. See what fans thought of the Watch the Throne pop-up store, which appeared in NYC last week. The album might have sold more, but some experts said its staggered release — following the iTunes exclusive, it was available to all digital and physical sellers on Friday, giving fans only two days to snatch it up before SoundScan’s tracking week ended on Sunday — may have curtailed its first-week sales potential. Either way, it’s a huge score for both rappers, earning Jay his 12th #1 album and Kanye his fifth. There are a few other debuts in the top 10, but they pale in comparison to the Throne numbers. Country singer Luke Bryan ‘s Tailgates & Tanlines comes in at #2 (145,000), the Now 39 compilation is just behind at #3 (110,000) and rapper Ace Hood hits #8 with Blood Sweat & Tears (26,000). The rest of the top 10: Adele ‘s 21 (#4, 73,000), Eric Church ‘s Chief (#5, 37,000), Jason Aldean ‘s My Kinda Party (#6, 36,000), Beyonc

Eminem Is Not To Be Messed With, Game Says

‘He’ll end your career,’ Game says of Em on ‘RapFix Live,’ following the release of his dis track ‘Uncle Otis.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Game Photo: MTV News The Game made headlines last month when he dropped “Uncle Otis,” a lyrical call-out session on which the Cali rapper poked fun at everyone from Jay-Z to Big Sean to Kreayshawn and 50 Cent . When it comes to hip-hop disses, Game isn’t gun-shy, but there is one MC he would never throw shots at. “One thing that stuck with me is that Eminem is not to be f—ed with ever in hip-hop, ever,” he told Sway on Wednesday’s “RapFix Live.” Though the pair once collaborated on “We Ain’t,” a track off of Game’s 2005 debut The Documentary, the Compton rapper’s famous feud with Eminem cohort 50 Cent has affected his and Slim Shady’s relationship. Though Game and Marshall no longer speak, Game holds a great amount of respect for the Detroit wordsmith. “If you notice out of everybody I take a shot at, that’s the only person that’s untouched. He’s in a bubble and you don’t even say nothing to Eminem. To anybody that ever does, God bless you,” Game said. “He’ll end your career.” Game, who is signed to Dr. Dre ‘s Aftermath records, got his start in 50’s G-Unit group, appearing on their mixtapes and collaborating with Fif himself. In 2005, a rift grew between the Game and 50 , and subsequent shots were fired as the two rappers’ camps butted heads outside of New York City’s Hot 97 radio station. The two tried to patch things up during a press conference in New York City a few months later, but the truce didn’t last. Game even told MTV News that Michael Jackson once tried to bring the two warring rappers together, but things didn’t pan out. The feud between Game and 50 affected both of their relationships with Dr. Dre, who has overseen both careers, and affected Game’s relationship with Eminem. “It just had to happen, man, and I was put into a situation where I had to defend myself lyrically and I did,” Game said of the many dis records he threw G-Unit’s way. “It wasn’t personal to anybody; I told that to Dre, I’ve told that to Paul Rosenberg, who manages Em, and the only the person I hadn’t spoke to about it was Em and 50.” “Sometimes stuff happens and I wish it had longevity,” he said of the Dre/50/Eminem relationship. “But it didn’t, so no regrets on my behalf.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Game, Diddy And Machine Gun Kelly Related Artists The Game Eminem Dr. Dre

Katy Perry And The VMAs: A History

The most-nominated artist of the 2011 show hasn’t taken home a Moonman yet, but she did take home a husband! By Jocelyn Vena Katy Perry at 2010 VMAs in Los Angeles Photo: WireImage The 2011 VMAs will honor a number of the year’s best artists, but one very kooky, colorful California Gurl is looking to outshine them all: Katy Perry tops the nominees with a whopping nine nods for “E.T.,” “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.),” “Teenage Dream” and “Firework.” Perry has yet to win a Moonman, but the show has played an important role in her career and personal life in other interesting ways. “It’s always exciting to be a part of the VMAs because there’s so much spontanaeity,” “I just remember growing up seeing craziness ensued with the VMAs. I wasn’t allowed to see it, but I done watched it!” Back in 2008, Kinga Burza, the director of “I Kissed a Girl,” warned MTV News that Perry would soon be a force to be reckoned with. “She’s fresh, original, intelligent and talented, with a star-like charisma, which will have boys and girls all around the world cooing for more!” Burza said. And she was right. Perry made her VMA debut that year, singing along with the night’s house band, Travis Barker and the late DJ AM . That night, “I Kissed a Girl” was up for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Female Video and Best New Artist. She went home empty-handed, but the show was the first time (and certainly not the last time) that she and host Russell Brand would cross paths. By the time 2009 rolled around, the VMAs were back in New York City, and Perry had become a household name. She was nominated for Best Female Video for “Hot n Cold” and opened the show with a rocking performance of Queen’s “We Will Rock You” alongside Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. Although she didn’t take any prizes home, she did manage to nab Brand , who hosted the show for a second year. Perry said she saw a different side of the comedian during and after the show. “I really appreciate his sense of humor,” she explained. “It’s real dark, it’s real wrong and it’s really funny.” In 2010, Perry hit the VMAs’ white-hot carpet in Los Angeles and was by then one of the biggest pop stars in the world. Her relationship with Brand had escalated to an engagement, and her sweet and sassy “California Gurls” video , featuring Snoop Dogg, was nominated for Best Female Video and Best Pop Video. “I like the idea of this being like a board game,” she said of the video in 2009. “It’s kind of like Candy Land. That was probably one of my favorite games to play growing up. I like to bring back those pure childhood moments and give them a little bit of a naughty twist, of course!” Perry is coming up on her fourth VMA appearance in 2011 and this could finally be her year. She’s back in her home state of California, she’s tied the knot with Brand, and she’s broken all sorts of records with the songs off her Teenage Dream album. Considering she’s up for hardware in categories like best Female Video (“Firework”), Video of the Year (“Firework”) and Best Collaboration (“E.T.”) featuring Kanye West, to name a few, her chances of bringing home a Moonman or two are looking good. The 28th annual MTV Video Music Awards will air live on Sunday, August 28, from the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Bruno Mars Tweets Excitement About VMA Nominations

With four nominations, Mars gives props to his choreographers, congratulates his competitors and urges ‘hooligans’ to vote. By Gil Kaufman Bruno Mars Photo: Getty Images Wednesday was a good day for Bruno Mars . The singer/songwriter, who has been on an epic roll over the past 12 months, got some seriously great news when it was revealed that he scored four nominations for this year’s MTV Video Music Awards . The man behind Cee Lo Green’s epic hit “Forget You,” not to mention hits by Travie McCoy and his own smashes such as “Just the Way You Are” and “The Lazy Song,” was beside himself when the news hit, tweeting a series of responses to his first-ever VMA noms . “VMAs!!!!” he wrote just as the announcements were going out, followed by “4 Nominations!?!?!?! THANK YOU @MTV.” He also gave some serious props to the “America’s Best Dance Crew” troupe Poreotics, who appeared disguised as monkeys in his “Lazy Song” video, which was nominated in the Best Choreography category. “YO @POREOTICS – LAZY SONG NOMINATED FOR BEST CHOREOGRAPHY!! #VMAs #MoNKeySwAG!!” he wrote. He had plenty of reason to celebrate, since the moody, piano-dragging video for “Grenade” is up for Video of the Year, competing against top nominee Katy Perry (“Firework”), Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”), Tyler the Creator (“Yonkers”) and the Beastie Boys (“Make Some Noise”). He gave shout-outs to the competition in that battle, saying, “@mtvnews @f—tyler @katyperry @beastieboys Damn!! All great videos!! Congrats to you guys. #SeriousCompetition.” “Grenade” is also in contention in the Best Male Video category, where it will face off against Green’s “Forget You,” Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Kanye West’s “All of the Lights,” and Justin Bieber’s “U Smile.” Mars’ fourth nomination is in the Best Pop Video race, where he faces Adele (“Rolling in the Deep”), Britney Spears (“Till the World Ends”), Perry (“Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” and Pitbull (“Give Me Everything”). At the end of the day, Mars just found it all hard to believe. “But seriously?? Who drags a piano across town in some church shoes??? The Brunz does!!! HOOLIGANS VOTE!!!” he encouraged his fans. Justin Bieber, Chris Brown Spotted In Studio Together

Pair has previously worked on two tracks together, ‘Up’ and ‘Next to You.’ By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber and Chris Brown Photo: Getty/WireImage Pals Justin Bieber and Chris Brown were spotted heading into a studio together on Monday. According to Rap-Up.com , the singers met up at the Record Plant in Hollywood. “Studio. #NEWMUSIC,” Bieber tweeted early Tuesday morning, leading us to believe the session was for his next album. Previously Bieber told MTV News that he wanted to focus less on features for his next album, but given the fact that Brown recently wrote a track for Joe Jonas , it’s possible he may have just been assisting with some writing. The rumored session marks the latest collaboration for the pair, who have appeared on two tracks together in the past. First, they remixed Bieber’s slow jam “Up,” then Bieber jumped on Brown’s ballad “Next to You.” Bieber’s producer, Danja, told Rap-Up.com that he’s aiming for an “edgier” sound for the 17-year-old’s next release. “What I’m creating for him I think is definitely a more mature sound. That’s where he’s headed now,” he explained. Earlier this year, Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, revealed some other names the pop star hopes to get into the studio with, including Drake, a collaboration Bieber hinted at last year. Bieber is also reportedly working with Kanye West. “Him and Kanye [West] had a call today about a song they’re trying to work on together,” Braun said. “Kanye wants to produce a bunch of songs for the new album.” Related Artists Chris Brown Justin Bieber
