New Edition Will ‘Never Forget’ Meeting Michael Jackson

Ricky Bell recalls to MTV News ‘going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs.’ By Rob Markman New Edition Photo: MTV News New Edition are fast approaching 30 years in the music biz, and the Boston boys have a ton of memories since dropping their debut album, Candy Girl, in 1983. For Johnny Gill, his favorite came in 1990 when NE reunited on the MTV Video Music Awards; for Ralph Tresvant, his best memory came after hearing the group’s song on the radio for the first time. Ricky Bell, nodded in agreement, but then recalled another special time — meeting the King of Pop. “I guess Ralph took my number one, but number two would probably be meeting Michael Jackson, being invited to his house. Going to the mansion and seeing him skip down the stairs,” Bell told MTV News before the group performed at DJ Cassidy’s 30th birthday party in New York City on July 6. “Just to meet someone, that icon who inspired you, is a moment I’ll never forget.” New Edition — which includes Bobby Brown, Tresvant, Gill, Bell, Ronnie DeVoe and Michael Bivins — are in the middle of a reunion run after performing in New Orleans at the 2011 Essence Music Festival . In addition to a number of shows they are performing together, NE also have a new album in the works, and if they have it their way, they will continue to add on to three decades’ worth of memorable moments. For Brown, though, it will always start at the beginning. “For me, 30 years would probably be just meeting them,” he said of his bandmates. “Meeting them and being able to have friends in my life and have brothers in my life that weren’t blood brothers, but they were my brothers and they took care of me.” Share your memories of New Edition’s nearly 30 years in the comments below! Eminem Calls Sway’s First Shade 45 Radio Show

MTV News correspondent tries to coax Em to freestyle on first broadcast of ‘Sway in the Morning.’ By Rob Markman MTV News’ Sway Calloway hosts the first day of his new radio show “Sway in the Morning” Photo: Michael Loccisano/ Getty Images Sway ‘s a.m. takeover has begun. On Monday (July 18), the MTV News correspondent broadcast his first episode of “Sway in the Morning” on Sirius XM’s Shade 45 , and in addition to playing hip-hop’s hottest tunes, he conducted interviews with Bun B, Lupe Fiasco, Diggy Simmons, Estelle and “Entourage” actor Jerry Ferrara; even Eminem called in to toast the new host. “You played such a vital part in my career and such a big role in hip-hop, we’re just happy to have you,” Eminem, who owns Shade 45, said to Sway. But when Calloway asked for a freestyle, Em joked, “It might be dial tone.” Sway also unearthed an old interview that he conducted with Em, dating back to when the rapper first signed with Dr. Dre. ‘When Em got signed, he came to our house in L.A., and he was just like, ‘Man, I got this opportunity with Dre,’ ” Sway recalled of his and King Tech’s earlier interactions with Em on their legendary on-air “Wake Up Show” in the late 1990s. “Then we had him come up on the radio show to make that announcement and he busted a freestyle, so we played that segment.” That wasn’t all for the debut broadcast: Sway, who co-hosted with Houston on-air personality Devi Dev, played a portion of a never-before-aired interview with the late Tupac Shakur from the set of his “How Do U Want It” video. In the clip, ‘Pac expresses his love for Oakland and downplays the East Coast/ West Coast rivalry of the mid-1990s. “I felt like whatever I am, the Bay Area had something to do with making. So if I’m bad, they had something to do with making me. If I’m good, then they had something to do with making me,” ‘Pac says before showing love to the various cities where he spent his formative years. “Between the East Coast, the Bay Area, L.A. and Baltimore, those places made me.” “All in all, it was good,” Sway told us after the show wrapped on Monday. “We played a lot of hip-hop music and made a good relationship [with the listeners]. I’m going to try to tie in all of these worlds: MTV, Shade 45, pop, politics, culture, music, all of that. At the end of the day, that’s the vision for the show.” Related Artists Eminem

Eminem Breaks Digital Sales Record

When it comes to breaking records in the hip hop arena, Eminem is the man to beat. Besides selling millions of albums in a rapidly declining industry, Em is one of  two rappers to have won the Best Rap Album Grammy each time they’ve released a disc. The other person in that club is Kanye West . Today marks another milestone in the career of the Detroit rapper. It was announced that after being released about a year ago, Recovery is the first album to sell a million digital copies. Interscope’s Vice Chairman Steve Berman stated, “ Recovery selling one million digital albums is an incredible achievement by an incredible artist. I have had the pleasure of working with Eminem throughout the course of his career, and I’m delighted to be a part of yet another milestone on his amazing journey.” Em’s manager, Paul Rosenberg added, “We are thrilled to congratulate Eminem on the history-making digital sales success of  Recovery. Over the years we’ve made a concerted effort to engage Em’s online fan base so this achievement is especially rewarding. Eminem made an amazing album with Recovery and the fans responded in record numbers.” You know how the saying goes, “Men lie. women lie. numbers don’t.” Congratulations Eminem. Eminem Surprised Jim Jonsin By Making ‘Space Bound’ A Single

Producer tells MTV News of sending track to Em, in Mixtape Daily. By Rob Markman Eminem on the set of his “Space Bound” music video Photo: Eric Ford / On Location News Behind the Beats: Jim Jonsin Before Eminem could make the heart-wrenching “Space Bound” a hit single, the song’s producer, Jim Jonsin, had to rework the track, which he had previously recorded with British songwriter Steve McEwan. “It was actually a full song with verses, b-section, chorus,” Jonsin told MTV News of the original Eminem-less version. “Me and Steve McEwan actually wrote the song, we actually did it here in New York on guitar — it was just a guitar vocal on an iPhone,” the multiplatinum producer said. “We took the idea later in Miami, like three months after, and produced the track, and we sent it out to Eminem to see what he thought about it. He loved it. So he interpreted it his own way.” The initial concept remained mostly intact, and the song’s chorus acted as a guide for the Detroit MC to add his own twist. “The chorus was based off of a chase, a guy who’s chasing after a woman that he’s crazy about,” Jonsin said of the theme. “He loves her; she’s everything to him. I’m a rocket ship aiming at her heart, her heart’s the moon — I’m going full-on.” It was Jonsin’s manager who suggested that he send the track to Slim Shady, which he did, even though he didn’t believe anything would come of it. “He had me strip down the verses, take them out, and make the track a little more hip-hop, and he sent it out,” he said. “I didn’t really believe that it would end up on Eminem’s album, let alone be a single.” The video for “Space Bound,” now the fourth single off of Em’s multiplatinum 2010 Recovery album, was released last week on iTunes. The clip, which stars ex-porn actress Sasha Grey, depicts a rocky romance that eventually leads the rapper to kill himself with a single shot to the head. Eminem’s ‘Space Bound’ Video Is ‘Tricky,’ Jim Jonsin Says

‘It reminded me of Alanis Morissette’s ‘Ironic’ video, where she’s got her and her two other egos in the car,’ song’s producer tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Eminem on the set of “Space Bound” Photo: Eric Ford / On Location News Everyone seems to have their own take on Eminem’s new “Space Bound” video , in which the Detroit MC commits suicide after finding out that his girlfriend is cheating on him. The song’s producer, Jim Jonsin, likened the clip to a movie, and while the video is indeed shocking, he believes Eminem is clearly playing a character. “Things happen in movies all the time. People kill themselves, people get killed, they kill other people,” the multiplatinum producer explained to MTV News on Monday. “When my kids watch it, I like to explain to them in that manner: ‘It’s like a movie, ya know? He isn’t really killing himself.’ ” Jonsin, who was on set when the Joseph Kahn-directed vid was shot in February, suggested that viewers watch the clip a few times to figure out the plot and then draw their own conclusion. “The video itself, it’s tricky to figure out what’s going on in certain scenes,” he said. “It’s going to take them a moment to figure out why he did it. It’s not exactly spelled out, like, ‘I killed myself because this girl drove me to it or she’s cheating on me or she’s texting some other dude,’ or whatever it might be. So you’re still guessing a little bit.” Another element of the video that can be interpreted in a few ways is the two different versions of Eminem that appear onscreen simultaneously. Sasha Grey, who plays the rapper’s girlfriend in “Space Bound,” sees one of the two Shadys as Em’s subconscious. Jonsin had a similar take and compared the visual to Alanis Morissette’s 1996 video for her hit single “Ironic.” “It reminded me of Alanis Morissette’s ‘Ironic’ video, where she’s got her and her two other egos in the car,” he said, before turning the conversation back to Em. “I think it was him living in the now as a person going through it and him living as a person who is witnessing it and can make other choices to not be in that scenario. Maybe he would’ve chose differently, so now he’s watching himself.” How did you interpret Em’s video? Let us know in the comments below! Mark Wahlberg and Allen Hughes May Team On Noir Crime Drama Broken City

This is a fiery matchup for the ages: Mark Wahlberg (who once sparred with Eminem on Total Request Live ), and director/producer Allen Hughes (who once sued Tupac Shakur for attacking him on the set of a music video), may join forces on Broken City , “a noir-style drama about an ex-cop turned private detective who is hired by the mayor to see if his wife is cheating on him.” Ooh. Vertigo meets Chinatown meets even more shadows. For novelty’s sake, I hope they throw in a fight with a rapper. [ Deadline ]
