Eminem Co-Star Sasha Grey Interprets Suicidal ‘Space Bound’ Video

‘Even the strongest of love meets destruction at some point,’ the ex-porn star tells MTV News. By Rob Markman Sasha Grey on the set of Eminem’s “Space Bound” video Photo: Eric Ford/On Location News There have been quite a few takes on the meaning Eminem’s “Space Bound” video, in which we see two sides of a suicidal, love-torn rapper. Since the clip hit iTunes on Friday, fans have taken to comment sections dishing out theories about its meaning. Some have said this is another depiction of Em’s relationship with ex-wife Kim Mathers, while others likened the clip to a video game. And Eminem ‘s co-star in the video, Sasha Grey, has her own take on the video. Grey, who no longer works in porn, is now expanding her acting chops. She appeared, as did Em, on the seventh season of HBO’s hit series “Entourage,” and though the two never met on set, she got the offer to star in “Space Bound” at the request of the video’s director, Joseph Kahn. The clip features alternate versions of the Detroit MC, one agitated and cynical in the company of his girlfriend (played by Grey), the other more pensive and calm. “You can read into it a few different ways, but I imagine one character is actually him, and the other is his subconscious,” Grey said. Things begin to take a turn for the worse when the rapper discovers the love of his life is cheating on him. He later attacks her, then turns a gun on himself and commits suicide with a single shot through the head. “Space Bound,” like “Love the Way You Lie” depicts a tumultuous relationship in which domestic violence once again is a topic. “Em simply becomes company for her, and she mistakenly takes advantage of that,” Grey says of her character. “Before each take, Joseph and I would talk a lot about her motives and attitude. Her ultimate moment doesn’t come until the end, so I had plenty of time to build the fear!” Grey doesn’t have a clear-cut explanation of the video, but she ultimately sees “Space Bound” from a pessimistic view — hopeless romantics take heed. “I don’t know if it necessarily has a thorough message, but I think it shows that even the strongest of love meets destruction at some point,” the ex-porn star told MTV News. “Whether or not you come out of it together and whole is an entirely different question.” Related Photos Eminem’s ‘Space Bound’ Video Shoot Related Artists Eminem

Eminem Takes His Own Life In ‘Space Bound’ Video

Em plays two versions of himself in eerie clip co-starring porn star Sasha Grey. By Rob Markman Eminem on the set of his “Space Bound” music video Photo: Eric Ford / On Location News Just when we thought Eminem had fully escaped his demons following the release of his multiplatinum 2010 album Recovery, Marshall Mathers takes his own life with a single gunshot to the head in his new “Space Bound” video, which is now available on iTunes. The video is a gut-wrenching look into another of Eminem’s tumultuous relationships, much like the one exhibited in the video for “Love the Way You Lie” — this time with deadly results. Filmed in Los Angeles in February, the Joseph Kahn-directed clip starts with our leading man walking down a foggy road in the middle of the night. Obviously perturbed, a sullen Em marches on, hands in his pockets, until a passing car picks him up. In the driver’s seat is the Detroit rapper’s love interest, played by porn star Sasha Grey. Things clearly aren’t all peaches and cream. Eminem jumps in the front passenger seat, with a pensive look on his face, while another, more cynical version of Em rides in the back. The differences between the two Shadys are apparent. The front-seat version is calm, with his eyes darting back and forth between his girlfriend and the gun that sits in the glove compartment. The other Em is riled up, hurling insults at Grey, though she is unaware of his presence. As the couple pulls up to a pit stop, Grey exits the vehicle first with a gun in her back pocket, while Em follows her. They enter a diner, Grey first and the rapper a few steps behind. Here, the director splits the screen and the two Eminems go their separate ways, one to the counter and the other to the booth where his girlfriend sits, texting on her cell phone. Eminem grows suspicious of the texts and checks his girl’s phone after she gets up to go to the bathroom. The rapper apparently finds what he has long suspected: His woman is cheating. Throughout the video, Eminem follows Grey like a lost puppy. It’s when they check into a motel room that the drama unfolds. Closing the door behind him, Eminem begins to attack his girlfriend before realizing that she wasn’t even there in the first place. Left at the end of his rope, Eminem pulls out the gun, puts it to his chin and fires a single shot through his own head. Blood splatters, and Shady falls to the floor. Simultaneously, the alternate Eminem, who is still seated at the counter, is struck by the bullet as well, falling back off of his bar stool before the clip rewinds back to the beginning of the 4:30 video, where we once again see our leading man walking down that foggy road in the middle of the night. Did Eminem imagine the entire ordeal? Or did his cheating girlfriend metaphorically kill the hopeless romantic, leaving only a distrustful version of himself? The image is jarring; the interpretation, however, is up to you. How did you interpret Eminem’s “Space Bound” video? Tell us in the comments. Related Artists Eminem

Adele Reschedules North American Tour Dates

Singer will hit the road again on August 9 in Vancouver following her doctor-ordered hiatus due to laryngitis. By Jocelyn Vena Adele Photo: Stefan M. Prager/Redferns After canceling her North American tour earlier this month due to laryngitis, Adele has just announced the rescheduled dates for the trek. She will resume performing beginning on August 9 in Vancouver. After the stop in Canada, the tour circles back around to missed tour dates on the West Coast and in the Midwest, wrapping up on August 24. Adele is also set to add six more dates to the tour, stopping in Las Vegas; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Durham, North Carolina; Orlando, Florida; Miami; and Spring, Texas from October 7 through October 21. Despite the health setback, Adele’s album 21 has been bouncing around the top of the charts for more than three months now. Atop the charts for the last 10 of the 17 weeks it’s been out, this week it lands at #3, falling behind Bad Meets Evil ‘s (better known as Eminem and Royce Da 5’9”) Hell: The Sequel as well as 11-year-old “America’s Got Talent” soprano opera singer Jackie Evancho’s Dream With Me . So, why is Adele so unstoppable this year? “It shows the power … of her fanbase. You’ve got a song that’s performing very, very well, still being discovered by new people every week,” Nielsen SoundScan’s senior vice president of analytics Dave Bakula told MTV News. “You’ve got an artist here who wasn’t a household name prior to this record coming out, so you do still have that discovery process going on with her. “What it really goes to show is the fact that there still are that many people discovering the album every week,” he added. “I think it shows a lot about the latent demand that is out there for great music.” Related Artists Adele

Eminem And Royce Weren’t ‘Focused’ On Hitting #1 — But They Did

‘I knew it had the potential,’ Royce Da 5’9″ tells MTV News after Bad Meets Evil’s Hell: The Sequel tops Billboard albums chart. By Rob Markman Royce Da 5’9″ and Eminem Photo: MTV News Eminem should be used to the #1 spot by now, but it’s all new to partner-in-rhyme Royce Da 5’9″. On Wednesday, Em and Royce’s Bad Meets Evil EP , Hell: The Sequel, topped the Billboard albums chart, selling almost 171,000 copies in its first week, making it Nickel Nine’s first time in the top spot. “You know I ain’t never sold no records,” Royce said to MTV News, laughing. “I knew it had the potential. I just really was more focused on the whole ‘critically acclaimed’ thing, and I think we achieved that. I’m only hearing good things about how people feel about the album.” From the onset, both Royce and Em stated that Hell: The Sequel wasn’t made with commercial aspirations. Instead, the duo — who first released an independent single (featuring “Scary Movies,” ‘Nuthin’ to Do” and “I’m King”) in 1999 — looked to rekindle the lyrical chemistry that they harnessed 12 years ago. “I think it’s great for an artist of Eminem’s stature to do a project like this, especially with a dude like me,” Royce reinforced. “And to only focus on lyrics and not worry about performance or radio or nothing like that. To go in there spitting, I think, is refreshing to hip-hop.” Though radio wasn’t the goal, Royce remains optimistic that the EP’s next single, “Lighters,” which features Bruno Mars, will ensure the continued success of Hell: The Sequel. “I definitely think that ‘Lighters’ is gonna be the record that is gonna carry the sales into something even bigger than what the first week was. Because of a record like ‘Lighters’ and what it’s doing on radio right now, the first-week sales aren’t even an indicator of where we’re going to end up after we close up with this project,” he said. Eminem Producer Denaun Porter Gets ‘Serious’ On Bad Meets Evil EP

D12 member shares executive-producer credit with Em on Hell: The Sequel. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Denaun Porter Photo: MTV News As a producer, Denaun Porter is quite accomplished. In addition to producing 50 Cent’s hit “P.I.M.P.” and G-Unit’s 2003 single “Stunt 101,” the beatmaker, who doubles as a rapper in the group D12, has crafted tracks for Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Game and Busta Rhymes. With all that he’s done, though, for the first time, Mr. Porter has earned an executive-producer credit on Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″ ‘s Bad Meets Evil EP . While the distinction was a definite goal for Mr. Porter, he remains humble about it, choosing to let his work speak for itself. In fact, he’s worked on many albums and sometimes didn’t receive the credit that he’s earned, and he’s OK with that. “I’m not the kind of producer where I’m gonna say, ‘Yo, I did this, I did this, I did this.’ I want it to be my work,” he told Sway on the set of Bad Meets Evil’s “Fast Lane” video. “I come from the [Dr.] Dre school; we don’t talk about it. I do it, though. You put me in that room, I’ll show you.” Denaun produced four of the nine tracks on Hell: The Sequel as well as “Living Proof,” which appears as a bonus track on the deluxe version of the EP. “Em even came in the studio one day, like, ‘Yo, homey, you’re showing your ass.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m not playing now’ — it’s that serious to me,” Porter said. With all the work he put in, the Shady camp named Mr. Porter co-executive producer of Hell: The Sequel, along with Eminem. Despite their personal relationship and ties to D-12, however, Mr. Porter’s involvement on Em’s albums is never a given. He did produce Eminem’s 1996 underground album Infinite in its entirety, but when Denaun has landed tracks on Slim Shady’s major-label albums, it’s usually only a track or two. “I was making it hard for him. I was just bringing the heat to him,” Porter said of how he ended up landing so many beats on the Bad Meets Evil project. “I had my mind made up that I didn’t want to do one joint here, because for years, I was just doing ’em when I felt like it. Now it’s like I got something to prove.” What do you think of the Porter-produced Bad Meets Evil tracks? Let us know in the comments! Tyler, The Creator Defends His Use Of Other F-Word

‘I have gay fans and they don’t really take it offensive,’ Odd Future frontman tells MTV News. By Rob Markman, with reporting by Matt Elias Tyler, the Creator Photo: MTV News Tyler, the Creator and his Odd Future cohorts have raised more than a few eyebrows on their way to rap notoriety. But while their followers praise the collective for their refreshing sound, as well as their renegade approach, some critics have argued that OF are pushing the boundaries of what should be acceptable in rap. On its website, Fader magazine analyzed Tyler’s Goblin album and counted 204 uses of the word “f—,” 68 of the word “bitch” and nine variations of “f–” or “f—-t,” an observation that has some asking whether the polarizing rapper is a misogynistic homophobe. We caught up with the OF frontman this week in Los Angeles and put the question to him. “Well, I have gay fans and they don’t really take it offensive, so I don’t know. If it offends you, it offends you,” Tyler told MTV News of his gay slurs. “If you call me a n—a, I really don’t care, but that’s just me, personally. Some people might take it the other way; I personally don’t give a sh–.” And there you have it. Tyler’s growing fanbase includes a host of major rappers who support the MC. In fact, during an interview with Sway, Eminem gave props to OFWGKTA. “I’ve heard enough to know that it feels like they’re pushing boundaries and buttons, and that’s definitely one of the things that I’m familiar with, especially when I first came out,” Eminem told MTV News on the set of Bad Meets Evil’s “Fast Lane” video in Detroit. “I love it; I love the fact that they’re doing that. And the dudes can rhyme.” Do you find Tyler’s lyrics offensive? Share your thoughts in the comments. Related Artists Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All

Bad Meets Evil Hookman Was ‘Star Struck’ By Eminem And Royce

Sly Pyper describes how he overcame his nervousness to sing on ‘Fast Lane.’ By Rob Markman, with reporting by Sway Calloway Royce Da 5’9″ and Eminem Photo: Matt Harper / MTV News Singer Sly Pyper has already made quite the name for himself. After lending his vocals to Dr. Dre’s first Detox single “Kush,” Sly had many fans thinking the Doc had unearthed a recording of the now late Nate Dogg. But now, thanks to Bad Meets Evil’s “Fast Lane” video, folks can put a face to the soulful voice. MTV News caught up with Sly on a recent trip to Detroit and got the scoop on how he landed the high-profile feature. “It’s part of the many years I’ve actually been working with Dr. Dre,” Sly said of his involvement on “Fast Lane,” the first single off of Eminem and Royce Da 5’9” ‘s EP Hell: The Sequel, which dropped on Tuesday (June 14). “Recently, we came out to Detroit, and [Dre] was doing some collabs with Em already. Em had part of a hook that he asked me to come and just lay my vocals on, lay the velvet on. So I got involved, wrote a couple of pieces on the hook as well.” Even after laying the chorus alongside Akon on Dre’s “Kush,” Sly admits that his nerves started to get the best of him while he was in the studio with Slim Shady. “It was a little nervous at first, I could admit that,” he said. “But I kinda felt like I knew them already just from the music. I kinda felt like we were from a similar place, so I let that stand out more than my nervousness about being star struck. That just won everything over, made it easier for everybody.” Hell: The Sequel reunites Eminem and Royce Da 5’9″, who originally recorded together as Bad Meets Evil for Em’s Slim Shady LP and for the independent single “Scary Movies” back in 1999. After a rift between the two, Bad Meets Evil seemed like a pipe dream for rap fans. That was until Em went and signed Royce’s quartet, Slaughterhouse, to his Shady Records earlier this year. With the fences mended, Royce and Em began working on Hell: The Sequel in a most organic fashion. “We didn’t get together and say, ‘Hey, man, let’s make a Bad Meets Evil record,’ ” Em said in a interview with MTV News. It was more so along the lines of us making amends and repairing our issues that we had, and then one day, Bad [Royce] brought a song to me and wanted me to jump on it, and the way it ended up coming out, it was pretty easy to do. It didn’t take a lot of time. It was fun to do it. The way we knocked that record out kind of quickly … it just morphed into this.” Related Videos ‘RapFix Live’ With Eminem And Royce Da 5’9″ Related Artists Eminem Royce Da 5’9″
