VIDEO: Kurt Russell, Sarah Silverman and Dozens More Sing ‘We Are the World’ for Funny or Die

Considering we’re only about four weeks away from Christmas — insert prerequisite “where did the year go?!” quip here — it’s about that time for celebrities to remember the less fortunate among us. With that in mind, here’s Comedy Death-Ray and Funny or Die presenting “We Are the World 25.75,” an almost anniversary celebration of the Quincy Jones supersong in support of the LA Regional Foodbank. Before you get too excited though, heed the words of Kurt Russell: “I want to stress that these are not good singers. This does not sound good at all.”

Why Irvin Kershner Mattered

Irvin Kershner has died at the age of 87. He leaves behind some recognizable films ( The Flim Flam Man with George C. Scott; Eyes of Laura Mars with Faye Dunaway) and several sequels of various prominence ( The Return of a Man Called Horse , Robocop II and the renegade James Bond film Never Say Never Again ), never afraid to explore and extend the story of someone else’s work. So, really, it’s not a huge surprise in hindsight that he accepted the challenge of The Empire Strikes Back , the 1980 effort continuing the story that George Lucas started three years earlier with Star Wars . But could anybody have expected Kershner to knock this particular sequel out of the f*cking park?

Steven Antin On Burlesque, Wooing Cher, and Discovering Ian Somerhalder

Writer-director Steven Antin would like to set a few stories straight. First, he wasn’t born in Portland. He’s a native New Yorker who grew up in Los Angeles, where he and his now-famous siblings — stylist Jonathan, Pussycat Dolls founder Robin, actor Neil — all wound up working in showbiz. Antin barely knew Cher before she agreed to star in his new film, Burlesque , though they both reportedly dated music mogul David Geffen at different times, years ago. And contrary to the notion that he’s come out of nowhere to direct the razzle-dazzliest film of the holiday season, Antin’s an industry veteran who’s spent a lot of time hustling to bring his passion project to the big screen after a career in which he’s gone from teen movie actor to indie filmmaker to television producer and beyond.

Mark Hoppus Compares ‘Star Wars’ To ‘Twilight’

Blink-182 frontman says not seeing a ‘Twilight’ movie would be like ‘somebody coming up to me and saying [they] never saw ‘Star Wars.’ By Jocelyn Vena Mark Hoppus Photo: MTV News The teens of the new millennium wait anxiously for the day they can hit up their local cinema and check out the latest installment of “The Twilight Saga,” but 30 or so years ago that’s how teens felt about each and every episode of “Star Wars.” So when the stars, including Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “The Empire Strikes Back” , it seemed fitting to note that if you didn’t see this film in the theaters all those years ago, it was kind of like missing an episode of “Twilight.” But first Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus explained to MTV News at the event just why “Empire” is still such a beloved part of the “Star Wars” franchise. “I think that this movie has a longevity because it kicks so much ass, and it’s definitely my favorite movie of all time. And I think that it … has a really amazing second-act feel to it,” he said. “It’s really dark. It’s moody. It’s not just an action/adventure. There’s all these different elements that come into it. There’s betrayal and there’s discovery. It’s a really great movie.” That sounds similar to the second act of “Twilight,” “New Moon,” which sees itself pitted against “Avatar” at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Hoppus admits he feels kind of silly for not yet having seen this generation’s pivotal flick. “I have not seen the new ‘Twilight,’ ” he said. “I don’t know. I suppose for this generation that’s like somebody coming up to me and saying [they] never saw ‘Star Wars.’ ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
