Back On The Dude Ranch: Blink-182’s Breakthrough Record Turns 20

The first words uttered on Blink-182’s second full-length LP, 1997’s Dude Ranch, are spit out with a self-protective speed. “I know I’m pathetic / I knew when she said it,” bassist Mark Hoppus hisses. His partner in crime, guitarist Tom DeLonge, chimes in with his own sad-sack line before Hoppus can take a breath: “A… Read more »

Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus Recalls Roof Diving, On ‘When I Was 17’

‘It’s a miracle that we’re still here,’ he says on latest episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT on MTV. By Lauren Kearney Mark Hoppus appears on “When I Was 17” Photo: MTV On the next episode of “When I Was 17,” Mark Hoppus, bassist for blink-182 and host of Fuse’s “Hoppus on Music,” sheds light on what his life was like before he was asking “What’s my age again?” Surprisingly (except not at all), he was as out of control back then as he is now, as he reveals on the episode, airing Saturday at 11 a.m. ET/PT. “We were really smart as high-schoolers. We had a friend, his name was Dave, he had a two-story house, and in the backyard of his house was a pool. And his parents would leave for days at a time, so of course, Dave’s a responsible guy, he wouldn’t let anything bad happen. So we would jump off a second-story roof into the pool,” admitted Hoppus, who just finished up on the Honda Civic Tour alongside My Chemical Romance . “We called it Acapulco cliff diving.” “It was definitely high enough so that if you jumped in, you had to turn your body as soon as possible so that you didn’t eat your knees,” he added. While at first it started off safe — well, sort of — Acapulco cliff diving soon became more and more competitive as time went on. “At first I think it was cannonballs and feet first, and then we’d one-up each other and by the end, people were doing flips. I definitely dove headfirst into this pool. It’s a miracle that we’re still here.” And a miracle it is, Mark. Because we can’t imagine what life would have been like without some Blink-182. Don’t miss this week’s episode of “When I Was 17,” featuring Mark Hoppus, Sean Kingston and Tiffani Thiessen, at 11 a.m. Saturday on MTV. Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus Reveals Neighborhoods Inspiration

‘We’re each like different neighborhoods in a city,’ Blink bassist tells MTV News of his bandmates. By James Montgomery Mark Hoppus Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images Last week was a big one for Blink-182 … and their fans. Not only did the band debut “Up All Night,” their first new song in almost eight years, but they revealed the title of their much-anticipated new album, too: Neighborhoods. Of course, while all of this was happening, Blink bassist and vocalist Mark Hoppus was e-mailing MTV News , first to express his excitement about the new music, and then to reveal just how “Up All Night” went from being a rehearsal favorite to Blink’s official comeback single . And now he’s at it again, this time talking about the inspiration behind the album’s title. As is the case with everything involving Blink these days, it seems the Neighborhoods name owes much to the long road Blink have taken since going on indefinite hiatus back in 2005. “As Blink-182 reformed, we came to realize that, as close as Travis [Barker], Tom [DeLonge] and I are, we are all very different people. With very different tastes. Travis just released a hip-hop album, Tom always talks about U2, Coldplay and the Police, and I listen to obscure indie rock stuff,” Hoppus wrote. “We each bring a very different aesthetic, talent and sound to the band. And in the differences between our ideas, the struggle and edge of all the different directions, is where the good things happen when we write together. “So we’re each like different neighborhoods in a city. Everybody in the world thinks of something unique unto themselves when they hear the word ‘Neighborhoods,’ ” he continued. “To some it is a big city, others a small town, others suburbia, everything. The world is wide, exciting and very different. That’s what Neighborhoods means to me.” Blink-182 will return to the road alongside My Chemical Romance on the 2011 Honda Civic Tour, which kicks off August 5 in Holmdel, New Jersey. Neighborhoods is tentatively due in stores on September 27. Related Artists blink-182

Mark Hoppus Says Blink-182 Are ‘Working Very Hard’ On New Album

Backing up drummer Travis Barker’s recent claims, the bassist maintains that Blink’s long-awaited new album will hit stores this summer. By James Montgomery Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus Photo: MTV News Back in February, Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker told MTV News that his band’s long-in-the-works album would finally be finished in “June or July,” an announcement that was greeted with much joy — and skepticism — from fans who have seemingly been waiting forever to hear new music from the trio. Because, truth be told, they’ve heard talk like this before … in fact, at this point, the project carries with it a timeline that stretches all the way back to February 2009 — when Blink-182 announced that they were not only reuniting, but “in the studio writing and recording a new album” — and has included supposed release dates in 2010 and 2011 . But now, it really, truly seems like the still-untitled album is entering the home stretch. Not only did Mark Hoppus post a brand-new studio clip on his Facebook page late Tuesday, but when MTV News spoke to the bassist last week — back when Blink-182 were still in the hunt for the Musical March Madness championship — he backed up Barker’s claims of a summer release. For real. “The timeline! The Blink-182 timeline! Always an interesting point of discussion!” Hoppus laughed. “We are still planning for an early-to-midsummer release, we’re working very hard at it. Right now Travis is back on the road, so I’m back in L.A. working on the record, [guitarist Tom DeLonge’s] working on the record, we’re sending stuff to Travis; as soon as [he] gets back, hopefully Tom and I will have the album in a shape where Travis can come in and we can spend, you know, a month, month-and-a-half working really hard on pounding out the album and get it done.” Hoppus explained that most of the recording’s delay has been due to the way Blink have chosen to work this time around — in bits and pieces, alone and together, in a pair of California studios — which has everything to do with each member’s rather, uh, busy schedules. “It’s definitely a very different process … before, at least we were all in the same room at the same time,” he said. “With this, with Travis having his solo record, me being in L.A., and Tom doing his stuff and also being in San Diego, at first it felt like maybe it was a bit piecemeal, but now it feels like we’re getting into a good rhythm. “Between sending songs back and forth to each other, we’ll all meet up in the studio every few weeks and go over everything, listen down to everything and I’ll say, ‘OK, I love what you did with this idea. Let me take this song for a week and try some ideas on it,’ ” he continued. “And I’ll take a song for a week, try a bunch of stuff on it, present it back to everybody else, they’ll make their comments and then move on from there.” So, yes, Blink are holding fast to a summer release. And in spite of their packed schedules — and despite everything you may think — they are making progress toward that goal. One song at a time. “It really depends on the day how finished songs are … there’s songs that I think are finished that we go back and work on some more, there’s songs that I think are going to take a long time and they end up progressing pretty quickly,” Hoppus explained. “I feel like we’ve worked on about 16 tracks, of which 12 of those are making the cut. When songs don’t seem to be working, we let them fall by the wayside, and I think we’re pretty good about putting the better songs forward. So, we’re working on 12, five or six of those are in states that are near completion, and the other ones are formed ideas with structures and parts — they just need filling in. The skeletons are all there, we just need to fill in the pieces.” Are you excited about possibly finally getting the chance to hear new music from Blink-182? Tell us in the comments. Mark Hoppus Compares ‘Star Wars’ To ‘Twilight’

Blink-182 frontman says not seeing a ‘Twilight’ movie would be like ‘somebody coming up to me and saying [they] never saw ‘Star Wars.’ By Jocelyn Vena Mark Hoppus Photo: MTV News The teens of the new millennium wait anxiously for the day they can hit up their local cinema and check out the latest installment of “The Twilight Saga,” but 30 or so years ago that’s how teens felt about each and every episode of “Star Wars.” So when the stars, including Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, gathered to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “The Empire Strikes Back” , it seemed fitting to note that if you didn’t see this film in the theaters all those years ago, it was kind of like missing an episode of “Twilight.” But first Blink-182 frontman Mark Hoppus explained to MTV News at the event just why “Empire” is still such a beloved part of the “Star Wars” franchise. “I think that this movie has a longevity because it kicks so much ass, and it’s definitely my favorite movie of all time. And I think that it … has a really amazing second-act feel to it,” he said. “It’s really dark. It’s moody. It’s not just an action/adventure. There’s all these different elements that come into it. There’s betrayal and there’s discovery. It’s a really great movie.” That sounds similar to the second act of “Twilight,” “New Moon,” which sees itself pitted against “Avatar” at the 2010 MTV Movie Awards . Hoppus admits he feels kind of silly for not yet having seen this generation’s pivotal flick. “I have not seen the new ‘Twilight,’ ” he said. “I don’t know. I suppose for this generation that’s like somebody coming up to me and saying [they] never saw ‘Star Wars.’ ” For breaking news, celebrity columns, humor and more — updated around the clock — visit MTVMoviesBlog.com .
