Natural Gas Use to Double in US in Coming Decades: MIT Report

photo: citylovesyou_ffm via flickr After two years of study, researchers from MIT have forecast natural gas use in the United States doubling in the coming decades, increasing energy market share to 40%. That increase comes largely because natural gas eventually replaces more coal in electricity generation thanks to future carbon emissions reduction policy. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Kristen Stewart Says She Shares Fans’ ‘Passion’ For ‘Twilight Saga’

‘I feel like I’m one of them,’ she tells MTV News at ‘Eclipse’ L.A. premiere. By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Kristen Stewart Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images Kristen Stewart has come a long way from the shy, anxious actress fans and reporters first encountered around the time of the first “Twilight” film’s release. When MTV News caught up with the saga’s heroine on the “Eclipse” premiere’s black carpet Thursday night (June 24), Stewart was all smiles and visibly bubbly with positive energy. “I actually am quite excited,” she said about being at the premiere. “I don’t know why I’m not nervous. I think we’ve done a bunch of these events now, and I’ve always said that the energy is always undeniable, but right now, it feels positive and great.” Stewart acknowledged the consistent fan support as one of the “Twilight”-related gifts for which she’s most grateful. “It’s cool for me, because I’ve never had this [amount of fan support] on any of my movies, and I feel like I’m one of them,” she said. “I feel like we share the exact same passion for this thing. It feels weird to be at the head of it, but it’s cool, I’ll roll with it.” Earlier in the night, MTV News chatted with “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer , who was glad that she wasn’t in Stewart’s shoes. “I’m so not used to this,” Meyer admitted when asked about the size and scope of the “Eclipse” premiere. “I only do this kind of thing once a year. The rest of the time, I am totally incognito. It’s nice to be the author, let me tell you. It’s so much easier than being the actor!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . ‘Eclipse’ Stars Thank Twilighters For ‘Beyond Insane’ L.A. Premiere

‘This energy is always undeniable,’ Kristen Stewart tells MTV News on the black carpet. By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner Photo: Frazer Harrison/ Getty Images It’s not uncommon for fans of major franchises to devote several hours, days and weeks to the stories they hold so dear, but there’s something almost indescribable about the devotion of the “Twilight” fanbase — a devotion that was on full display Thursday night (June 24) at the world premiere of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “This is beyond insane. It’s, like, ludicrous madness. You can’t describe something like this,” actor Justin Chon, who plays Eric in the “Twilight” series, told MTV News on the black carpet of the “Eclipse” premiere. “These are some of the most dedicated fans that you’ll find on planet Earth.” Sarah Clarke, who plays Bella’s mother Renee Dwyer in the “Twilight” films, echoed Chon’s sentiment: “You never get used to this. I think there’s an Elvis quality, you know?” Clarke pointed out that many of the fans in attendance had been camping outside the theater for almost a week just to make sure they were able to see all their favorite stars. To thank these fans, Peter Facinelli and some of his castmates paid a visit to the dedicated “Twilight” supporters earlier in the week. “A couple of us came down and signed some autographs for them, because they’ve been camping out for five days and we wanted to make sure the wait was worth it,” Facinelli said. “It’s humbling to have this much fan support. I definitely appreciate it, and I know that the cast does. We don’t take it for granted. This whole franchise has been successful because of those fans.” In addition to the numerous fans and “Twilight” castmembers themselves, many other notable Hollywood personalities and surprising celebs came out for the “Eclipse” premiere. Athletes like Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez and L.A. Lakers newcomer Ron Artest were two of the more unexpected celebrities in attendance, with Artest throwing his support behind Team Jacob and the rest of the wolf pack. Actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, in contrast, declared her own status as a proud member of the Team Edward faithful. “I tried to meet [Robert Pattinson] last year, and I waited on line for an hour and a half to meet him, and just as I got to the front, he left,” Hewitt recalled of a previous opportunity to meet the hunky Edward Cullen in person. “I was so sad. But he didn’t mean it — he’s Edward!” Although she fully supports the sexy vampire, Hewitt said she has difficulty relating to Bella’s romantic dilemma. “[My love life] sometimes feels more complicated [than hers],” she said. “Nobody ever just says, ‘Can I bite you?’ And if they did, I’d be like, ‘Yes!’ And we could just move on with our lives, and it would be amazing!” One of the most anticipated personalities attending the “Eclipse” premiere was none other than “Twilight” author and mastermind Stephenie Meyer herself. “I’m so not used to this,” Meyer admitted when asked about the size and scope of the “Eclipse” premiere. “I only do this kind of thing once a year. The rest of the time, I am totally incognito. It’s nice to be the author, let me tell you. It’s so much easier than being the actor!” There’s no question that Meyer was able to navigate through the crowd with more anonymity than the film’s three leading actors, as Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart couldn’t travel from point A to point B without cheers and applause following them every step of the way. “This energy is always undeniable,” Stewart said of the crowd’s unbridled enthusiasm. “I feel like I’m one of them. I feel like we share the exact same passion for this thing, and it feels a little weird to be at the head of it, but it’s cool.” Lautner said that when he first stepped onto the red carpet, there was only one sensation going through his mind: amazement. “It’s absolutely incredible and so exciting,” he said. “It’s a little bit of pressure, because you definitely want to live up to their expectations, but at the same time, we luckily have the most supportive fans in the world. Sometimes, this is just like extra comfort.” “Anybody who says they’re tired of this is completely crazy,” Pattinson agreed with his co-star and onscreen romantic rival. “If I ever said that [I’m tired of this], someone just has to remind me of what I was doing before: sitting around doing nothing!” Check out everything we’ve got on “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.” For young Hollywood news, fashion and “Twilight” updates around the clock, visit HollywoodCrush.MTV.com . Johnny Weir Was ‘Awkward, Skinny,’ On ‘When I Was 17’

He was a World Junior Figure Skating champion, but Weir was no prom king. By MTV News staff Johnny Weir Photo: MTV News Although the two are bitter rivals these days, Johnny Weir shared something in common with fellow Olympic figure skater Evan Lysacek , who revealed his double life as a teen on a recent episode of “When I Was 17.” (“I was traveling all around the world to compete,” Lysacek revealed.) It turns out Weir was also racking up frequent flier miles as the young skater crisscrossed the globe to compete. But while Weir might have been on royalty on the rink, he was no prom king in high school. “I was the awkward, skinny, smart, driven kid,” Weir says on Saturday’s episode of “WIW17.” “I was an honor roll student. I spoke fluent French. I was a bit antisocial. I can’t say that I had a really booming social life.” Coming back to school after being on the road often presented Weir with some serious culture shock, he admitted. “I was traveling a lot while I was still attending public high school,” Weir recalled. “So I’d get back from all these beautiful, worldly experiences and then I’d just be the kid that got made fun of because I was a lot smaller than everyone else.” The 17-year-old may have been slight, but he was certainly graceful on the ice, though that wasn’t always apparent. Weir could be a bit less than agile away from the ice. “I won the junior world title, which means I was the best in the entire world,” he said. “The first day back when I went for my senior year, I was trying to scoot around a group of ladies and they were all a bit bigger ladies, and one of them swung around with their book bag — knocked me flat on my ass.” “When I Was 17” — this week featuring Jackson Rathbone, Keri Hilson and Johnny Weir — airs Saturday at 11 a.m. on MTV. By Jocelyn Vena Justin Bieber (file) Photo: George Pimentel/ WireImage HARTFORD, Connecticut — On Wednesday night, swarms of teenage girls took over the XL Center in Hartford to check out Justin Bieber as he kicked off his first headlining tour , in support of his album My World 2.0. During the show, Bieber dazzled the crowd with fan favorites like “Baby,” “Somebody to Love and “One Time,” but it seems the moment Bieber fans loved most was when he flew over the audience in a heart-shaped cage. “I thought it was really cool when he came out in the heart,” Kiera told MTV News as she was leaving the show. “It was, and he was, in the audience. That was pretty cool.” Devin added, “I liked when he flew around in that heart thing.” The chance to get so close to their idol proved to be a highlight of the night. With most of the glowing reviews from Bieber fans running the gamut from “great” to “amazing” to “loved it,” even his older fans, like girls the audience’s apparent median age of 14, caught Bieber Fever. Megan confessed, “I know I’m not supposed to be in love with someone that young, but I am.” Kristen added, “Well tonight’s show was really fun, and seeing Justin Bieber in real person and [hearing him sing] was amazing.” Erin admitted that Bieber’s family-friendly antics made the show even more enjoyable. “I thought it was really fun and it was really great for kids,” she said. “I really enjoyed it. I kind of came in [like], OK, I’m not gonna enjoy it.’ But I really had a lot of fun. It was a fun concert.” Bieber later tweeted that he really owed his successful first show to his fans. “When u have the support of the greatest fans in the world. U just end up smiling. Thanks,” he wrote. “2nite was just…well…i was scared. Didn’t want to let anyone down but the energy and the fans were incredible. Cant wait to do this again!” Related Photos Justin Bieber Takes Over The Bodies Of Other Teen Idols Related Artists Justin Bieber

Busta Rhymes: Dream Team Is About ‘Being Bigger Than Life’

‘We haven’t given that to the fans in a long time,’ Bus says of Diddy-led supergroup that includes Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Fabolous. By Shaheem Reid Busta Rhymes Photo: MTV News Busta Rhymes says the formation of the collection of artists known as “The Dream Team” is a dream come true for fans. “It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to see artists of this magnitude come together and rock with each other as a unified front,” Busta explained on Saturday backstage at the Birthday Bash 15 concert held at Atlanta’s Philips Arena. “For one reason or another, there’s more beef than it is unity. So it’s a great thing that dudes of this caliber, just artists in general, can come together and rock and support each other’s movement. The Dream Team is pretty much that: We’re here to support each other’s movement.” When Busta does his roll call of the squad formerly known as “The Supreme Team,” he name-checks Rick Ross, Nicki Minaj, Fabolous, Red Caf

Jesus will return by 2050, say 40% of Americans

Americans are largely optimistic about the future, according to the poll from the Pew Research Center For The People and The Press/Smithsonian Magazine. By mid century, 71 per cent believe cancer will be cured, 66 per cent say artificial limbs will work better than real ones and 81 per cent believe computers will be able to converse like humans. But Americans are also braced for a major energy crisis and a warming planet, according to the survey. More than half, or 58 per cent, fear another world war in the next 40 years and 53 per cent expect a terrorist attack against the United States using a nuclear weapon. The poll also shows a sharp dip in overall optimism from 1999, when 81 per cent said they were optimistic about life for themselves and their families. The current poll found just 64 per cent were. Sixty-one percent said they were optimistic about the future of the United States, compared to 70 percent in 1999. And 56 percent predicted the US economy would be stronger in 40 years, compared to 64 percent of those polled in 1999. The results were compiled from telephone and online interviews with 1,546 adults in April. The margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points, according to Pew. Here are some other findings of the poll: • 71 per cent believe cancer will be cured by 2050. • 81 per cent believe computers will be able to converse like humans. • 68 per cent of those under 30 predict a world war by 2050. • 53 per cent say ordinary people will travel in space • Nearly three-quarters, or 74 per cent, of those polled believe it likely that “most of our energy will come from sources other than coal, oil, and gas”. • Yet 72 per cent believe the world is likely to experience a major worldwide energy crisis by 2050. • 66 per cent say the Earth will definitely or probably get warmer but it breaks down strongly along political lines, with just 48 per cent of Republicans saying so and 83 per cent of Democrats. • 42 per cent say it is likely that scientists will be able to tell what people are thinking by scanning their brains but 55 say this will definitely or probably not happen. • 89 per cent believe a woman will be elected US president by 2050. • 86 per cent say it is at least probable that most Americans will have to work into their 70s before retiring. • 41 per cent say Jesus Christ will return within the next 40 years while 46 per cent say this will definitely or probably not happen. • 63 per cent anticipate the demise of paper money • 61 per cent say almost no one will send letters by 2050. • 31 per cent expect the planet will be struck by an asteroid. added by: cclark_productions

Does the "Utility Only" Cap and Trade Pass Muster?

Photo via the Blind Eye The chances of comprehensive clean energy and climate legislation passing the Senate continue to slip away as the election cycle draws nearer. ‘Moderate’ Dems fear throwing their support behind a climate bill like Kerry and Lieberman’s, since Republicans have had some success falsely labeling the bill a ‘job-killing energy tax” (never mind that the vast majority of Americans support clean energy legislation). So, a number of alternative options are being considered, such as an ‘energy only’ bill, and a ‘utility only’ cap and trade bill — a bi… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Oil Corp Lawyers Claim Offshore Drilling Ban is Destroying an ‘Ecosystem of Business’

The latest image of the oil spill from NASA I have to admit that I’ve been trying to think beyond the ongoing environmental horror-show of the BP oil spill and get past blame and anger with it all. But a new piece in The Guardian brought anger right back to the fore. Apparently lawyers for the oil industry, in a grotesque stretching of words, are claiming that the current ban of deepwater drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is destroying an “ecos… Read the full story on TreeHugger
