Are we closer to having renewable natural gas using solar power, water and CO2? That’s what HyperSolar, a technology company based in Santa Barbara, CA, is hoping to achieve. The company has filed a patent application for clean, renewable gas which it hopes replaces traditional natural has without having to resort to aggressive and dangerous Broadcasting platform : Vimeo Source : EnergyRefuge.com Blog Discovery Date : 15/11/2011 17:47 Number of articles : 2

War for Oil…Obama’s Lust in Afghanistan!

The relationship between fossil fuels and Afghanistan has been written about extensively, just not that much by me. Afghanistan, a landlocked country, has essentially negligible petrochemical resources, but there are vast oil and natural gas fields in Central Asia to the north, notably in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan. Getting those fuels to American, Western European, and even Asian markets requires vast pipelines. http://original.antiwar.com/bock/2009/03/23/afghanistan-all-about-oil/ added by: congoboy

2009 Snapshot of U.S. Energy Use by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

Image: Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Look at How Much Energy is Wasted! The image above (see the full size version in this PDF ) is a snapshot of energy use in the United States in 2009. On the left, the different sources (solar, nuclear, hydro, wind, etc) and how many quads of energy they contribute, and then by following the lines you can see how that energy is used, and how much of it is wasted. NY Senate Tells Frackers To Stop While The State Looks At Water Safety

A fracking tower (photo via flickr) The film ” Gas Land ” has woken people up to the dangers of fracking–the drilling technique that uses millions of gallons of pressurized and chemically treated water to fragment rock to get to natural gas. The New York State Senate obviously has questions about fracking after they voted 48 to 9 last Tuesday to issue a temporary moratorium on the practice. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Burning Tap Water and More: GASLAND Exposes the Natural Gas Industry

Image: Gasland What the frack? In 2008, Josh Fox received a letter from a natural gas company. They were interested in leasing land owned by his family to do natural gas drilling. The offer was for $100,000, but instead of taking the money, Josh decided to do some research on the natural gas industry and ended up making a documentary called GASLAND. It focuses on the impact that modern natural gas extraction, which primarly uses hydraulic fracturing( aka “fracking”), has on communities and the environment. Check out the trailer below, it’s pretty good…. Read the full story on TreeHugger

Natural Gas Use to Double in US in Coming Decades: MIT Report

photo: citylovesyou_ffm via flickr After two years of study, researchers from MIT have forecast natural gas use in the United States doubling in the coming decades, increasing energy market share to 40%. That increase comes largely because natural gas eventually replaces more coal in electricity generation thanks to future carbon emissions reduction policy. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Will Biodegrading Oil And Natural Gas From BP Gusher Expand The Gulf Dead Zone?

Satellite view of the Gulf oil spill as of 12 June 2010 (partial excerpt). Image credit: SkyTruth, via NASA. So far, I have read only speculation about the ‘Dead Zone’ expanding as a result of increased biological oxygen demand (BOD), stemming from oil and natural gas in the Gulf. It is plausible that the Dead Zone size would be increased – assuming phytoplankton productivity is not reduced by oil and gas, which would lead to reduced oxygen uptake as lower volumes… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Scientists Hope BP Oil Spill Offers Clues about Global Warming

Image: The Chronicle of Higher Education While everyone else worries about the toxicity of the oil, the physics of plume dispersion, and the costs to wildlife and workers across the gulf, one crew of scientists see a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The obvious ethical restrictions to releasing large amounts of methane (which contributes 25 times more greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide) into the ocean has complicated study of how seepage of natural gas at the ocean floor contributes to global wa… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Verizon Converts 501 Utility Vans to Compressed Natural Gas

Photo: Ford Is This a Good Idea? Replacing one fossil fuel might seem like a bad idea, and under certain circumstances I would definitely agree that it is, but sometimes you have to take what you can get while waiting for something better to come along. Many companies, like Verizon, have lots of utility vans that are currently powered by gasoline or diesel and that could benefit from a conversion to compressed natural gas (CNG). For more details on the environmental benefits of that, see below…. Read the full story on TreeHugger
