How to Save the Planet – Part 3

Eco-warriors do more than just chase down whaling ships or chain themselves to redwood trees; an equally vicious battle is taking place on Capitol Hill. Lobbyists, protesters and legislators descend on Washington, D.C. to hash out the merits of the controversial American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, which some say is the first step in reversing global warming, while other are convinced it's the death knell for the U.S. economy. This is Part 3 in a four part web series where we follow this controversial bill through the House of Representatives. What does it take to pass climate legislation? What deals need to be cut? What parliamentary tricks have to be pulled? The conclusion will be posted online tomorrow at 3ET/12 PT. added by: JD_Buffalo

B.o.B Has ‘Always’ Been A Fan Of Paramore’s Hayley Williams

‘People who go to my shows are the same people that go to Paramore shows,’ he says of ‘Airplanes’ collaborator. By Steven Roberts Hayley Williams Photo: Christopher Polk/ Getty Images Last week, B.o.B released the single “Airplanes,” featuring Paramore leading lady Hayley Williams. The Atlanta rapper followed that up with “Airplanes (Part II),” this time with Eminem joining Williams in the guest spot . Both tracks are from the MC’s debut album, B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray, due April 27. When MTV News caught up with Williams recently, the Paramore singer sounded psyched to jump on the record . “I was given the track awhile ago while we were on tour,” she told MTV News. “The guys and I all loved it. They told me I was crazy if I passed it up. I liked the part too much anyways. So, of course, I was down.” Williams also revealed that she was a big fan of B.o.B, whom she called a “genius.” B.o.B was just as excited about the collaboration when MTV News met up with him before his packed show at SOB’s last week. “First off, Paramore is the sh–,” B.o.B said. “I’ve always been a Hayley fan, and to work with her, that’s another thing I didn’t think would happen to me as soon as it did.” Although the duo didn’t get in the studio together, B.o.B said he and the Paramore vocalist talked, and she really liked the song’s vibe. While the pairing might seem like an odd one, especially considering Williams has never done any rap features, B.o.B said he’d observed that his fans’ musical tastes are as eclectic as his are. “That’s something that I notice,” he said. “Like, if I do my shows and I go out to the crowd and talk to people, I’ll ask them what type of music they listen to. Everybody listens to everything. People who go to my shows are the same people that go to Paramore shows, are the same people that go to a Lupe [Fiasco] show or a Common show, because it’s all about the music, and it’s all about the energy put behind it.” B.o.B said he was fortunate not only to get to work with Williams, but also many of the artists on his album. More than securing a simple “yes,” schedules were often a key factor. “The timing of everything is real divine. It almost seems like it’s supposed to happen,” he said. “It’s kind of freaky sometimes how my first album — I have so many people on it. And these are people that inspire me tremendously, and just to have them on the album is amazing.” Were you surprised to hear Hayley on a B.o.B track? Who else would you like to hear the MC with? Alicia Keys’ #MusicMonday Pick: Sade’s ‘Soldier Of Love’

‘I’m loving that Sade is back,’ Keys says, adding that MGMT are also on her playlist. By Kyle Anderson Alicia Keys Photo: MTV News One of the things that makes Alicia Keys a particularly impressive artist is her ability to synthesize dozens of influences into a coherent whole that is entirely her own. On her latest album, The Element of Freedom, there’s a little bit of Prince, a taste of Roberta Flack, a hint of Joni Mitchell and a healthy dose of Mary J. Blige. So, it’s no wonder that Keys’ #MusicMonday pick comes from the latest album from another titan in modern R&B. “I’m loving that Sade is back ,” Keys recently told MTV News. “I love ‘Soldier of Love.’ I can’t help it.” Sade’s latest single comes from the recently released album of the same name — her first in a decade. But even though she took 10 years off, Keys says Sade is still just as powerful and affecting as she always has been. “There’s just something about her voice and her energy that speaks to me,” she says. Keys told MTV News that she’s also grooving along to new music from MGMT , who just released their sophomore album, Congratulations. Keys’ playlist will get plenty of mileage over the next few months, as she is currently on the road (she’ll be at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday). Then she’ll have one of her most high-profile gigs coming up in June, when she helps kick off the FIFA World Cup — the world’s largest soccer tournament — in Johannesburg, South Africa on June 10. Trey Songz Calls Out R. Kelly (Again) In Vibe Cover Story

‘R. Kelly took Aaron Hall’s whole style,’ Songz says after his sound is compared to Kelly’s. By Jayson Rodriguez Trey Songz Photo: Stephen Lovekin/ Getty Images Trey Songz might have denied that there’s a beef between him and R. Kelly — whom he’s regularly criticized in song and interviews — but that doesn’t mean they share a friendly relationship. In the upcoming April/May issue of Vibe, Songz again talks about Kelly, accusing him of jacking R&B singer/songwriter Aaron Hall’s style. The “Say Aah” singer admits he’s done the same with Kelly’s style, injecting some of the embattled star’s subtleties into his music. The result, Songz’s Ready album, is his most successful project to date. “People say, ‘Well, I hear a lot of R. Kelly in your music.’ So what?” Songz told the magazine, which hits newsstands April 13 “R. Kelly took Aaron Hall’s whole style. Two albums straight. … You can say what you want about me.” The Virginia native lashed out against Kelly on a mixtape for the singer’s use of Auto-Tune, claiming he was chasing trends instead of paving the way. The pair have been tossing barbs at each other since an upstart Songz remixed Kelly’s “Trapped in the Closet” single before the singer decided to make a full-scale series of “Closet” songs. In Trey Songz’s version, he responded as the man in the closet hiding from what was taking place between Kelly and his wife. Kelly then released part two, and in his version, the man in the closet reveals himself to be gay. Since then, Songz has been vocal with his disdain for Kelly. Kelly struck back in an interview, saying the younger singer should “be very careful.” In the meantime, Trey Songz is flourishing as a part of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour. He’s the opener and also sings during Jay’s set. In December, he told MTV News that during the trip, he, Jay-Z and Young Jeezy are working on music together. “It’s definitely all in the talks,” he said. “It’s the Mob Squad. Me, Jay, Jeezy, we plan on working together while we on this tour, because the energy we have together when we get around each other is amazing. And like I said, all aspects like that on a record is amazing. Maybe while we out on the road we get it done.” What do think about Trey Songz’s comments? Whose side are you on: Trey’s or R. Kelly’s? Perez Hilton’s SXSW Party Features Crowd-Pleasing Snoop Dogg, Hole Sets

Buzz acts Alphabeat, Marina and the Diamonds, VV Brown also perform at Perez’ One Night in Austin show. By James Montgomery Snoop Dogg (file) Photo: Michael Bezjian/WireImage AUSTIN, Texas — It wasn’t exactly arctic cold, but it was close. At least by South by Southwest standards. Usually a haven for hipsters in their skin-baring finest, on Saturday, SXSW got downright chilly, with temperatures dipping into the 40s and winds howling in from the Texas plains. It didn’t really dampen spirits all that much, but it was certainly weird to see Sixth Street transformed into a parka parade. Yet, the weather was a rather apt metaphor for the closing night of SXSW 2010, because it just seemed unnatural (even though, you know, it was nature and all). And the same could be said about Saturday night’s two biggest events: a tribute concert for the late Alex Chilton , whose death on Wednesday sent a pall through a festival primarily known for good times, and Perez Hilton’s third-annual One Night in Austin party, which, with its VIP lists, sponsored lounges and DayGlo sensibilities was basically the polar opposite of everything SXSW stood for once upon a time. The Chilton tribute took place at gritty Austin blues hall Antone’s, and while that was winding down, Perez Hilton’s annual soiree was just beginning to heat up. Say what you will about the gossip maven (and there’s definitely plenty to say), over the past two years, his SXSW shindig has spotlighted some artists that have gone on to great success — Katy Perry springs to mind — and he definitely knows how to throw a party. The 2010 version was held in a sprawling warehouse something-or-other called the Whitley and was filled with all of the things that make SXSW purists cringe: a booming sound system, dueling DJs, branded everything (cupcakes, caffeinated beverages, cocktails) and plenty of neon. The bill managed to split the difference, heavy on buzzed-about acts on the undercard — Alphabeat, Marina and the Diamonds, VV Brown — yet also fronted with big names like Snoop Dogg and Hole. The crowd, which began lining up outside the Whitley some five hours before the party kicked off, was mostly into the big acts, Snoop in particular. The rapper took the stage after midnight (and after Hilton had introduced him as “somebody you usually don’t see at South by Southwest”) and went buck wild, feeding off the energy and playing nothing but the hits … though, he probably could’ve worn something other than an Oklahoma City Thunder jersey. So, we got “The Next Episode,” “Gin and Juice,” “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “What’s My Name?” It was prime-time, silly-and-stoned Snoop (which probably explained his cover of House of Pain’s “Jump Around”), which is exactly what everyone in attendance wanted. It was a solid choice by Mr. Hilton. The wild card was, of course, Hole. After all, their shows on Friday were, to put it charitably, a little rough. And you cannot predict what Courtney Love will do when she steps onstage. But on this night, she was on her best behavior, cutting out the snotty banter and just playing songs people know (“Miss World,” “Pretty on the Inside,” even new single “Skinny Little Bitch”). Much like the wintery winds howling outside, it seemed downright unnatural. She even opened with a tribute to Chilton, playing Big Star’s “Thirteen” while partygoers looked on in befuddlement. And yet, that too was strangely fitting, especially given the circumstances and the surroundings. Global warming, tribute shows, Perez Hilton … it’s all the same, really. Especially at SXSW.
