Move Over Priest: Celebrity Preacher Eddie Long Faces Third Sex Abuse Claim

I spoke, personally, to a friend here in Atlanta that used to attend New Birth Missionary Baptist Church and grew up with Eddie Long in Baltimore, Maryland. He told that the inner circle of Long's entourage has always known about his passion and desire for young boys. One of the accusers was involved in a break in at the church last year. One of the things stolen was the Bishop's Iphone. The young man knew that the phone was the smoking gun because of the incriminating numbers and messages it carried. New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, with it's 30,000 members, has the largest African American congregation in the southeast region of the United States. I'm just not surprised. Don't ask me why, I'm just not. ___________________________________________________________ (Sept. 22) — A third lawsuit has been filed accusing Bishop Eddie Long of coercing young men in his Atlanta megachurch into having sex in exchange for cash and cars. The suit was filed today in DeKalb County Superior Court, in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Earlier today, a spokesman for the pastor said the two other young men who have filed lawsuits against Long are out to stake their claim on his fortune and called the allegations baseless. The allegations against the leader of a 25,000-plus-member church are particularly explosive because of Long's outspoken views on homosexuality. The Southern Poverty Law Center calls the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church leader “one of the most virulently homophobic black leaders in the religiously based anti-gay movement” and noted that he has referred to homosexuality and lesbianism as “spiritual abortions.” In the lawsuit filed Tuesday in DeKalb County, Ga., the two men accuse Long of exploiting his influence to coerce the then-teenagers into sexual relationships with him for years. Johnny Nunez, Wire Image Two men have filed a lawsuit alleging Bishop Eddie Long, here in 2007, coerced them into sexual relationships when they were teenagers. The lawsuit says Long, 57, has a long pattern of “singling out a select group of young male church members” and using his influence to engage in “sexual acts and relationships for his own personal sexual gratification.” The suit says the pastor — leader of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church in the Atlanta suburb of Lithonia — referred to the teenagers as “spiritual sons” and instructed them to follow their “master.” In exchange, they claim, Long introduced them to celebrities like film director Tyler Perry, according to The New York Times. Art Franklin told CNN the claims are nothing more than “a case of retaliation and a shakedown for money by men with some serious credibility issues” and are “definitely without merit.” Franklin noted that one of the accusers was arrested earlier this year and charged with breaking into the church's offices and stealing an iPad and an iPhone. The attorney for the men, Brenda Joy Bernstein, says the June 23 break-in was committed out of anger, when one of the plaintiffs discovered that Long had similar relationships with other young men in the congregation. “He lashed out,” Bernstein told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But if it weren't for that act, we wouldn't know about this. He talked to his friends and learned Long had other 'spiritual sons.'” But not all of the church's members see it that way. Samuel Midgette, 40, said he doesn't believe the allegations, in part because of often Long speaks about his wife in glowing terms. “A man who talks about his wife as much as he do…I can't see it. Unless I'm blind,” Midgette told AOL News today in a phone interview. He said the men making the claims are likely after Long's money. “People don't believe this,” he said. “I think this is all about money.” The lawsuit charges that the abuse began when one of the men was 16. According to the suit, Long put the teenager on the church's payroll, bought him a Chevy Malibu and took him on trips to Turks and Caicos, New York and New Zealand. In New Zealand, Long “regularly engaged in sexual touching and sexual acts” with the teenager, the lawsuit says. Long “categorically denies the allegations,” his attorney, Craig Gillen, told The Associated Press. “We find it unfortunate that these two young men would take this course of action.” Gillen did not immediately return a call to AOL News. Bernstein says church officials knew about the abuse and failed to stop it. “They would do everything to protect the most powerful church in the Southeast,” she told the Times. Long's church hosts a program titled “Out of the Wilderness” that claims to help cure its participants of homosexuality. In 2006, when the family of Martin Luther King Jr. chose New Birth Missionary Baptist Church as the location for Coretta Scott King's funeral, civil rights leader Julian Bond refused to attend. Bond said King's widow supported gay rights and never would have wanted to be in the presence of Long. “I knew her attitude toward gay and lesbian rights. And I just couldn't imagine that she'd want to be in that church with a minister who was a raving homophobe,” Bond told told AOL's Black Voices in 2006. “And I couldn't see myself in my church either.” added by: keithponder

CBS ‘Early Show’: Pope’s Visit to UK Source of ‘Criticism’ and ‘Controversy’

At the top of Thursday’s CBS Early Show, fill-in co-host Erica Hill teased a report on Pope Benedict’s visit to Scotland: “…it’s a rather controversial visit for a number of reasons.” Later, correspondent Richard Roth proclaimed the state visit “has more pomp and potentially more problems” and would “bound to be shadowed by controversy along with ceremony.” Roth went on to tout a gaffe made by a Papal aide prior to the trip and noted how the Pope “courts criticism on a range of issues , from the visit’s cost – figured at around $20 million – to the cover-up of sex abuse among Catholic clergyman.” He also highlighted predictions of low turnouts at Papal events during the visit: “[Benedict’s] welcome will be measured, in part, by the size of his crowds. Some Church officials this morning were already lowering expectations, saying seats were still unsold for several outdoor events.” In fact, about 125,00 people lined the streets of Edinburgh to see the Pope’s motorcade, with 65,000 attending a later outdoor mass. The only positive comment about the Papal visit was a sound bite of Queen Elizabeth welcoming the Pontiff: “On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, I wish you a most fruitful and memorable visit.” Roth concluded his report this way: “This is a country with a strong anti-clerical streak and a critical press. But, one leading paper’s comment here that Benedict’s ‘entering the lion’s den,’ may also reflect a flare for dramatic overstatement.” The Early Show has a history of depicting the Pope and the Catholic Church as controversial. On March 19 , correspondent Allen Pizzey pronounced that allegations of child sexual abuse within the Church amounted to “a scandal that’s threatening to become a plague of biblical proportions.” Ahead of Pope Benedict’s first visit to the United States in April of 2008 , co-host Harry Smith claimed that Americans were “unsure and fearful” of the new Pontiff because of his commitment to traditional Catholic values. Here is a full transcript of Roth’s September 16 report: 7:01AM ET TEASE: ERICA HILL: We’re going to take a look, too, coming up in the broadcast, at the Pope’s visit to the UK, arriving there today. And really it’s a rather controversial visit for a number of reasons. But he’s also been speaking out more about the alleged sex abuse within the Catholic Church, really making some of his most pointed comments yet, saying the Church failed to act decisively or quickly enough to deal with priests who raped and molest children. And that, understandably, getting attention. 7:02AM ET SEGMENT: JEFF GLOR: We begin with the Pope’s visit. Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Scotland this morning. The first ever state visit by a pope to the UK. CBS News correspondent Richard Roth is in London this morning with more on that. Richard, good morning. RICHARD ROTH: Good morning, Jeff. Well, the last Papal trip here, by John Paul 28 years ago, was a pastoral visit. As an official state affair, Benedict’s trip has more pomp and potentially more problems. [ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Papal Pilgrimage; First State Visit to UK By A Pope] Greeted by the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, and by an honor guard of the royal regiment of Scotland, Pope Benedict began a state visit that was bound to be shadowed by controversy along with ceremony. One Papal aide, a German cardinal, had to drop off the entourage, after likening Britain to a third world country, referring to its ethnic mix. The Vatican said the Cardinal had suddenly gotten sick. Benedict’s trip to Britain, which broke with the Vatican almost 500 years ago, courts criticism on a range of issues, from the visit’s cost – figured at around $20 million – to the cover-up of sex abuse among Catholic clergyman. Before arriving at the Queen Elizabeth’s Scottish palace, the Pope told Vatican reporters the scandal had been a shock to him, ‘a perversion in the priestly ministry,’ he called it. QUEEN ELIZABETH: On behalf of the people of the United Kingdom, I wish you a most fruitful and memorable visit. ROTH: The Queen is Benedict’s official host here, but his welcome will be measured, in part, by the size of his crowds. Some Church officials this morning were already lowering expectations, saying seats were still unsold for several outdoor events. This is a country with a strong anti-clerical streak and a critical press. But, one leading paper’s comment here that Benedict’s ‘entering the lion’s den,’ may also reflect a flare for dramatic overstatement. Jeff. GLOR: Alright, Richard Roth in London this morning. Richard, thank you.

Lady Gaga Backstage At The VMAs: The Realest Girl, The Meatiest Dress

Bigger Than the Sound captures a few moments when the cameras weren’t rolling. By James Montgomery Lady Gaga Photo: Mark Ralston/ Getty Images On Sunday night at the Video Music Awards , Lady Gaga won everything besides Best Contemporary World Music Album, but you probably couldn’t tell by the way she acted. Or at least I couldn’t. After all, I was standing roughly 3 feet from her as she descended from the stage, Video of the Year Moonman in one hand, short-loin inspired clutch in the other. And at that moment, she didn’t seem like the biggest pop icon on the planet, a woman who genuinely inspires millions and appears determined to speak for the voiceless and use her status to elicit actual social change . Instead, she seemed like a very demure, very humble human being. This may have had something to do with the fact that she had just accepted an award from Cher (which can definitely be a disorienting experience), or because she had just won her eighth Moonman of the night, but it definitely struck me as odd. After all, if you take everything you know or have read about her, combine it with her videos, fashion sense and over-the-top, decidedly feisty live performances, you are left with a picture that is less human and more, well, deity. Gaga does not appear to be human — more like a pneumatic lion tamer with a penchant for creative haberdashery, or a fire-breathing neo-Shiva in sunglasses — which is sort of the point, I suppose. But, as I learned on VMA night, it’s not actually the truth. I don’t know why it took me so long to realize this. After all, I have interviewed her and used this very space earlier this year to examine her transformation from otherworldly star to a normal girl . But there was something about watching her fight back tears at the VMAs — something she continued to do backstage, just in case you were wondering — that made it click for me. I watched as she hugged Cher, whispered something to her and then made the trek down to her dressing room, still shaking slightly, still saying “thank you” to the various stagehands and show producers who shouted their congratulations as she passed. I followed her and her entourage out of the theater, trying to keep my eyes on her tiny shoulders as she was surrounded by a ring of beefy security guards. This is much tougher to do than you would imagine; after all, Gaga is very small in person, practically delicate. She does not walk as much as she tiptoes, mostly because of the McQueen armadillo heels she wears, but also because you get the sense that the slightest breeze would knock her over. There is a fine, almost-porcelain quality to her. You want to put her on a glass shelf. You want to run a feather duster over her. There are not many deities you can say this about. Her entourage headed downstairs, and again, I followed. They made their way into the hallway beneath the stage, a carpeted pathway lined with dressing rooms. Most of the stars heard her coming and popped their heads out to catch a glimpse of her. Yes, she has that kind of clout. I watched from a wall as her team of stylists emerged from her dressing room and started clapping and cheering, and only then did I notice that Gaga was smiling. This was the real her, the person that only her closest friends — and, I suppose, nosy reporters — get to see. The Gaga that only comes out when the camera’s aren’t around (which is something, like, three hours of each day). There were still tears in her eyes, though now she wasn’t crying; she was laughing, making a kind of gulping sound. It was exactly the kind of thing you or I would do in a situation like this, when we have just triumphed and are now getting to share that moment with our friends. And I watched as she disappeared into her room, followed by her inner circle. The door closed, and her security guards fell into place, but you could definitely hear the celebratory whoop that happened immediately afterward. It was certainly genuine. After all, Gaga cares about winning awards, though I suspect it has more to do with the fact that she gets to share the victory with her friends. That’s the kind of person I’m guessing she is. I don’t know how long she stayed in there, because I was already making my way down to the other end of the hallway, where Kanye West was having an impromptu, celeb-filled party in his dressing room. It stopped traffic. Usher popped in. Rihanna did too. There were ballerinas involved. The contrast between the two rooms was noteworthy. Because even when the lights aren’t on, Kanye still carries himself like a deity. It’s part of his mystique. Gaga is different. She doesn’t need a mystique; being human seems to be enough for her. And, yes, I realize I’m making tremendous assumptions based on a few unguarded moments, but you learn a lot from someone when they know the cameras aren’t rolling, when it’s just them, their closest confidants and maybe a Moonman or two. For a minute, I got to see the real Lady Gaga, and it was all I needed. She cries and laughs and even gulps on occasion. She is humble and genuine. She is human, after all, even when she’s wearing a meat dress. You learn something new every day. Share your thoughts on Gaga’s victorious VMA night in the comments below. Chelsea Handler’s Best VMA Moments

Host chases Justin Bieber, mocks Lady Gaga, gets visit from Lindsay Lohan By Kara Warner Chelsea Handler hosting the 2010 MTV VMAs Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images From the self-deprecating teaser promos leading up to the show to her haphazard Lady Gaga impersonation to countless brazen one-liners and a skit involving spontaneous impregnation courtesy of a quick dip in the “Jersey Shore” hot tub, Chelsea Handler nailed her first-time VMA-hosting gig. The sassy and outspoken E! talk-show host kicked things off with a pre-taped video, in which she was repeatedly smacked on the rear at random, as well as given a brutal coaching session from Lindsay Lohan. Here’s a rundown of our fave Chelsea Handler VMA moments: Her entrance/monologue Handler dropped down to the stage amidst a group of dancers, wearing a house on her head and a glittery outfit. Once in place to deliver her opening remarks, she told the crowd: “My plan was to stay sober the entire show, but, in an interesting twist, I am as high as a kite. That’s the last time I do a prayer circle with Snoop Dogg.” Speaking about the fact that the last time a woman hosted the show was Roseanne Barr in 1994, Handler poked fun at some of the nominees’ activities that particular year. “Justin Timberlake was in the Mickey Mouse Club pretending he wasn’t having sex with Britney Spears,” Handler joked. “‘The Situation’ was just a classy way to refer to a teenage pregnancy. And Justin Bieber’s mom had just given birth to her 401k plan.” The Best New Artist 2010 Meet and Greet sketches In another pre-taped video segment, Handler hilariously introduced herself to the Best New Artist nominees, including Ke$ha and Justin Bieber. Handler admitted a bit of a crush on the “Tik Tok” singer, and made the clip with Bieber memorable by accusing the teen star of wearing a wig and chasing him down trying to grab it. Hot tub party with the “Jersey Shore” cast Handler showed she had no problem getting wet and wild. When The Situation hollered out to Handler from their famous hot tub and asked her to join in the fun, she actually walked over and climbed into the tub with JWoww, Snooki and Pauly D. Cut to commercial. When the show came back, Handler complained about feeling disgusting, and when she stood up to get out of the tub, had been spontaneously impregnated. Drake, Rihanna Congratulate Kanye West Backstage At VMAs

‘Shout out to the douche bags,’ host Chelsea Handler is overheard singing outside her dressing room after Kanye’s performance. By Jayson Rodriguez Kanye West performs during the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards Photo: Kevin Winter/Getty Images Redemption seems certain for Kanye West after he premiered a new song during the closing set at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards . The host of the evening certainly thought so: She was singing the tune when MTV News spotted her on the way back to her dressing room. “Shout out to the douche bags,” Chelsea Handler sang while walking down the stairs from the backstage area. “I need that as a mix.” West received a loud ovation from the various music industry insiders, MTV staffers and photographers gathered backstage when he and his entourage headed back to the area post-performance. Aziz Ansari — this year’s MTV Movie Awards host — introduced the performance and sought out ‘Ye afterward to offer praise. The Clipse’s Pusha T, is featured on the track and joined West onstage; he jubilant backstage, as well. “I’m happy,” Steve Victor, a member of Pusha T’s management team beamed to MTV News. Rihanna arrived and congratulated West backstage before making a beeline for the exit. There Already Was A Ground-Zero Mosque — On The 17th Floor Of The World Trade Center

It turns out there was a Muslim prayer room on the 17th floor of the south tower of the World Trade Center, where Americans and other traveling Muslims prayed every day. On September 11th, 2001, when a handful of terrorists flew planes into the towers, some of the folks who used the room evacuated in time. Others probably didn't. In other words, there already was a “ground zero mosque”–used by Muslim Americans who were murdered just like everyone else. So isn't it time we stopped framing this discussion as “us versus them”? Samuel Freedman has more on the prayer room at the NYT > ( http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/11/nyregion/11religion.html?hp ) added by: toyotabedzrock
