New Moore Island Gone at Bay of Bengal

The countries Bangladesh and India have been fighting for thirty years over the ownership New Moore Island which lies at the heart of the Bay of Bengal. This very long debate was ceased by New Moore Island being swallowed by the Bay of Bengal due to the alarming rate of rising water levels due to Global Warming. According to the latest news, no more New Moore Island exists and it is now at the heart of the Bay of Bengal deep under it. In a report, Professor Hazra said that the New Moore Island has entirely sunk which was confirmed by sea patrons and satellite images from the sea. She also said that, “What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking has been resolved by global warming.” Global Warming has really taken its toll as the sea levels at the Bay of Bengal have been increasing for about 3 millimeters annually until 2000 and a very alarming 5 millimeters per year from then on to present. According to reports, not only the New Moore Island or South Talpatti Island banished but also around ten smaller islands surrounding it are in danger of being swallowed by the waters of the Bay of Bengal. Bottle-Boat Plastiki Sets Sail Across Pacific

The bottle-boat named Plastiki has already set sail into the Pacific. It is 60-foot (20m) catamaran made out of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and other recycled PET plastic and waste products. They will sail from San Francisco to Sydney to spread awareness about pollution in the world’s oceans. David De Rothschild an environmentalist and expedition leader together with Co-skipper David Thompson, expedition diver Olav Heyerdahl, filmmakers Max Jourdan and Vern Moen will sail for 3 months passing the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The expedition has an aim to promote awareness of the amount of garbage disposed in our ocean and how it has greatly affect our environment as evidenced by current sea level rise, ocean acidification and marine pollution. A river of sh*t: World Water Day

Today is World Water Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness around water issues – scarcity, access and quality. It’s probably the one day each year we all really stop to think about how to better manage this precious resource.

All Fish Tested from U.S. Streams Found Contaminated with Mercury

In a new study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), every single fish tested from 291 freshwater streams across the United States was found to be contaminated with mercury. “This study shows just how widespread mercury pollution has become in our air, watersheds and many of our fish in freshwater streams,” said Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that builds up in the food chain at ever higher concentrations in predators such as large fish and humans. It is especially damaging to the developing nervous systems of fetuses and children, but can have severe effects on adults, as well. The pollutant enters the environment almost wholly as atmospheric emissions from industrial processes, primarily the burning of coal for electricity. It then spreads across the plant and settles back to the surface, eventually concentrating in rivers, lakes and oceans, where it enters the aquatic food chain. The number one cause of human mercury poisoning in the United States is the consumption of fish and shellfish. Researchers tested the water, sediment and fish of the 291 streams between 1998 and 2005. Fish tested were mostly larger species near the top of the food chain, such as largemouth bass. added by: jefftego

Cap and Trade no more? What does it mean that ConocoPhillips, BP and Caterpillar pulled out of lobby group?

Before we explore any deep thoughts about why ConocoPhillips, BP and Caterpillar the U.S. Climate Action Partnership (USCAP) (a coalition of environmental organizations and leading corporations pushing for a cap-and-trade bill to curb emissions of carbon dioxide) we might as well drill down to the basics and remind ourselves about what is Cap and Trade. Amy Goodman explains it as the issue that splits the environmental movement in half. While some say it is a way to tax polluters, generate accountability, and raise money for new technologies, other argue that it gives free permits to big polluters, fake offsets and distraction from what’s really required to tackle the climate crisis. If you want Annie Leonard's explainer video on Cap and Trade, look no further. So here is the break down: The Washington Post reports the reason as: The oil giants also want to do more to promote natural gas, which has become more abundant because of recent developments in the exploitation of shale gas and emits half as much greenhouse gas as coal does. The legislation adopted by the House included benefits for coal producers and coal-fired power plants in an effort to secure the votes of key lawmakers. Many natural gas producers think that more should be done for them. In other words, these companies are turning towards an industry that is under regulated and somehow perceived as “natural” or “environmentally friendly”. However, ask the residents who live near this form of mining natural resources about the state of cancer rates, houses blowing up, and lighting their water on fire, and you will be initiated into the world of Fracking. BP's statement alludes to that they are pulling out in part because of their deep care for the well being of their customers: BP spokesman Ronnie Chappell said, “We think the organization has accomplished what it was intended to do. It has established a broad, principle-based framework for climate-change legislation. With the completion of that blueprint, that work was done.” “We don't think legislation pending in the House or Senate conforms with the blueprint,” he added. “A disproportionate share of the cost burden falls on the transportation sector and consumers. As a result, we're going to miss out on the most cost-effective measures, and misallocation of resources could occur.” ConocaPhilips provided the following insight in their press release: “House climate legislation and Senate proposals to date have disadvantaged the transportation sector and its consumers, left domestic refineries unfairly penalized versus international competition, and ignored the critical role that natural gas can play in reducing GHG emissions,” [CEO Jim] Mulva continued. “We believe greater attention and resources need to be dedicated to reversing these missed opportunities, and our actions today are part of that effort. Addressing these issues will save thousands of American jobs, as well as create new ones.” Kate Kenny, a Caterpillar spokeswoman, said the company wants to focus on carbon capture and storage projects, such as FutureGen, an Illinois plant that is partly financed by the federal government. “We have decided to direct our resources toward the commercialization of technologies that will promote and provide sustainable development and reduce carbon emissions,” she said in an e-mail. After reading several articles on BP's website, major news sources, and conservative energy blogs, I've come to the conclusion that if you aren't on the inside track of this issue you are out of luck if you actually want to understand this manuver. So I asked one of my favorite bloggers on energy, David Roberts of Grist, to put this into context and explain what it isn't being said in the press releases.

Audi’s anti environment SuperBowl ad: Thanks for nothing.

And so the green movement is being marketed to men. Or so Audi pretends in their Superbowl ad for their TDI Diesel (which can be converted to a biodiesel if you have a station in your home town). Ya know, I like that Audi makes TDI’s. I do. I hate this ad. While on the surface it almost looks like a PSA that educates about the basic environmental practices in re: to plastics, battery recycling, composting, styrofoam and water usage; after viewing it I walked away with the odd association of feeling constricted and constrained by doing all of those small daily practices for the environment. What’s up with police state over monitoring my every move? (At least I would have gotten a laugh if they had broken in on a sex seen for some un-green sex practices…that’s SuperBowl Sunday appropriate, no?) Frankly, I walked away with an anti-green feeling and irritation towards anyone between me and my ability to do the basic little things I enjoy in life (like eating, and grocery shopping, and hot-tubbing). Look Audi, go ahead and make your cars, but don’t go and F up all the work that so many environmental organizations have been developing to promote and educate that small changes in every day life can be easy to do and can make a difference. The need for liberation and freedom imprinted in men’s DNA (this we have been taught via car commercials) was finally accomplished by breaking out of the line and driving the open road in Audi’s “green” car. Awesome. So this wasn’t about being green, this was just about a need for speed, and escape from the entrapment of family (perhaps I’m being harsh, perhaps this is really a pro-marriage ad….maybe the real underlying message is If you only had a woman to deal with all of those domestic chores you wouldn’t get stuck in silly entrapments, hence you would ultimately have more opportunity to roam the open road…) Bah. Enough over analyzing. It’s kind of sad that I feel the need to dig deep into this ad to find some underlying messaging. But I offer this act of mindsturbation as a favor to Audi; otherwise all that would be left to say is, 'hey look, there goes Audi greenwashing' (c’mon guys, driving a car is just plain wasteful and harmful to the environment). So do us a favor, stick to selling your cars via the messaging about freedom and liberation that comes with having a car. Leave the environmental messaging to people who..well…care. Believe me, we’ll respect you for it in the morning. added by: leahl

Caricature my FML

“Caricature noun: /?kær.?.k?.t???r /US pronunciation symbol/?ker.?.k?.t??r/ n [C or U] (the art of making) a drawing or written or spoken description of someone, which makes part of their appearance or character more noticeable than it really is, and which usually makes them look silly”. And boy, that poor girl must have looked silly with all those pimples, but at least, for someone doing math studies, it probably helps to look like a calculator. To talk about those serious issues, acne AND caricature, we receive today an artist specialized in pure gorgeous art, and when she deals with acne, the result is pretty funny. Ladies, gentleman, teenagers, please welcome Lois van Baarle ! Lois is 24 and she’s our first artist from The Netherlands, Utrecht to be more precise. She is a freelance illustrator and animator, (anybody HIRE HER!). She enjoys having a lot of freedom and time to do her own thing as many many of us. But she gets paid for it most of the time. Being a freelance illustrator means you don’t have to go to an office every day and work for a boss you hate and eat at the cafeteria your whole life, which she likes being able to avoid. She is also lucky enough to have job opportunities coming her way most of the time and it’s understandable when you take a look at her amazing talent.  She has drawn her whole life and after high school decided to study animation in Holland. She did this for four years and now she’s basically drawing all the time. We guess it’s the story of any motivated commercial artist and we recommend you: guys, wanna be the greatest artist of all time? Draw as much as you can, with any kind of paper/pen you have, one day, you’ll realize that you went from 0 to 10. You’ll thank us later.   At the moment Lois is doing some small-scale work for games and illustrations, as well as making her own animated short trilogy, Trichrome, of which she has already finished the first one, and you can check it out here . Her personal website has been around since 2002, when her little sister taught her the joys of basic html. Ever since then she has been expanding her web presence in all kind of way: she has a sketchblog , personal blog , a whole bunch of networking site accounts (myspace and such), as well as deviantart to which she is totally addicted. She also created her personal website to make cool layouts, something she is quite hooked on doing. Lois likes drawing, but also being absurdly lazy. There is nothing better than sleeping in to a heinously late hour on a Saturday, having a huge breakfast/lunch kind of thing in bed, and walking around in pyjamas for the rest of the day. Besides this extremely guilty pleasure, she also likes to travel in Europe and Africa, watch movies and ride her bicycle (Holland power) like a true dutchie.   “-Last question, but not the least, Lois , why did you choose this FML? -For two reasons: I had acne as a young teenager, so I could feel this person’s pain; also, it had to do with art, caricature drawing, which seemed to fit with what I do. I was approached to illustrate something and loved the idea of FML. There’s nothing like a bit of bitter humor to brighten your day.”   Actually there’s also chocolate. Let’s read FML stories about chocolate. Thank you for your participation Lois !   Lois ‘ website is waiting for you: http://loish.net/ If you want to be the next published artist, send an email to alice@fmylife.com including a link to your website/blog. If you don’t have one, attach some of your drawings. But DON’T send your illustration right away! You need first to get in touch with Alice, who told her English teacher to take a look at this article (HELLO MARGARET) who will tell you what you have to do!
